That's the Best way to break in a new rod!!! That stream is much like our streams in the farmlands here in western New York. We had a blanket of snow yesterday and wind, today blue bird sky's!!!😎 God bless
You are doing a wonderful job! I found your channel, along with Chris' about two months ago. I'm from PA in the USA. I'm a local trout, fly fisherman and these videos are helping get through the long winter months. Please keep them coming sir. Good luck in New Zealand. Be careful and be safe. 🙂
Greetings from New England Fred, It's been cold and windy here as well, typical for our march and April. I can deal with the cold but our rivers have lots of overhanging fly eating brush so wind is a challenge. Beautiful brown and well fought by you. I really enjoy your channel, please keep the small stream post coming!
Thanks for your comment Dean. I know what you mean about trees and branches. Some of our rivers are the same, even the one I was fishing today is impossible in some places farther downstream. 🙂
Well done Fred and a super fish , I'm still crying in my beer as lost my biggest trout ever yesterday it took one plunge and smashed my 5lb tippet like it was nothing. Keep the videos coming , cheers Mike
Sorry to hear that Mike. I think we all know that hollow feeling when we lose a big fish. To be honest I think I would have lost that fish if it had been on a less bendy rod when it was trying to get under the log jam. The bend right back to the handle was only apparent when I saw the video. A giant spring that helped protect the tippet. The strength of the fish was astonishing. On bigger rivers and lochs it’s much easier to land fish, on these small burns there are just so many snags they can dive into.
Thanks. It is amazing what goes unseen in some of these small rivers. People often assume there are only small fish, but they do hold the odd surprise.
Hi Fred congratulations on Christening your new rod ,an absolute cracker of a trout. Love your videos never get bored good luck for the rest of the season Rob
Wonderful Brown. Great way to Christen a new rod. I generally just fall in. The scenery is relaxing and your commentary is more than enjoyable. Shoot my Grandfather used to say I was “windy as a bag of farts”. 😉so keep posting and I’ll keep watching. OTB.
From all the accolades Fred , people are really enjoying your films , and rightly so ,very relaxing , Im glad that your new rod seems to be working out OK for you , although I would not know one end from the other , mind what you Mum used to say ," Ne'er cast a cloot till May month is oot " , still true to this day
That looked like a brown trout! Awesome I wish i had streams like that to fish in, but i live in a desert. I just have a handful of man made lakes that mostly have bass
Very nice Fred, the glass rod seemed to handle that fish well! Your certainly catching some good fish from the "local" this season. Love the opening sequence, I must have a go at some slow motion river shots.
Thanks Chris. I like the slo-mo in the intro, I use it a lot. I just shoot these clips at 100 FPS then play them back at 25% speed to get the smooth motion. The opening shots were shot on my Nikon Z6 camera with a 14 - 35 lens. That fish knew where it wanted to go and was not easy to stop. Having it on a giant spring really helped in the confined space.
@@wildfisher Thanks Fred, I'll give it a try on the go pro and see what happens. Have you tried the leaders yet? East wind, bright sun and low rivers, this season is turning out to be just as challenging as last year! You watch it piss down through May!!
@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 I have tried the leader you sent me, sorry I forgot to mention it. Lovely presentation with it. We will need rain soon, the river is fine right now but once the farmers start irrigating that will all change.
Great video Fred., enjoyed watching it this evening - keep them coming “usual haunts or not “ Would love to try one of those rods out in the future on the small streams here in north wales 🏴 … Take care
always look forward to watching yours vidz wildfisher, have you not caught that cracking troot 3 times now?? Do you ever fish the lower part of the water? looking forward to your new adventures on boulder canyon, which may start with a D?
I do fish lower down now and then James but it can be hard going for an old man! Boulder Creek does not start with a "D", but I'm sure you'll get it when you have seen a few videos of it. 😄
Thanks for your comment. I replaced my first pair with another last week. They had developed a slight leak in the right leg. So that was one season. However, you have to bear in mind I fish a lot and I also used them when bank clearing this past winter, so I reckon they had 2 ½ to 3 seasons equivalent wear. The rivers I fish are a mass of brambles and thistles, hard on waders. I have had Orvis and Simms that have not lasted any longer, so at £70 these cheepos served me well.
Hi I had a look at the rods... one ( 7ft payne 98 4wt) looks remarkably like split cane, and a beauty! any idea what it is? Enjoyed that fish, perfect size for the brownie, in my opinion. Cheers and ATB.
Well done Fred, beautiful trout!!! love watching you fish and always learn something too from your days out. Ever try a jingler on your river? Ive been having alot of success on it in Glasgow area. Also wanted to ask what net you use? V handy having the scale built in, hard to find them! Tight lines and I look forward to your next adventure 👍
Yes, sometimes use a Jingler, great early season dry fly! The weigh nets are handy, that one is a McLean, got it from Angling Active in Stirling. Not cheap, but high quality and accurate.
@@wildfisher nice one ill have a look at those nets, worth having a good one. Just popped out for an hr to my local river to a little bridge I know and tested a wee size 18 sedge, managed 2 lovely trout that were sitting in a bubble line, Not bad for a lunch break!!! 👌 Thanks again, as I say I learn so much from your vids! 👍
I tie it in various colours but the main one is dead simple. Hook: 14 to 10 Thread; olive Body: pheasant tail ice dub Hackle : palmered red game Rib; tying tread just to make the fly more durable Wing: Pale elk of deer hair That’s it!
Hi Fred, I was chatting with Phillip on his channel and he says you might be able to give me a bit of advice on a drone you have recently bought? I was looking to get one (GoPro compatible) and it seems the choices are endless? How are you getting on with yours? My but of river (The Coquet in Northumberland) has quite a few over hanging trees in places so I am looking for something that is easy to control. Really enjoying your new seasons videos. I hope to start making some by the end of May when I get home from work!
Hi Patrick, I'm no expert on drones, but I have a DJI Mavic Air 2. It has collision avoidance detectors and various tracking modes - I can set it to follow me for example. Some of the simpler drones don't have this - the first one I had didn't and it ended up in the river! One thing to remember is all drones (except toys) have to be registered with the CAA (about £10 / year) and if the drone is 250G or heavier you have to pass an online test (which is not hard). Take a look at this register-drones.caa.co.uk/ Hope that is of some help.
I’m wondering on why you chose the 8’ model rather than the 7’6”? My local club water is never more than 30’ wide, which model would you recommend for this ? Cheers
@@brendannolan2508 Could be - foot for foot glass is also heavier. Glass is also slower although these modern s-glass rods are a different animal from the old 1960s and 70s rods.
Brilliant 👏 fantastic films worthy of being on TV

It was indeed a brown trout Thomas. The bass is a fine fish, but we don't have bass in Scotland it's too cold for them! 🙂

It's all down to personal preferences. Generally I find I get more control with longer rods.
Nobody seems to make a fibreglass rod longer than 8 feet or so, certainly not one for lines of 4wt or lighter. Anybody know why this is?
I have noticed that. Getting glass rods is not easy these days and can't say I have seen a 4 wt longer than 8 feet.
@@wildfisher I wonder if glass' lack of backbone would make a longer rod unusable?

Tires in your river? Where are you really, India?
Did you learn to spell in India, its spelled tyres.
