    I think the tide was actually with you in the Needles channel in order to record those speeds. Also the waves usually get a lot uglier out by the Needles with a strong wind against tide situation.

    • @EastCoastSailing_
      @EastCoastSailing_  3 місяці тому

      @morgste The speed I mentioned 8.2 knots is the through water speed. The maximum speed my boat goes through the water before hitting its displacement speed is around 8 knots. The speed sensor instrument on the left detects how many rpm’s the paddle log speed sensor turns when water passes over it located under the boat. The GPS speed over ground is the important speed to watch which will indicates the tidal state. I was going 5 knots. I had 3.2 knots of tide against me. I was going a lot slower over ground. The tide was definitely against me otherwise I’d be going over 11.2 knots over ground. You can see the high speeds on the out going journey in calm waters.
      Check the tidal streams for this area if you’re unsure. The tide flows out SW past the needles 1 hour before high water Portsmouth. I also have tidal flow indicators on both chart plotters for a quick check but normally a visual check near a buoy will give you a great indication seeing the wake behind.
      Hope this helps. I’m a far better navigator and engineer than I am a sailor. That’s one thing you don’t need to worry about 😉 thanks for watching.

    The smile on your face when you surfed homewards. 🙂
    Any chance your wife will invest time in a sailing course or two? Or crew in a female club racing team? Best way to get your family on board is for here to be confident she can handel the boat.
    Another comment for the algorithm 😊 Take care.🙋‍♂️

      @@EastCoastSailing_ Had a wobble and questioning why I was making the videos. We've been out a good amount, but not really filmed. Chris and I sat having a few beers recently after a failed Round the Island attempt for fun, and found your channel. We're loving it. As I type, am sat trawling through footage from the last race last year, and making a video. Think it is time to play UA-cam content again. Thanks for being awesome 👍

      @@sailingmist I totally get it. It takes a lot of time and effort for little reward. As long as you enjoy it. Did you hit your 4000 view hours? Is that what made you give it up for a bit? I’ll try and organise something with others with a YT. Maybe we could set up a race next year round the island for a bit of content and sharing 😎👌🏼

      @@EastCoastSailing_ I was chasing the hours etc. Which really took the fun out of it. Have met some fun people along the way. Funny feeling you will be one of those should we meet. I had a beer with SailHub and Sailing Cadoha this week. Always good catching up with them. A get together sounds great. A sail sounds amazing. Beer, Boats, Buddies. Bonza!

      @@sailingmist Perfect 👌🏼 I was lucky I had 1 vid that carried me to 4000 hours. It’s literally £2.20 per 1000 views so not worth it 😂 but it’s more the principal of getting rewarded for your efforts. Keep up the good work and just because people don’t comment or subscribe doesn’t mean they don’t watch you 😉

      @@EastCoastSailing_ I always get caught out in that area. I think it is to do with the SW and it being distorted off the land. It has caught me out twice. The first time was a surprise and the second one was to remind me that it is a place where this may happen. Third time has not happened as i have not sailed through there since the 90s.

      @@dulls8475 I have sailed through here 4 times. Always been really pleasant however this return journey was a bit rough. Had confused waves bouncing up. In different directions. That’s why the boat veered starboard a couple of times. I always let the sail out a bit further to ensure I don’t gibe, I really need to get round to rigging up a preventer ⛵️🫡🔥
