Great analysis as always ! Thank you!
All your interpretations are perfectly valid and plausible.
I would go with the meaning of being trapped, that was the first thing that came to my mind with those covers. I think, in both cases the girl is being forcefully kept away from reality but her strong pose shows that she's rebelling against it and is being present in reality although society does everything to keep her away from it. The bare feet could show that she's still being grounded to reality despite everything that's trying to pull her away from it.
I'd tend to include the titles into the meaning of the covers because I think one was purposefully chosen to complete the other. In this case the albums would show an evolution of the situation, where "Mayday" is a call for help against the situation and "Error" shows that it's already too late and that there's an error in the system, or going even further, that she's the error in the system because she's rebleling against it, which would also link back to the meaning of the song itself where the protagonist is an error or possibly a virus in the system that will try to break it.
All of their art is so ingeniously crafted that it leaves an immense rabbithole to go down in interpretations.

I've not read anything about the meaning of these album covers so here's my take. The Mayday cover is how things would be in a perfect world, the Error cover is how we must experience things now (virtually) because we've f-ed up the planet. It dovetails nicely with their band name and mission statement, The Warning.

I think that Mayday and Error album covers are definitely connected; Mayday being a warm live state but the model is more or less oblivious to it and Error is a cold sterile environment plus the VR headset suggesting what Mayday was but in a virtual state. So you have a progression from reality to virtual reality - which was and is becoming a sign of the times.
It’s so very sad but is becoming the way people are seeing as normal, instant gratification, and that sort of lifestyle. I’m old enough to remember playing out in the streets and making things to play with and having camps or Tree houses, cooking potatoes in a fire, making toast over a fire - none of that now, Phones or Games consoles or Computers, to me that’s not a real life!

Yup, nailed it as always. I see ‘Mayday’ as what the subject sees, feels, experiences within her virtual reality and ‘Error’ as what we (outside of that VR) see in reality. It continues the ‘Matrix’ theme they use throughout the media for the album (the green & black of monochrome monitors & the waterfalls of 1s & 0s) ‘Mayday’ is the matrix, ‘Error’ is the battery pods or the Nebuchadnezzar.
P.S. the room in the ‘Error’ art is definitely an old mainframe room with the elevated floor and ventilation slots for delivering the massive amount cold air required to keep them cool. A fantastic touch to complete the theme I feel they were going for. They clearly put a ton of thought into this entire EP/LP combo.

If I remember correctly, they said in an interview that Mayday is what the girl in Error is seeing through the headset, so if that's the case then I think that's why her face is covered in Mayday, because it's through VR, which is covering her face, so it would make sense for Mayday's head to be covered, since it's not true reality and the covering of the head in Mayday is symbolizing that distinction

They were asked about the meaning of the Error cover in an interview (in Spanish), they said that: it is in fact the same girl on both covers; the Mayday imagery is what she sees from the 'closed room' of the Error cover, but she does not know it.
The interviewer exclaims that she got chills at hearing this and shows them her arm, to the delight of DPA.

I considered that the Mayday cover is the virtual world in which the lady depicted on Error is living in. Goes counter to the order or release, but TW tends to be tricky like that and they use easter eggs in their media to give a wink and a nod to TWA members who might get the inside joke or know the story behind an image. I also think they intended to use Mayday as the album title for all 13 songs but with the Covid lockdowns and disruption in manufacturing CDs they opted to release an EP which consisted mainly of the songs they had already released as singles from the album. Also, they chose a song title as their album title that reflects a theme consistent with all 13 tracks. And, just as the previous two albums were named for a title track on the album, Error followed that course. I'm not sure this trend will continue with Keep Me Fed. Will there be a song titled that? We'll see come June 28th.

One of Martirio's themes is a person not seeing or avoiding the obvious toxic life/relationship they are in and consciously turning away/not following advice from outside sources on their need to get out of the situation. Nena touched on this a little but I think it is another major theme.

  • @ThisUsernameIsAlreadyInUse
    @ThisUsernameIsAlreadyInUse Місяць тому +12

When I saw the two covers, my thought was that it is the same girl and the Mayday cover is what she sees in the VR-Headset.
So it is a transition from an to-good-to-be-true natural environment to the harsh reality of creating our own escape from reality.
So maybe in the Mayday cover she is fully covered because she isn't physically there.
It could imply a loss of reality, escape from the real world, favoring utopian vituality over the real imperfect thing.
That would for me allign with the messages of the songs.
I've read an interesting theory some time that Error is kind of a concept album, separated in propaganda songs (Diciple, Money, Error, Kool Aid Kids) and the journey of one of the "diciples" from being isolated and indoctrinated to becoming self-aware and freeing themselves from that martyrium.
It is worth listening to the whole album with that story in mind, giving a new perspective.
Man the band is inspiring for sure.

Great analysis, Nena! The room for the Error cover looks to be a data center. I work in IT in a data center so I instantly recognized the raised tile floor with the perforated tiles. A data center is where the racks on servers are located for large companies. The floor is often raised to run cables underneath as well as to push the cool air up from the floor (the perorated tiles) to be expelled through the ceiling (opposite of what most people would be used to). Makes sense as the setting for the character with the VR headset as opposed to the Mayday cover which is likely the VR world as others noted.

Great analysis - I also think something similar to your view or maybe (eyes wide shut), in light of the song titles and lyrics. They seem to me to be describing human behaviors in relation to societal constructs, and the uncertain navigation through those, which can be wrought with peril and potentially negative consequences. Whether blindly following an ideology or ignoring warning signs due to ignorance or by choice and a self perceived moral stance. Shutting out the “real world” (physical not digital) through our entanglement with technology, and replacing actual physical interaction with the virtual, can be like the sun setting and darkness enveloping us - the world around us disappears and is replaced by a simulation. What does our future hold?(a line from 21st Century Blood). I guess we’ll have to just wait and see🙈

    Three things ..............
*#1)* The songs on the Error album, according to the girls, were written in 2019. Long before they signed a recording contract with Lava Records. Nothing was changed about them except being produced by David Bendeth's style.
*#2)* The Mayday cover looks like the a figure from the *Martirio* video. Since an earlier version of *Martirio* was played live in 2019 during their set in Argentina. According to Dany. *Mayday* was in the running of calling album #3 *Mayday.* Dany liked *Mayday.* Guess Pau & Ale didn't like *Mayday.*
*#3)* Again, according to the band, there was a concept theme they were going for with *Error.* That shows in the cover art as being stuck in a cold computer world that an A.I. want to be free. They had to abandoned that theme since *Mayday* EP was released for touring purposes.
Personally, I don't count the *Mayday* EP as part of there discography. Since it wasn't wide released (available only at the concert venues) & all songs did appeared on the *Error.* But I do count their *Escape the Mind* EP on their discography since those songs were not released on any album.

Lava wanted to build momentum since they're *Enter Sandman w/ Alessia Cara* was released in 2021. Putting out an CD with no booklet can be cheaply produced. So the *Mayday EP* was produced to tour on.

Only *"Martirio"* was performed live prior to 2021 (Rockville concert - 1st live show Warning done since their *"Quarantine Show"* in The Cave during March of 2020.
Th we songs for Error were written in 2019. They had a Kickstarter Campaign in 2019 to pay for a North American Tour & studio time to record album #3 (Error) in 2020. They started the 2020 Tour Dec. of 2019 but had to canceled the tour in Jan of 2020 plus delay going to the studio.
