70s Cabin in the City - Home Remodel Intro and Tour!
We bought a fixer upper! And we're living in it while we do the remodel ourselves and working full time.
It was built in the 1970s, sits on 1 acre, located on a private lane, 3500 square feet, and it needs a lot of work.
Check out the before footage in this video and wish us luck as we try to demolish as much as possible in the 1 month we have before moving in.

DIY Garage Concrete Epoxy Floor
Переглядів 69111 місяців тому
Here we are at final stages of the structural build for our DIY Versatube garage. Concrete slab is getting poured, we prep, and epoxy the concrete floor leaving a nice functional finish on the floors. Due to the cement shortage we could not order our own truck, sadly having to pay a contractor to do the pour. The steps for the epoxy were: 1-acid wash and brush 2-neutralize with baking soda and ...

We started noticing some issues with the fuel gauge in our Lexus GX 470. It's a 23 gallon tank with a ~345 mile range. We would drive 50 miles and the fuel gauge would go from 3/4 of the way full to the 1/2 way mark. When we'd go to put in a full tank of gas, we'd only be able to put in ~13-14 gallons in a 23 gallon tank. The variable response in the fuel gauge and inability to fill up the tank...

      Our issue was the gauge would show full, then randomly drop a quarter or more after driving and decline way too fast from there. This fixed the gage, its accurate to the tank level now

    It's now May of 2024, and Just came across this video. A quick call to the Mercedes Benz dealer down in Oregon, and they told me parts are getting extremely difficult to find and unless you're an established customer they won't even touch a vehicle that's over 10 years old. If you're out in the middle of nowhere or in a small town, you are pretty much on your own. I doubt you're gonna find anybody to work on these. In my home state here in Alaska there's only two vendors that work on foreign vehicles and neither one of them will work on this vehicle. There is a vendor online by the name of million miles sprinter, and he appears to sell parts and of course there is Florida Van Man. It does seem like there is a bit of a cult following for these and as long as you're willing to work on them yourself I guess you could get by. I was looking at an airstream conversion one myself, and typically these are 40 grand or more. That's when I start checking into having them serviced. It's so unfortunate as they are a great size van, get good mileage and don't have all the emission crap of the newer sprinters. Again, just be aware that if you buy one you'll probably be fixing it yourself, unless you're close to a very large city. By comparison I have a 2006 Chevy Express van and I can pretty much stop in any gas station in America and have that thing serviced. Certainly something to consider if you plan on a van life style of living.

    Nice work! I'm curious how you diagnosed this particular leak. There are several other potential ones at lower levels. (Head gasket, hoses, oil filter adapter to name a few). Thanks!

    • @GetBusyBuilding
      @GetBusyBuilding 2 місяці тому

      Good question, I was able to diagnose using the logic you outlined. On the passenger side the leak was slowly dripping on the exhaust causing a slight smell around the engine bay and discoloration from the oil burning off… this eliminated everything lower. Additionally, you could see along the valve cover gasket where there was some oil gumming up over time. Purely visual cues led to the diagnoses

    I got as far as wheels installed last weekend. My question, was about the hydraulic reservoir cap not screwing down to the o-ring. Tech said it not supposed to. 🤷‍♂️ I just assumed o'rings are used to seat things.

    • @GetBusyBuilding
      @GetBusyBuilding 2 місяці тому

      I can’t quite remember on my but I thought there was a little retention from the o ring, not much. The tank isn’t under pressure so it doesn’t take much to seal. I’d definitely do a little macgyver something if you’re worried about anything getting in or it falling off. I have a love hate relationship with harbor freight

    I recently bought a property that has a versatube building and I want to add a few windows. Did you get the windows from them? Is it the same as the sheet metal where they just source them locally for you? Thanks

    • @GetBusyBuilding
      @GetBusyBuilding 2 місяці тому

      Windows are just from the big box store. Standard house windows, nice that this way you can go with pretty much any size. The frames/brackets you can get from versatube but it’s also easy to just locally source… just get some rectangular tube and angle brackets to fix horizontally to the verticals.

    Thank you for the detailed video. Does the kit include trim pieces to close up the gaps in the eaves and bottom of the walls? I'm mainly concerned about mice getting in the garage.

    • @GetBusyBuilding
      @GetBusyBuilding 3 місяці тому

      All trim pieces are provided with the kit. Versatube does not manufacture the r panel or trim but they source it from local sheet metal companies on your behalf when you purchase through them. You can also source it yourself. In terms of mice, you would have to put in some extra effort to keep them out. It would be completely doable but would require extra time and consideration.

    Great job and info, I have a question about snow load and the 3/12 pitch. How many inches of show stays on the roof? also doesit seem very sturdy if more snow heavy snow would be on it without brooming/raking it off? i ask because I am wanting this style in Northern Wisconsin but the snow load worries me

    • @GetBusyBuilding
      @GetBusyBuilding 5 місяців тому

      Great question, easy answer is that versatube will provide engineered drawings for an extra fee. Makes it simple. They have various truss styles and will adjust the height of the corner bracing to accommodate the load. If I remember correctly we had a 50-60 lb snow load range for our building, over the county requirement but I thought of putting solar up there. I can look up the exact specs. As far as snow retention, the roof will shed snow quickly. Especially if uninsulated like ours. I put a snow retention in place to keep the snow on the roof after our first winter. Snow was piled 4’ high on either side of the building from sloughing. Retention systems are simple and inexpensive and make it safer around the perimeter of the building. Hope that helps. Cheered 👍

      I replaced my fan clutch in 2-3 hrs. The manual may say to take apart the full front end but you can do so with removal of very few parts. I believe there’s some videos on the tube that demonstrate it. “Easy” is a relative… personally I didn’t find it difficult.

  • @benjieduke3693
    @benjieduke3693 10 місяців тому

    Also the front auxiliary fan is pulling air through the radiator. Someone has put a mannual switch on mine. Looks to me if you're going down the road, that fan doesn't need to be running because it is pulling through the radiators. It is off set away from the main fan. I see that as some dodge bull shit. But it needs to run when idling while sitting still. Especially in this 90° weather we are experiencing at this time. Just saying

    • @GetBusyBuilding
      @GetBusyBuilding 10 місяців тому

    • @GetBusyBuilding
      @GetBusyBuilding 10 місяців тому

      If it’s the overflow hose it would just dump out next to the expansion tank. That’s odd that it keeps overflowing. I don’t fully know what to look for in that case but I’d consider doing a complete coolant flush or replacing the cap. Let me know if you end up finding a solution.
