Seattle Sights by Bike: A Lake Union Loop Adventure (with a Surprise!)
Seattle Sights by Bike: A Lake Union Loop Adventure (with a Surprise!)
While my new prosthetic socket is getting built, two wheels are better than two feet! Join me for a scenic bike ride around Seattle's crown jewel, Lake Union.
Our adventure starts (and ends) at the iconic Gasworks Park, with its stunning city views and a finale you won't see coming (hint: think unexpected delight, not unexpected disaster). From there, we'll cruise south along the western shore, with some commentary on recent architectural designs.
Next, we'll switch gears and head north on the eastern side, where a peek-a-boo view awaits. Keep your eyes peeled for the quirky charm of Seattle's houseboats! Finally, we'll loop back around and return to Gasworks Park, feeling refreshed and ready for more exploring (on two wheels or two feet, depending on when that awesome new socket arrives).
This easy-going loop is perfect for cyclists of all levels, offering stunning scenery, and hidden gems, along with some interesting historical tidbits. So, pack your water bottle, hop on your bike, and get ready for a fun-filled Seattle adventure! Thanks for watching!

Great idea!
Been here many times....
"I look like a dork but i stopped caring about that decades ago." I love that. I just ordered one and im so excited! Thank you for making this video!
Glad I could help. :)
Thank you. Good review. 😊
Nice bike tour. Wishing you a wonderful day, and good luck with tomorrows celebrations. Take care 🙂
Thank you very much!
Great video. I do have one objection, however. 11:00 being on a bicycle is ALWAYS better than being in a car 😁
I respectively have to disagree. On a nice day, easy path and no traffic, I love zipping by cars stuck in traffic. :)
Down by gasworks park is a little place called Voula's Offshore Cafe that has some amazing breakfast. I haven't been there in a while though. I've been enjoying the biking videos. Thanks for sharing brother
Someone could do a whole video series on reviewing cafes, bars and restaurants on that loop around Lake Union. :) Feel free to take that as an inspiration for your next video series. :)
Honestly.. I rarely go into Seattle these days
Man. The medical system is cruel. I liked your ride, though. Good on you for getting out and I liked the way you filmed it. Some cool angles. Liked what you did! It's fun to experiment. I always get inspiration from the other creators that I watch for new angles, etc of filming. Watched the ⚫️ til the end... 🎶 😊
Thanks. I stopped a lot and spent time just messing around with the camera, gripper tripod and extension stick. The ride took a longer but I was out to have fun and was in no hurry. :)
I loved the area. Lived on the lake for years. Now I am bilateral below knee. I also are having fun trying to get ankles. I have solid ankles that wouldn't flex on a bike. Are there any trick to make bike pedals that would work?
I have the Ossur Cheetah Xplorer and the ankle is locked. It does have some flex when I'm walking but biking it's locked.
Nice video, lovely bike ride. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you a fantastic day 😊
Thanks, I'll have another bike ride published sometime next week.
I thought the way you filmed the video was great brother. Really sucks about our medical system.. bunch of crooks. Thanks for the video
Thanks! I'm not into biking fast and hard, so by taking time to re-arrange the camera location on my bike I got to relax and enjoy the locations more. I've had good insurance and crap insurance over the years. This one is in the crap category. :(
Hey... it's not a race
I tried that trick with the stick and it didn't work. Thanks for the video brother
Didn't work? You dunk the stick in the alcohol and light it, then put the lit stick into the alcohol. What didn't work? Did the stick not light or did the alcohol not light?
Stove didn't light
That's strange. Well, a match will do just as well.
I'll try it again next time.
Love this!
Love this! Is this your channel? Is that you?
Yes and yes. 😀
@@amputeeoutdoors love it!
A wet trip! Not the best conditions to be out in! You made the best out of it.
I operate on the policy that any day spent camping in the woods, regardless of the weather, is a good day. 😃
nice hike and video ... that rainfly is the bomb
Absolutely! Having a big rainfly is the difference between huddling and relaxing in the rain.
Annette Lake was my first backpacking trip last year! I enjoyed the video!
Thanks! I hope you are able to enjoy more backpacking trips in the Cascades.
@@amputeeoutdoors absolutely! I'm going to backpack as much as possible this summer!
Cold Rainer beer in the rain. It doesn't get any more PNW then that!
How do you tell people you're a Washingtonian without saying you're a Washingtonian? Drink Rainier in the rain while camping in June. 😂
Absolutely stunning! The way this video showcases the beauty of hiking destinations is just incredible. Hats off to you. I'm wearing a prosthesis myself and I know what kind of challenge nature can be ;)
Glad you enjoyed it! A good prosthetic, regular exercise, hiking poles and planning overcomes many challenges. :)
Nice wild camp at Annette Lake. Thank you for sharing. nice set up. Have a fantastic week.-
Thanks, you too! My set up has been refined thanks to many incremental mistakes. 😀
Hi! Can you do a video on getting your leg on and getting out of the hammock. I'm also an amputee and getting out of mine can be a challenge sometimes!
Sure thing!
Nice.. I started to hike that but turned around and headed back down. I should have pushed on. Looks like a nice area. Thanks for the video brother
Any time! When the weather is nicer this is one of the most attractive lakes around. :)
You picked a good time to go since I expect that trail to be crowded in nice summer weather.
@@DeanCutletYeah, I've done this trail on a sunny day in the summer and it's hard to find a good spot to even have lunch when you reach the lake.
An old septic?
Unlikely. There were no homes in this area, there used to be a railroad line that went through the pass nearby, and septic covers are round.
Beautiful Blue Sky 👍🏻
Просто верхний клапан (маленький зонтик) над отверстием нужно выгнуть вверх, вот ветер и не будет мешать.
Thanks! I'll try that.
Is this in Washington?
Yes. Annette Lake trail.
you sound like darth vader....
Thanks. 😀
Looks like an avalanche path
In the winter time it is. There's a few signs to that effect.
That looks like colonial Bob area
It's on the trail to Annette Lake in the Cascades. :)
That's paradise up there, some brutal uphill trails tho, Whew. ❤❤❤
I am now. Just 16 days ago. Been on this path for a while and finally had my surgery. I don’t yet have my foot yet. Hiking is a primary requirement. I’ll let you know what I start using. I have an osseointegration and have second stage surgery in early September. I will be able to ditch the socket then. Your channel has been very helpful to me as I journeyed toward my surgery. Thank you.
You're very welcome. I hope in the future you create videos of your own and post them for others to learn from. :)
Good job with this. I don't tend to hike or backpack with others but every time I've handed someone sticks, who hasn't used them, they put their hands in wrong. I think when we see straps the thinking is that they're security so you don't drop them. What I tell people is to guide the sticks with your hand. You don't need to grab them tightly unless you're climbing and digging in. Otherwise let the straps bare the weight. Only other tip is to never put your full weight on a stick going downhill. They're only to control speed and sticks can snap or slip. And an occasional clicking them together in bear territory is all you need as far as noise to make yourself known.
I forgot to mention the knocking the poles together. I do that too after seeing someone else do it. :)
I find that using both arms together works better for me sometimes on steep uphill trails because my upper body strength is not amazing. It also can be mentally easier sometimes if you are tired or not super coordinated because you don't have to think quite as much on where to put all 4 "legs"
Yeah, on those longer hikes towards the end of the day when you're starting to tire out, having four points of contact with the ground makes a huge difference.
Good information! They come in so handy to help keep your balance, and they take so much pressure off your knees, especially when climbing or descending hills. Great info!
Thanks DC. As others have mentioned, keeping balance, especially on slick or sloped trails, is a major reason they use poles. :)
In the eastern US... clear away spider webs 🕸 I also use them to check mud depth, and slick surfaces in creeks (my tips have boots on them)
Spiderwebs, I hadn't thought of that!
I've saved myself a few times from falling because of trekking poles. They're also helpful for pushing myself up hills as well. Thanks for the video brother
Absolutely! Trekking poles are crucial on many trails to prevent falls.
Fantastic work man, this looks and sounds amazing! So nicely explained 👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice PSA. I am seeing some weird spots in the video, like at 3:20 where the video goes green and stays that way for ~10 seconds
Yeah, I filmed in HDR 10+ and although it didn't show up when I was creating the video, it does in the upload version. I think it's because of the HDR 10+ as I've never had that happen before.
@@amputeeoutdoors very annoying but good to know.
I started using them several years ago and wondered why I had not been using them all along. The energy savings along with the extra stability is a game changer. On really steep terrain they may require adjusting from your normal level trail height. Shorter uphill and longer downhill. This can mean that an uphill side is a little shorter than the downhill side when a trail cuts along a steep slope. I use them to tap logs or rocks before I step over in case a snake is hanging out.
Good point, many folks do adjust the pole height based on the uphill or downhill angle. Snakes! Something I hadn't thought of as we've none in western Washington to worry about. Thanks for that tip!
@@amputeeoutdoors I’m was living in Florida and now Virginia. Snakes are everywhere. I try to hike when in Colorado and have seen rattlesnakes on the trails there too. Trekking poles are seen too often as a crutch when they really are an enhancement. Glad I was accustomed to them before my amputation.
Hey, you're an amputee too? What kind of leg to you use? I have a pin lock socket with an Ossur Cheetah Xplorer laminated to it. Lots of spring to get up hills and super lightweight.
Nice explanation of the importance of hiking poles. Wishing you a lovely day, take care 👍
Thank you! You too!
I have always liked the idea of using it for protection if needed.
Yeah, it's one of those, "I hope I never have too, but if I do..." situations.
Really helpful!
I'm glad you think so Josh. 😀
Nice review of the trails. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you have a great upcoming weekend.
Thanks, you too!
Nice video mate, thankyou
Glad you enjoyed it!
There's a problem with the measurements.....you didn't account for the slack due to all those knots of the ridge line tightening under your weight, and so, the ridge line got extended, not stretched. You should try again but with the line without knots. That's what I think.
Good point. Thanks!
You should go check out the old growth tree that recently fell this January on the trail to Weeks Falls near North Bend. It was a sad but amazing site to see! Seems this tree was filmed as part of the TV show Twin Peaks. I did a video on it myself, worth the trip for sure.
Another destination added to the list! Thanks Camping Matt.
I am looking into buying one, I am quite short though, do you know on hand how long the frame is?
Width 12 inches, height 21 inches. If you van get one do it if for no other reason than to have a piece of history.
Dude, you rock! Thanks for the review.
Thanks! 😎
After a rain hike…, I would have stayed in that lunch stop for days.
Well, there were some good hammocking trees nearby....
Nice exploring in the woods. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching. 🌲
Thanks for the tour. Greetings from Belgium! We had lots of fun.
My pleasure! I'm sorry the weather didn't allow for better views, but hopefully you'll have good weather during the test of your journeys.
