Just Plane Fun! This is a UA-cam channel dedicated to the proposition that hand plane parts should be affordable and available for the average user. While our prices are not always significantly cheaper than eBay, most parts typically sell for anywhere between 50-80% of the average eBay sold price.
Whether you need a $2 frog screw for your No4 Stanley or a $110 frog for your round side Bedrock 608, we work hard to find the parts you need. We just ask for your patience as this is not a full time gig... yet.
Tune in for discussions on mostly Stanley planes and parts, with a few other brands sprinkled in from time to time such as Miller’s Falls, Sargent, Craftsman and Chaplin (among others). If you have a question or a request for plane parts, the best way to reach us is thru Facebook messenger. Have you joined the Facebook group yet? If not, it’s Just Plane Fun - the parts division!

99 Problems but a Tote Screw ain’t one - Stanley Bench Plane Hardware - General Discussion
Good luck picking one up for under $800 that has all of its parts, mis in its original box and doesn’t need a complete restoration. How do I know? I have been collecting and using Stanley planes both privately and in my business for over 35 years. The last one in pristine condition that I found at an auction I stopped bidding on at $1500 and left the room at $1800. They can be had but be prepared to pay through the nose plus there is a steep learning curve in learning to use this baby. I did finally get one by buying 7 different planes and piecing together one complete plane with the addition of 6 extra parts from a friend that makes his living from buying and selling planes and plane parts. It is a joy to use after you get the hang of it.
Thanks! I just picked one up. Good recommendation. You are right. What a wonderful investment
Got mine 2 years ago.
So funny. So true.
How do get ahold of you
My email for hand plane related inquiries is: jplanefun@gmail.com
I have a few planes that are similar to yours. I sharpen them and use them at various times. I love my woodworking tools very much. I sure enjoyed looking at yours and found them very interesting. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Be sure to let me know if you ever need any parts
#45...I inherited one complete with box and paperwork. Love it. Use it often.

Good afternoon; First of all, I want to congratulate you on the spectacular content! I'm learning a lot from these classes and if I had accessed this content earlier, I wouldn't have suffered so much, making bad choices. Now I'm looking for a Stanley Bailey 5 Type 11/19 planer, for my own use and to start my collection. Do you have one available for sale or could you tell me where I could buy one? I'm in Fortaleza (Brazil).
Feel free to find me on Facebook if you’re on the platform (Michael Jenks). Or email me at jplanefun@gmail.com I ship all over the world 🌎. As long as you don’t mind covering the postage cost, I can ship you most anything

@justplanefun thanks it worked
Great info! I don’t know what rock I have been living under but just discovered your channel. I’m going to be catching up on all your videos in the near future. Keep sharing.
I like everything about that! Let me know if you have any questions or if you find that you need any planes or parts.
Hey mate just watched this vid and very helpful thank you . did you manage to do a more detailed video of the type 9/9alfa I have a type 9 with number 2 under the tote and 2.1?4 under the leaver cap. cheers bud.
The number 2 under the tote is most likely casting number. The way I understand it, Stanley cast the soles in groups of 4 - they were numbered 0-3 in some batches or 1-4 for others. From what I hear, this was their method to determine which casting was which in case of anomalies. The 2 1/4 on the back of the lever cap sounds like it’s from a No5 1/2. I have a short out that covers some of the variations on Stanley No5 1/2 lever caps. Up until type 12, they typically had “2 1/4” etched / stamped on the back
Thanks for all the prep you do to make these indispensable type videos. I continually check back for reference, and learn something additional each replay. Great stuff.
Thanks for tuning in! One of these days I’m gonna have to get the type 17 video done
I recently gathered up all the hand planes i have accumulated over the years because my son asked how long I have been collecting hand planes. Not a collector.....then realized I have 47 of them OHhhh Crap, I'm a collector.
Nothing wrong with being a collector! With any luck maybe I can help you add a plane or 3 to your growing collection 😅
@justplanefun Looking for a Stanley #3......
@@oldmarine312- feel free to email me at jplanefun@gmail.com and we can see what we can work out
Drat ! You forgot to talk about all those patternmaker (homemade) brass router planes. Really, they were probably made at work. You have quite a few.
One of these days I’m gonna carry some of those routers to an MWTCA meet and show them off
Have a Master Quality No. 78 in my shop...and it matches up with a Stanley No. 78 Sold by Montgomery Wards. It does have the depth adjust lever, BTW: I also have the Craftsman No. 3720..(Sargent No. 79, Type 2) And both have the same nicker design...
Michael, what’s the email for sending you pics about the Sargent 79 plane casting? You never said btw, is there a version of the Sargent casting that has the adjustable lever for the rear blade? Also can solid yokes on Stanley planes be swapped into later split yoke models? Thanks, Jeff🇨🇦🇺🇸
jplanefun@gmail.com
I still need to look that up about the Sargent rabbet planes. I don’t know off the top of my head. I’m 90% sure the earlier yokes will fit on a later model. Probably just need to use the later pin as it may be a different diameter
Sent Recce email.
MJ, been trying to fix #4 BR that wasn't retracting enough. Fix was a Yoke replacement, but didn't know how. You're vid helped so much. Thx! Replaced yoke easily and plane now adjusts great. Thx again. BTW, do you know a parts source for Union X-planes?
Unfortunately I don’t know of anyone selling Union X planes or parts. I buy them every chance I get but unfortunately they don’t come up for sale very often. I recently bought and sold a No5 size Union X plane. I think I had it in the shop less than a week
Go watch Paul Sellers about the whole omg, thick planes are way better,… myth. If you’re getting chatter, sharpen better, he would say… just a counterpoint, Paul’s got about 50+ years of experience to go by… Jeff
Are the solid yolks interchangeable with the split yokes on some type 19/20 planes? Jeff
I’ll go Veritas thanks. Have a nice collection of 4’s. Will keep the type 13 sell the others for cash for a Veritas 5 1/4W. Make a Krenov Jointer for a few longer projects…. Enjoy your videos particularly the #78 series. You don’t mention Record much either… There are tool makers outside the US btw. Cheers, Jeff🇨🇦🇺🇸
The reason I don’t talk about Record planes much is because I don’t see them very often around here. There are a few folks in the US who collect and/or use them but they don’t show up in Virginia very often, for whatever reason
@@justplanefun Hey Michael, been to Virginia several times when I lived in NJ. Back home in Canada now, and see lots of Record, not as much as Stanley but a lot. Jeff
Hey Michael, I have a complete #79 Sargent plane but it has no depth adjustment. To be clear not missing just not in the casting. Is there a Sargent version with the depth adjust and if so how must for the casting alone? Cheers, Jeff
Shoot me some pics to jplanefun@gmail.com and I’ll see if I can match it
@ to be clear I need a casting I can transfer everything from my existing Sargent #79 to one that has the depth adjustment lever. Did Sargent copy that feature as well? Jeff
Very interesting, thanks. What about those planes made in England, can those be identified by the same indicators? I‘m looking to by one of those 5 1//2 planes. Its frog is of type o-g (suggests type 16+), the lateral adjustment has a horizontal „STANLEY“ stamp on it and its frog adjustment wheel is a brass one. But also the body for have a unique diagonal ribs running from the Tote base to the corners of the body. Any idea on that? Thanks
I don’t see enough Made in England planes to support doing a type study but fortunately some other folks have attempted to do just that - check out this article from Don Wilwol. www.timetestedtools.net/2016/02/20/stanley-english-type-study-draft/amp/ In the article he links to another online forum from about 20 years ago that explores some of the differences
My 2 Jack planes are an OLD Sargent, and an OLD Worth.
Nice. The Sargent is probably a really solid user. The Worth planes usually leave a lot to be desired, unfortunately
Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. I’ve posted a couple videos on UA-cam where I restore hand planes. I restored a Sargent no. 708 autoset. I love those planes. Another rare hand plane is the Stanley no. 5H or the short version of the 62
Remedy for Stanley 71 made in England model. The veritas cutter is 10 mm longer to the slot of the aduster nut-change the threaded rod in the router body for another 10mm longer. My Record 071 fits the Veritas cutters perfectly.
There is a company selling replacement fence for the 78 rabbet plane. I had a good deal on a 78 with no fence, so I went and got the replacement too, its not original, but a nice cast, mine was a little bit out of square but it was an easy fix on my belt sander.
Are all BR plane frogs the same? Are they interchangeable, e.g. can a #5 frog work on a #4 sized BR? Still trying to figure why my #4 blade can not be fully retracted out of the mouth.
Yer not deducting your income tax bill.
Good video about the components of a rebate/rabbet/fillister plane. Couple of things I don't see in your videos is anything about the blades & getting replacements or their interchangeability between planes or brands. A 2nd point you could add is talking about the depth adjustment lever. I recently acquired a rabbet plane and only discovered the thing was damaged in a subtle but unuseable way...the spur on the adjustment lever which engages with the blade notches had been sheared off by someone who force adjusted the blade depth without loosening the lever cap screw! Fortunately I was able to get a blob of tack welding on there then reshape the lever to working condition again. Something you might want to cover.
Good call. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Also - if you want to replace that lever, I have plenty of them in stock
@@justplanefun thanks but I managed to repair mine and I doubt you would have one. I own a WS Tools branded A78 rebate plane made around 1951 in England. It looks like a copy of a Stanley no 78 but a little different.
Hi. I've got a type 6 Record #4. Its blade does not fully reteact at end of adjustment. Pretty sure blade and cap iron not original. Did Stanely make cap irons differently, such that the cap iron slot is different and therefore making end of travel different? Thx!
The majority of the time, a standard issue Record chip breaker should be the same as a standard issue Stanley CB. It’s possible that you could have a chip breaker from another off-brand such as Rockford or an early Sargent or something. It’s also conceivable that you could have a chip breaker from a transitional plane - the spacing on those was different as well
I have chip breakers available if you’re unable to find one locally
Oops, I have a Bedrock #4, not Record. So ... another way to ask is; do all Stanely (including BR, Baily) 2" CBs have the same dimensions including the "y" adjusting lever notch?
Thanks, MJ, I am enjoying your information and presentation. I have an old stanley number 5 body (includes the frog) that I can't identify the type. It has two patent dates, both ending in "'02." The sole is corrugated. There is a large v-shaped rib on the back end of the plane that points towards the front of the plane. I think that this is near the type 9 style, but I can't find any pictures of or references to bodies with the big v-rib. Thanks for any help that you can provide.
ua-cam.com/video/K3aUaQZfpg8/v-deo.htmlsi=KFnUB_EyK6rmQ4pD This video on type 9, type 9a, and type 10 planes should answer your question(s). If not, let me know
Lots of questions about the 10 1/2. I thought mine was complete but didn’t work well. I now realize ( and thought prior to this video) I have the wrong chip breaker and blade.
I have a couple of type 1 chip breakers available but unfortunately I don’t have any of the old style blades at the moment
Awesome! I am interested. I think that my blade will work. Mine has a “s” casting on the body, front adjusting plate and lever cap. Is that significant?
@@kirkliggett9470email me some pics to jplanefun@gmail.com Does your 10 1/2 have the adjustable mouth like the type 1 shown in the video?
@@justplanefun yes, it does.
Did Stanley originally put on the sweetheart decal on the totes?
For what we now call the sweetheart era (generally considered Type 13-15 though it technically started with type 12 and reportedly carried thru into type 16), Stanley put decals on a lot of totes (but perhaps not all). Most likely early 1920s thru very early 1930s but I haven’t seen anything definitive in a publication that substantiates my assertion
Ask.them if they want a stanley 55? ❤
Depending on what you need to get for it, I may be interested
I bet your missing alot of screws for depth.
I have a lot of inventory, especially common items such as screws
Do you buy tools? 😅 i got a 55
I’ve been known to buy some tools from time to time.
@8:33 5-1/4 bought mine for 30$ it's amazingly well made
3:52 oh, we’re doing this old carpenters tale. 4:24 oh please, this is getting ridiculous. 4:48 ok, you got me! That’s pretty funny
3:26 sudden urge to put a Holtie, Lazarus, or HNT Gordon in your hands
0:59 WHAT?! People do that? I will only rarely use vinegar, and when I do, it is specifically to strip electroplate, and it only takes 5 minutes in a 50/50 mix of 30% vinegar and 12% peroxide, followed by a clean water dunk
I just finished watching this video, and I found it very informative. I bought a Stanley plane years ago at a swap meet, and never used it until just recently. To my surprise I discovered that it was a # 4 Type 7. I love old tools so now I also have a # 5 Type 6, and I'm looking forward to more planes in the future. It's good to know that people like you are making these tools and their history available to woodworkers. Thanks!
My No.45 came with the set of cutters shown in this video. Did Stanley offer additional cutters in different profiles for purchase separately? If so have you done a video on them? 🙏
There were special cutters but they’re most often associated with the No55. Feel free to shoot me some pics to jplanefun@gmail.com and I’ll take a look
is that a #12-20 UNS thread?
If UNS means un-standard, yes it is. I have the taps and dies available
I HAVE RESTORED GUNS THAT WERE PITTED, IT IS CALED MICRO WELDING. IS THIS POSSIBLE TO REPAIR DAMAGE ON A PLANE WHERE IT IS THIN, LIKE THE MOUTH.
It really depends on the person doing the job. I got a old sears cast iron 4" planer jointer that broke the arm off. He welded it back together but you can see a Crack.
I have a friend in NY who has done some mouth repairs on more valuable planes such as the No62
I MET A MAN THAT WORKED FOR STANLY, HE CALLED THE GROVES IN A PLANE AS PITCH GROVES, AND JIM SAID IT WAS A SALES GIMIC. WORKING WITH WOOD WITH PITCH IT WAS A PLACE FOR IT TO GO, KEEPING THE PLANE ON THE WOOD, IT WAS NOT FOR MAKING THE TOOL LIGHTER.
I’ve heard it said about it being a sales gimmick too. But I also know folks who swear by a corrugated sole for pitchy wood too
NEED PARTS FOR A 78, FENCE AND ROD, DEPT GUAGE ABD BOLT, HATE HAVING AN INCOMPLET TOOL.
I replied to your email ref: the parts
Union guy here, most X-planes are uncommon, with the X5 being probably the most common of them. The X0(#1 size) and X2 being rare. There are scarce sizes, meaning i might see one for sale in a year, but otherwise uncommon suits them. Currently there is an increase in demand for them that pushes the price up.
