  • First video building a 24’ x 30’ detached Versatube Metal garage in our backyard. The build is 100% DIY… no one else to blame for all the glorious mistakes and a few things done correctly. We tore down the existing structure with a harbor freight towable backhoe, we bought it to dig the footing but couldn’t resist having a little extra fun with it : )
The steel shop / garage is a DIY package built by VersaTube. They are not the cheapest option available but Versa tube is a fantastic company to deal with, top notch customer service, which makes for a huge plus for the average do it yourself - er when you run into any hiccups.
When we bought the house the backyard hadn’t been touched for many years, the 225 sq ft wood frame shop with cedar shingle roof had been there since the house was built in the 1950’s. The foundation was built with individual cinder blocks laid on their side like piers to support the corners and middle of 8 x 8 posts running horizontally. It was essentially a low level pier and skirt foundation. The cinder blocks had mostly broken and the levels were all off. Though we would have liked to save the building it seemed to be more effort than it was worth (and we wanted a bigger detached space).
Ultimately the metal versatube garage will serve as a way for us to triage with the house remodel that we are planning!

Oh it's crossed my mind on tearing a shed down with it, but ended up using my bigger backhoe for it..

If that things less than 90 days old email them and tell them you have a defective cylinder for the one that's drifting down and save your rebuild kits because they can't get them anymore. They sent me a free cylinder.

That is a great point, they did send us new pins and bucket free of charge. I was very impressed with the customer service. I didn’t know about the rebuild kit! Hope they figure out a supplier for those.

@@GetBusyBuilding I have had mine for 2 years and have since rebuilt 2 cylinders was the reason I was saying to save your kits. I did find replacement O-rings which was the only problem with my last cylinder.

I did rebuild one cylinder, surprisingly it was just the nut that loosened up so I only ended up cleaning it up and torquing the nut back down… worked like new. I’ve been impressed overall but part accessibility is definitely key on these little machines. I appreciate the insight from your experience and hopefully it will help some others who view this also
