MoonJuice Hikes
Приєднався 22 вер 2012
I'm Breven, trail name "MoonJuice". I went on my very first hike here in Arizona just a few years ago and quickly fell in love with the Arizona desert. Day hikes have turned into backpacking trips with my wife of almost 30 years, and backpacking trips have turned into long distance hiking - completing both the Arizona and Colorado Trails.
My channel features hikes that I enjoy, which consist of real adventures; long, difficult, and away from civilization! You wont find the 2 or 3 mile hikes here that require permits, or guides, or end at a crowded swimming hole. You won't find any of the tourist hikes that tend to get lots of views... I like to go where crowds cannot form! The purpose of these videos is to try and show what its like to backpack long distances (especially if you don't have much experience, like me), and how I find campsites, water etc. Maybe one of these adventures will inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and try something new?
Thanks for checking it out!

Long Distance Challenge - Day Hiking the Arizona Trail
Passages 16 & 17 of the Arizona Trail happens to be one of my favorite sections of the AZT and its also the most accessible stretch from my home in Gilbert. At 38 miles, this was the very first multi-night backpacking trip I ever took. Its also where the MoonJuice trail name was born.
5 years later and 40lbs lighter, I head off southbound on the AZT to set my personal day hike long distance record. 38 miles in a single day, which is 11 miles farther than I have ever attempted to hike in a single day.
From Picketpost in Superior, to the Kelvin Trailhead near Kearny at the Gila River crossing, these are some of the best desert sections of the AZT.
Refusing to give myself the opportunity to bail, or to camp overnight, I packed the bare minimum. I forced myself to either reach my goal and get to the end, or hit the SOS button for a helicopter rescue. With no choice...digging deep is a requirement.
Enjoy!

Picketpost Mountain to Reavis Ranch - Superstition Wilderness
Переглядів 88021 день тому
If you're a new backpacker in Arizona, or you want to backpack in Arizona, Reavis Ranch is one of the best places to test your new trail legs. At 7 miles, with just under 1,000' of elevation gain, backpackers make their way from the Rogers Trough Trailhead on the Arizona Trail, to a pine tree forest - tucked in the rugged hills of the Superstition Wilderness. This oasis features a perennial cre...
Camelback Mountain - Echo Canyon Trail - The Praying Monk

Camelback Mountain is one of the most popular and crowded hiking destinations in Arizona. During good weather on a weekend, its so crowded that hikers often find themselves in a long line of hikers who eventually reach the summit only to find 100 other people already on top trying to get a selfie without 99 hikers in the background. We like to refer to it as the Disneyland Hike. Located near th...
Lower Salt River Adventure - Wild Horses, Kayaking & Climbing

Coon Bluff along the Salt River has been a popular destination for recreation for decades. The name goes back to 1919 when a group of Boy Scouts cooked up a racoon for their parents and told them it was pork - just for laughs. In addition to boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, birdwatching, and other activities, rappelling has also been popular from the eastern side of the bluff. Over the years...

Join me on this long awaited, 3 day backpacking trip in the seldom seen Eastern Superstition Wilderness. Most trails in the Eastern Supes have been basically abandoned since the Woodbury fire destroyed many of the wooded canyons in 2019. With such destruction, the wilderness has reclaimed many miles of the trails in the area, and current info on water sources, camping spots and trail conditions...
Exploring Barks Canyon & The Glory Road - Superstition Wilderness

If you have ever hiked the Bluff Springs Trail in the Western Superstitions, you've seen Barks Canyon. Barks is sandwiched between the Geronimo Cave Ridgeline and the Bluff Springs Mountain ridgeline, SE of Weaver's Needle. Like Peralta, Barks is a rugged canyon lined with clumps of tall hoodo-type rock formations visible to those who make it up and over Cardiac Hill - the local name given to t...

A chance encounter with a couple of climbers on the summit of Weaver's Needle last weekend, provided insight into a rappelling adventure that begins at Robber's Roost in the western Superstition Wilderness and ends with a 230' rappel down the rarely flowing Carney Springs Waterfall. Along with my my pal Troy Dixon @walkingwithawookie1097 (who we learn is more of a Pink Lady apple guy), we caref...
Exploring West Boulder Canyon - Off Trail in the Superstition Wilderness

Winter in Arizona is a beautiful time of year to explore the rugged Sonoran Desert. Mild temps and recent rain set the stage for a really interesting off-trail adventure. NOTE: Hiking off trail in any wilderness area is dangerous. While we expected a day hike, we brought enough supplies to stay safe, even if we had to spend a night in the canyon. Despite 2 GPS Rescue devices, when hiking into u...

Reverse Flatiron refers to an off trail route from Massacre Falls Trailhead, to hilltop 5024, just above the icon Flatiron landmark. This 9.3 mile loop, includes a steep bushwhack, and challenging scramble up 3,360' aeg to 5024'. With no GPS map to download, this "route" is certainly not for beginners. Essentially, its the Siphon Draw Trail, without the trail. Dangerous for experienced hikers, ...

Hey, This Is Joe, I met you yesterday at the Peralta trail head. Let me know when you will be doing this again. You mentioned maybe in December. How can I contact you?
Hey Joe! Cool, right? I haven’t pinned down a date, but I’m thinking mid- December. Shoot me an email. Breven@resolemate.com. Did you find LaBarge spring?
Dude calm down Juice. What level comes after Beastmode?😅 Sounds like your knee had the Alabama Shakes.
lol! Yeah man, I’m calming down for sure. It’s been 5 days and I’m still not walking right! Gotta get it together.
Love your stuff moonjuice i hope to catch a subscriber meetup one day :)
Thanks Blake! Stay tuned...I've got one in mind that I'm planning for December, will be making an announcement n a couple of weeks!
Weirdos hands up 🖖
Throw ‘em up! 🖖🏻
That was my first solo backpacking trip too, and only about a month later than you. Mine was (late) February 2020.
Do you think you breathe extra hard because of the camera?
Totally! The elevation gain has nothing to do with it, just trying to be more dramatic! 😂
The comedic portions of this video had me rolling :) Fricking hilarious
Amazing!🎉
Wow props on a massive day!! That’s an incredible accomplishment..👌🏻
Thanks man. That was a fun box to check, but wouldn't recommend it! Much more enjoyable as an overnighter.
@@MoonJuiceHikesI get that. I have been contemplating breaking my personal record. My ego wants it much more than my body does 😂.
The ultimate goal is the 50 mile Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim in one day. Keep practicing; you can do it👍🏻😃🌵
Oh lawd! I don’t think the R2R2R is possible for me, but never say never!
Only 21 more miles in a single day and I’ll have your record beat!
😂😂😂
Good mileage dude! You're crushing it these days. Your desire to push your limits is respectable. Well done. See you soon.
This was a test. I passed with a D-. We might have to leave off a part of our December loop if I have any hope of surviving.
Getting it done, man! That's impressive.
Digging deep!!
I started having phantom pains in my right knee while watching. That’s a wild long hike. Congrats!
I know a Dr. you can call for that Colby… 😂
Wow! That’s amazing. Good job! My personal record is 30 miles in a day. Couldn’t imagine 38.
Imagine that 30, with 8 more! 😁 I’m gonna stop at 30 moving forward… the wheels fell off the bus after 30 for me.
Is there an all trails to this hike?
Yes, Battleship Mountain is a popular trail.
@@MoonJuiceHikes let me clarify with. What is it? As in the all trails
@ Battleship Mountain Scramble
@@MoonJuiceHikesheaded out there tomorrow! Wondering your thoughts on how much water to bring. Seems like you can get lucky and find some but not worth banking on it. Let me know!
@ I missed this, was camping out under Weavers Needle. You’re already done, so no sense in offering useless advice! 😂
That’s a popular route for backpackers. I’m a Trail Angel with the ATA and I’ve done many shuttles from Picket Post to Roosevelt Lake. Reavis Ranch is a popular spot. I’ve been there from 3 different ways too; Rogers Trough, Reavis Gap, and Rt 88. Stay safe out there!
Nice! I got cliffed out several times on this one, broke a foothold off route and took a small fall thanks to a cactus holding my weight. As a climber its not technically difficult but mentally stressful when I kept getting off route!
Oh yeah man, it’s not easy find the route or stay on it. Might need to update this video with some tips on how to stay on track…
I love it!!!! <3
I love this video and your Page!!! 🙂 Your adventures are so fun to watch and inspiring to continue enjoying the great outdoors...even when it gets tough! Thank you for sharing and thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for helping me with carrying my kitchen sink LOL! Lots to learn too, but I absolutely loved it and it was such a pleasure meeting you, Troy, Steve, and Edie! 💜 Hope to meet up on another trail! Thank you x infinity! 🤗
A lot looks rattlesnakey. You can't possibly follow the rule of 'watch where you step' as so much is impossible to see around as you put your feet down. Any suggestions on getting over that fear?
Isn’t that the truth! It is a little nerve wracking when it’s overgrown. Fact is, I just don’t see many snakes and I’m hiking just about every day in the desert. I did 800 miles on the AZT and saw one. Not sure why I’m not afraid of them, I probably should be more worried about stepping in one tbh.
@@MoonJuiceHikesgood to know, thanks! I'd like to do the AZT when money allows.
Hey MoonJuice, I haven’t watched in awhile but I noticed you look a lot leaner and meaner than the last time I watched one of your videos!
Very true! Dropped about 28lbs on the CT last year, and managed to keep it off. Hiking every day, really paying off!
I noticed that too. 🥳
No apples…
Troy found two that were more like prunes than apples… but they still tasted good! TBH, with enough brown sugar and butter, I could probably eat dirt, so no telling how bad those apples actually tasted. lol!
So good to see you on the trail! The Gilbert 5…
Nice to see you too Robyn!
Thanks again for rescuing a damsel in distress and making our friend's hike more tolerable. It's the hottest I have ever been to Reavis
No problem at all Theresa, nice meeting you all.
Juice, why the booty shorts in the Superstitions?! 😁😆 Wore the shades so the legs didn't blind me. 😎 JK! Nice video
lol 😂😂😂 that’s as tan as these Scottish legs get! I mean, that’s the end result of hiking in shorts everyday, all summer. Shoot, I was getting pretty proud of how dark they’ve gotten. LOL.
Really enjoyed this video, nothing like a hiking adventure.
You know what sucks? That entire canyon just burned up in a 15,000 acre fire. So sad. Won’t look like this again in my lifetime.
MoonJuice! You were our trail angel who carried some of my friend's pack weight down from the saddle before the switchbacks this past weekend on that hike! We met Troy, Steve, and Edie Bark-ell with that cute lil' bell too. It was really a pleasure meeting all of you! I couldn't believe how much stuff you left at our Jeep waiting for her. I realized I did watch one of your videos already about the Haunted Canyon, and it's definitely on my radar. Maybe in Spring, we'll see! THANK YOU once again!! Reavis Ranch, I'll be back someday, but not when it's over 90 degrees out in October, hah!!
Hey you found me! 😁 Natalia had such a great attitude, despite the huge load she was hauling. We’ve all been there on our first backpacking trip, lugging that kitchen sink! I was happy to be able to help! Best part of the hiking community - looking out for each other. Nice meeting you all!
Man that’s a long hike 🤣. I haven’t made it to Reavis yet. I need a beefier car to get out there. Looked like a good time!
Definitely need some clearance for that road… unless you want to start from Picketpost? 😵💫
Man are you always in Beastmode? 😂 Another great video. This is the year to get to the ranch for me. Question: what's the purpose of Eddie's bell? I have an idea but curious about it.
Oh yeah Theo, it’s such a good spot. The creek was VERY low. Dry in places where it’s usually flowing strong. Still water, but very little. Get out there while the gettin’s good! As for the bell, Troy said it’s to help him find her, she’s prone to exploring around camp… and it helps to scare away any predators that might be partial to dog meat.
@@MoonJuiceHikes I figured as much on the bell. My trail dog is a schitzto as well and thought that was a great idea. 🤣 It's so dry right now we are re-figuring our Peralta to Canyon lake adventure. 💀☠️
On the switchbacks up the hill from Rogers Canyon is the Reavis Grave Site. It's right next to the trail; is it no longer marked? And this time of year there should still be apples on the century-old trees in the orchard at Reavis Ranch.
We were expecting apples but there were absolutely none. 🙁 saw some notes online from a few weeks ago that there were some stragglers, but they were all small and few and far in between. We missed ‘em completely.
Oh, and yes, the grave site is still there. I shot video of it last time I came through, just didn’t do it this time. 👍
@@MoonJuiceHikes I was out there this weekend as well and was bummed by the results. Last year was an amazing apple crop.
Awesome😄 Edie Barkell❤️
I know what I know, if you know what I mean
I saw your car parked at a trail today, did my hike thinking that I was going to meet you there. Nope. Keep doing videos and inspiring people to get out there and hike.
Ahhh! Sorry I missed you. I parked at Picketpost and hiked 26 miles to Reavis Ranch. I’m guessing I went the opposite direction? Video coming soon…

Hey Moon Juice, massive congratulations on such an impressive hiking achievement! That trek looks absolutely brutal, and you crushed it like the hiking machine you are! I love how you shared a bit about the stashing logistics and your 5-point "guide to not croaking"-it really highlights everything that goes into your journeys. You’re not just an incredible adventurer, but also a fantastic educator. I always learn so much watching your videos! It’s also great to see the friendships you form along the way and how you push through all the obstacles. Way to power through, MJ! Keep inspiring us with your resilience and knowledge!
I appreciate you, man. Thanks for watching and for the kind words! These adventures have a real impact on my everyday life - no doubt. Something strange happens when you test yourself to the absolute limit, both physically and mentally and still survive… makes normal life seem so simple.
I could have done with less 'Every Breath You take'. Other than that, thanks for taking me along for an awesome ride! Great video!
lol! Sorry dude… I was sucking wind

Breven, it’s Dave and Jack from Jake’s Saloon! Huge congratulations on completing Lowest to Highest! The video you put together is incredible, and I’m blown away by how fast you turned it around after your adventure. Hearing about it at the bar was one thing, but seeing it come to life on screen was something else entirely. I’m seriously impressed. Thanks again for taking the time to hang out with us in Lone Pine-we had an awesome adventure, too. Unfortunately, Jack wasn’t able to get onto base because he didn’t have the right credentials, but the trip was still fantastic overall. We’re so grateful you included us in the video; Jack definitely felt like a celebrity because of it! Hope you’re doing well, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your future adventures and hikes.
Hey Dave! I was hoping you guys found this! I've said it before, and its true....the thing I remember most from these solo adventures is the people you meet along the way. Jack said, "I've been sitting here, and no one seems interested in having a conversation...everyone is keeping to themselves". Little did Jack know, you couldn't get me to keep to myself if you tried!! 6 days alone...I needed some conversation too! Right place, right time. Glad to know you both... if you ever find yourself in Arizona, look me up. I owe you a Moonjuice or two.
@@MoonJuiceHikes Thanks, Breven! I might be in AZ for work in the next few months, if so I'll hit you up!!!
@@davenorman5588 Sweet! I hope you do...I owe you a MoonJuice or two
Your videos are amazing!! Thank you for giving us new ideas
It took me as long to watch the video as it did for you hike low to high! 😂 You are an inspiration. For you to do it alone makes you even more hardcore! Did you not have a headache staying the night on the summit?
That was a long one Curtis....I felt like the longer format works for such a long and grueling hike. I didn't have any issues with the altitude at all. I think going up to 10k in the Panamints, then up to about 9k in the Inyo's, then a night at the Portal, around 8,400' must have helped with the acclimation. I felt pretty great up there.
Amazing adventure . 🙌 So happy for you. On my bucket list to hike Mt Whitney. See you on the trails 🥾🏔️
Whitney was great! The permitting process was a challenge, but the hike was really cool. Also, little side note, camping is free in the Alabama hills...if you want to camp before the hike and save a few bucks. :)
Holy f*ck! You are amazing!!!
EPIC.
Really enjoyed the coverage on your L2H hike and Whitney summit. Both, the scenery and the personal experiences. Thanks for sharing it with us. And, you got me. 🙂 I watched almost all of your chowing down and busted out a good laugh when you called us on it. 🙂
Nothing wrong with being a little weird… 😂
Love the views! What a beautiful and diverse hike.
My guy,so badass! Great video 💯%
Do you find ticks on your body? Clothing?
Ticks? No. I’ve never seen a tick before. Ticks aren’t common in the southwest. Zero ticks in the desert, and of course zero in the alpine.
Hey Brevan, had the opportunity to meet you on an early morning Salt River paddle with Troy and Lance. Can't thank you enough for sharing your experience! So happy for you! Congratulations isn't enough!!!!! Continue to live well. ps. I cried when you hit that summit. I've had many similar emotional moments. Your well documented quest sure made me feel I was there. Hope to see you again! Cheers
Oh yeah, I remember you! Yeah man, it’s hard to describe the feeling of being on a summit you were certain you were never gonna see…. What an incredible feeling. Glad you enjoyed it! Until next time.
I think that’s the first time I have heard Whitney Houston in one of your videos, but great choice! I especially enjoyed watching you eat your lasagna! Most importantly, great job at sticking with it and getting done what most people would never attempt!
Ha ha! Thanks James. Sliding Whitney in there at the end seemed appropriate on many levels. 👍
Awesome brother. It seems that the hardest part of your journey was the Low part. So jealous as I once was going to attempt Whitney. I guess now I have to....LOL....What's next?
Dude, put it on your to-do list! Being up above the tree line in the alpine is such a cool feeling. When there’s no more vegetation… it feels unlike anything else. I’m going to try to get. JMT permit next year, gotta stay on some maintained trails… that cross country stuff is just brutal.
Hey! My husband and I shared a picnic table with you at the Mt Whitney Portal on Saturday September 28th. We really enjoyed meeting you and hearing about your journey!
Hey! Ahhh, I wondered if you guys would find this. That was my second time eating that big Whitney Portal Store burger. Yummy! Thanks for the conversation, I enjoyed chatting with you guys!
