    I loved that you did this with basic tools: no fancy rulers or pens. This is very helpful for those of us who don't have much to work with or space to store it. Lovely pattern.

    Using the bonus triangles to make pinwheels is such a good idea. I’ve just made a TON of tiny HSTs from bonus triangles (and I have no idea what I will do with them). I wish I had seen your video first! Oh well, I know for next time

    Ok, I believe I have “enough” blocks sewn in all Christmas fabrics. I need to rent space just to lay it out! I have too many dogs and two puppies. If I get down on the floor, forget about sewing, it’s play time in my house. Thanks for the inspiration. I also used the off cuts and made 1.5 (triangle) into pinwheels that I used for trim on a Christmas panel.

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  9 днів тому

      So exciting Sally! It's scrappy, so don't worry about a layout - just sew them together and it will look great. I can only imagine what dogs and puppies would do to a bunch of quilt blocks on the floor!!!! What a riot! If you are comfortable, I'd love to see a photo of the finished quilt top - bitsandpiecesquilting@gmail.com.

      Hi Sally - scraps seem to multiply in the night.... start saving them and you'll be amazing how quickly they accumulate. Thanks for watching.

    • @mike1968442
      @mike1968442 Місяць тому +1

      I try to make 2 quilts a month. I don’t let mine accumulate. I set three bins, one for salvages, one for cut offs, and finally “leftovers” after the quilt is done. The cutoff/wastes are used to fill up donated dog beds. You would think i would have so much based on what I sew. None of my threads go in the trash. Every “bit and piece” gets used up about every two months.

Thanks for showing us how to make those hour glasses, I usually sew the long side and make into pin wheels, but I like the look of the hour glass better.

    Your mind is a beautiful thing! I'm learning what makes a scrappy quilt workable. My problem is, I keep my smaller pieces in a zipper pouch next to some larger pieces in the same color family. To store bits of extra tiny pieces, I've resorted to a plastic grocery bag. Others might through them away, but I still see their value.

      Hi Nancy! Thanks for your kind words, and I'm glad to hear you are working with your scraps. • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  4 місяці тому +2

      Hi Corgikat! I've discovered that pattern writing can be hard - you have to make some assumptions and that includes the width of fabric. Sometimes there is as little as 40 usable inches and sometimes as much as 44. But I hate to "waste" fabric - or add to my scrap bin unnecessarily. A bit of forward thinking and quilting math can really help. Thanks for watching!

      Me too! There is always a moment during construction when I think....yikes that's a lot of different fabric.... but then it all magically comes together and looks great. Thanks for watching.

    I like to sew the bonus triangles on the hypotenuse before I cut it off the bigger/main block piece. It means they don't stretch so much.

      Hi Jenna - it's true that the hourglass blocks have bias edges and you have to be a bit careful with them, but I find the HSTs to be too small for me to use. I'd love to see what you make with them!

    I ALWAYS save the offcuts from snowballing corners however I made them into HSTs, I’m DEF going to make them into hourglass blocks, super fun! And I LOVE the scrappy border. This one is going on my very long to do list, probably closer to the top tho!😍

      Glad you enjoyed the video and pattern. I find the off-cut HSTs too small for me, so prefer the hourglass blocks. I have some free patterns on my website to use them, too! Thanks for watching.

    Lovely quilt. Thank you for demonstrating. One hack to consider is to use the peak unit to complete the pattern on the on point square units on rows 2, 4, 6. Another hack is to use a a strip and cut the corners with a HST ruler (avoiding the waste).

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  4 місяці тому

      Hi Leisa - great points! I don't think I have an HST ruler (but I'll check) and I will take a look at improving the pattern by completing some of the trellising, as you suggest. Thanks for the great feedback.

      @@bitspiecesquilting Check out Creative Grids Folded Corner Clipper (small)--I use it for everything--and you won't find a better binding tool. Antler Designs also makes a Simple Folded Corners Ruler. The latter is more versatile, the former has more alacrity. I have them both, and I would not part with either.

    Cool pattern! I’m curious to know about the painters tape. I’ve used it before but I’ve always used the edge of the tape as my line. Is there an advantage to drawing the line in the middle instead? I might be missing something!

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  4 місяці тому

      Hi Valerie - I never thought of just using the edge of the tape.... I've always put a line roughly in the middle for no obvious reason! 🤔Thanks for watching.
