Durston X-Dome | Pitching Guide
Dan Durston provides a detailed guide to pitching your X-Dome tent. This video covers all models including the 1+ and 2P versions.
The basic pitch involves assembling the pole set, clipping it to the fly, and buckling the inner tent inside. Our this pitching guide covers this process in full detail, showing how to pitch just the inner tent, how to pitch it for stormy conditions, and how to pack it up.
The X-Dome is available on DurstonGear.com.

    If it didn’t have a pole hub system I’d buy it

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear День тому

      Why don't you like hubs? The hubs here are machined out of aluminum and stronger than the poles. We've never seen one fail, and they have a lot of advantages. It gives us better vent positions, allows the pole set to be fully interconnected so it pitches more simply with no pieces to lose, and allows us to use a larger tubing across the top. Essentially by upsizing the spine tubing across the top we get the strength of a dual arch pole set, but at a lower weight and with quite a few other advantages. - Dan

    • @Tom-hl7wc
      @Tom-hl7wc День тому

      @ I’ve seen quite a few msr tents fail close to the hub. The proximity of the break means it’s impossible to do a temporary repair with a sleeve. I don’t agree that it’s more simple and I don’t think that what must be a small weight saving is worth the additional risk of the weak junction that can’t be repaired in the middle of the night in bad weather conditions or days from a car. I would say that the hub systems I’ve seen have utilised aluminium but I’m not confident that carbon is the best choice either. You often see failed carbon mountain bike frames that you didn’t see with aluminium back in the day and the failure is often catastrophic. You read a lot of comments from people with failed Easton carbon tent poles too.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear День тому

      @@Tom-hl7wc The MSR hubs are very different. They are plastic and much weaker (that is actually what breaks in this video) whereas the hubs we use are aluminum. They are about 5x as strong as they poles, so even in destructive testing we never see the hubs break. Also most of the reports of failed Easton poles are glue issues for the aluminum inserts. The carbon poles themselves are harder to break than ultralight aluminum. We've never seen someone break the carbon poles in our tents. They are new, but we also have a lot of them out there being used in tough conditions. Ultimately everything can break, but the hubs and carbon shafts used here are stronger and less likely to break than a more traditional non-hub aluminum ultralight pole set. Aluminum often kinks went it breaks, so both materials can fail catastrophically, but with our pole set it is less likely.

    • @Tom-hl7wc
      @Tom-hl7wc День тому

      I might not be using the correct terminology. I’ve seen the poles fail next to the connection that looks like a wishbone and even if the majority of pole failures are glue failures that’s still a failure. I understand that you are going to defend your tent but it’s just a fact that if it fails at that junction it can’t be repaired in the field. For now I’m going to wait until the single person version of the Arcdome comes out. All the best.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 15 годин тому

      @@Tom-hl7wc The ArcDome uses the same glue and Easton poles as the X-Dome and has also had the same glue failures. Our tents are more popular so you may read more reports of about our tent, but the glue issue affects both tents similarly. We are working with Easton to get this improved which should improve tents from all brands. The wishbone hubs you've seen fail are the plastic ones which are far weaker than the aluminum ones we use. It is true that if the aluminum one broke it couldn't be field repaired but they are much stronger than the poles so they don't break. It's kinda like worrying about if the pole sleeves in the ArcDome broke - you'd be in trouble if it happened but they're really strong so it won't happen. Anyways, they are both nice tents. The advantages of the X-Dome are the lighter weight, a lot more headroom from the cross bar, ability to add trekking pole supports,, taller doorways that can be fully opened without rain falling inside, vestibule is larger and doesn't block the doorway, and ability to pitch inner only. Thanks for your interest, Dan

    Nice video. I just which you would have compared it to the BA Copper Spur, instead of that other brand, which in my opinion is one of the best tents out there.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 6 днів тому

      The Copper Spur is nice. The main advantages of the X-Dome are the non-sag silpoly fabric, quite a bit more spacious compared to their 1P, fly first pitch, 100% freestanding, vestibules beside the doorway, and ability to strengthen it with trekking poles. The Copper Spur 1 uses a single arch pole with forked ends (like the X-Dome and Hubba) but the X-Dome upsizes the spine portion of the tubing and the spine is much shorter, so I expect the X-Dome is substantially sturdier.

    Need help deciding between this and SlingFin Portal 1 for bikepacking. This tent has a packed length of 18" (so it definitely won't fit between my handlebars) while the Portal is 14". This tent is lighter than the Portal but will it stand up as well to strong wind and rain on my future trip across Iceland? Need to wait see more reviews in adverse conditions

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 7 днів тому

      These are both very nice tents. We have a Portal here in our shop (amongst many other tents) that we use to benchmark/cross reference. The X-Dome is very comparable in strength (e.g. both can support about 17-19 lbs on the roof). Neither is a true 4-season tent, but both are quite capable 3+ season tents. I think the X-Dome has an edge when the optional trekking pole supports are used in a counter opposing fashion (not just vertical like the Portal) but it's a minor point since they are both quite good. The main advantages to the X-Dome are that is much more spacious tent than the Portal 1, quite a bit lighter, uses non-sag poly fabric, and naturally pitches fly first so the interior stays dry during setup in the rain. Thanks for your interest, Dan

    • @durstongear

      @@durstongear Thanks for the comparisons. From my understanding the Portal 1 also can be pitched fly first right? Still, I believe the X-Dome has the advantage here of being able to pitch the fly and inner body at the same time

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 7 днів тому

      @@Daniel-lc5qi Most tents in North America (including the Portal) pitch with the poles clipping to the interior and then tossing the fly over later. So they are naturally an inner first pitching tent. There are ways to pitch them fly first, but they are not 'natural' so they are more difficult to do and typically require extra parts (e.g. groundsheet) or more difficult pitching methods (e.g. crawling under the fly when it is half pitched). These tents theoretically can be pitched fly first, but the difficulty of doing so combined with often a need for extra parts means that it rarely happens (e.g. you probably can't remember how to do it when the time arises). Whereas the X-Dome has the poles on the exterior where they connect directly to the fly so it 'naturally' pitches fly first simple and easily.

      It is several inches longer than the typical 1P tent, since the length when laying straight is about the same but here you can lay diagonal for about 4 more inches. So on average we find people are happy to about 6'4". So hard to say but it could work well for you. It depends on your preferences and how bulky your sleep setup is.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 12 днів тому

      There are pros and cons. Our X-Mid 1 has dual doors but with the freestanding tent we had the opportunity to expand the floor to fill the back vestibule (since there is no trekking pole in the way). This creates more floor space while hardly adding weight (since it avoids more zippers) but does mean there isn't a second door and vestibule. So more floor area but only one door is the trade off.

      The upper limit for comfort is subjective and varies from person to person. The pack itself is fine with 40-45 lbs but it does have less padding than a heavier pack so some people may prefer a lower limit. Usually if you keep things below 35 lbs normally and just go above that occasionally then it should work well.

    Please Dan and Team, will there be an easier option any time soon (like Amazon or european dealers) for your european friends to order this tent without the horrendous customs+shipping costs from Canada? 130€ on top is quite something. This excellent tent really deserves it and would literally crush all competitors even more then :)

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 23 дні тому

      These taxes are actually something you would pay on any tent. In Europe there is 12% duty on tents and VAT of about 20%. If you buy locally, these taxes are included in a higher price, whereas if you buy internationally they are charged separately. So it is high tax but it is not possible to avoid and would be paid on any tent. We do actually have some dealers in Europe, but they still have to add these taxes into the price like all tents.

      The groundsheet clips to the floor corners. You can clip it to the bit of webbing there.

    Do you now recommend the x dome over the x mid solid for the typical wet and windy weather we have in UK hills and mountains? What would the advantage of the x dome be over the x mid solid for these conditions?

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 27 днів тому

      They both are very good. The X-Mid is very protective for a really low weight. The X-Dome is best if you don't use trekking poles, or value freestanding.

    Much love from Hungary (bought 1st gen X-mid and X-mid pro)! Part of the handstrap family. Tried my poles without it ('cause Skurka said so), didn't like it. Appreciate you give that option (also like the low calorie QoL features like the pocket + lightstrap in the Dome. Waiting for the Dome 2). Will there be a cork grip version? Pretty please??? Where should I start a petition? It's a must for me. I have a Fizan, but the foam is mehhhhhh, so I returned to my heavier cork poles. Wouldn't mind paying triple for your quality version, if there would be a cork one. Will there be option to buy seperate piece/parts later?

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 27 днів тому

      Thanks for the kind words! We will have the strap version in a few days. Most of the cork poles on the market that are light are not real cork but just cork colored foam. We could do that, but real cord is about 3x the weight. It would add about 40g to the pole (e.g. 135g to 175g) so it is hard for us to do that since the focus is ultralight. It could happen someday, but right now the weight is just too high for cork. If you want cork, you could buy a cork grip from another brand (e.g. Diorite gear sells separate cork grips) that would fit onto the same 16 mm shaft. We do have the parts available separately.

    I'm very excited for the upcoming release of the solid-inner version of this tent. I've greatly enjoyed using my X-mid 2 solid as a solo tent, but often have the challenges of camping on slickrock or frozen ground, where I miss having a freestanding tent. I would envision using the X-dome for winter/alpine use including some mountaineering, to replace my much heavier Sierra Designs Convert 2. I have a couple of questions for Dan. Could you specify the exact length of the trekking poles needed to (optionally) reinforce the X-Dome? I have gotten custom-cut ultralight CF poles for my X-Mid at 120cm, and wonder if that length would be able to be used for the X-dome as well. I don't always bring my adjustable trekking poles with me, and when I do, I sometimes wish to use them for day-hikes and scrambles from a hike-in basecamp, so wouldn't want them committed to supporting the tent. As the X-Dome will likely see more winter and mountaineering users than the X-Mid, it would also give a rationale for offering a different, more highly-visible color, as needed for safety. Visually spotting an X-Mid or X-Dome from a distance while on a glacier or in a snowy forest in a snowstorm would be very difficult, and potentially dangerous.

      Thanks. I added the solid inner as an option to the website now, but we won't have photos up for a few more weeks. For the trekking poles, if they are positioned vertically then it is about 44". If they are angled outwards then it is about 48". If they are angled outwards and over towards the door stake then it is about 50-52". Adjustibility is nice to have since on uneven ground it can vary.

      As long as the length adjusts to the height of the tent (about 122 cm) they should be good.

    I'm going against the grain here and I completely understand that... BUT... why would you want this if you have the X mid solid already? X mid much easier and quicker to pitch plus with the solid inner better all year round? I'm confused by this tent. It's looking like a great tent and I'm seeing videos calling it a "Hilleberg Killer" absolutely not in my opinion. It's not even a proper 4 season tent by uk standards without the solid inner? Where does this tent fit into your itinerary if you own an X mid solid already? Somebody help me out PLEASE!!

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 28 днів тому

      This is the 'regular' version so it compares most closely to the regular X-Mid in our lineup. Then we'll add a solid interior version in spring 2025 that compares more closely to the X-Mid Solid. The X-Mid is a trekking pole tent, so it'll be the lightest and it is a great choice for people saving weight. But for people who don't use trekking poles or want a freestanding tent, the X-Dome is ideal. Both tents are very fast to put up. The X-Dome is very capable but not intended for severe conditions like a much heavy Hilleberg. For many people the X-Mid Solid is an ideal tent for the UK, but if you don't use trekking pole or value freestanding then the X-Dome makes sense - especially once we add the solid interior option.

    Dan is it possible to use Tenacious tape on this Xdome material to use for repairs because i have somehow managed to put a 10mm hole in the fly sheet on mine on its 1st outing 😩 What method would you recommend ????. I cannot figure out how i have done this but i was pitching it in the dark and i did find a tent peg stuck in the ground where i was pitching so maybe it got caught on that 🤔.

    You can see the effort in every detail to make a really useful and practical tent, the only detail that I feel makes me doubt is the absence of solid material on the door. As one sleeps close to the door, that mesh will let in a lot of wind at night and will blow directly towards my body. I hope there is a new version with that solid part on the door.

      @@durstongear Hi! Maybe I didn't explain myself well, I love this interior design with black mesh, I am the type of person who loves to see a starry night or a sunset from inside the tent. And the mesh also prevents condensation that would surely be greater with a full solid interior. I mean that the door does not have that solid lower part that the rest of the tent has, and through that small open part, a little more wind can enter. Personally, I love that black mesh design, perfect for camping on cold days and also on sunny days and clear nights. I hate the condensation of tents with solid interiors, the ones with mesh are more versatile to me, but if the door had that lower solid interior, it would be perfect. Thank you for reading our opinions.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 29 днів тому

      @@JavierMartinez-gu5pd I see. I did use full mesh on the door. The reason was so that it is easier to see into the vestibule (e.g. if you are cooking) and because this side is further form the fly so it is less drafty already. If there are enough requests I will add the solid fabric here too, but I do like the improved visibility when I am working in the vestibule.

      @mariablanco-m7s 28 днів тому

      @@durstongear hehe yes, I was also talking about that small part on the door where there is no solid material, otherwise the mesh interior is perfect for 90% of the time, places and seasons where I camp. Dan, thank you for reading us and always listening to our opinions. ☺

    I'm so torn with waiting on the 2P...do we know how much bigger the Fly Area will be vs the 1+? also weight difference? guessing negligible. I have the xmid 1 solid so also thought of waiting for a solid version as well :>

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 29 днів тому

      We won't have those specs available until launch, but 2P tents in general are 20-30% heavier than 1P tents, so you can make a guess from that. We will have a solid version of the 1+ and 2P in the spring.

    Hey - This looks very much equal to how to pitch the Big Agnes - Copper Spur HV UL1 - - nice tent and both the best :)

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 29 днів тому

      The Copper Spur is a nice tent, but is an inner first pitch. The poles clip to the interior so the normal method is to set up the interior and then you toss the fly over. There are ways to pitch it fly first but they require extra parts (e.g .groundsheet) and a harder to remember method, so it's not a natural fly first pitch like the X-Dome.
