  • 46 & 2 by Tool Lyrics - Psychological and Theoretical Breakdown & Reaction, and Explanation of Carl Jung's concept of the integration of the "Shadow Self". Tool consists of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey. and bassist Justin Chancellor (since 1995, replacing their original bassist Paul D'Amour). Forty Six & Two was the fourth single from their second major record release Ænima in 1996. In this video, Nena Lavonne offers and theoretical and psychological analysis of the lyrics of the song that refer both directly and indirectly to Carl Jung's Shadow Theory. The Shadow is a Jungian archetype that exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings. The shadow forms out of our attempts to adapt to cultural norms and expectations.

I'm very much looking forward to you analyzing their other songs.... especially "Lateralus".....the song many call their masterpiece.
As far as my favorite Tool song.....I don't know. It's difficult to do because I can probably think of one then another comes to mind then another then another, etc. I guess my favorite is the one the one I want to listen to next 🤘⚡

Forty Six & 2 has been one of my favorite TOOL songs for many years. My feeble analytical mind has been able to figure out a portion of the meanings to it, but then you came along with this excellent video, and made me so much more aware of the meaning of the song, and why and how I have reacted to it. Thank you for this analysis and breakdown! It gave me chills again just seeing the lyrics while you walked through them. This is such a powerful song and the first one that made me a true Tool fan! My life partner just passed in November, and it was a process I opened and accepted... it was a major catapult in my conscious journey, and my latest tattoo incorporated "Forty Six & 2" in it for this very reason.

@@psychologyofrock He was an amazing illustrator and penned original comic books. In one of his frames, he depicted a story similar to our relationship where he sacrificed himself for me and my sons. I was cradling his limp face in my hands. I took that frame, extended the drawing, inked the art, and took it to my tattoo artist who also added the words "Forty Six & 2" plus the artist flair and filigree. It's a symbol of how that catastrophe propelled me into my biggest jump of consciousness yet.

This explanation is a prime example of "synchronicity." I listened to this song a few days ago, for the first time in a while & for the first time I wondered about the meaning behind it. Since then I've thought about it briefly when I noticed something reminding me of it but it quickly slipped my mind each time. After several remimders, today I decided to look into it a bit more & came to YT in search of a video with lyrics, when I stumbled across your's. Your's not only has the lyrics but has them broken down which was my ultimate goal.
    Very nice interpretation btw!

I just have to say I can't stop listening to this it is just by far the best explanation of the song that I've heard and I love the fact that you give tool so much credit because I don't think people really realize how good they actually are without really loving music. I feel there's some people that just really love music and understand how much it touches you emotionally and if you're like that and give tool a chance they are on a whole new level and completely embody the potential beauty of what music can be. I love the way you described the lyrics as beautiful because they are and I don't think people realize that because of the style of music they use

TOOL is my favorite band- PERIOD. 😂 Favorite album is Lateralus by far, but they’re all great. When I first heard 46and2, I was going through major changes in my life. That’s what the song meant to me- change and evolution. I drew a design of an eye with 46 an 2 etched into the iris and had it tattooed on my back. It signified stepping into my shadow/ my new self. I had to “shed” many people and bad habits when I made this step. I was the most artistic and spiritual during this time in my life. ❤️ I love Maynard, btw. 😁

I think the muscle memory lyric also refers to how trauma is stored in the body as procedural memory. Through using techniques such as EMDR a person can bring traumatic events to consciousness in a relaxed state and integrate them into their episodic memory. I would say that this is my favorite Tool song, even though it's definitely not the most complex instrumentally, but it's one of my favorite rock songs overall. I was introduced to Tool by my sister when I was a kid and she introduced me to some not so good music, but also great music like Chevelle and Tool. Danny Carey's drumming along with the profound lyrics and Maynard's unique vocals are my favorite parts of Tool's music. Whenever you hear a Tool song, there's no mistaking that it's Tool and I like that about them.

The premise is humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. So 46 and 2 and nothing to do with depression.

I think everybody has it wrong. Not every tool song is about enlightening. Some are very dark. I this one in particular is very misunderstood. to me it has nothing to do with what the video says. It's a serial killer with split personality or with a repressed dark side, that is about to murder again. Why? because of the term 23&1. Which is when you are in prison confinement, you have 23 hours inside your cell and 1 hour to get sun. The song is about a guy who was a killer either himself or one of his personalities called the shadow (his darkness) that he had previously represses to live a normal life. At the beginning the shadow is calling him to join him. Throughout the son song we se his shadow reminding him he has done it before and thus his muscle memory to kill and the shadow is anxious to do it again. The character is thinking about stepping in his double personality or shadow self and knows that if he follows that path he will get surely prison confinement but it will be for him and for his shadow 23&1 times 2 is 46&2. Sentence for him and for shadow self but added together. What do you think?
