My mom’s family is from the south, Arkansas & Georgia, but I didn’t grow up eating chicken n’dumplins!! I just made up my own over 25 yrs ago. Served it to my beau a few yrs ago, he took one bite, looked up & said, sorry mom, but it’s better than yours!! I was in a woman’s shelter a couple yrs before that & some of us got together in the double kitchen, made meatloaf, mashed taters & all the fixings on a Sat., next day I made 2 pots of chicken n’dumplins...they were gone in nothing flat. One of the gals would always just walk through & really keep to herself, after eating by herself what was made Sat & she got a bowl of this on Sun., she came & introduced herself to me to say thank you!! I think she had southern roots like me, she was African American, & she told me after eating my cooking, she said it tasted like home. I thought that was one of the best compliments someone can get on their cooking.

I like to use a pizza roller to cut my dumplings! Paula literally got me through Covid lock downs (I’m in SF, we locked down first and opened last) and these videos were the only thing that gave me joy. I just moved away from my family in AZ, my nephew in LA was just born and I didn’t see my family for two years. Everyone in the Bay Area was scared of each other, my business shut down and was devastated, I got a 50% salary decrease because of the hospitality industry devastation, churches were forced to close, and absolutely no fellowship. Paula, I didn’t know if I would emotionally make it. Your holiday shows always made me feel like home and god bless you for giving us these videos. I come back to watch them and cook with them all the time and I just want to say God Bless you. You didn’t have to do these and you have no idea what you did for people. You saved my heart from horrible isolation. All my love and prayers to you.

My family is from Tennessee. My grandmother put a roasting hen in a big pan with salt, pepper and an onion. Put water half way up. Baked for an hour @350. She took broth out and got it cold. She took chicken out of pan and had the broth simmering. She took 5 cups flour and cold chicken broth, salt, pepper and made her dough. Rolled put in pot with lid on 20 minutes and off 20 minutes. German style is called spritzer. Just take the floured dough between your hands and move hands back & forth. It makes smaller & finer spores of dough. Mom would use the pie dough to make this dish with chucker or use the left over pie dough & make small flat dough & put butter & Brown sugar & some times jelly on top & place in oven around the pies. Yummy hot sweet cakes for the kids.

I watched my grandmother do this many times when I was a child. She cooked the chicken the same way. Back then we had no soup or flavorings to add other than salt and pepper. She boned the chicken but often a bone or two remained. Grandmother rolled out her dumplings and cut into long strips. She then draped the strips over her arm and pinched them off into the pot of boiling liquid stiring constantly. This is a wonderful recipe that bring back memories.

Hey Paula, I just wanted to holler at you and tell you we still love you and it's good to see you doing well!
To this day we call you "oh momma" cause when my youngest son was little he loved you so much he'd get excited waiting for you to come on tv & when you'd feed ppl, so often they'd say "mmm... OH MAMA that's good! Mmm"!! No lie he'd cry himself to sleep if he didn't get to see oh momma every day. 💗💔💗
I always told him we'd write you a letter but bad ol momma (me) never did.
He's 15 now & everyyyy once in awhile he asks me if I remember you as though you're a long lost family member.... 😞
I have no idea whether or not you read these comments but if you do I hope you see mine and know how much you're loved & admired by ppl you don't even know.
You helped us through a lot of tough times too. My middle son is 18 & your stories you shared when your boys were on the show about not having money for a Christmas tree and things like that; (teary eyed) you just really helped us know we weren't alone & it wouldn't be like this forever.
Anyway. We love you Paula. Kiss those boys & that hubby for me lol cause yea they feel like family too.

They both stand at the stove together while one drops the dumpling, while the other uses the back of the ladle to keep ladling the broth over the dumpling and pushed down. Very gentle. It’s like they are dancing together while at the stove. I can never get mine to come out like theirs because it’s missing that special something. I want to thank you so much for showing me the old way of making dumplings. This is how my mother made them. I used biscuick. But her we're better. I didn't pay close enough attention when she was making them. You showed me exactly how she did it.
My mother was a wonderful cook. Everyone loved her food. She made a lot of things like you do. I remember standing on a stool and her teaching me to roll biscuits. I must have been about 4 years old. I lost my mother almost 2 years ago. Alzheimer's took her too soon. I miss her cooking so much.
Something she made for me that I loved was her meatloaf. It wasn't fancy but for the life of me I can't get it right. She used oats to "stretch it". It was always moist with onion and green pepper. Of course ketchup was on top. Can you show me how to make a good basic meatloaf. She didn't use bacon. She was raised during the depression & being the oldest girl out of 12, she always cooked for an army.
Thank you for this. I want you to know how much I have enjoyed your videos. They have really helped get me through this difficult time. Do you have a PO box for mail?

Very, very similar to how you say your grandmother made them. Everyone loved Mama Rosie's chicken and dumplings, but me especially. Good morning Paula !!!! 🌸💗🌸
You are such an inspiratin for me.
In these times I got so much work to do and nobody there for help.
I got 2 gardens here, a small one and an bigger one.
We had a lot of rain in this June, so it happened, that I did not drive to the bigger garden, which is about 10,5 miles from where I live and where the smaler garden is.
Yesterday, we had hot, hot weather here, I desided to drive to the bigger garden.
Arriving there I could allready see when unlocking the garden gate, that there is a lot of work to do.
    Eveything grew damatically.
Espacially the blackberry bushes have grown a lot, over and over full of flowers and bees that were in their pollination work. there is a rich harvest to expect.
But unfortunately I have to cut back a large part because the branches overgrow the paths.
There were also a few ticks hauting me, so I couldn't start working because I wasn't dressed properly, was only in a light summer dress and didn't have a repellent with me.
The meadow too had grown up and needs to be mowed and the hedges urgently need a pruning.
A violent thunderstorm started and I headed back to my house 10.5 miles away.
In the evening I got the feeling that I can never do it alone.
Today it is raining again, I hope it will stop later.
So I took my macbook with my morning coffee and checked what Paula Deen was sending to cheer me up a little.
Paula, you mentioned your restaurants and I thought it was so huge what you started alone and what you have achieved so far.
You gave me a big boost of inspiration and I think I will get my garden back in shape, whether alone or not and despite ticks and bees.
I only discovered your videos in youtube during the quarantine period. and I'm so glad you cheered me up so much and your positive manner gave me a lot of strength.
Thank you Paula Deen you are an inspiration for all the women who have to master their lives out there.
You showed us that you can build a life even as a woman alone and that help comes with success.
I wish you and your team a wonderful day and please everyone stays healthy and stays spared the virus !!!
    Gabriele, from Austria

My adult daughter eats at Pigeon Fordge all the time when on vacation, Paula.
Last night (April 5, 2023) & ordered 🐔 chicken n' dumplings, BUT, rosemary took over ALL the flavor! Sadly, it kinda' spoiled it for her. We'll make this recipe soon. ❤

Paula Dean is my hero! I have so many of her recipe books and let me tell you, she makes me look so good!
Also, she’s so natural in these videos. Finger licking good! I love how she answers the questions we’ve all wondered and with no hesitation. Salted or unsalted? I will now just do salted like her! Love you Paula!

Good morning Miss Paula from Wild Wonderful WV! My husband makes our chicken and dumplings from his mom's recipe. He rolls out his dumplings, cuts them in squares before adding them to his chicken stock too. His Great Aunt Toppsy used to call dumplings "Patches". My mouth is watering just watching you make these dumplings!!

That's exactly how I make chicken and dumplings. The only difference is I strain my broth for a better look of the dish. I learned from my grandmother. We are southern cooks from North Carolina.

I have anted to learn how my mom and grandma made it but she was too young at the time, and then when I got older I didn’t care to learn. Now I’m a grandpa myself and learned how to make the best chicken and dumplings from Ms Paula Deen. Have been making them like this for years and there is never an empty chair at the table. You go girl.
