    I grew up exposed to many genres of music; classical, classic rock, alternative rock, pop, jazz, new age, folk, Scandinavian traditional, Celtic, and of course, Disney. In my teens, I found Japanese and Korean music, then branched out to Russian pop and various others. I also spent a lot of my school years in choir.
    My tastes are very eclectic, but I stay away from genres like country and rap. Most popular music (Swift, Cyrus, etc) doesn't appeal to me, though I do enjoy certain artists' songs.

    I just came across your channel today, what a treat! Ive already watched a few of your videos and will continue to do so.
    For me, im open to most genres of music and over the years have found myself changing the type of music i listen to for a while. My absolute favorite, which i always go back to, is 60s and 70s progressive rock. I became aware of this music around 11 or 12 and could not get enough. I think why I am so hooked on it is because prog is SO different than anything else, and part of my personality has always been "I don't want the same old same old!" Plus for me, there is SO much creativity and talent in this music and SO much emotion that it always makes me feel good to listen.
    Thanks so much for rhis channel, im excited to delve into some of your other videos. ❤

    I gravitated to metal early in life due to how freeing it was to me. I've branched out over the decades, my master playlist has everything from Judas Priest, Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera but also groups like Epica, In This Moment, Breaking Benjamin and Seether.
    You were spot on about mood derterminating what a person may listen to.
    Thanks again for doing the channel.

      Thanks for sharing! I actually grew up in the punk scene but it was my love of guitar that eventually brought me to rock and metal. Not only does music I listen to correlate to my mood, but also how I am feeling about life. I think music corresponds to our inner soundtrack, if that makes sense. :) Congrats again on your channel!

    I do also wonder how much the way people consume music matters. Unlike in the past, most of the stuff in the charts now is pretty tame, almost middle-of-the-road, compared to the kind of music younger people went for before. Has there maybe been a shift to younger people being more passive in their tastes, wanting music to have on in the background while they concentrate on something else, be it work, homework, gaming etc. With large spotify playlists, people aren't even actively choosing what they listen to now.
    Obviously, people in the past still did other things at the same time as listen to music, but there's a distinction between doing something while listening to music, and having music on while you are doing something else. The latter lends itself to 'blander' styles of music, and that's exactly what's most popular now. I cannot work while listening to music I like, as it's just too distracting.

    • @psychologyofrock
      @psychologyofrock  Рік тому +3

      That is an EXCELLENT point about how people consume music mattering, and we won't have answers through research on that for awhile. I think music used to be more "sacred" because it was more rare. People could only afford to have a certain number of albums or cds, so they were coveted. Now, all music is everywhere, and I think people grow less attached to it because it is easy to take for granted. I can't imagine music simply being in "the background". :) Great comment!

    Happy new Year! Greetings from Germany. My parents had have an abo of CD's that were monthly delivered with the top 20 Charts Songs in Germany. I found myself drawn to the more heavier Rocksongs like my father, as my sisters were more about lighthearted popmusic. So I ended up hearing more music with dad, who introduced me to Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Maiden etc. From there on, I discovered my own way in metal bands and loving the energy they are emmiting ( hope thats right) to myself and my fellow metalbrothers. Love out to All of em in the entire World

    When I really started to love music (late 1970s), my biggest influences were what I could hear on the radio and in particular the radio stations my older sister listened to. I have found that later in life my mind craves greater complexity and sounds I that are new to me, and the internet has been a great boon to discovering a huge variety of music including a few gems that I totally fall in love with.

    Stunning video Nena! As you might know, Rock & Metal are my favorite genres, and I related a lot with how some music can bring comfort memories. Ozzy and Guns are the ones who take me back to my early teens, during a period which my only responsibility was to go to school. Music is a great ally in our well-being.

    I explored other genres before settling into rock and metal in my teens. I have been opposed to country as it depresses me and has led me to some very dark thoughts, even self destructive thoughts. I do admit these days I’m a Johnny Cash fan, and I also enjoy Me And That Man. But mostly, it’s metal.

    • @psychologyofrock
      @psychologyofrock  Рік тому

      Yes, for me country is one of the least appealing genres, but I agree that Johnny Cash's music is something else entirely. I like a lot of it. Musical taste is a fascinating topic! Do you prefer old metal or new?

    • @DarkLordNick999
      @DarkLordNick999 Рік тому

      @@psychologyofrock I find myself going old school a lot, though I do enjoy some of the newer bands however I come across them. Either through social media or seeing them perform. Both Visigoth and Unto Others opened for King Diamond at two separate concerts I’ve attended, and seeing a band I’ve never heard of before perform live will make me a fan, especially when they’re opening for a band that was my reason for buying the ticket in the first place. So there’s that mix of old and new.

Then got introduced to killswitch engage and I’ve liked metal ever since.

    Being a ‘military brat’ opened me up to so many different varieties of music, making friends from all over the world and being exposed to Maiden, kittie, ebola ‘Thai metal’, Gary Moore, Joe satriani, Loudness, cro-mags.. I think back in the 80’s and 90’s being exposed to various musical genres was easier... Headbangers Ball, 120 minutes, yo-mtv raps, Z-rock radio and many other stations gave wider access than now... digital entertainment platforms push or ‘recommend’ a trend these days.. if I would’ve not been looking up music from my youth, metal church etc.. I would probably never of heard of bands like .. ‘Unleash the Archers’, Sabaton.. etc
