Winter Review Scottish Small Stream Fly Fishing
Just a short video today and a quick fly-around the snowy local river. We are now more than half way through the close season, so whilst we are not fishing yet we live in hope cheered on by the ever lengthening days and looking towards that shining light at the end of the tunnel! I hope you enjoy it.
Roll on March 15th!

Storm Babet And Hamish Wreak Havoc On The Local River Hi folks, just a quick video checking out the damage and changes storm Babet has caused on our wee local river. But who or what is Hamish I hear you ask? Well ask no more, that question is answered in the video! Music in this video: Bach Cello Suite No. 1, G Major, Prelude By Cooper Cannell

Well hello again folks, it's been a while! My last video was published way back on 18th of July and I’ve had lots of messages wondering what the heck has happened to me. Well as you can see I’m still alive and kicking so I thought I’d go for a quick stroll along my favourite beach where my local river meets the sea, shoot some video and let you know what’s been happening. The fishing season has...

It’s late July and summer appears to have come and gone! The spring was cold, very dry and sunless here on the east coast. By the start of June the river level was already low, not critical, but not ideal either. Then the heat came. One benefit of the sunless spring is that the water temperature remained quite low, so I suppose we could have fished with a clear conscience; not that I did. I did...

Back out on the local river with the rod for the first time since the 6th April! This is quite unprecedented for the start of the season, but the weather has been dreadful, it really has. Continuos east, north east or northerly winds and low temperatures, with permanent grey skies and no sun. Week after week of it! The weather is still unseasonably chilly but I had to get out and at least give ...

The First Stream Of My Youth: Scottish Small Stream Fly Fishing Regular viewers may recall I often refer to my wee local river by our village as “The Stream Of My Youth”. So, with the trout season now over and the depths of winter now upon us what does a trout fly fisherman do? Hibernate until next spring? Sometimes I think bears have the best deal. Sadly we can’t hibernate or fish for trout, but there are still lots of interesting things to do and see. 2022 was a difficult season for trout fly fishing here in Scotland. Very low water levels made for difficult conditions for trout and angler alike. I still fish my little burn that I started on back in my youth. Hope I’m still able to at your age too. Very cool! What’s your thoughts on the wee glass rod? I’ve pondered over it a few times. Not overly fond of the bright orange but it does intrigue me as I’ve never used a glass one

      The glass rod is OK, but you can get a similar self-loading effect by overlining a mid-action carbon rod, say using a #4 line on a #3 rod.

      @@jamesmason8944 what are you talking about? Are you talking about what happening in this video? Because you just said the FISH are damaging THEMSELVES. Now your talking about fisherman handling fish which doesn't happen in this video.

    • @jamesmason8944
      @jamesmason8944 12 днів тому

      @@gavinstuart6704 Fish have a mucoprotein slime coating over their scales to protect them. this acts as a defence against invasion by bacterial, parasitic and fungal pathogens. Biologically essential electrolytes necessary for osmoregulation are lost through breaks that occur in the slime coating, by breaks or abrasions and are readily attacked by disease organisms. The slime coating is the first line of defence. That is why people wet their hands before handling fish to try to prevent damaging this coating. Now to watch these fish battering themselves against rocks and not think of the damage they are doing to their protective coating and not be able to understand why I mentioned handling fish higlights a lack of joined up thinking with your reactionary comment.
