The Ecological Approach to Mixed Martial Arts Striking with Scott Sievewright
In this episode of The Sonny Brown Breakdown, guest Scott Sievewright discusses his ecological approach to coaching martial arts. He emphasises the importance of live, unscripted sparring from day one to build skills, arguing that traditional techniques taught in isolation don't effectively transfer to real-life fighting.
Sievewright believes his method produces better, more skilled fighters by developing movement repertoire and qualities through live, games-based play sparring. He highlights sparring's role in correcting errors and the importance of adaptability and self-organisation in training.
The conversation covers footwork, external focus, situational sparring, distance and space in fighting, brain health, and transitioning from gym to amateur fighting.
Sievewright also discusses prioritising athlete health and safety, challenging headgear use in training, and emphasising the need for fighters to handle pressure and compete before amateur fights. He stresses individuality in training and continuous experimentation and adaptation in an ecological approach to coaching martial arts.

Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Zen & Taoism By Alan Watts
What a matchup it would’ve been had they both been in their primes. Both men were physical specimens. It’s laughable and sad that Jeffries even took this fight.
Terrible striking
五味は今も闘っている。健在だよ。
Where's Jesse Enkamp now??? Why is silent???? He has nothing to say now.
Fascinating conversation thank you so much for having this.
5:12 "Hits the man a couple of time to soft(en) him up." Sounds almost like a recipe, right before adding salt and pepper.
When jiujitsu meant something other than cauliflower ears and belt colors😕
Brazilians say that they had valetu do contest back in 60s
Where are bruce lee fans saying that he was a best fighter or martial artist at this time...) Before 1973?...))))))
Why would you ever wait on a grappler. I would never agree to a ring enclosure either. Without unlimited space it’s going to end in a clinch. It is inevitable. With limited rules it will always favor a grappler. And to be honest they actually went lightly on these karate guys. They could have done some real damage. Just another classical mess exposed. They had every opportunity to strike but they were apprehensive. That’s why I laugh at all that blocking nonsense. They didn’t even know how to avoid a basic takedown. No knees, elbows, head butts ect. Just a fancy stance and tapping out. Better off taking some boxing 🥊. At least it’s practical and you will build strength and endurance.
its actually a good thing that karate has a reputation now of being shit, i prefer a smaller, more intimate club lol
Send in the Kyokushin dawgz.
They still suck on ground fighting. Send in the sambo guys
A fight is like a story. Punching & kicking is part of the story. Unfortunately for Karate guys, the Grappling guys know how to quickly take you into a part of the story where they are the masters and where you have no clue what's going on: the ground!
That one guy was not 40lbs heavier
No doubt the Gracie team would dominate. What a joke the black belts were. I know this is 50 years ago but not one low kick by the karate team%
No diference beteeen them. All are trying to put the other one to the floor. No anything specific to a style.
VIVA RONALDO CARLOS DA SILVA, ALUNO DO TANAKA E FILHO DO MESTRE HUGO MELO!!!
Its all about self defense...not good to fight against one style vs another... There are really good bjj fighters and really good Karateka today....both very strong
Wow Rorion 👏👏Relson👏👏Rolls👏👏
Ni un karateka valio pa pura vrg no traian nada de striking
This knowledge was necessary to grow. These men were very gracious in victory and commentating was respectful. I love that the Gracies shared this with the world and evolved self defense to.where we are now. The utmost respect to the pioneers of modern mma.
This was cool to watch and listen to
Thank you this is amazing. It's interesting to see what old jiujitsu techniques made it to Europe.
Esses nao sabem nada de karatê, desafiassem os verdadeiros mestres em Okinawa.
Sure Daniel san
still today nobody knows the karateka's names
DREAM FIGHT MMA rules Gi optional KIMURA 🇯🇵 VS Danny Hodge 🇺🇸
600 ?? 1000 ??? 😳😳😳
at 1:43 notice how because he was "caught" the karate fighter went from a yang to a completely yin mindset. there was plenty of space to strike until he was fully on the ground but again his own mental state caused his own defeat to a large extent. hey, does anyone know if that was rorion gracie in that episode of "threes company" where he played a very small role as one of the numerous cousins of filipe'? i once read that rorion was the richest guy in mma except for dana and i always wondered if much of that was from the gracie video company. anyone?
But they would not challenge Os Malandros Capoeira. Gracie jujitsu sucks and they know it!!
A white belt jitsu guy could beat the best standup fighters in the world. NO CONTEST!!
HAHAHHA! Are you 13 or something?
@@cylyntknyt More like 6 years old

What kind of karate was this, real karate also has grappling, real karate comes from war and real life and death combat, these kids came from some well selected high school karate club with no clue of real scrapping, just look at the owner of the karate school- that wild haymaker punch doesn't look like a trained karate attack- pitiful
Ok then. Where are the videos of those real karatekas vs bjj? Lyoto Machida and other "mma karatekas" do not count as they have plenty of BJJ, wrestling and boxing training mixed in his fighting style.
the karate guys know how to grapple now beware.
Not a single guard pull, berimbolo, or butt scoot to be seen. Old school BJJ wasn’t as “advanced”, but at least they trained to actually defend themselves. Most modern schools are all about the sport aspect and competition. It’s sad.
Really living up to your username aren't you? 😂😂😂

As a BJJ guy, I always marvel at how easily non-BJJ fighters give the arm, the back, and the neck.
Traditional karate has managed to survive over 30 years after UFC 1. It’s really quite amazing. 😆
Same with aikido, taichi and winchun. Nowadays you dont need the martial art to be functional; you just need to look good on camera and there is plenty of gullible people willing to give money to be instructed.

The real seeds for MMA!
BJJ didn’t need good takedowns back then, clinch and trip was good enough. Clearly, no wrestlers on the karate team.
they're not karate guys, same thing with that so called 6 time Russian judo champion ... no mention of name whatsoever, nobody recognizes him, didn't wear pants or even a belt for that matter, zero judo skill and zero boxing skill were shown ... no mention on the internet anywhere of anyone in Russia having won a judo title more than twice ... much less 6 times ... you know they paid a homeless guy unfront, labeled him "judo champ" and simply relied on the ignorance and sheer stupidity of the gullible masses and since fact checking due to lack of internet back then was pretty much impossible, it worked ... the Gracie clan, the most notorious scam artists in all of martial arts history
When I was 10 years old, being the childish brat that I used to be back then, I trolled a few of my friends and played air hockey against them ... I knew beforehand they didn't even know what it was and therefore never played it before (I played it pretty much my entire life up until that point) ... I of course beat them effortlessly ... I then told them, YA SEE? YA SEE? THIS IS WHY AIR HOCKEY IS THE BEST GAME OUT THERE!!! ... how is THIS any different lol
Why didn't karate guys beat them with strikes? It's their área of expertise.
@@rhinobridge please, those weren't karateka, the same way that supposed 6 time Russian judo champ was no judoka, this has already been long since debunked
That is exactly why in the first ufc the Gracie’s did not want any ANY competitors with wrestling or knowledge of takedown defense. Look up bill superfoot Wallace interview he tells all about it and then was not invited to host the second ufc because he asked too many questions lol!!
yes, they're scam artists and martial frauds, it's like Michael Jordan forcing people who never played basketball to play basketball against him and then of course dominate and confirmation bias response: basketball is the best sport there is ... that's pretty much Gracie 101 logic
Errm, Ken Shamrock?
You mean like Ken Shamrock in UFC 1? Who wrestled in high school and was a grappler in Japan? Wallace had no clue what he was looking at as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was foreign to him. That's why he wasn't asked back. In addition, Royce also fought Dan Severn in UFC 4. Severn was a 250 lb NCAA All American and an Olympic alternate for wrestling. But yea, the Gracie's didn't want to fight anyone with a wrestling background.
@@user-cd6kn9pf5f yes, what other Ken Shamrock is there lol
@@SINdaBlock411That's called being sarcastic. So, the poster either lied, or is clueless because Shamrock was a wrestler. If the Gracie's didn't want anyone with a wrestling background they wouldn't have picked Shamrock for the tournament. LOL
is this karate? when opponent come to close he didn't do anything? accurate front kick enough to knock down jujitsu guy.
should've invited Cobra Kai: man can't stand, he can't fight, FIRST RULE OF THE QUICKSILVER METHOD
