Great success 👍 +1 for an optional poleset with shorter segments, ideally under 14" for bikepacking. It could even be an alloy pole set since weight is a little less of an issue on a bike.
Well I've been sceptical that the X Dome wouldn't be able to handle moderate winds, it's all well and good take a weight on the top but 30+ gusts from the side... ? Well its been well and truly proven its a solid 3+ season tent, especially when the solid inner version come out. A guy took it into the mountains in the Lake District (uk) and put it through its paces in 30-40mph and driving snow. I'm so pleased to be proven wrong or at least had it proven to me i can trust the X Dome. Superb.
I already own a X-Mid Pro 2+ and this new X-Dome 1+ offers amazing versatility and real freestanding for less than 1 Kg with all the Durston tents smart features ! I've just ordered it and will try it in France and Norway this winter. Thanks again Dan !
The specs at that price point relative to the competitors is super impressive, same goes for the other X-Mids. Would love to eventually see a bikepacking pole option eventually. Although my X-Mid started as a backpacking tent, motorcycle camping has taken over my free time. But the tent just came out and I'm sure those things will come with time. I'll likely sell my X-Mid 2p in favor of one of these when the time comes. Super impressive stuff.
One of the most important aspects of gear presentation that backpackers really want to see that’s always forgotten is the tent pack. The mass and volume when it is rolled up, how it fits in your hands or stored in the backpack. For ultralight, how the tent pack fits together with other gears could help visualize the how much or little space it will occupy.
Yes that would have been nice to show. The tent itself can pack very small. It packs to 4L easily and 3L if you pack it nicely. The poles are longer (about 18") so the packed length is long if the poles are present but you can also pack them separately and put the tent in a much smaller stuff sack.
This tent is perfect for hiking guides and outdoor instructors. Having a one person tent that has a little bit more space, can be set up from the outside because you will hike in the rain with clients and have trekking pole supports when using it in exposed windy/winter conditions along with the door not dripping down on the inside of the tent when opened. I just bought a new tent a few months ago (I couldn't wait any longer) but now you are making me want to buy a second tent
Interesting design, and I really do appreciate the fly first/outer+inner pitch as they are not very common in North America (they are however very common in the EU). I also noticed the center low peg loops, which are nice for pulling the outer further out and up for more airflow. Some criticisms: While your bottle test does give a vague idea as to how it would handle snow loading (and it is kind of unfair using trekking poles in that test as you are comparing to a tent that does not have them), it really does not give any indication as to how it would handle wind loading as that force pushes the tent over and down flattening the facing side and breaking the back poles. A real test would be how it handles wind load (and it's failure point) using a wind machine with and without the trekking poles. Crossing twin poles rather than Y joints would also make the tent even stronger for a slight increase in weight (that and single poles are so much easier to work with and less likely to break than Y joints). Otherwise looks like a good lightweight tent, though for me I have more interest in the 2p version for a (I presume) second door, second vestibule, and increased through ventilation.
The bottle test is without the trekking pole supports, so it is a fair test. The X-Dome can do triple without the pole supports. But yes I agree with you that it is only one type of load and other circumstances can be different. The corner guylines help a lot and trekking pole help a lot if you are in severe winds. With the poleset design, we upsize the spine portion that is just one arch, so it uses larger tubing to achieve similar strength as dual arch but at a lower weight. Cheers, Dan
Nice video. I just which you would have compared it to the BA Copper Spur, instead of that other brand, which in my opinion is one of the best tents out there.
The Copper Spur is nice. The main advantages of the X-Dome are the non-sag silpoly fabric, quite a bit more spacious compared to their 1P, fly first pitch, 100% freestanding, vestibules beside the doorway, and ability to strengthen it with trekking poles. The Copper Spur 1 uses a single arch pole with forked ends (like the X-Dome and Hubba) but the X-Dome upsizes the spine portion of the tubing and the spine is much shorter, so I expect the X-Dome is substantially sturdier.
Absolutely amazing! I am in love with my xmid, hands down best tent material and design on the market. The value, service, quality, layout and performance of these tents cannot be matched. Proud to be a part of the Durston gang!🎉
Just ordered - I have a BA Copper Spur UL2 that I love, but this tent seems to have everything I want for a LASH of the AT next spring: freestanding, double wall, less weight, roomy vestibule for gear, smaller footprint than my 2-man, and silpoly for those rainy weeks on trail. I also like its muted color for stealth camping. Cannot wait to get it!
Dan, yet again your attention to detail and uncompromising attitude to materials and design is paying off! I think for many this will be the PERFECT tent! For me, it's 99% there, as I really would like a "winter" solid inner; fully solid, with generous vents (zip, velcro, with struts?) and I'm sold! Keep doing what you and T do. Loving your work!
You’re a f*cking genius Dan. This is an incredible design. Kudos man, well done. For those wondering, the “best” 1p fully freestanding tent - the Nemo Dragonfly Osmo - comparing packed weights (with stakes, bags, etc.) this is about 5.5oz lighter, and looks loads roomier, more headroom (2”), more stormworthy, and is fly first pitch. And this is $60 less. I don’t even need this tent, I do pretty well the X-Mid even in rocky/beachy conditions, but I might just have to pick one for the bougie solo treks. Thanks for being a true innovator in a world where “innovation” amounts to using thinner fabrics to cut weight on basic designs. 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah the X-Dome makes a lot of sense compared to other fully freestanding tents. Similar or less weight while being a lot more spacious, stronger, and easier to use
Great tent. Have been using a first gen X Mid 2 for several years and have literally zero complaints. Your tents are so perfectly designed, I can't figure out why people bother spending more and getting less. This looks like a good alternative when camping in rocky places that staking is hard.
I am updating my Christmas wishlist now haha! I've been on the hunt for my "perfect 1p tent" for a while now, but haven't seen anything that checks all the boxes until this video. I have the X-mid 1p and the X-dome addresses every minor conniption I have with the former. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these!
At last! You do not disappoint Dan, it looks amazing and has great features. That 1+ space is no joke, no need for a 2 person tent if I am alone. Large opening looks easy to get in and out of and the storm worthiness looks superb. Love how you can add tracking pokes to increase structural strength, genius detail. I can not wait see how it performs!
This is exactly what I need. I think many 1-person tents are too small and have instead considered buying a small and light 2-person tent. I'm very glad I waited for the X-dome 1+. The internal space, the weight, and the possibility to reinforce the tent with trekking poles in the way you have designed it is really good. Ordered now :)
Dan, one thing I think would be a neat addition to this tent would be to include a polyester vestibule storage pocket, not unlike the Nemo Dagger OSMO's "landing zone". I currently use the Dagger, and the vestibule pocket is my favorite part of it. Vestibules on their own are amazing, but water can still trickle underneath and soak any gear you might have. Having that pocket has allowed me to keep my extra gear out of my inner tent even in the worst storms without having to worry about water. Having an ounce or two of extra fabric, with such an improvement to protecting your gear, is 100% worth it.
After a few seasons of using trekking pole tents, what I kind of miss is having a trekking pole handy after my tent is set up, I often find myself in need of one to hike down a slope to get water or take an evening stroll. It doesn’t sound like a big deal but the older I get the more dependent upon the poles (or one pole, anyway) I tend to be. I really like the design and space.
Yet another innovative and exciting piece of gear. Ill have to wait for another iteration because I have a little one on the way. But man im excited for the free standing tent option!! Just grabbed a kakwa this year and my xmid pro1 is my favorite tent ive used
It is simply a joy to watch how you demo the tent. You are exemplary person thinking about the product, its usage, its outcome. Chapeau bas! And I love the comedy moment, like the other tent cracking 🙂
@@christianbrodt9009 Eventually yes. We need to get that designed, produced, and then enough in stock. Could take up to a year but we expect it to happen.
Hi Dan! Great tent. The only thing overlooked in this video is a comparison shot when packed between the X-Mid and this tent. Anyone mulling these two options might be interested to see how they compare in size and weight as that's the determining factor to getting the Dome tent over the trekking pole tent.
Not what I was expecting going off the doodle on the web site but in reality you have way exceded what I had imagined it would be. A top job, nice one!
Yeah it was pretty different than the teaser :) We didn't want to give away too much as we have other companies following our ideas. Glad you're liking it.
This looks phenomenal with your usual excellent level of details the big tent makers don’t think of. I love my X-Mid 2 but setup can definitely be more work on rock slabs in the Southwest and gravel pits in the far north so I’ve been considering adding a small freestanding tent back to my lineup. This will be perfect for me and the extra space for my dog means I don’t need to get a 2p! It will be too late for my fall Southwest camping trips but can’t wait to put it to use this spring packrafting, backpacking, and bikepacking.
I love it! Dan, I've been critical of some features of some of your other products. You took notice and defended your products. This time, I believe you hit it out of the park. This is an ingenious design. It is just what the market needed for solo hikers. Especially when you think of all the areas that have tent platforms but not many ground sites, such as you find in Northern New England. I love the floor design. I'm blown away by the structural integrity. And considering all the features it has and all the benefits, I am amazed at the weight. I was planning to get a Tarptent Double Rainbow in either the Ultra or DCF to use for solo trips at places like The White Mountains, where you are constantly camping on platforms. But I like this design better.
It would be great if Dan's tents could eventually be offered in Ultra as well. But using the high tenacity polyester is definitely a step in the right direction.
Now that is awesome 😍 my X mid 2 has withstood some serious winds here in the UK, and I was thinking of getting the solid 1....now I want this 😍😍😍 thanks for replying quickly to my email, I wish every outdoor company were as customer friendly as Durston 👍🏻
I bought the first go of the x-mid 1p years ago and it’s treated me very well, even in some nasty weather. I can’t believe this is only 6oz more than that tent. Looks like a fantastic product!
Can someone clarify 'how/where' the inner tent attaches inside IF setting up the fly first? Not seeing any attachment points on the inside of the fly nor was it specified in Dan's video. However, love the concept!
Dan you are a living legend. What a great design and choice of fabric. I have an Argali tipi tent in poly. It stays taunt in the rain and beads off water. The best fabric!
in August were in Iceland with xmid 2solid. it is very difficult to set up a tent in the weather conditions of Iceland. I had to redo it a little. I've been looking for just such a tent design for a long time. waiting for xdom2
That's my go-to as well. I was contemplating a Niak to save some weight, but I saw this a few weeks ago and decided to wait for the details. Such a tough choice!
I’ve been following you since your first prototype tent & I could see you were onto something serious and practical. I knew you’d sleep on those first few designs to come up with a truly practical 1 person tent and it looks like you’ve delivered.
Wow...I have just ordered one and I am going to be like a kid waiting for Christmas for it to arrive. For UK I would have preferred slightly more solid innner.....but hey.. it looks genuinely innovative and exciting. Nice one Dan!
At 6'3" with big feet I've had to dismiss many tents in the sub 1kg bracket but this looks to be the one I've been eagerly waiting for. Excellent, I'll get my name down first thing in the morning 😁⛺👍
Very nice Dan but darn it! There goes the piggy bank… A couple of questions for you: do you think you will make an inner with more solid fabric in the future and if so, will we be able to purchase it separately? Also, I’ll more than likely be taking it out in some rough weather. Do I need to purchase separate guylines or does it come with any? Cheers bud.
It can take a lot of guylines, but the cord is not included. We will have a solid fabric option sometime. Perhaps mid-late 2025. We will offer it separately once we have enough supply.
I have had the x mid 1 and 2 for years and they have been fantastic. After a lot of trips this summer there was times where it was a bit of a problem relying on the integrity of my stakes to hold my tent up. Definitely gonna pop on this one, and to top it off Dan just has such a great reputation.
Is there any plan to offer Alu tent poles, instead of Carbon Fiber? (It goes against Ultralight, but they're less likely to snapping/breaking than CF poles, at least mechanically.)
I don't plan to offer aluminum because carbon poles are stronger for the weight and less likely to snap than an ultralight aluminum pole. Of course you can break them, but both types will often snap catastrophically if the forces are high enough, but carbon is stronger for the weight and can take higher loads before this happens.
@@durstongear Aye, the performance to weight is off for Aluminum, Uni/work has conditioned me quite hard against CF though so have steered away from them for hiking- my one experience was a Black Diamond CF pole that snapped while keeping my Lunar Solo up in the wind (old pole for sure but Alu doesn't gather microfractures and the like as CF does over time, though obviously you need a larger circumference for Alu to become worthwhile.) With that in mind, I'll snap one of these up once they're available in the UK ^_^, good replacement for my Lunar which likely had its last multi-day trip last month 😔.

Cheers,
Dan
Thanks Dylan! I appreciate the kind words and support.

Thanks! I hope it works well.

This company is the future..
Thanks Nick!

Thanks! We are hoping to add a full solid inner option too.
- Dan
I expect nothing but well thought out designs from Durston. Very impressive.
did some industrial design in college, Always loved the design process and this is a well thought out piece of gear!
Thanks!
Thanks for your long time support!
- Dan
I do hope you'll have enough in stock
I am updating my Christmas wishlist now haha! I've been on the hunt for my "perfect 1p tent" for a while now, but haven't seen anything that checks all the boxes until this video. I have the X-mid 1p and the X-dome addresses every minor conniption I have with the former. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these!
Thanks!
Wow, you are hitting up the freestanding tent fans. Take my money.
Nice guy Dan, giving gear tubers content in a dry season.
Thanks :)
This looks amazing, I’m excited to get one and get out there in the mountains! Great job Durston as always 🎉
Thanks :)
Thanks Shane!
Dan! Take my money, please! I am at awe. Love everything about this tent!
Just purchased!
Thanks :)
@@durstongearcan’t wait to see it in person! :)
Don't camp much anymore, already have six tents and a couple of tarps and a hooped bivvy bag, but this made me want another tent!
It looks like a great backpacking tent. Will the inner mesh keep out smaller insects? I'm thinking about the dreaded Scottish midge in particular.
Yes it can keep out the smallest insects.
Very interesting tent. The test with the bottles is nice but even more interesting would have been to see how it really performs in the wind.
Will there be an option of buying the solid inner, further down the line ,if you’ve already purchased this version?
Thanks.
Yes. Once we have enough supply that will be an option.
@@durstongear thanks for the rapid reply 👍🏻
One plus with the wider head end is really smart, no need for 2P if you’re solo
I agree. It's a great design.
I was watching the countdown ... and it was worth the wait. When simplicity and ergonomics meet poetry then comes the X-Dome. Well done.
Countdowns are fun :)
can't wait for the 2p version of this! would be a good switch up from the x-mid 2p :)
Soon! Presale will occur late 2024.
*rubs hands together in anticipation *
This is almost like my all time favorite tent, the VAUDE CAMPO. WOW!
Dan Durston: Enabler.
That could be a good seller here in Britain with our weather . Looks great
Yet another innovative and exciting piece of gear. Ill have to wait for another iteration because I have a little one on the way. But man im excited for the free standing tent option!! Just grabbed a kakwa this year and my xmid pro1 is my favorite tent ive used
Thanks for the kind words and long time support.
- Dan
This is an absolute marvel of a tent. Well done.
Thanks :)
It is simply a joy to watch how you demo the tent. You are exemplary person thinking about the product, its usage, its outcome. Chapeau bas! And I love the comedy moment, like the other tent cracking 🙂
Hi Dan, will you be doing a solid inner version like the X-mid at some point? We seriously need solid inners in the UK 🙂
Yes. 6-12 months for that. The current inner is partial solid though and can work well too
Oh
Come on time! Still one week to start sending tents. Can’t wait! 🤷♂️
Will it be possible to buy the Solid Inner separately when it comes out
Hey Dan. Please answer …✌️
@@christianbrodt9009 Eventually yes. We need to get that designed, produced, and then enough in stock. Could take up to a year but we expect it to happen.
@@durstongear That‘s what i wanted to know. So I can have one fly and two inners. …?
Waiting is ok
@@christianbrodt9009 Yes. Not sure of the timing but we expect that to happen.
Bravo! This design is stunning. So well throughout.
Hi Dan! Great tent. The only thing overlooked in this video is a comparison shot when packed between the X-Mid and this tent. Anyone mulling these two options might be interested to see how they compare in size and weight as that's the determining factor to getting the Dome tent over the trekking pole tent.
Yeah that would be good to show. The X-Mid packs longer (about 17-18" vs 12") because of the poles, but is a bit slimmer.
@@durstongear I think you mean the X-Dome packs longer
You had me at Thanks for checking out the X-Dome 1+ ... Done! Looking forward to getting my hands on this and using it!
Thanks Tony!
Thanks! Glad your X-Mid 2 is working well.
I bought the first go of the x-mid 1p years ago and it’s treated me very well, even in some nasty weather. I can’t believe this is only 6oz more than that tent. Looks like a fantastic product!
Thanks for your long time support Ryan.
Can someone clarify 'how/where' the inner tent attaches inside IF setting up the fly first?
Not seeing any attachment points on the inside of the fly nor was it specified in Dan's video.
However, love the concept!
We will have a pitching video soon. There are about 10 buckles that connect from the inner to the fly. Our pitching video will show this.
Awesome thanks guys!
Patiently waiting for the DCF version 😍😍😍
Stoked on this for snow camping
Dan you are a living legend. What a great design and choice of fabric. I have an Argali tipi tent in poly. It stays taunt in the rain and beads off water. The best fabric!
Thanks!
Cannot wait for mine to arrive!
Awesome!
that's amazing! i'm looking forward to the x-dome 2.
Thanks! It's going to be really nice. You can sign up for an X-Dome 2 notification on our website.
in August were in Iceland with xmid 2solid. it is very difficult to set up a tent in the weather conditions of Iceland. I had to redo it a little. I've been looking for just such a tent design for a long time. waiting for xdom2
Wow, this tent looks GREAT!!! Another winner from Durston.
Thanks!
Hilleberg Unna was long my favorite tent, but it was too heavy. I ordered this immediately!
Thanks for giving it a try :)
That's my go-to as well. I was contemplating a Niak to save some weight, but I saw this a few weeks ago and decided to wait for the details. Such a tough choice!
Just watched the Dan Becker video, was a great watch, if you come out with a two person one I will find it hard to resist.
We will have a 2P version in a few months. You can sign up for a notice on our website :)
- Dan
Was hoping for a full setup video, as well as a photo of the packed up tent.
I'm working on a setup video. Should be ready in a week or two.
I’ve been following you since your first prototype tent & I could see you were onto something serious and practical. I knew you’d sleep on those first few designs to come up with a truly practical 1 person tent and it looks like you’ve delivered.
Thanks for your kind words and long time support.
- Dan
Wow...I have just ordered one and I am going to be like a kid waiting for Christmas for it to arrive. For UK I would have preferred slightly more solid innner.....but hey.. it looks genuinely innovative and exciting. Nice one Dan!
Thanks for giving it a try :)
At 6'3" with big feet I've had to dismiss many tents in the sub 1kg bracket but this looks to be the one I've been eagerly waiting for.
Excellent, I'll get my name down first thing in the morning 😁⛺👍
Very nice Dan but darn it! There goes the piggy bank…
A couple of questions for you: do you think you will make an inner with more solid fabric in the future and if so, will we be able to purchase it separately? Also, I’ll more than likely be taking it out in some rough weather. Do I need to purchase separate guylines or does it come with any?
Cheers bud.
It can take a lot of guylines, but the cord is not included. We will have a solid fabric option sometime. Perhaps mid-late 2025. We will offer it separately once we have enough supply.
Mmmm, how about spring 2025? Pretty please!
I have to clarify that regardless of whether it does, I am buying the tent- Alu poles would be a nice option though 👀👀
I don't plan to offer aluminum because carbon poles are stronger for the weight and less likely to snap than an ultralight aluminum pole. Of course you can break them, but both types will often snap catastrophically if the forces are high enough, but carbon is stronger for the weight and can take higher loads before this happens.
@@durstongear Aye, the performance to weight is off for Aluminum, Uni/work has conditioned me quite hard against CF though so have steered away from them for hiking- my one experience was a Black Diamond CF pole that snapped while keeping my Lunar Solo up in the wind (old pole for sure but Alu doesn't gather microfractures and the like as CF does over time, though obviously you need a larger circumference for Alu to become worthwhile.)
With that in mind, I'll snap one of these up once they're available in the UK ^_^, good replacement for my Lunar which likely had its last multi-day trip last month 😔.
Wow! This looks amazing and very well made.
Thanks!

Yet another Durston tent for my quiver!
Thanks Andy :)
