Nice rundown Michael. I bought a Stanley type 1 a while back thinking it was an original Cope patent plane. Henry Cope patented the plane in January of 1884 and sold it to Stanley that same year. Needless to say, there aren't too many in existence. Cope's original model had a different collar to hold the iron. He redesigned it shortly thereafter to the style Stanley ended up using. The only other difference with Cope's router was that it was scaled down being reasonably smaller than Stanley's version.

They’re definitely out there. Prices seem to vary wildly, usually based on how many parts are included vs. how many are missing

I restored a no.71 last year and it’s made in England, however, the finish is closer to the type 14 (stand in) and it has beechwood knobs with silver (colour) barrel nuts (including the fence and foot). I have another (very similar looking unit) arriving today in the post (without any attachments), which I got for a good deal on. It has markings under bridge where foot mounts: an X and the number 20. I only have a 1/4” cutter but fortunately Veratis cutters will fit. Little rust spots return to the checkered area even though its stored well and my other vintage tools not affected. I considering to wipe gun metal blue on the main body when restoring new arrival. All my tools are regularly used and have been tuned for my woodworking needs. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, much appreciated, as that book is insanely expensive 😁

Agreed! I do love a router plane - although I may have to part with some of these now that the video is done. I still have lots of non-Stanley router planes in my collection
Ha, thanks for the shout-out and the guest appearance of my type 6. Great video again. We need to hit some more estate sales soon. By the way, ever see anyone reverse the iron in the router? Is it meant to do that? The 'post' that holds the iron seems completely reversible.
I’ve seen some better woodworkers than me that have done it on UA-cam. I’m sure there are applications for it

Type 1s are pretty uncommon for sure
I know mine is a type 15, and it has nasty plastic handle. Plus I've got a Record copy of a 71 and a 71 1/2

Hmm, a lot of well deserved accolades. But, I would like to ask about the steel. Particularly in the blade... does the later models have the same (better!) steel as the earlier? Or, will I be sharpening more often.
The reason I don't already know is I have a homemade one.
I’m really not sure about the steel on them. With improvements in metallurgy over the years, the irons could easily be higher quality, however, Stanley may have been looking for ways to cut production costs so it’s a crap shoot - could go either way 🤷🏻♂️
I have a late version (type 15?). The amount of work to sharpen the irons was surprising, they are extremely hard!!! They hold an edge for eternity it would seem. Hope that helps 😀

Unfortunately I don’t have enough visual aids to make an effective 71 1/2 video. If you can get your hands on Walter’s book, the 71.5 type study has some great pics

I have a type 4, and the handles have beads. Maybe leftover inventory from the type 3?
That’s very possible. Lots of crossover from one type to the next - across a variety of planes. I would think that knobs would be a common one to cross over from what we now identify as specific “types”

@@justplanefun well, oversight happens. I get it. It's just that UA-cam dims parts of the screen to draw the attention to the video. It makes the video super bright and little too jarring.
Another Stanley 71 1/2 copy was made by Carter in Australia. Only difference was one groove on the base for the fence.
Do you have one? If so I’d love to see some pics of it
