    Just got done watching ALL of the videos in this series. I loved this series so much and can relate to all of the emotions you were feeling out there. Sometimes it's the hard things, the things that scare us and the things we question why we want to do that are the most important. Solo backpacking has ruined my life in the best way possible. Not only am I best version of myself when I'm out on trail by myself, but that's where all my growing happens. Knowing I can be 100% self-reliant out in the backcountry has been the biggest confidence booster I've ever had in my life...and you did this all in grizzly country!! Thank you for sharing your experience. Now I've got hiking the Great Divide Trail (in my Durston X-Mid 1-P tent) on my bucket list!

    I LOVE this! I first heard about the GDT from the UA-camr Darwin on The Trail, then read Jeanine Hoffart's brilliant blog about her 2017 GDT thru hike. Good on you for going for it solo. I'm totally inspired, Plenty of time to rest when we're six feet under!

      I hope you love the X-Mid as much as I do! I started the trek with the 2P, and while I appreciated all the space, I ended up loving my 1P. It felt "just right" for space, footprint, and ease of setting up. And obviously the weight savings helped ;)

    Sorry to be late checking in on this, Tara. Somehow missed the notification, despite being subscribed to the channel (??). You are one tough, courageous young woman, to be out there alone on a remote, sketchy trail like that, with your GPS glitching and no world-class hiker at your side. Congrats. I'm sorry now that I bailed on my own plans to do the northern segments and possibly meet up with you. Maybe next year....

    • @tarafrey-durston2606
      @tarafrey-durston2606 4 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words! Luckily the glitching was something I figured out - sometimes I just had the close and re-open the app a few times, so not a huge deal in the end, but kind of scary if my battery was running low on my phone! The GDT can certainly feel remote at times, but luckily I had Dan with me during that section fo the trail, and since this was my third time on the GDT, it was feeling a lot more familiar than I anticipated. Dan did all the navigating on our yo-yo, so I thought I would be "blind" out there, but it's amazing how much I recognized. I am IN LOVE with this trail, and hope to get out on the GDT every summer/fall in some capacity.

      Good to hear you were on the GDT this summer too! There is a Jackpine High Route alternate, that is GORGEOUS, but has some scrambling bits - not my cup of tea! However, the Jackpine valley is quite a slog (we did it twice in 2017 - not terrible, but trying), so Dan was attempting to put together a Jackpine Medium Route alternate. It skirted the most scrambling part by taking 2 (or was it 3?) different passes, but the next pass he had planned was steeper than we anticipated, so we joined back onto the High Route at Perseverance Ridge. Then on the final pass, Dan picked a slightly easier one. So all in all, we did a bit of a choose your own adventure. Dan will likely upload this alternate for future hikers. I mention it was slow just because it is back to back to back passes. Stunning up there!

      Dan was wearing a prototype of the Drop pack, but I was using a Hanchor Marl that I've used for years (we used them on the yo-yo of the GDT in 2017 as well). Great pack - a bit heavier than we usually use, but hefty for the bushy trail, and waterproof.

I live about 200km away from the western border of Kakwa in Prince George BC. I've never really spoken to anyone about their fears when hiking alone or how to deal with them. Can you shed any light on this? Any resources on animal safety that you personally like?

      @@durstongear And that is your favorite? How many miles is it? I am still deciding, since my earliest possible start date will be 10July, between a) CDT sobo thruhike or b) GDT + Pacific Northwest Trail + Arizona Trail. The decision seems quite impossible!

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  4 роки тому

      @@HerbalistGuybrush Yeah it is but you have to value things like remote/wild over things like good trail. Section G is really hard and not well maintained, but super wild and rugged. It's about 120 miles / 200km for Section G (Robson to Kakwa).
      One option to consider is hiking the GDT plus part of the CDT. Hiking from Kakwa to about Yellowstone would be awesome and would take about 2 months.
