  • In this video I'm using my favourite shock-absorbing hiking poles, the Aihoye Trekking Poles which you get from Amazon here:
    amzn.to/3X1j5Gm
    They're lightweight, have endured considerable abuse and, have built-in shock-absorbing springs. Shock absorbing makes a lot of difference going downhill!

    I have always liked the idea of using it for protection if needed.

      Yeah, it's one of those, "I hope I never have too, but if I do..." situations.

    In the eastern US... clear away spider webs 🕸
    I also use them to check mud depth, and slick surfaces in creeks (my tips have boots on them)

    I've saved myself a few times from falling because of trekking poles. They're also helpful for pushing myself up hills as well. Thanks for the video brother

      Absolutely! Trekking poles are crucial on many trails to prevent falls.

    I am now. Just 16 days ago. Been on this path for a while and finally had my surgery. I don’t yet have my foot yet. Hiking is a primary requirement. I’ll let you know what I start using. I have an osseointegration and have second stage surgery in early September. I will be able to ditch the socket then. Your channel has been very helpful to me as I journeyed toward my surgery. Thank you.

    Good job with this. I don't tend to hike or backpack with others but every time I've handed someone sticks, who hasn't used them, they put their hands in wrong. I think when we see straps the thinking is that they're security so you don't drop them. What I tell people is to guide the sticks with your hand. You don't need to grab them tightly unless you're climbing and digging in. Otherwise let the straps bare the weight. Only other tip is to never put your full weight on a stick going downhill. They're only to control speed and sticks can snap or slip. And an occasional clicking them together in bear territory is all you need as far as noise to make yourself known.

      I forgot to mention the knocking the poles together. I do that too after seeing someone else do it. :)

    Good information! They come in so handy to help keep your balance, and they take so much pressure off your knees, especially when climbing or descending hills. Great info!

    • @amputeeoutdoors
      @amputeeoutdoors  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks DC. As others have mentioned, keeping balance, especially on slick or sloped trails, is a major reason they use poles. :)

    I started using them several years ago and wondered why I had not been using them all along. The energy savings along with the extra stability is a game changer.
    On really steep terrain they may require adjusting from your normal level trail height. Shorter uphill and longer downhill. This can mean that an uphill side is a little shorter than the downhill side when a trail cuts along a steep slope.
    I use them to tap logs or rocks before I step over in case a snake is hanging out.

    • @amputeeoutdoors
      @amputeeoutdoors  Місяць тому

      Good point, many folks do adjust the pole height based on the uphill or downhill angle. Snakes! Something I hadn't thought of as we've none in western Washington to worry about. Thanks for that tip!

      @@amputeeoutdoors I’m was living in Florida and now Virginia. Snakes are everywhere. I try to hike when in Colorado and have seen rattlesnakes on the trails there too. Trekking poles are seen too often as a crutch when they really are an enhancement. Glad I was accustomed to them before my amputation.

      Hey, you're an amputee too? What kind of leg to you use? I have a pin lock socket with an Ossur Cheetah Xplorer laminated to it. Lots of spring to get up hills and super lightweight.

    I find that using both arms together works better for me sometimes on steep uphill trails because my upper body strength is not amazing. It also can be mentally easier sometimes if you are tired or not super coordinated because you don't have to think quite as much on where to put all 4 "legs"

    • @amputeeoutdoors
      @amputeeoutdoors  Місяць тому

      Yeah, on those longer hikes towards the end of the day when you're starting to tire out, having four points of contact with the ground makes a huge difference.

      Yeah, I filmed in HDR 10+ and although it didn't show up when I was creating the video, it does in the upload version. I think it's because of the HDR 10+ as I've never had that happen before.
