  • Reacting to and Analyzing 3 Incredible All-Female Metal Bands from Asia You NEED to hear - Japanese artists Nemophila and Hanabie & Indonesian artists Voice of Baceprot:
NEMOPHILA - Japanese heavy metal band Nemophila rose to fame quickly after forming in Tokyo in 2019. The five-piece group consists of vocalist Mayu, guitarists Saki and Hazuki, bassist Haraguchi-san, and drummer Tamu Murata. Nemophila released their debut studio album, Revive, in 2021, followed by their most recent album, Seize the Fate, in December 2022. They've also played numerous live shows, including opening for established metal bands like Loudness and HammerFall.

    Nemophila's UA-cam: / @nemophila_tokyo
VOICE OF BACEPROT (VOB)- Voice of Baceprot, a heavy metal trio from Indonesia, blends blistering riffs and powerful vocals with social commentary. Formed in 2014, they sing in English and Sundanese and have garnered international attention for their raw energy, outspoken lyrics, and defiant spirit, challenging stereotypes and pushing boundaries through their music. The band consists of Firda Marsya Kurnia on guitar and lead vocals, Widi Rahmawati on bass and backing vocals, and Euis Siti Aisyah on drums and backing vocals.

HANABIE - Hanabie has been together since 2015 and burst onto the scene in 1999, quickly gaining recognition for their flamboyant costumes, intricate makeup, and energetic live performances. The band's sound is a unique blend of punk rock, heavy metal, and electronic music, often incorporating traditional Japanese instruments and melodies. The band's lineup is Yukina on kawaii and and harsh vocals, Matsuri on clean vocals and guitar, Chika on drums and Hettsu on bass. The band has released numerous albums and singles, and has toured extensively throughout Japan and abroad.

Hello Nena, thank you for this very well done analysis! I've been a huge fan of all three bands for a number of years now and I think all three are exceptional and unique! My heart lies with VOB though because of their activism and courage. They are the first band to reach the rock/metal world stage while wearing/practicing hijab, not only opening doors for (and inspiring) Muslimahs around the globe, but also smashing stereotypes and toxic perceptions, exactly what the world needs now (and probably always will...)

Nemophila is my favourite band. The emphasis on positivity that you mentioned is one of the main reasons I love them.
VOB are just excellent. So tiny but with so much attitude. 'PMS' is my favourite VOB song, largely due to the vocals.
As for Hanabie, I think Yukina's ability to shift from growl to that incredible squeaky kawaii voice is as spectacular as Mayu's shift from fry-scream to beautiful, melodic cleans.
Three great bands. Asian women have revived this ancient metalhead's enthusiasm for music.

Lovely Nena, another great video. Great choices for this one. NEMOPHILA is so great. Had the honor of seeing the live here in L.A. back in March when they tired the U.S for the first time. Such a great performance. Yes, they're covers are great... especially their newest covers from their latest EP. However their original material is the best. As good as their albums may sound it's nothing compared to seeing them live. They're like The Warning in that regard....they sound better live which huge to say because their recordings sound great to begin with. I'm eagerly awaiting them to return to the U.S. so I can see them again.
VOB is great as well, do love them. Great covers as well as their original material. Probably my favorite thing that I've seen about them on UA-cam is the video of a zoom interview they were doing and the interviewers surprise them by bringing Tom Morello in on the call. So great to see one of their biggest influences bestow his blessing upon them. I very much want to see them live. I had the opportunity to see them at their first headline show here in the US back in August. Unfortunately due to travel delays, they had to cancel the show. I had another opportunity back in October when they were going to tour as an opener for Mongolian metal band The Hu. Unfortunately, they ended up having to drop out of that tour. So, I have yet to see them live but I'm hoping I'll be able to in 2024 🤞.
As far as Hanabi, I've heard the name but to be honest I never really listened to anything of theirs until I saw this video. They sound very interesting and I'm going to look into more of their stuff. So I trust I'll find some good
So, Nena thank you for another great video. Looking forward to don't you have planned for the next one. Would love to see you do a breakdown of Lovebites. Such a great band. So much talent. I wish I got into listening to their music much sooner than I did. Unfortunately I'm guilty of judging a book by its cover when it comes to them. I initially saw a photo of the band without their instruments. I assumed by their outfits that they were another one of the many pop bands coming out of Asia. I'm not into pop so I pretty much dismissed them based on that. It wasn't until I happened to come upon a UA-cam video spotlighting female metal guitarists. It was in that video I saw clip of Midori and Miyako displaying their badassiveness as guitarists. I went and checked out their music. First song being "The Hammer Of Wrath" and I was immediately hooked. I'm just sorry that I was such an idiot for judging the book by its cover. But that's one of the great things their look is a complete contrast to their music. That's one of the biggest that draws you to them. Would love to see you do a profile of the.
Again thank you for another great video, looking forward to what's next. Take care and stay safe 🤘😊🖤

Hey Trey! Thanks for the great comment! I know what you mean about initial impressions- I assumed that Band Maid would be more of a product than a band and I couldn’t have been more wrong! Amazing you’ve been able to see so many great artists and hopefully in 2024 you can catch the others! 😊🤘🏻

Thank you so much for highlighting these phenomenal japanese bands. Some of my favorite are Lovebites, Band- Maid, Nemophila, and Hanabie. However there are two That you have not mentioned that are just as phenomenal as the bands you have already talked about, Aldious and Fate Gear. One of my favorite bands is now on an indented hiatus that band is Mary's Blood. Fear not Saki continues to with Nemophila. Mari began a solo career and rejoined Japanese thrashband Crucified, Rio began a solo career under the name Yako Ikuta. Eye is standing a solo career as well. Some info on Band - Maid. Miku Kobato formed Band - Maid, she had Previously worked at a Japanese Maid Cafe. She wanted to.
Integrate the Maid theme with rock music. That is why members of Band - Maid wear Maid outfits.

Thank You however I forgot to mention another great band Twin Temple. Twin Temple was formed by the married couple and practicing satanists Alexandra and Zachary James. Being fans of rock and roll of the 1950s and 1960s, and bands such as The Platters, Roy Orbison, and Buddy Holly, they wanted to incorporate Satanism with this musical era and culture. They call their style a music satanic Doo-wop. Alexandria, vocals are like a jazzy Amy Winehouse. Twin Temple has open for Ghost and Glenn Danzig. If the satanic theme doesn't bother you And you enjoy 50s and 60s, rock and roll. I would highly recommend this band.

Me conquistó totalmente! Es mí segunda favorita de esta hermosa banda Nemophila! Es mí opinión. Saludos desde Buenos Aires y quedo suscrito por Tamu mi favorita ❤

Excellent choices !! These 3 bands are a great grouping. Of these, I also like NEMOPHILA the most. KOIAI, EAST OF EADEN and LONESOME_BLUE are all similar and very new bands that share some of the same members. Another good grouping would be FATE GEAR, GACHARIC SPIN AND DOLL$BOX who also share members. Another grouping more in my taste is BRIDEAR, ALDIOUS and TRiDENT. Life-long MAIDEN fan so LOVEBITES is my very top favorite of them all. 🤘🐺🤘

Nemophila is my favorite band. Pure 🔥🔥🔥. World class musicianship with an incredible and versatile singer. I love their variety of musical styles with positive messages. Endearing and charismatic; the joy they exude while playing is infectious and the bond they share is inspiring.
Hanabie is also one of my favorite bands. Unique, energetic, and fun. Matsuri is a riff machine and Yukina is a fireball.
Since Lovebites is excluded and you want to highlight lesser known bands here are some new up and coming bands: East of Eden, Paleneo, and Killt Melt Land.

A good part 2 or separate vid could be for Destrose without them MANY female j-rock & metal bands most likely wouldn't exist. Between 2007-2015, 20 members produced 20+ new bands like Nemophila, Lovebites, Aldious, Fate Gear, Disqualia, Cyntia, Lonesome Blue and Mary's Blood. NYE 2008 4 of 5 members quit Destrose and formed Mary's Blood.
Saki joined Mary's Blood in 2012 and was sole composer until there hiatus (2022) she ALSO was in Destrose 2009-2010 lol. She's now in Nemophila 🤘

Metal isn't really my thing so I don't have strong opinions about these bands, other than being pleased to see them doing well, but the musicianship and song-writing ability from that corner of the world is quite something. I love so many bands who are tiny in terms of popularity - under 10k subs on youtube mostly, so they have regular jobs and just play shows in small clubs with 2-3 other bands each night they play, yet they sound like full time bands from over here. Here's a little list of examples in no particular order, which I have a slight feeling I might have shared before, but here they are anyway, if anyone is interested.

  • @masaegu
    @masaegu 5 місяців тому +1

Japanese speaker here. "Hanabie" is a 4-syllable word, but you, like 95% of YT music reactors, pronounced it in 3. The "bie" part is 2 syllables = "bi" and "e". To pronounce this band name without studying Japanese, I would suggest that you say "Hannah" in British English and follow it by saying the English acronym "B.A." The problem is that your (and many others') pronunciation changes the meaning of the word completely. "Hanabie" is a highly poetic word referring to the cold weather still occasionally lingering into the spring, which to us is the season for cherry blossoms. If you pronounce it like "Hanabi" in 3 syllables, you are saying an entirely different word meaning "firework".
