First off, it looks great and I love the color scheme you went with! Secondly, thank you for adding in the tips at the end! I'm about to do this myself and I'll definitely keep them in mind going forward with my project!
+Andrew Does Life thank you! Definitely a few things we would have done a little different but it really makes for a good durable finish on your adventure vehicle. Best of luck with your project, I’m sure it will turn out great!
We plan to bedliner our van, I am ready to, she is getting ugly with all the primer spots she has accumulated due to grinding out rust. Thanks for making a video on this guys :) we are finally getting the hang of this UA-cam thing
Thank you! It was a learning experience and definitely didn't turn out exactly the way we wanted... but it was fun to try and next time will be even better : )
Great demo and much needed tips. I had some questions: 1. Why pick T-Rex over Durabak or Raptor - price? 2. Did you use Paint Thinner to dilute and wash brushes or Xylene? 3. When I use Varethane Polyurethane on wood, it says never to shake it but stir it. Shaking creates air bubbles that burst on the wood surface and make visible craters. No issues for you? Please no music. It drove me nuts. No demo should ever have music. You need to focus and hear what is being said. Thank you for a great video!
Haha, thank you. Would probably call it more of a “What not to do” as opposed to demo. Picked t-Rex for the price. We did thin the liner. When you are using polyurethane and applying with a brush bubbles are definitely a problem however this is very thick and sprayed with an undercoating gun so there isn’t much concern with bubbles.
I really would have, less skill for a bonehead like me. Would have been easier to get a consistent thickness and texture... may have taken a little more material
Yes, you can roller this on - effect is almost same as spray with much more control. The spray gun needs to be cleaned between bottles or will clog and produce lumps. However, you have to work fast as it dries very fast. So you are under more pressure with the spray gun cleaning. You also have to clean with Xylene not Paint Thinner, and this is very toxic stuff. Use Mohair rollers only for a fine finish. Keep them soaking in Xylene till project is complete. Much less masking if you roller paint it on.
Thanks for sharing your tips and shortcomings! Can I ask what brackets you have for your roof. It looks like they mount the same way I need to mount on my van (mega roof) THANKS!
No problem! Just a vantech roof rack for hi-top splinters. You can definitely fab your own but this was a cheap enough quick solution for us. Cost us $240 if I remember right.
We have a Vantech ladder rack on the roof connected with structural aluminum which I believe we show in another video (on the solar panel installation). If we don’t have it up yet we’ll definitely get it up soon!
It is up to you there! I know Anaheim is crowded but it doesn’t overspray quite like normal paint because it is heavier. I would feel comfortable giving it a shot to see how it worked out! Best of luck 👍
hey, how much truck bed liner would I need just for the bottom portion that you made a darker color? I'm thinking about buying roll-on for just that section on my sprinter alone with the front and back bumper :)
Sorry for the delay, you may have already knocked this out and if so let me know how much you used. A gallon should be enough to do a decently thick coat.... it will depend a little on how thick you go though
This is what we have been looking for! Thank you, we have a Vintage Camper Van we are rebuilding and totally need to protect her and she needs a new paint job! What spray gun did you use!!
I believe it took me 3 SMR-1000T T-Rex truck bed liner kits from speedokote. I should have bought a 4th kit to really do a nice coat, it ended up being a little thinner than I would have liked in a few areas but I was being a little cheap 😋
I used just under 4 gallons for the sprinter high top. To get a better/thicker coat I would have gone with 5 gallons (maybe even 6 with some left over).
It is a vantech roof rack for higher top roofs, it worked out fairly well for the application. As for the spray liner, if I remember correct I used 4 gallons and could have used just a little bit more. It goes on somewhat thick.
Looks pretty good!
White paint in sun, cool.. Dark paint, hot......

Nice color

Best of luck with the van! It’s always nice to cover up all the primer spots : ). Makes such a big difference to the overall look!!!
EXCELLENT tips and info on this! I've been thinking about doing this to mine. Nice work!

Great video and build. Would you really have rolled on the paint if you did it again?

Can you please tell me where you got the roof rack brackets? Thanks in advance

Where would you buy the kit now to get the free tint. I am based in Los Angeles so local recommendations are good
good job.. is it okay to do this in front of my driveway my worry is the neighbors.. I live here in Anaheim, California

What spray gun did you use!!
The spray gun is outlined in the video, it is a Shultz undercoating spray gun that comes with the product.
BearsBuilds ok so we only need the air pressure machine.. How has it been holding up?? ;-)
Just need an air compressor and an air hose to hook into the spray gun... then you are off to the races!
Great Video! I plan to do this exact same thing to my conversion. How much liner did it take for you to coat the whole van?
I believe it took me 3 SMR-1000T T-Rex truck bed liner kits from speedokote. I should have bought a 4th kit to really do a nice coat, it ended up being a little thinner than I would have liked in a few areas but I was being a little cheap 😋
It didn't effect the slide on your side door at all?
Nope!
do you know how many Liters of liner did you need ?
I used just under 4 gallons for the sprinter high top. To get a better/thicker coat I would have gone with 5 gallons (maybe even 6 with some left over).
thanks for the info! @@GetBusyBuilding
I have the same van How much did you end up using? And where did you get the gutter mount racks?

dood its all blotchy
Terrible outcome, but nice try
Thanks for taking the time to let me know
