Michelle I love that you quilt in the real not quite perfect world and explain so well what to worry about and what not too.
It makes it more attainable and less will get tossed away x

Thanks Claire - that's really kind. Quilting is such a fun hobby, but I'm always surprised by the number of "rules" that are not rules and the things "they" say you are "supposed" to do. I hope to be able to give people some confidence that they can do this and that finished is better than perfect! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for explaining this clearly and noting that even with the ruler there is room for error. Thanks for the project sheet too, this is the next quilt block I am going to try scrappy.

Thanks for watching Terri! They are really beautiful pineapple blocks, despite the challenges with the ruler. And I love them for scrap busting!

Beautiful quilt Michelle. Now I have ruler envy!

Hi Patricia! There are other ways to make pineapple blocks, and to be honest, I'm not sure I would recommend this ruler. Maybe if you can get it on sale. It is not as accurate as I would expect something like this to be, so it can be a bit frustrating when things don't line up perfectly from the very first round. But I do love the look of the scrappy pineapples. Maybe see if a friend has one you can borrow? Thanks for watching and hope all is well with you.

I’ve made several quilts with this trim tool and I have ALWAYS had great success using the 1 1/2” strips. Yes, you have to have an accurate seam allowance.

Hi Becky! There are a bunch of ways to make pineapple blocks and while I enjoy using this ruler, it is not the most precise way. You might want to see if you can borrow one and give it a try before you commit to buying it. It is not as accurate as I would have expected a ruler like this to be. Thanks for watching.

I used this trim tool last month and made quite a few blocks with it. I think the scant 1/4" is probably important. I sew with a 1/4' (nothing scant) and really had trouble lining up the ruler lines for trimming. I couldn't get 1-1/2" strips to work at all, but trimmed away the excess of my 2" and 2=1/2" strips. The lines on the ruler just did not match my blocks much at all and I got a missing chunk on one side of the ruler very quickly. A little disppointed in the quality of the ruler with that.. After all of those problems. I did make a pillow and a table runner and 4 different bags from all the blocks I finished (pictures on Instagram). I liked them even better with black background rather than white, but I wanted to use up my whites anyway. Thanks for sharing your tips.

Hi Cynthia. Just looked at the images on Instagram and they turned out really well! The dark backgrounds are really dramatic and your colour selections look great. I agree that the ruler is not as accurate (as well designed??) as I think something like this should be, making it difficult to use. When things don't line up in the first round, you know there are going to be problems going forward. But the pineapples are so fun and I think paper piecing them would take a really long time (not sure I have the patience for that much paper piecing).

Enjoy your videos. I played with this tool , just to get my brain a round it. If you can get a hold of this magazine Quiltmaker March / April 2018. On the cover there's a quilt that uses 3.5 x 6.5 pieces and 3.5 squares to stitch and flip. It calls for 9 yards of background fabric. There has to be something to do with the trim pieces. Maybe you can come up with an idea. You might also want to cover stitch length during one of your videos. Hope you are having fun doing what you're doing.

Hi Ann - just between us friends, 9 yards of background seems insane for a quilt!! And while I love a good stitch-and-flip moment, it seems irresponsible to ask for that much fabric and not have a plan for the left overs! Looking at that magazine cover, you can easily get those same pieces by sewing two HSTs together (if you want 3.5 inch finished, start with 4 inch squares). There would be no waste at all that way. With a 3.5 inch square as your stitch and flip piece, you can easily get a bunch of 2.5 HSTs and there are literally hundreds of ways to use those! Just about any pattern that uses HSTs can be adapted to the size you have (whether it is 2 inches, or 2.5). Thanks for sharing and for your ongoing support!

YAY - I have been avoiding that pattern/tool because a lot of the strips that I wanted two use were also 1.5. (I used those strips else where, & so my pineapple trim tool is an unused tool)

Hi Aviva! I hope you give this a try. It is not as accurate as I'd like a tool like this to be, but dive it - the results are worth it!!

Hi Michelle! Great video! I love the Pineapple Trim Tool, and I've made a couple of quilts with it. But what I love more is the SKINNY Pineapple Trim Tool! Knowing what I know now, I wish I had bought the skinny one first, as I really love the results, and of course it calls for 1-1/2" strips. Because the strips are narrower, and because of the way the ruler is set up, you get more colors in your blocks. I've made three quilts from this one, and it's one of my very favorite rulers. The results are perfect every time, actually with either of the rulers. That's what I love about the Creative Grids specialty rulers - great results!

Hi Beth! I've never heard of the Skinny Pineapple....!!!! I'll have to check it out. That sounds like something I'd like. Any tips for using the rulers - I found this one to be difficult in some ways to use. It wasn't as precise as I thought it should be. I was already off within the first round and couldn't get it to line up, no matter what I did. So I just pushed forward and made it work (and have made a few projects because I love the look). I'd love to see a photo of your 1.5 inch pineapples, if you have one: bitsandpiecesquilting@gmail.com. Hope you are well!

@@bitspiecesquilting Hi MIchelle! The tips I have regarding both rulers (at least what worked well for me) was making sure my seams were consistent - I used a scant 1/4" and just making sure I lined the lines on the ruler up really carefully. I found that make a test "center" - the center square and the first round - and making sure the four lines were an exact match for the ruler's guide. Once I got that center just right, the rest of the block turned out great. I'll email you a picture of my favorite skinny pineapple quilt.

@@bethkoch11 Thanks Beth! The photos were wonderful! Thanks for sharing. And your point about getting that first round perfect is really insightful - something I'll pay closer attention to next time I use this ruler. Thanks.

Michelle great to see a quilting video from you. Bias edges scare me don’t have that ruler but I might think about getting it. Hope your big move is going well.

Hi Jean! Thanks for your note. We're back in Canada and getting settled in. The shipment is expected in another month (but I still have few videos I filmed in advance). I'm looking forward to working on my projects again. To be honest, I'm not sure I would recommend the ruler. Maybe see if you can borrow one to try it first? It is not as precise as I would like a tool like this to be, especially given the cost. And there are other ways to make pineapple blocks. Thanks for watching and hope you are well.

Thanks Michelle for a lovely video! I don’t have this ruler, I’m not a big ruler person. The pineapple block, SEW far, is still a possible “possibility” in the future. Thanks for the demonstration and for the tips.
Interesting…. Who saves 1 3/4” strips? In that case the blocks wouldn’t be coming from actual scraps in the stash. Hmmm
Thanks again, xoxo e. NB 🇨🇦

Hi Vee! I'm not sure I would recommend the ruler, to be honest. I'll keep using it because I have it, but there are other ways to make a pineapple block. It is such a fun and traditional block, but so many ways to make it look really interesting. And I agree - who saves such an odd size! 😜 Thanks for you ongoing support! Hope you are well.
