GX 470 Replacing a Leaking Valve Cover Gasket

- There was a small valve cover leak in my Lexus GX 470 that went unfixed for about 2 years.
In this video you’ll see the steps I took to replace the valve cover gasket and tube seals to fix that leak.
Vehicle is a 2004 Lexus GX 470 that aspires to be an over lander someday. Currently has about 190k miles and running beautifully.
Items were purchased from Napa Auto.

great video, thanks
Thanks for making this video! Definitely gave me some confidence in taking this job on myself.. my 08 has 173k miles and I've noticed the sides of the engine are a lil wet.. I'll be using this! Thx
Hope it all goes well, it can be a fun project that saves you money! Our GX is an 04 and about 196k miles, still drives like it’s new…. I think the engine will outlast the rest of the vehicle. Have to love Toyota/Lexus
Helpful Video, thank you!
Great video! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Video saved!!! Mine just started leaking.
Good luck, wish I had done mine when it first started instead of waiting for it to make a mess
Good job!!!
Thanks! We appreciate the feedback!
great job! Tnx very meticulous. how long did it take?
This can probably be less than a 4 hr job if you are comfortable with it and move straight through the process. It took me about 7 hours taking my time and filming.
Nice work! I'm curious how you diagnosed this particular leak. There are several other potential ones at lower levels. (Head gasket, hoses, oil filter adapter to name a few). Thanks!
Good question, I was able to diagnose using the logic you outlined. On the passenger side the leak was slowly dripping on the exhaust causing a slight smell around the engine bay and discoloration from the oil burning off… this eliminated everything lower. Additionally, you could see along the valve cover gasket where there was some oil gumming up over time. Purely visual cues led to the diagnoses
Don’t need to remove the plugs.
You’re right about that… I was simply replacing my spark plugs at the same time. Good comment, I should have been clearer in the video.
