- Hi, Im Rob & Welcome to East Coast Sailing. Today's episode covers part 1 of a 2 part documentary. I leave my home port of Tollesbury and set sail towards Gravelines in Northern France. I'll be crossing over the Thames Estuary where I have a near miss with a cargo ship called Adeline which I have met before while crossing the Thames Estuary in heavy sea fog. I also see a rescue unfold and participate in a search and rescue operation when a migrant boat goes down. Join the adventure as I brave the English Channel Solo battling freezing temperatures and large waves on the return journey. I'll also cover the harbour of Ramsgate in great detail if you have never been here before. Remember, if you want to support the channel, you can buy me a beer for a shout out in a video, hit the like button and leave any comments for content you would like to see.
Enjoy, sit back and relax in the warmth while I tackle the freezing North Sea onboard Evania, my Beneteau Oceanis 343.

Few years ago we sailed a few times from Ostend to Ramsgate and back the next day. Nice weekend trip.
Such a beautiful part of the world. Hope you went to Bruges! my favourite place. Im going to head to Netherlands in a few months! so stay tuned and thanks for watching ☺
Kudos to you for subtly expressing the view of the majority of Britons - disapproval of migration levels.
You must be glad to see the back of the Tories then!
Love this Rob. Inspiring
@@Devon_Dan_Sailing Thanks Dan 🫡⛵️🌊 I’ll be down your way in Devon in June 😉
Nice one - might see you for a sail. Salcombe always a good anchorage
ahoy capn rob! another great vid mate ✊🏻🏴
Thank you bud. Hope you’re keeping well. How’s the boat search going ? I’m about to get stuck into that project boat over the coming months ⛵️🌊👌🏼
Great video, Robert. 🎉❤
Glad you enjoyed it 🥰⛵️👌🏼
Nice job 👍
@@richardhall7822 Thanks Richard, hope your keeping well in these crazy winds 👌🏼⛵️🌊
Happily a lot calmer in the outer marina at Dover today 😅
Another great video Robx well donex
Glad you enjoyed it 🥰
❤
Wow, editing has just rocketed! Great trip
Hi Henry, glad you liked it. Sometimes you just need a little break to recharge the batteries and some new content to get stuck into ⛵️🌊👌🏼. Hope you keeping well and fair winds 🫡
Another great video mate.
@@brianwoody1919 Thanks Brian, glad you liked it and thank you for watching again ! ⛵️👌🏼🌊🫡
Excellent content, am hoping to undertake this trip next year, got final RYA practical in February then will be following your route but from Brightlingsea. Looking forward to next weeks. Well done
@@marcusnorfolk7944 Hi Marcus. Well done for getting training. Make sure you bring plenty of spares and an auxiliary engine just in case. It’s always daunting doing something new. I remember my 1st time crossing the English Channel, don’t underestimate it. It’s an unforgiving place when the weather kicks up which you will see in the next episode. However the feeling of accomplishment after landing in Gravelines was immense. Theres nothing particularly luxurious about Gravelines but you will arrive at your home port like captain jack sparrow with a swagger in your step. The shipping is something you can’t train for. You just need to gun it 90degrees and commit to it. If you wait to give way you will be there all day. 🌊👌🏼⛵️ thanks for watching !
@ what day is the follow up going up?
@ Should be a week or so, I’ll try and get it out quickly but theres quite a lot going on in that episode so I don’t want to rush it. ⛵️👌🏼
@ quiet a few you tubers release 5pm Sunday evening every week.
Just an idea. 4-4.30 Sunday afternoon would be when people are waiting for them so might catch yours before them
@ Exactly why I don’t release vids at that time as you’re competing for viewers. It reached you and that’s all that matters 😉
Most enjoyable video. Btw, when's your wife joining you or do you prefer going solo?
@@albertofourie3294 Hi Alberto, my wife has been off shore once and she was very ill. Got quite lumpy going round North Foreland, she was down stairs praying 😂 while I was up top surviving. The wife and son join me on shorter trips in shore. She will be in a nice trip I did to Maldon a few weeks ago. I do love having them with me on board but I also respect she’s not cut out for the sea and whilst my son loves being on the boat there not much to do at sea. It’s great when they visit me in different places, we save money rather than buying expensive hotels and we have the car and I get to go sailing. It’s a win win for everyone this way 👌🏼⛵️🌊 thanks for watching.
@@EastCoastSailing_ What you described sure made me chuckle! Great to hear your family supports your passion. 👍
Hello May I ask if you are based at Tollesbury as I just bought the sailboat Stream and she is on hard standing at the Marina And as I am new to sailing maybe I can buy you a drink sometime and have a chat about learning to sail anyway thank you as I am finding your posts very helpful
@@waynelucamklagroenterprise6795 Hi Wayne and a warm welcome. yes Evania is at the main Tollesbury marina & my other boat Beluga is at the at Tollesbury Saltings. I’ll be down there New Year’s Day. What boat is Stream and is it by the marina office hard or the carpark hardstanding towards the back? Thanks
@ Hi to answer your question she is a 1988 MG Spring 25 and at the moment she is to the right about Halfway up as you drive into the car park I purchased her on the 12th of December this year I am looking to use her as a kind of holiday home for my family and learn to sail on her before I look at going for a little larger boat
She has had a lot of work done on her already but I need to get her new upholstery get the engine serviced and maybe change out the toilets seacock
@ lovely looking boat, sporty looking with modern lines. You certainly will never have much free time now you have a boat. Always jobs to do! Pack plenty of spares and tools & Make sure you get an outboard as a back up. You will have engine problems at some point ! I’ll see you down there. All the best
No music please
@@MC-nw7cg Roger ⛵️👌🏼
Hello! great video, except for the music...! I personally think your videos stand strong enough on their own with your commentary and (in my opinion) no need for 'plastic' music. but other than that a great video.
@@philkibble3912 Hi Philip, wasn’t much wind to ramsgate and had the engine on a bit, hence a lot of voice over and music. I’ll reduce it in the next one. I said to my wife less narration and she said more… she won😅 ⛵️👌🏼🌊
Others possibly love it, but these videos would be 10x better without the annoying music. There is no better accompaniment than the simple sound of waves and wind. It's a shame as content is good.
@@greggron Hi Greg, had the engine on a bit as there wasn’t any wind, plenty of wind in the next episode and no engine for 30mins 🤤 ⛵️👌🏼🌊🇬🇧🍺
