    _All my life, I played around with instruments, in private, just for my own enjoyment. My goal now, at Age 77, is to feel competent enough to play with other musicians (professionals who are far more advanced and experienced than I)._
    *I learned two principles at the park this week:*
    *(1) Be spontaneous. Don’t overthink an opportunity. Just do it!*
    The playground at the park has professional quality outdoor instruments for the kids. I noticed a father (a total stranger to me) playing polyrhythms on the hand drums. Without taking time to think, I said, “If you play some rhythm, I will play some grand marimba.” It came off perfectly. We did a fist-bump and I continued on my walk.
    There was a real down-side to its coming off perfectly like that. That was too high of a bar, and my mind would not risk my attempting it again and failing.
    *(2) Don’t be attached to yesterday’s performance. Have no expectations. Today’s experience will be different.*
    In the park today, I carried a different register saxoflute than I was used to, with a different set-up, and a more challenging reed. “What if it started playing squeaks?” my mind cautioned. But I sat on a bench and played it anyway. Who cares? I just felt like playing. By the time I was done, I got kudos from strangers who joined me on the bench. Did I just luck out? Or was it because of my lack of attachment to the outcome?

    Thank you, Mark. That was very useful and helpful. Leaves out a lot of frustration from not being able to play everything. Love, Lluís

      Glad it was helpful, Lluís. Be aware that it probably won't remove ALL the frustration. I still wish I could play *everything* - even after years of working with this insight - but the feeling of frustration is much less than it used to be (and I get the joy of the fast progress that I make in the areas I DO focus on as a consolation)

      @@PlayInTheZone Mark, the simple truth is that "to play everything" one needs to have talent, not funds for expensive youtube adverts.

    This helps a lot, thank you so much. I was practicing Boogie Woogie just because I thought it is kind of a prerequisite for jazz, but I don‘t really like it, and this can never be the goal where I ultimately want to go. The end result was that I overused my left pinkie and now have to deal with an arthrosis and don‘t know how to cure it. Had I followed my path, it woudn‘t have happened.

      Glad it helped. It's definitely worth questioning whether the "obvious" things to work on are actually necessary for you to get where you want to go to. (But also be open to advice from experienced players and teachers. Sometimes things that don't seem directly related are actually important foundations for the stuff that you ARE interested in)

    Great advise. You have to be true to yourself and not try and do something just because a teacher pushes you into it. I'm a singer, and all teachers I've been to try and push you into opera because it's seen as the highest form of singing, even though for most people it is not suitable. I've wasted years trying to sing arias that I will never be able to sing and getting very frustrated in the process. Most teachers just want the money. Beware!

    Target setting and choosing a direct pathway with no off-road distractions and detours (and there are many)!

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 роки тому

      Yup! You'll still have to find your ideal route - and this will probably involve some dead ends or detours from time to time. But it's way more direct than if you have no idea where you're headed.

    What if you hate what you know you really need to do the most to improve your music. For me this is counting and working with a metronome. My nemesis. Lol. But, heavy sigh, I shall forge on!

    I agree - you need an Artistic Vision - in that sort of capital sense.

    Does it matter if the current goal is a big step on the path or a small step? I'm not very accomplished, and my goals are usually picking a piece to learn and a date about a month or so in the future when I want to know it. Anything much farther in the future may turn out to be unrealistic or not sufficiently specific to inspire practice with specific goals. Any disagreement with this?

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 роки тому

      I think you definitely want an idea of where you're heading a long way down the path. It doesn't have to be very specific and you don't have to know exactly how you're going to get there - but it does want to provide a general direction that you're heading in. That way all the small-step specific goals that you work on (and you definitely want these at all times) will line up and build on each other rather than potentially pulling in all sorts of different directions.

    The best musicians have 1 thing, and 1 thing only.Talent.Everything else is a waste of time, and does not help at all, or make any difference.Talent is all that matters.

      Absolutely right. Spot on. And even with the best inborn fascilities and total dedication to music, it is still a very hard path and lots of tears sometimes, the childhood being devoted to music at the expense of some simple pleasuers.

      This is so obviously false that you don’t even believe that yourself. But it’s very convenient to think that, if you know what I mean.
      Dedication always beats talent. Any sensible person knows that.
      Only dedication + talent beats dedication.
      Go ask any great musician how much dedication thay have put into their practice.
      There’s plenty of talented people working at places like McDonalds.

      Even super-talent Mozart did say - they do not know how much I practice. So it’s not only talent of course. As a teacher I have often seen very talented but lazy people in course of time getting behind compared to somewhat less talented pupils who were more committed.
