  • We started noticing some issues with the fuel gauge in our Lexus GX 470. It's a 23 gallon tank with a ~345 mile range.
We would drive 50 miles and the fuel gauge would go from 3/4 of the way full to the 1/2 way mark.
When we'd go to put in a full tank of gas, we'd only be able to put in ~13-14 gallons in a 23 gallon tank.
The variable response in the fuel gauge and inability to fill up the tank all the way led us to believe there was a fuel sending unit problem.
The fuel sending unit is located in the gas tank and in this video we show the process of how to access the fuel sending unit in the fuel pump assembly located in the gas tank. We use a multimeter to show why the fuel sending unit wasn't working properly and why the new fuel sending unit works correctly.

what do you think the life of that fuel pump is? i got 235K on my 2004. fuel gauge been out for years but my teenager drives that now so was top of my list to fix. but probably should fix it at some point. asking on fuel pump if i should just proactively swap it out and then get the sender fixed at the same time. for those broken clips, do you think they will break pretty likely? i would want to be prepared for it with the replacment parts in hand. do you know if the hose assy is a part that can be bought. dont have a Pick N Pull near me. and really need to find a friend with a lift!! getting too old and lazy and just watching all the under the car action with dropping the tank making me second guess if i want to do it LOL

I really don’t know life expectancy on a fuel pump for these, you can get an entire assembly and just swap it all at once but I believe if it’s a few hundred dollars to go that route. You might find a cheaper used one on eBay. It is a little bit of a pain to drop the tank but doable… and at least once it’s done it should last another 200k miles

So technically a new fuel pump would also fix this problem? If it comes with the float?

If you get the entire pump assembly then yes it would fix the issue. It would also cost a few hundred dollars more then just getting the sending unit…. So you know what my broke ass did

Did this let you fuel up to 23 gallons?

Our issue was the gauge would show full, then randomly drop a quarter or more after driving and decline way too fast from there. This fixed the gage, its accurate to the tank level now

It might be just as easy to add battery fuel cells and new motors! This is one for the mechanic. Ill pay the $400 and watch more youtube instead.

It’s definitely not for everyone, all part of the learning experience for me
