    I just found you! I love how you explain the process and show your mistakes, like a real quilter! I’m making one of these quilts now. I had so much trouble joining the pieces by machine. I decided to hand sew them together like English paper piecing while watching TV. It goes very quickly,I’m basically just tacking them together, then I go to my machine and do a fancy stitch right away over the hand stitching. Works great, and no more picking out messy stitches. ,

    Prairie point pinwheel! Love the use of negative space. For those short on time, make a big block and set on point with colorful corners. You could also do a prairie point flange around the big block between the big block and the corners. Use a hump jumper on the nesting seams to keep stitches even. Just a darling pattern. Thank you.

    I have no one in my off line life who quilts. I did not begin quilting until 2019. My family and professional life did not allow much time for any real hobbies. Luckily you can learn about anything on UA-cam. There is a local group, and I do plan to meet up with them. Time has not permitted so far. My entre into sewing was to make maternity jumpers as there was very little available to professional women at the time. A linen or wool gabardine jumper had a perfect marrying with our bow blouses! We did not wear pants. Oh so long ago!

    I have several of these types of triangle rulers. I use my CG Folded Corner Clipper for most things. (I use Magic 8 method for non scrappy stuff). They are underused and demonstrated in my view. Thank you for doing this. I have great productivity/time saver for you and your viewers: Cut rectangles, and then simply align your ruler 1x and cut 1x. Your rectangle is: H= height of strip. W= H + .75. If you have a 2.5" strip, cut rectangles that are 2.5" H and 3.25" W. If you are cutting from a width of fabric, cut at the width (3.25" for this example) and use a Stripology ruler to easily subcut into 2.5 rectangles. Double up your fabric for even greater yield from each cut. (You do need sharp blade). Why .75"? The .75 comes from the following: 3/8" is the width of the flat top of the 1/4" mark (the 1/4" is on an angle, so the top of it = 3/8"). You need 2 x 3/8= 6/8", or .75" so that you get the seam allowance for both pieces. This method works for cutting sides for Triangle in Squares, Split Rectangles, etc. It saves lots of ruler turning. Give it a try. (Always make a test first)

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting День тому

      Thanks so much Leisa! This is a great tip. And thanks for explaining the math. It's good to understand the details, especially if you are keen to explore design (and to make the most of every piece of fabric!).

    P. S. I have been grabbing fabric images and loading them into my EQ8--That really helps me audition fabrics through the entirety of the design and make design/fabric changes until I have a IKIWISI (I know it when I see it) moment. That step has helped me save tears and curse words (at least on that front).

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting День тому

      Hi Leisa - I've been thinking about EQ8 but have never used it. The price tag is my barrier at this point. I use Prequilt as my design tool, but it doesn't help design paper-piecing designs, so I'm on the fence at this stage. I'm glad to hear that you are using EQ8. Would you recommend?

  • @notesfromleisa-land
    @notesfromleisa-land 2 дні тому

    Thanks for sharing this. You've made three different quilts, and each is beautiful. The rendition that you did not present is the typical that many see: light on dark and dark on light, and alternating the blocks. The all light corners (highlights the interior blocks with float in the circle) AND the all dark corners (which creates a bold frame) are both very striking. The light on light and dark on dark obviates the illusion as you note. Thanks for presenting this (and directing me here). A 3x3 presentation (using larger blocks) presentation makes a lovely baby quilt for those looking for smaller projects. One could simply use 2 colors/fabrics that have sufficient contrast. Diamond Rectangles work well as borders for these quilts too. I keep a notebook on maker's notes for particular blocks and patterns that I do. For this block: (1) scant 1/4"; (2) full quarter on sewing the corners to maintain points); (3) spin seams; (4) press corners to the dark fabric (for nesting). I've been cutting my scraps into 3.5" wedges and 2.5" CST's (using my CG folded corner clipper) to make my 6"F blocks.

    The Easy Angle ruler and Omnigrid 96 are very similar and I love them! I find I can get much more accurately pieced HSTs by cutting the triangles before I sew. I also cut off the point of the triangles before I sew them together so that I don't have to deal with those pesky dog ears after sewing. Another reason I like to cut the triangles from strips is that you can get more triangles from the width of fabric, with less waste, This is definitely a quilt I'll be working on! Thanks for great inspiration.

    This ruler is similar to the Creative Grids Folded Corner Clipper ( I think that's the name) created by Susan North I think. I have it permanently in my racks of go-to rulers. It means I can cut hsts from a jelly roll strip when I'm making something that cuts up a strip into different lengths. Also perfect to trim corners so snowballs end up being simply another 1/4" seam to stitch.

    Love this ruler and Bonnie has tutorial on her UA-cam on using this ruler. Have made one big bH scrappy and now doing another big BH scrappy. Thank you Michelle for your quilt patterns and your tutorials.🥰

    Thanks Michelle, that’s a good one. I have tubs of HST all with different backgrounds but I think it would still work. My little quilting group do Scrappy September where I take in my huge tub of scraps and it’s open season! We had so much fun last year, really looking forward to this year and your scrappy ribbon quilt might be just the ticket.

      Hi Patricia - your quilting group sounds like so much fun and I love the idea of Scrappy September! I hope some of my patterns help work through those tubs!

    Really fantastic Michelle!!!!! I love it!! the HST's seem a tad daunting, but hey... that's what we do. I find the repetitive to be a bit therapeutic sometimes. As soon as you'd sewn together the 4 blocks, could see the ribbons... How sweet is that?? Thanks, as always for your tutorials, and for the patterns you provide!! xoxox e. NB 🇨🇦

      Thanks Cynthia! I love scrappy and while it took a while to make all the HSTs, the result was worth it. Thanks for watching.

    Very nice. Time consuming it appears though.

      Hi Vera - it is a bit time consuming, because it is A LOT of triangles. But sometimes it's about the process and just working in slow time on a project you like. It would likely be tough to make this in a weekend! Thanks for watching.

      @@bitspiecesquiltingwine and trash tv move the process along. I’ve been processing my scraps to make 6” Kaleido blocks and 3” paper pieced economy blocks. Every quilter needs a good triangle ruler. I have several. My go to for this processing has been my CG folded Corner Clipper. I rally love your quilt. I’m not really a scrappy quilter. But these two blocks allow me to use fabric bits effectively.

      Thanks Gayla! The ruler really speeds things up so it doesn't actually take that long to make a ton of triangles.
