  • Two weeks on and back out at last! The weather has been cold, windy and dull with a few hard frosts and today is little better. But were the fish playing? Join me on the river for half an hour and find out. 😊

    Stunning scenery, there's no need to fish, just enjoy the surroundings and listen to the water.

    Good to see freshwater mussels thriving in your river...sign of a pretty good ecosystem...did you have any green mussels + potato fritters during your NZ trip?

      I ate lots of mussels in NZ TK, garlic and chilli being the favourites. 😁

    Hi Fred, thanks for another lovely video wish your stream was near me , all the rivers in mid wales are still high and fast and no-one is catching anything so i'm not missing much just now but summer is yet to come. ATB mike

      It's so frustrating when that happens mind you after last summer's drought we might end up being grateful for the wet spring. 😊😊

    Great value Fred. My own club water is £30 a year and £12 for pensioners, 7 mile of river to fish, a decent run of salmon at times as well. 😉

    Nice video Fred and good to get that first fish of the season from the local Still flooded off down here but hoping to get out over Easter. Not sure about the new traffic cone indicator, looks like a bugger to cast😂

    I understand the dilemma. I've had a few people buy permits for the Almond after watching my videos, and I've spoken to a lot of them either online, on the river bank, or in the tackle shop, and I've taken one or two on a wee guided tour of my favourite pools. It's good for the club, but we do have an issue with poachers during the summer, and there's always that one guy who decides that he can take a fish or two if nobody is looking.
    As much as I want to promote sustainable and responsible fishing, I'm aware that not everybody else does, so I rarely post when I catch one of the bigger fish because I don't want some bampot going up with his spinning rod and trying to pull it out for the pot. Posting a video where I catch a 3lb+ fish would be great for the club, but it would also catch the attention of the wrong sort altogether. They won't buy permits, and they don't care a hoot about preservation.
    We have a healthy membership, but where we once held the AGM in a function suite, a three piece suite would do the job now. We need to raise the profile of the club to attract new members to the committee, but that will come at the cost of attracting undesirables who count a bottle of cheap wine as part of thier essential tackle.
    What to do?

      Yep, well said. You have summed up the dilemma perfectly. Angling is dying on its arse, I can't remember the last time I saw a youngster fishing. 😢

    Would you please explain how the trout fishing permit system works with respect to clubs? Do clubs "rent" access to sections of streams from landowners for their permit-holding members? This is not common in the US, where we have a lot of public access for those with state licenses. Thanks, Keith

    • @wildfisher
      @wildfisher  Рік тому

      I'll try to explain it in the next video. It's complicated!

    The dilemma is a dilemma Fred! I don't get it so badly just because anyone on Lewis who wants to fish, does. Nothing I say is going to change that. So if my videos encourage anyone then it is going to be a visitor and, being honest, most anglers don't want to pay the cost of a ferry ticket. I try and give the local clubs a bit of a name check but I have no idea if it sells them even one extra permit per year.

    • @wildfisher
      @wildfisher  Рік тому

      Yes, there is certainly no real pressure on the vast majority of highland lochs Philip and to be honest it's the same here.

    Glad to see your videos back after the closed season wild fisher, really enjoyed that thanks. Started early on the hill lochs myself this year. First day out was 25th March and had 7 the best being almost 2lb. Had a few good days since with some nice fat well conditioned trout. We've had a mild winter in the west coast and very little snow on the hills this year with some nice hatches so think it's made a big difference. All the lochs I fish are 1000ft above sea level aswell. Tight lines glad to see you back 👍
