  • I talk to Luke Martin, a Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt who runs Sydney West Martial Arts. He recently switched his academy from a mix of gi and no-gi training to only no-gi for adults. We discuss how he feels the culture of no-gi jiu-jitsu is progressing and John Danaher’s influence on the sport and himself. We also discuss how he views the impact of external vs internal effects on the grappling culture.

I just listened to this and I have thoughts on wrestling shoes. The parallel to the gi is not approriate. Wrestling shoes to a grappling are like 16 oz boxing gloves to an mma fighter. I grew up wrestlubg and thus have taken 1000s of shots with wrestling shoes. When I practice shots in bjj, I'm not as interested because it's just not as comfortable on my feet, you get a lot of mat burn on your toes. Fact is, you will take a lot more shots in a given wrestling practice if you are wearing shoes versus if you are not.

I like your thinking- and it’s not just annoying mat burn. Due to toe injuries I’m sometimes forced to put on my shoes if I want to continue training while also letting the injury heal.
