  • The Shooting demonstrated the Japanese Shooto style from Satoru Sayama that was developed in the 1980s. Shooto contained all elements of martial arts by combining striking, throws and submissions, which gave it an appearance similar to modern MMA.

I love how early UFC events had untrained taxi drivers fighting when years earlier in Japan they were already fighting like amateur modern MMA fighters

All the fighters at UFC 1 were legit. The following events, are when the taxi drivers started to show up.

Guys like Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Gerard Gordeau and Pat Smith definitely weren't untrained taxi drivers, their styles just weren't mixed like these guys at the time.

I'd even go as far to say that Shooto looks very close to pro MMA fighters. The Gracie family likes to trash talk the Shooto scene and other shoot-style fighters, but Shooto is about as legit as it gets.

Did Shooto, catch and BJJ with Erik Paulson in the early 90s. They had a Shooto tournament at the Inosanto academy and they made everyone where those face sheilds too. Must have been Yuri who wanted that. I could never figure that one out. Very cumbersome. Regular headgear would have been fine.

Where did Sayama learn subs off his back that he was training the fighters? I thought Catch Wrestling did little off their back and even Karl Gotch didn't believe in being on your back at all.

      I know he trained with:
      Karl Gotch
      Antonio Inoki
      Yoshiaki Fujiwara
      Kotetsu Yamamoto
A very solid group of Martial Artists. (Both Western&Eastern)

But kazushi sakuraba who was a pro wrestler who also wrestled at NJPW New Japan Pro Wrestling beat the Gracie's when no one else could which actually was bigger than the UFC title. Also to be fair there would not be a UFC without the original satoru tiger mask sayama Sammy Lee this is fact, who I think is the greatest professional wrestler that ever lived. Also everyone in UFC does the Shooto style he created in 1985 and also was the name of the company. Dickson Gracie in the 1980's was saying that what satoru sayama was doing no one elsecwas doing anywhere in the world. Also remember UFC is not the only MMA company in the world. Shooto is MMA, but more accurately MMA is Shooto.

      shooto
had absolutely no influence on the UFC,that was entirely due to rorion Gracie and nothing else,it wasnt even bjj it was his entrepenuership that started it all. Also sayama may have been a great fake wrestler but he was useless at shooto and never even had a real match himself self

@@scarred10 first of all I actually have the the book introduction to shooting from 1986 it is a very comprehensive book. You say he never influenced UFC of course he did because the octagon ring came from the idea of shooting as there is a picture if it in his book mentioned above. Like I said before Rickson Gracie new he he was. You say sayama was not great at shooto yes he was I have seen some of his shooto fights. Are you aware of who just one of his trainers was. One of them was Karl Gotch legendary pro wrestler how many real pro wrestling matches did you see karl gotch have? But yet when masahiko Kimura became a pro wrestler and came to England to learn some more pro wrestling he met karl gotch and gotch taught him a pro wrestling hold correctly known as the double wristlock or the chicken wing. This is the same hold he beat helio Gracie with but incorrectly called the Kimura. Also BJJ has pro wrestling in it style remember mitsuyo maeda became a professional wrestler as well and taught them kano jiu jitsu with pro wrestling techniques. BJJ would never exist without kano jiu jitsu and pro wrestling. Also if you learn about the student that came out of super tiger gym and then who those students trained and how some of them became legends in UFC you will realise your statement is silly. No matter what you think it is an actual fact he invented Shooto or MMA he used the phrase MMA in his 1986 book. Yorinaga nakamura was one of satoru sayamas top students research and check him out.
