My X-Dome arrives on Tuesday here in the UK, so can’t wait. The (nice!) problem I have is that I have all four X-Mid models, so some rationalisation is in order!
I'm very optimistic about this tent! It seems to improve on its closest competitor in weight, size, cost, and functionality (fly first and fly rollback).
I’m still upset you haven’t made me a hammock and matching tarp, but I’m pretty excited to be getting this in the mail tomorrow. I’ve been bike-touring/packing more often then backpacking and I often find spots a free standing tent won’t work (or hammock). So this will hold me over till you make my dang hammock lol
Thanks for giving it a try. The tax to the UK is high but it is the same tax you'd pay on any tent (mostly VAT) so the difference is just that the tax is paid separately instead of being included in a higher list price.
Can't wait to get shipped this tent to Germany. It incorporates so much great features by still keeping it as flexible and adaptable as possible at the same time to personal needs. I am sure most times just using 4 stakes and I am done. If so and the durability and waterproofness is also that great, it will be a disruptive game changer especially at that price point. If there will be any Pro Version please keep your ingenuity and try to incorporate the most sturdy material out there, eg challenge sailcloth Ultra X. Even in case of a weight penalty compared to DCF, maximum abrasion resistance is the way to go for such a great sturdy tent construction, as a PRO Version.
Im looking forward to seeing the x dome series expand like the x mid series did. Ill definitely be getting a 1+ at some point....at last, a very lightweight 1 person tent that doesn't look like a coffin....a big plus point for backpackers/wildcampers my age 🤣
Here in TN!!,, WAITING FOR MY DOME!!! I LIVE ON THE PLATOU CUMBERLAND CO. MY FIRST TRIP WITH MY DOME WILL BE TO VIRGIN FALLS.. ABOUT 20 MIN FROM,MY FARM.. 😅
Just ordered the X-Dome 1, can't wait for the summer to use the heck out of this tent! Curious if the X-Dome 2 will be able to fit two wide sleeping mats, then that one is going to get ordered instantly:D
The tabs for a storm pitch are good, but seems really fiddly. Pulling a 2-3mm guyline tight around the tab will be impossible to open/un-tie in the cold, no? And even if it's not cold you need to un-tie it before you can take your tent down. Maybe there is another easier solution? I'll still get the tent though, it just seems great. Good work!
Are you referring to the guyouts? Where you mean it would be fiddly to tie the cord around the guyout after it's wrapped around the pole? There are quite a few ways to do it. One nice way is to use a "line lock hook" that simply hooks on without tying a knot. But also a girth hitch with a bit larger loop should be reasonable to do, and you could always have them pre-tied and/or leave them attached.
When motorcycle camping I would always bring my (now obsolete) free standing dome tent AND the rainfly from my hammock tent because it was so quick and easy to setup for a little shelter from the wet weather. I will be leaving it home on my next trip and plan to use the X-Dome fly for that purpose. Love the fly-first and fly solo option! Is there a secret handshake someone is going to teach me at some point?
Mine just came in today, something that is legitimately shocking is how small both the fly and the inner pack down. I also hadn't even considered leaving the inner connected to the fly when you pack it all up.
My tent is getting delivered tomorrow! I can’t wait! I didn’t order it with stakes, to save a bit of money. Instead I put some in my wishlist for Christmas. Would 6.5” titanium Shepards hook stakes work fine for this tent?
Thanks Dan! Looks rock solid. Curious if the 4 corners of the inner and fly can be linked (by Velcro or other means)? I’d imagine I will be pitching together most days, and that would hasten the pitching process if you aren’t fishing around for the inner corners
Connecting them would be cool, but I don't currently have a way to do that, so you do still need to connect both parts to the poles (like most tents). Would be nice to figure out something even better.
@@durstongearI’m envisioning adding a tiny bit of Velcro tape to each of the metal corners when I receive the tent, which I’d connect before packing up if the tent is dry. I didn’t know if any sort of other option existed. Thanks!
@@josh8058 It's similar to the vast majority of tents, where you do have to connect the inner and the fly to the poles, but yes it is more hassle than if they did connect as one. I'm open to ideas to make that work, but I haven't seen a elegant and light way to do it. I had a look just now at the Macpac. It looks like the inner has a grommet for the pole and then the fly buckles to that. That works for a combined pitch, but it doesn't look like the fly can be pitched without the inner. I'd like to be able to pitch either piece separately.
If we're being honest, I wouldn't say you can set up the inner first and then the outer. If you have to unclip all the clips but the floor, and then put on the outer and then reattach all the inner clips... Your basically setting up the outer and then setting up the inner. I only say this because I had heard you could, and then did it myself and thought, "No, no you can't." and was kind of annoyed. (If I had looked at it, and thought about it, and realized the outer fabric is under the poles I would have realized it was impossible to do the inner first. But I'm so used to single walled tents it didn't cross my mind.) Anyhow, I wouldn't advertise that it can be set up inner first. It's a well built tent, and I am sure once I set it up 5 or 6 times it will be much quicker and feel like less of an issue. But like you said, because you have to re do the whole inner to the outer, I'm likely to just keep it all attached. Btw, Not sure if you are considering making a dcf version, but if you did I would suggest looking at the Hilleberg tents, especially their vestibule design. The X-dome has almost the same vestibule, but the Hilleberg basically keeps the bathtub rectangle shape so you have more foot room, but has a slider on the vestibule floor attachment that you can move to have additional room inside the tent, or pull back and have more vestibule space. So you can cook in the vestibule, and then when you're done, pull the floor out into the vestibule area and gain room inside the tent. Pretty ingenious design, and it could definitely work for the X-dome.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah that slider vestibule idea on the Hilleberg is need. I'm hesitant about having the loose fabric it creates when the floor is adjusted smaller, but I do agree that being able to adjust the mix between the floor width and vestibule width is a nice feature. For the pitch, this gets quite complicated to explain in a simple way that a general audience can understand. Usually you would pitch the tent fly first and then the inner is either pre-attached or added later. If the tent is being pitched inner first, that is usually because someone wants to pitch it inner only. So it is rare to do inner first and then add the fly. Since it can do the main reason why people pitch inner first (to pitch inner only) I say it can pitch inner first. If I said it can't pitch inner first, then people would think they can't pitch just the inner. So I say it can pitch inner first, but I agree with you that then trying to add the fly later is re-doing a substantial part of the pitch. I think it's not too bad because you can leave it connected at the corners (so you're not fully disconnecting the pole set) but it is more hassle than the others ways of pitching and I wouldn't recommend someone starts inner first if they are going to use the fly.
@durstongear yeah I haven't seen the Hilleberg in person, but plan to when I head over to Ireland and Wales to hike in spring. From what I saw online it didn't look bad when it was pulled back. But just looking at the X-dome it looked like it would work well. I thought if you did the tent in Dyneema, the added weight of the extra fabric would be less noticeable. Anyhow, thought it was worth mentioning. As far as explaining the setup. Perhaps something like, " It can be set up outer by itself, or outer first to keep you out of the rain while you set up the inner. The inner can be set up alone for star gazing on clear nights. " there wouldn't actually be a need to mention setting up inner first.
Without the trekking poles the X-Dome and X-Mid are pretty similar (assuming they are pitched well). If you add the optional trekking poles to the X-Dome then it is strongest of all. It can do major snow loads like that. We have tested it to 40 lbs on the roof, which is about 180L or 50 gallons of snow.
I can't wait for this tent to be released in the Pro version. Please Dan, could you offer it in different Dyneema colors when you do so? That would be amazing! :) It will be the ultimate shelter, so exciting!
It clips to the webbing at the 4 corners of the floor. It is quite easy. If it is not windy, you can tip the tent on it's side and clip it on. If it is windy, then slide it under.
My FOMO is getting bigger with all those small attentions to detail being revealed. I want one badly now despite being content and happy with my X-mid. A question to @Durstongear If a pole section should break or fail, how do you fix that on the go? Will there be a replacement pole/repair kit included or something more clever?
Durston, can we get a video of this tent in some wind or on a trailer towed to simulate wind. I’m 10,000% confident in this tent but keep hearing people with little or some worrying about the vertical walls in the wind. I think this would really shut those comments down.
Once a 2person in dcf/ultra shows its face...possibly even with DAC poles as I fancy taking it places it probably shouldn't go...my money is yours sir.
I really like how the crossbar is attached to the whole pole set. On my Tarptent Rainbow the arch pole and crossbar are two separate pieces and I’m always worried I’m going to lose the crossbar because it’s smaller.
It is a long wait now for the April batch. We are working to increase production for this tent, as we have for our other tents (which are now all in stock).
The color is a grey-green (not blue). I think it's nice natural color, but I understand that some people prefer other colors. I wish we could offer more colors.
There is high tax in the UK, but it is the same for any tent. You have VAT of about 20% and the UK and Europe have a 12% duty on tents, so on pretty much all tents you do get charged about 35% tax unfortunately. The difference here is just that you pay it separately instead of the tax being included in a higher price (like a local tent).

Would you say this is your most snow resistant tent (with the trekking poles added), or would that be one of the Mid designs?
Without the trekking poles the X-Dome and X-Mid are pretty similar (assuming they are pitched well). If you add the optional trekking poles to the X-Dome then it is strongest of all. It can do major snow loads like that. We have tested it to 40 lbs on the roof, which is about 180L or 50 gallons of snow.
I can't wait for this tent to be released in the Pro version. Please Dan, could you offer it in different Dyneema colors when you do so? That would be amazing! :) It will be the ultimate shelter, so exciting!
How easy is it to attach the groundsheet before/after pitching? Where does it connect to?
It clips to the webbing at the 4 corners of the floor. It is quite easy. If it is not windy, you can tip the tent on it's side and clip it on. If it is windy, then slide it under.
My FOMO is getting bigger with all those small attentions to detail being revealed. I want one badly now despite being content and happy with my X-mid.
A question to @Durstongear
If a pole section should break or fail, how do you fix that on the go? Will there be a replacement pole/repair kit included or something more clever?
You can replace a section if you have a spare. We will also have a repair sleeve in a few months.
You mention the number of guy out points varies depending on the model... Makes me hopeful the solid version will be more stormworthy
The regular version does very well for an ultralight tent but we are always working to improve.
6:19 Oh, maybe I don't need those double door layers as much as I thought. 🙂
When are we able to buy standalone inners?
Hopefully in the spring
I think I may ask Santa for one of these!!
Do you need to fold it or can it be stuffed back into bag? Feel like I have been taught to stuff and not fold over the years!
Stuffing it is fine. Either is fine with silpoly.
Take my money!
Durston, can we get a video of this tent in some wind or on a trailer towed to simulate wind. I’m 10,000% confident in this tent but keep hearing people with little or some worrying about the vertical walls in the wind. I think this would really shut those comments down.
If you search for Andrew Beavers on UA-cam he just posted a video of it high winds and snow.

@@durstongear heading there now.
@@durstongear wow, nice work. That thing is bomber.
@@LongbowAdam :)
Once a 2person in dcf/ultra shows its face...possibly even with DAC poles as I fancy taking it places it probably shouldn't go...my money is yours sir.
Have shipments started ?
Yeah they are about 70% shipped out now.
@@durstongear Nice ! I ordered in the last ones, so can't wait for mine to be shipped to install it in my French mountains ;)
I really like how the crossbar is attached to the whole pole set. On my Tarptent Rainbow the arch pole and crossbar are two separate pieces and I’m always worried I’m going to lose the crossbar because it’s smaller.
Yeah having it interconnected was a goal here. Losing it or just stepping on it are concerns otherwise.
Love your products but i hate the production time
It is a long wait now for the April batch. We are working to increase production for this tent, as we have for our other tents (which are now all in stock).
Same old 💩blue color,i'm outta here! 👎
The color is a grey-green (not blue). I think it's nice natural color, but I understand that some people prefer other colors. I wish we could offer more colors.
Got my dome plus coming on
the 2nd December to Lincoln UK, but just got a text message from DHL wanting £99 for customs!! RIP off government!!!
Best design free standing shelter appropriate with world high altitudes trackers current needs, couldn’t wait for the 2P Version, i love this vid, the utmost amazing whereas the owner’s @ creator’s himself demo this, rare, cool & smart, Very Much Thanks Dan!, Salute🫡
Thanks for the kind words and using our gear!
