This channel to give insight into DCS World's Ka-50 "Black Shark". Also known as the Werewolf or Hokum, this special single seater attack helo has a lot of unknowns, partly from the small production run, partly lost in translation, but mostly because it's a different design - a single seater to what's always a job for 2 pilots.
Most of my content has been tested or experimented - it's not simply copied from another tutorial or written manual, but experimentation in DCS to find out how it actually works when you get your game on, understand what it's doing and why it's doing it and little ways you can get the most out of it.

Rotor/Ground Ops event | Tactical DCS
Kick-off of season 2 of the casual Tactical DCS's Rotor/Ground Ops.
This time A-10's and F-16s helping out. I was paired with an Apache and Kiowa, first clearing the airfield then then progressing North handling threats. Other flights of Apaches, Kiowas, Hueys, Hips and Gazelles were handling Spec Ops insertions and attacking other points.
It's might be week-ish-ly, so check the events on the Tactical DCS discord.

Volk, you are the KA-50 Master, I've ingested every video of yours at least twice now on the subject. However, am I nucking futz or what as I can't find any training from you specifically on the radios? 📻
Everything twice? Wow. I see the indoctrination has worked ;-) . You're right that I don't have any radio tutorials, other than touching on them in the data link tut maybe. I haven't revisted everything shark from the beginning - at least originally I only made a video if I felt that thing wasn't covered, or covered in enough depth before. Might do one later but it's not on the cards right now, unless I guess ED fixed it so radio works with SRS broadcasts in multiplayer and you could get a bearing on who's talking. One you switch with red rotaries, it has a standby mode for a "Guard" frequency receive only. The other you change mission pre-set channels and hold the white Tune button until the green light goes out. Or I guess release Tune early for some intermediate frequency. Then there's the ADF/Homing stuff which I think Pickinthatbanjo might have a video on.

I've had plans for ages on making new, updating videos replacing this one - both a slower pacing (not as extreme time-saving edits) and some new info, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Will see if I can update CC's on this, but might not be that soon. Some of my later videos 3rd/4th-ish I changed the editing.

The Vikhr caps on your Video does open and close 🤔 I thought it was a bug that they still look loaded as in BS 1 and 2 you could see through the empty Tube, but the Cap closes again after the Missile is fired
Saw a post I think on the ED forums with them saying that's how it's supposed to work (with the springloaded caps snapping shut afterward).

The specific one is part of the Black Shark Den squadron's skins, so, no one I can share outside the squadron ;-)
I stumbled upon the Ka-52 mod few days ago, and got hooked. Made me re-learn the Ka-50. Great video. Also love to see night ops in the Ka-50, a rare thing. I fly the Mi-24P most of the time, so Petro helps out a lot in night time.
Does Petro ID stuff at night as well as he does during the daytime?
@@volkvoort Nope, they appear as yellow, but turn red if they start firing. But normally its not an issue if you know you are in bad guy territory.

Well, maybe an increase in collective, with an accompanying pedal input to remain facing forwards would be the fastest to get out of the column of air, or rather have those columns no longer be exactly on the tips

Yep, there's definitely some things left over from 2008 still visible too :P
To be fair, they have made several graphical improvements since 2008. DCS World is an on-going project and constantly worked-on. The Ka-50, the helo he flies in this video, for instance, has been remastered twice. IDK what engine is used for DCS though.
The Black Shark module evolved into DCS World, which then incorporated the standalone A-10C module, Flaming Cliffs and grew from there. It's ED's own proprietary engine. I'm not running an exactly powerful rig, so the graphics haven't been bumped up to higher standards.

Sir, I always dim my HUD to the lowest level still comfortably readable while flying at night. It helps tremendously.
100%. I usually like to do that as well, night mode and dim it right down along with the ABRIS and a few other lights when doing a mission. The footage here I often had it spawn in almost-ready and then just flipped the switches I needed to for launch, rather than fix everything for a full mission.

Thanks. FLIR camera existed but only on like 1-2 prototypes (including the glass cockpit version), but not the production model. Well, deemed-working FLIR cameras at least. There were various low-light versions tested.

Very interesting video. I agree that the KA-50 is not the best choice in night ops, but I did a run last night during dark hours and was actually able to find targets in urban lit areas, although it took some effort to find a target. Nonetheless it was quite fun and a challenge. So on conclusion the KA-50 can be utilized in lit urban areas, even when its dark. I also used the enemy tracer fire to pinpoint possible enemy positions and intending to rocket barrage the area. But I was shot at before I got the chance. Yeah. typically brightness up, contrast down on Shkval might see something. Cities with nasties hiding in them like Igladudes...even if it wasn't night-time....ugh
Oof. I just fired up the Ka-50 after a long time away to check out the Kola map in style and suddenly having this NAV ERROR problem. Thought maybe I'd forgotten some part of the startup.
Might be your date is too early for satellite nav (think cut off was 1992).

Default is the "O" key. Suggest binding it to your HOTAS if you have spare binds - it's used often.
I just flew half an hour atleast through the mountains of caucasus, always over speed ofc. and then when I tried to slow down I suddenly lost engine 1 and then when I noticed it and slowed down further I lost 2 aswell and ejected :c
There's a couple of Campaign missions in Caucasus that has you flying at some extreme altitudes - so, could be dust if you were hugging the slopes, but could also be Icing Failures. I couldn't get immediate results or theories on the parameters and burnt out slightly doing the dust tests, but essentially, if the outside temp is 1 degree or less (look on the thermometer on your canopy straight up), then switch on engine de-icing for both engines + rotor de-icing + both pitot de-icing switches. They're all at the top there with the dust switces.
AI apaches will instantly lock and start shooting the cannon. A tiny tad of BS from my opinion
