I’ve had to actually train myself to get into the habit of practicing. So, when I first started my guitar journey, I would pick it up & get something in, even if I was not focused. I even kept my guitar at the side of my bed so I could grab it & practice as soon as I wake up, B4 I got too busy. I had to train myself to get in the habit of picking up the guitar. Haha. It actually worked for the sake of getting into the habit of practicing consistently . But it took me much longer than normal, I believe, to actually play with less mistakes, because I wasn’t focused. For me, it had to be more about the mechanics of picking up the guitar & playing it. Now that I’ve finally developed the discipline, strength & endurance to practice consistently, I find it much easier to get into it & focus. I still keep “Funky Joe” beside my bed, though. My personal journey. ❤️😊

I’ve noticed this with myself in my practice several times. Sometimes I can get through a practice session and feel pretty good about it and the next time, part way through the session I notice, as an example, that I’m making old mistakes that I’ve overcome. When this happens, I’ll stop and go over it again a few more times. If it’s a blunder, carry on but often I’ll keep making the same mistake and no matter how hard I try I can’t correct it. I’ve learned to just stop. My brain has had enough. Time to carry on. If this happens on a song I’m learning and I’m trying to learn a difficult passage that I’ve been working on for days or longer, sometimes it helps if I leave it alone for a few days and practice something else. It’s amazing how much easier that passage is to play through when you come back to it after a few days break.

Hi! What if you lack focus to start with?

Well, everyone's capable of applying *some* focus... But focus is also something that you can deliberately train. You can work on your mental skills just as much as on your physical ones (although it's usually a less familiar thing for most people to do)

Great video, Mark, with the little clips of the guitar and ‘relax’ stones… my focus on the video is better this way…. 😊
