Yanmar Leaking Water Pump Repair 3YM30 Johnson F4B903 F4B
Hi guys, welcome to East Coast Sailing. Im Rob & In today's episode I'll show you step by step how to remove your raw sea water pump from your Yanmar marine engine. This particular raw water pump is made by Johnson from Sweden. The model number is F4B-903. I’ll show you what went wrong with the unit and what caused such a catastrophic leak. I'll also show you where you can find part diagrams so you can find all the spare parts needed to repair your unit. I'll also show you where you can purchase spare parts from. I’ll also show massive savings on some of the parts Yanmar are supplying using standard automotive parts which are the same (without a Yanmar price tag). I'll also show you where you can purchase alternative drive belts for the water pump and alternator which cost 5 times less. The video also shows you how to change the drive belts for the alternator and water pump. I also do a bit of metal polishing to turn the old corroded water pump housing back it a mirror like brass finish. This water pump was installed on my Beneteau Oceania however these are installed in many other makes like Jeanneau, Sun Odyssey etc.
Thanks for watching!

    This was the first East Coast Sailing that I have watched and it will be the last. I have never before seen such a hapless, clueless and incompetent display of sailing. The lack of safety equipment was the least of the errors. The sail handling was appalling, with the headsail sheets being hauled around in a Tarzan way, rather than using the winches. The sail setting was appalling too. You did not demonstrate any weather awareness at all and allowed a squall to arrie without making any preparations. If you had reduced the headsail a bit and hauled the (reefed) mainsail in then turned to a beat, you would have had brisk and enjoyable sailing. Instead you allowed the squall to arrive without preparation, and when it did arrive you were utterly clueless. You just sat there pulling on what looked like bits of string whilst your sails flooged themselves into rags and the sheets tangled themselves into mares nests. Ths demonstrated wind direction blindness and that you had no ideas of what the capabilities of your boat are and how seaworthy it is as well as an inability to deal with what was a realatively minor squall. I can only suggest that you find a decent sailing school and learn how to sail and do not take your family on a boat until you are competent. As for me, I have been sailing for over 60 years, with thousands of miles unde the keel, in evey sailable weather and I have never shredded any sails. Why? Because I took the trouble to learn how to sail and when I am sailing I think and watch what is going on.

      @@tostaky111 It was a new boat at the time and to be thrown in the deep end in these conditions wasn’t ideal. Had I been on my other boat things would have been under control a lot quicker. This was over a year ago and loads of great adventures and off shore passages sailing in 30knots. Great boat and nothing had happened like this since I have sorted out all the rigging and clutter on the deck. Also invested in a very decent life jacket and life lines. Check the follow up vid what caused the jam and the adventures to the Channel Islands. Thanks for watching 👌🏼

    Brave for putting that up, all credit to you and a very good reminder for all sailors of what can go wrong, quickly! And what not to do. But really surprised it took you 8 years no realise the importance of a life jacket and safety lines, especially in UK waters! But more importantly why take a small child?

      @@rogerlynham3119 I included the forecast in the video, no mention of the system. 20 knot gusts max, I wouldn’t take my family out knowingly into this. Much stronger than the forecast. Hence why I sail solo most the time. No sign of the system at the beginning of the vid, too late once we were out we couldn’t out run it. My son loves being on the boat and and he’s well looked after and safe. Sitting in playing on an I pad is equally as dangerous 👌🏼

    Great video, thanks for sharing some honest sailing! Lots of good advice and thoughts, after the fact. And easier to comment from an admchair. I think you did great and learned a few good lessons. We've done the same. We now keep some sails up at all times, just in case the motor doesn't like the stress. And it will be stressed with the turbulence and possible dirty fuel getting shaken off. We also head down wind. It will drop your apparent wind speed a but and with headsail somewhat shaddowed behind main it "should" be easier to furl. Also have hoven to in some nasty wind and waves with success. Try it out in moderate winds before trying for the first time in conditions like this. Great video, thanks again for sharing!

    Fairly novice myself, why couldnt you turn up into irons once you had the motor running and sheet in the main and drop it? Yeah the wind is all over the place, you waited too long but… That boom slapping around could have killed somebody or tore up the boat. Screw the jib. Let it flap for a minute… Ideal no, but a boom slamming around is far more dangerous. More experienced sailors can tell me… am I wrong? As for prevention… if I’m expecting gusty days I rig a down hail on my jib so I can drop it from the cockpit. Yeah it might blow around on the deck or into the drink, but still better than being up in a squall.

    Awesome of you to post your experience! Furlers in big winds are known to be problematic, most jibs/Genoas can be dropped the traditional way however. Buckled sails are fine, flogging bad, not only is it a sail killer, the tracks on mast are trying to be ripped out, battens broken etc. The initial high pinch course you had seemed most settled, boat in control, main backed a little but not flogging etc. If short lived, go down wind (be extremely careful not to go dead downwind and risk gybing, there is alot of power in the boat!) Otherwise, set the autopilot to about 20TWA (but by heading), bring traveller up if needed to keep main driving and use engine to assist. You can drop the jib on deck and as you are shy to wind, the jib will drop mostly on deck inside lifeline, go forward and pull it down, elastic/sail tie it and then its just the main. Lazy jacks make this easier, have main halyard ready and flaked, tell autopilot come up 10 or so and smoke halyard, go forward and help it down, lazy jacks keep it contained, sail tie and then motor home.

      @EastCoastSailing_ was your furler line on the port side or starboard? The reason I am asking is because it supposed to be on the side of rotation of the furler. If the furler is clockwise, as most are then it should be on the starboard side. In the video, you are releasing the Genoa line, but your voice over says you are pulling on the furler line. Then I see you go on the starboard side, while the port side Genoa sheet was completely let go, causing loss of control of the Genoa, making it difficult for the furler to roll. If the furler line is on the starboard side, you suppose to hold the Genoa sheet and release it simultaneously as you pull on the furler line to control the furl.

    I think the tide was actually with you in the Needles channel in order to record those speeds. Also the waves usually get a lot uglier out by the Needles with a strong wind against tide situation.

    • @EastCoastSailing_
      @EastCoastSailing_ 22 дні тому

      @morgste The speed I mentioned 8.2 knots is the through water speed. The maximum speed my boat goes through the water before hitting its displacement speed is around 8 knots. The speed sensor instrument on the left detects how many rpm’s the paddle log speed sensor turns when water passes over it located under the boat. The GPS speed over ground is the important speed to watch which will indicates the tidal state. I was going 5 knots. I had 3.2 knots of tide against me. I was going a lot slower over ground. The tide was definitely against me otherwise I’d be going over 11.2 knots over ground. You can see the high speeds on the out going journey in calm waters. Check the tidal streams for this area if you’re unsure. The tide flows out SW past the needles 1 hour before high water Portsmouth. I also have tidal flow indicators on both chart plotters for a quick check but normally a visual check near a buoy will give you a great indication seeing the wake behind. Hope this helps. I’m a far better navigator and engineer than I am a sailor. That’s one thing you don’t need to worry about 😉 thanks for watching.

    Starting the engine may well increase confidence. However having it in gear raises the potential for some loose end of rope from all that flapping to foul the prop which would definitely make an unpleasant situation considerably worse.

      @@EastCoastSailing_ Looking forward the next vid. A jammed headsail is mostly caused by - poor handling while unfurling the headsail (to be avoided by proper handling with slow and controlled unfurling to holt the furling line tight on the furler drum) - prior damage/ wrong setup (to be detected by a proper checking of a new boat!) How to deal with a jammed headsail? Tack without changing the headsail sheets, your headsail will stand back as we call it in my language. The ship will stand in the water very calm with minimal speed when you apply the right fixed rudder angle, no sails flapping. Train it! Yes train it! You will get time to relax, to rethink/evaluate, you can reef the mainsail, you can fix issues, you can use the restroom, take a meal, ...., all single handed. You don't need too much leeway for this, if you are running out of leeway: start and use the engine. This is great whenever the wind is stronger than you can handle, the crew gets exhausted, the boat needs some maintenance/quick fixes. This maneuver saved my arse several times across the long sailing career, and yes I had several times to fix a jammed furling sails (never in the harbor ....). You were able to role the headsail in later, it seems to be no roller issue but an issue at the long end of the line. Last, not least: Watch the weather (not the weather app!!!) Learn those skills every seafarer had across thousands of years (and sea birds across millions of years).
