Why Science Says Metalheads are Smarter - Heavy Metal Music and Intelligence
The Unexpected Link Between Metal and Intelligence: Reacting to Metal Music Fans - Forget the uniformed stereotypes, new research suggests a real link between heavy metal music and intelligence. In this video, we delve into the science behind this surprising connection. We'll explore how complex music structures, thought-provoking lyrics, and a community that fosters critical thinking might contribute to metalheads' brainpower. Turns out that fans of bands like Megadeth, Morbid Angel, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Melallica, Deftness, Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura, Gojira, Falling in Reverse, and Meshuggah might have a higher IQ than you might think. Is there a cause-and-effect relationship, or just a correlation? I think in interviews, Ale defers to her sisters because she largely agrees with their answers. On the other hand, when she does a live post by herself or is interviewered, she has plenty to say. As opposed to being shy, I think she is about whatever gets the task at hand done correctly, yet also respecting her sisters with no need to overly assert herself.

followed J girl bands since Scandal in 2009 , however nearly all female I have shown , get addicted as well. But look at kiss all male and a very high percentage of males at gigs. yes, older malesinto metal of 70s 80s and 90s of metal are drawn to new J girl bands for the musicianship. I check out all new female bands live clips... I they are good players... I dont follow. simple as that. Also they dont play from an ego point of view. They play for the song ! Checkout FLIP for example.

I fully agree with what you've presented here. One hypothesis I'd want to add (returning to MBTI as always), is that heavy metal music may be more attractive to intuitive dominants or sensor types who tend to be more intuitive (like the ISFP for example) which would explain the tendency to find more curious, open minded and critical thinking people amongst them. Another thing that may add to that is that it's also more attractive to introverts who tend to also prefer intellectual or creative activities more than socialising or going to clubs. This just gave me an idea : maybe you could expand on your video on the link between music taste and personality traits by going a step deeper to the link between type (maybe type groups or dominant functions) and music taste? I guess this would be a pretty interesting topic to explore.

I can only say that this band seduced me in every way, less than 6 months ago on a cloudy and not happy morning, just browsing UA-cam I saw a reaction to a song, I didn't know it and to tell the truth the new songs didn't interest me so I didn't open it the video, as I spent a few minutes on this page then I went to see what it had to offer and I didn't expect anything, wow the music made me feel like I was grounded and those beats and choirs sang in my head for the rest of the day, the music was P.S.Y.C.H.O.T.I.C , after this I'm a big fan.....thanks The Warning,

I speak 3 languages fluently. I've always been into intellectual stuff like science, technology, history and spirituality. Metal is my number one music genre. I've met many Metal fans with similar profile. At the beginning I thought it was some sort of coincidence but it happened many times. However, I've met dumb Metal fans too. Metal community is very diverse.

I first discovered Band-Maid sometime in 2017 when I was first getting into Japanese music through the UA-cam recommendations and didn't think much of them. Based on their appearance I made some (incorrect) cynical assumptions about how and why the band was formed. It didn't help that I'm still not a big fan of their earlier stuff before they wrote their own music and that was weirdly the only music of theirs I remember getting recommended at the time. It wasn't until I stumbled across their live video of Onset that I realized they were incredibly talented musicians and that I should try giving them a chance. I watched more live videos and then started seeing newer music videos for songs they had written that I enjoyed. Relatedly, I remember disliking Band-Maid fans during that time as well. It seemed, at the time, that any Japanese music video I watched had Band-Maid fans in the comments saying Band-Maid was better. Or saying the drummer wasn't as good as Akane or the guitarist wasn't as good as Kanami. I really dislike that kind of behavior from fans. I don't notice that behavior anymore so maybe it stuck out to me more then because I had a cynical, negative opinion of the band or maybe the fans have gotten better about writing UA-cam comments on other bands videos. I've never really gotten into Nemophila or Lovebites. Probably because they seem to lean more into metal and I am not really into metal. They are unquestionably incredibly talented musicians and I try to come back to them occasionally to see if I've learned to appreciate their music.

I have been going to rock gigs for over 40 years now , I'm from the UK. Girlschool was the first female rock band I saw around 1982 , they were in a predominantly male rock world but they were never ridiculed by the fans because once on stage they rock hard and played true with no BS . For me rock/metal kind of became stale to the point I did not bother going to any more gigs , a lot of the male bands have this generic sound ( same old same old ). It was Babymetal that opened a new door for me to step into this Amazing Japanese female rock scene . The musicianship and talent just blows my mind and discovering new band makes me want to hear and see more... Take Band-maid 5 females no egos but 5 totally different personalities who have bonded to become the best rock band in the world today ( just my opinion ) . Incredible musicians , make the audience feel like they are part of the band , the best interactive band on the planet . These Japanese bands wear their hearts on their sleeves and are not afraid to show their emotions .. That's why I like them so much and no going back now... roll on June for Lovebites :)

@psychologyofrock btw, I was able to chat with Michael Mills himself, too. A hell of a nice guy! You should listen to his song Whatever makes you feel superior. Some background info: some years ago, he did cover Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. Sang it in original key. A while later, I wanted to share it again with a friend. It was gone. I asked him about what had happened. And he aswered (not in exact words, here): "I've recieved so many hateful comments, I deleted it. Fighting depressions anyway, it was just pulling me down." I introduced myself as the german guy after the peterdoe2617 profile, who wrote these lines, back then. How my friend Peta even commented back then: "don't let those keyboard warriors put you down. You're brilliant!" While I would never attempt to touch a person like him (would a person in his situation like to be physically touched by anyone?), he shook my hand, when saying goodbye. I can't hepl it: I feel humbled.

I was listening to Cool and the Gang, John Denver, and the Jackson Five and similar music until one day in my early teens I saw an album cover with 5 guys on it with one of them with devil horns and holding a devil tail and was thinking, what is this. I bought the brand new, album AC/DC Highway to Hell. From that I found Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and eventually Rush. 2 STEM Masters Degrees later, I design and build computer systems that build, launch and control rockets. My wife is also a metal head and she has 1 artistic degree and 1 STEM degree and she is an engineering manager that designs and test drones. Our oldest son has a STEM degree and designs artificial intelligence systems. My sons and I go to 4 to 6 concerts a year with the last one being Disturbed and the next one being Halestorm. We are patiently waiting for The Warning to announce a US tour although we may go to either Shiprocked or Louder Than Life this year.

That was so cool, thanks Nena! (although I'm far from being intelligent, haha😅) Metal has been my pillar for so long, and thanks to the genre, I do think I'm a better person than I'd be without it... my best friends, my first love (she was a huge fan of Ozzy😆), all the trials, all the little misses and victories, every important moment of my life has Metal as soundtrack. I don't look down on other people, and I don't take bulls**t to my face. I'm not religious (as in, I don't follow any institution that monopolizes the concept of God), but I'm a Zen Buddhism practitioner (avid fan of Dharma, a Death Metal Taiwanese band that literally has Zen sutras for lyrics)... I think it makes perfect sense. It's because of Metal I'm also becoming a fan of Classical and Jazz. I'm not prozelytising Metal or acting like it's a panacea, I don't care if someone is a diehard fan of Taylor Swift or whoever is at the top of Billboard or Spotify. But for me, Metal is sincere. It's not hiding anything or pretending the world is something it's clearly not. Here's the thing... the darker the night, the brighter the stars. We listen and learn and act accordingly. We struggle but won't quit.🙇🤘

I came across Into The Void by Black Sabbath at the age of 15. I had just found to like SciFi. So this was a pretty perfect match. And it wasn't a lalala-lovesong. During holidays from school, I worked at a factory, cutting and folding cardboard. Some jobs where pretty boring. So I learned some lyrics by heart (mainly also, to grab their meaning better: I'm german. So the meaning of lyrics don't come as easy to me as to a native speaker). Songs where i.e. Solitude /Black Sabbath; Lady in black/Uriah Heep; Ogre battle/Queen; Thank you/Led Zeppelin. Nena (and others): you might love the history of the Wacken Open Air W:O:A. The largest metal festival on the globe with a now 30yr-ish history. I.e. this one from 2006 is great (The > 1hr long version) Full Metal Village (Wacken-DOKU, 2006) (I'm located some 50km south of Wacken. Although not a festival guy. But I've lately been in concert to see Toehider. Michael was here with a bassist and a drummer from Sweden. Talking with the bassist, after the gig: "that sounded pretty complicated to play at times, huh?". "Yes! It is complicated for me. But it's fun!" And then we talked a bit about skills. How, with the indian sikh religion, men and women are equal, just that every person is asked to never stop learning to gain wisdom. How he would like to learn spanish on top of swedish and english, and I'm fascinated by the never-ending learning, when it comes to cooking.) Just typical headbangers conversation. LOL

4:18 Maybe (probably ?) one thing that tilt the balance towards metalheads is that the path to get into metal already is a filter. Maybe you don't get into metal by "pure accident". By that I mean that it's either your own "music taste" research that leads you there, or your circle of friends, but you rarely "stumble" on that kind of music by being a "mainstreamer". You already have made a step in life that separates you from the "sheeps" (mainstream blob that anyone can be a part of). You accepted (or decided) that you are a little different, and that you will not be fed what mainstream society decided to feed the mass with. That's already a "smarter" decision that separated the "early" (young) metalhead from the others. That's already "thinking outside of the conventional box". It's an active decision and not a passive "oh well, vanilla ice cream will be fine, everyone loves vanilla anyway" kind of decision. Now if you listen to metal due to your parents already being into that musical scene, then chances are that if they are already "filtered" in the smarter category, you wil be fed with smarter background as well, and as such you are a young sprout with an "advantage" there. Yet honnestly, if you have parents that listen to classical music and are not total "old farts" close minded persons to actual world, you may just have the same advantage, with a different smart background. Anyway, fun video and 💖 from Switzerland. Stay safe out there. (Sorry for grammar and vocabulary mistakes, my native language is not english)
