  • Kimura wrestled Rikidozan in a professional wrestling match on the 22nd of December 1954 for the Japanese Heavyweight Championship, which would be contested for the first and only time. It started as a typical professional wrestling contest, but then it unexpectedly turned into a shoot with Rikidozan genuinely attacking Kimura and knocking him out.

You have to read Kimura’s My Judo, his autobiography. This is a scripted match and at the end Rikidozan’s strikes were real. Kimura was dazed and eventually got KO’d. Yakuza members did not like what happened though per Kimura, he advised no retaliation will be made. RIP to both Legends.

Riki was notorious for being a shooter. Often times his matches goes off the script.

You can see the moment Riki started to make it a real fight and the shock from Kimura, he even had a legit single leg until the ref broke it up, then you see more shock from Kimura as Riki starts striking again

Two major things I noticed having finally watched this match. 1. Kimura’s body language through out the entire match is limp and basically like he’d rather be anywhere else than that ring. 2. Towards the end Kimura kicks Rikidozan right in the groin and it’s exactly after that Riki starts shooting. Not defending Rikidozan here but after hearing about this double cross for years I’m not even sure Rikidozan planned it. From his body language you can tell he’s obviously frustrated during the entire match and the kick to the groin set him off. Still insane how this match and finish was the building blocks to professional wrestling in Japan.

When Kimura tries to defend himself against Riki, shooting at him and trying to hook his leg to attempt a takedown, the referee stops it and put them apart, so Riki starts slapping Kimura even when he's trying to talk to the referee, maybe to complain about the beating Seems referee was tryina f*ck Kimura, since it was suposed to be a scripted wwe style "fight".

it's great to see this cleaned up and colorized. it looks like a match from the mid-60s with the changes, better.
to me, it looks like riki has a front necklock that was a little too tight for kimura's comfort which kimura wriggled from, riki taking a lock on his left arm. it cuts but and the next time the action picks up, riki is trying to grab for his neck with kimura kicking him. riki strikes back and is trying to down him from there. supposedly this was supposed to end as a draw, but it's hard for me to imagine riki taking a drawn match for the japanese title with anyone, kimura or otherwise. i think his plan all along was to get kimura to trust him, then shoot on him to cement (no pun intended) his drawing power and image

I think rikidozan gets too much heat for this he’s vilify in itagaki(creator of Baki) work for this and respect to kimura but he should of been ready for combat the moment it became a shoot , and rikidozan no slouch he was sumo wrestler before becoming a pro wrestler so it would of been hard for kimura to use his judo on Riki

As much as Kimura should have been ready for a shoot, consider he most likely got concussed with the first few sucker punches. He immediately clinched with Riki successfully, but due to rope break has to let go. In a real fight or MMA without rope breaks he most likely could have gathered himself there. Then, while he's talking to the ref trying to figure out whats going on, he eats a few more sucker punches. Keep in mind Riki is MUCH bigger than Kimura. The strongest hit is the one you don't see coming, and deception can defeat even the toughest fighter. Remember Charlie Bennet knocked out Wanderlei Silva with a sucker punch.

Rikidozan had about 40lbs on Kimura. Kimura was also in his late 30's, well past his prime. Judo is a harsh sport and leaves you with a lot of injuries. You can see Rikidozan was being uncooperative. Kimura went for a seoi nage at 9:19 and Rikidozan blocked it.

Kimura just doesn't have any striking background. No kick boxing, no muay thai, no boxing, no mma. He would have won if he had any of those martial arts. His judo doesn't work against heavier opponents.
He went back his basic single leg attack. American Wrestling beats all types of grappling arts. Add BJJ to wrestling and he will be unstoppable.
Wrestling (foundation) > BJJ > Striking (Icing in the cake)

MMA did not exist in 1954. It was supposed to be scripted pro wrestling match that was planned to be a draw but it turned into real fight after Kimura kicked Rikidozan’s groin by accident (probably). That’s when Rikidozan lost his temper and started to beat Kimura up for real. It’s like kids who at first just play around until one of them gets hit hard by accident and start to fight for real.
