Excellent and solid advice! Last night I got unexpectedly upset before a performance which threatened to destroy my concentration. Deep breathing and some gentle physical movements helped me relax and then I thought about the audience. I ended up giving my best performance!

Good morning, I am so happy to view your ideas, methods and numerous ways in which to get better at playing music. You have given in sight into why certain things we've been told does not work. I often wonder why I don't seem to improve, you have unveiled those reasons thank you. I would love to learn more and support your channel, tell me how I can become a part of your community, again thanks, Edward Henderson

Juggling really helped slow things down. It is also impossible to be sad when you juggle. Also made me realise why studying math is so hard. It's not repetitive enough. I have to make my own repetitions.

Great advise. You have to be true to yourself and not try and do something just because a teacher pushes you into it. I'm a singer, and all teachers I've been to try and push you into opera because it's seen as the highest form of singing, even though for most people it is not suitable. I've wasted years trying to sing arias that I will never be able to sing and getting very frustrated in the process. Most teachers just want the money. Beware!

What if you hate what you know you really need to do the most to improve your music. For me this is counting and working with a metronome. My nemesis. Lol. But, heavy sigh, I shall forge on!

All to right. We play and do our own thing; in a group (what ever it consists of) or on your own, as I do on an organ but often we fail to hear or imagine what the listeners are hearing. John R. ALCM

Yes, it is important to be connected to the music. I wonder if it is easier to do the more familiar you are with a piece.

Great reminder, especially important in smaller combos (trios, quartets with vocalists/soloists). Hard to do in a Big Band!

this is so true and easier said than done for people struggling with their instrument or the music they are trying to play. Even without struggle there are people who do just their thing, but being able to interact with band members through true listening is so much more interesting also for the audience.

Hey Mark! I'm enrolled in "unlock your performance" and going slowly through at a pace I can apply all the wonderful insights, tips and challenges in accordance with my personal time available. I wanted to add a small but perhaps helpful tid bit about simulating performance context. When I'm ready to "performance practice" (and have done this in the past, nice to have a name to it) I open my windows to give me the feeling that others are listening like an audience. It really helps me work on any nervousness and also push me to not stop but keep playing through the song or set. I imagine they are smiling and singing or dancing along. Imagination is a wonderful tool, you think? I'm heading over to your recording yourself video now. Blessings! RockerEl

Yup. I love this. I've talked occasionally in the past about how (when I lived on the ground floor in front of a relatively busy street) I would practice in the front window facing out. Just to get used to the idea that people could definitely see me.

Wow! Before learning about this study, I read that practicing in one's mind causes the same changes in the brain as actually practicing. When we practice, we're causing changes in the cerebellum, obviously, the muscle memory part of the brain. How on earth does this happen without moving the muscles of the hands?

I'm 40 now and I found out a couple of years ago that 'Aphantasia' is a thing and I have it.. I have no minds eye and can't imagine my instruments while I'm not holding it. I constantly wonder how it has affected the way that I learn and remember things. I've never gotten better at art, despite studying it for years at school. I definitely can't remember pages of musical notes, although I taught myself to sight read through INTENSE practice. I have no spacial awareness and I get lost in places I've been to before because I have no internal 'map'. I definitely learn by muscle memory when it comes to piano. But guitar I definitely imagine the note and then my fingers move there by themselves almost. It's like pre-free will. It's automatic before I'm even aware of it.
