Very good how-to video, good job with the camera angles. I appreciate the extra effort you put into it making sure we can see what you're doing and talking us through it. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure! I'm glad it helped you out.
Hey, Thank you for going through THE EFFORT to make this video AND for saying "a little more clearance Clarence"... I said it with you and laughed cracked up!
The things our dads teach us lol
Have a Safe New Years man 👍
The pleasure is all mine, and I couldn't be happier that someone finally picked up on that joke!
A safe and happy New Years to you and yours, as well!
Thank you gorbthe time making a detailed video, I made that job to my chevy 99 I took out the gearbox and I going to fo the same on my suerra 2006 watchin your video I think on take down sway bar and stering bar to change everything
I'm glad it helped! Let me know if you run into any issues that I might be able to help you troubleshoot along the way.
Thank you, watched a lot of videos. Done the same job on my 99 Silverado as well. But now I have to do it to my 2013 2500HD. Figured I’d brush back up on the job, nothing new to me but I know the pitman arm is quite a b****. By far your video did a good job. Like the work buddy.
I'm glad I could be of help and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.
you can hold the nut and have someone crank the wheel if the nut on the pitman arm comes off hard makes it way easier
Another great suggestion. If I could deal with someone else around me while I work on my truck, I'd definitely give this a try!
I'm having an impossible time breaking loose that darn pitman arm from the steering rod. I'm going to try the pitman arm puller and heat it up like you did in the video and see if that works. I bought an air hammer a pickle chisel and neither of them worked.
I'm surprised the air hammer didn't work, but heat definitely should. If it's still stuck after applying the heat, you might try cutting a vertical line into the side of the pitman arm where it wraps around the steering gear post to weaken it a bit. Don't go all the way through or else you could damage the post, but a deep enough cut and a few whacks from the air hammer should do the trick.
You have a higher risk of damaging the gearbox if you use a pickle fork.
I just replaced my steering box and was wondering what size of crows foot is that. Thanks
I'm not sure if I said it in the video or not, but it's 1-5/16".
Just did this yesterday. It's a royal PIA. Now the tapered stud of the new pitman arm will not go deeper than the threads into the center link. Using a Moog K6654HD in a '05 GMC Sierra 4wd. No reason it should'nt fit... going back out this morning to try again.
Don't stress out. If you've already popped off the tie rod and it still won't go in, try using either a C-clamp to pull the two surfaces together, or use a bottle jack to push up on the drag link (this method is a bit more tricky, but still doable). Whatever you do, definitely do not try to tighten the nut before the two surfaces are touching. You'll get to a point where the nut will strip the threads from the pitman arm and just spin freely (I've done this in the past so that others don't have to).
@@funcle_kevin I finally determined the tapered stud was simply at angle that wasn’t aligned with the hole in the center link. Ended up using a floor jack & block to push the center link up onto the stud. Went very smooth.
@@donaldshelton Right on! Glad to hear it's all done.
Me and my dad also seem to be stuck at the part tomorrow we are going to try to loosen the tie. Rod and see if we can wiggle it around more we are having problems poppin it where it goes onto the steering box
@@axelhazard7697 Once the tie rod is off, you should have no problem at all. If you do, don't hesitate to reach out. I can try to help you troubleshoot it, but the tie rod trick is pretty reliable from my experience.
What size nut is on the pitman arm on the gear box.
1-5/16"
Shoot ill pay the 1k to have it done
you can pay me 500
its easy trust me i hate working on cars myself but this is to easy to not diy
@@ropeyzkittlez9703 where u live?
At 14:39, mine will NOT go in... 🤨
What year is that
2005
Is this the same for a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4?
Yes.
@@funcle_kevindid you have the truck jacked up ?
@@funcle_kevin so I did the pitman arm and now I did the inner tie rod and outer tie rod but one wheel is facing straight with steering wheel and the other side is facing sideways kinda of and both outer tie rods are all the way in on the inner tie rod ? Anyway you can help me man please
@@MariosLawnCare If both outers are all the way in, I'm thinking the pitman arm itself wasn't aligned properly. When you put the new pitman arm on, was the wheel straight? My best guess is that you were off by a tooth. When the wheel is straight, the pitman arm should also be straight. If that's not the case, pull it back off and try to realign it. It can only go on 4 ways, and the inners should be showing some thread. Let me know if this helped or created more questions. We'll figure it out somehow!
@@funcle_kevin well the wheel was towards the left like the video so I could get it in. Also both idler arm and pitman arm are straight since they have the guide pins do you think if I moved it 1 turn it will still line up ?
i cut mine bc nobody had a puller my size lol cut it and knock it off thruogh the hood had the entire front end replaced in 4 hrs
Cutting the arm would definitely cut down on the labor hours!
This is NOT the "easy way"!
What do you suggest to make it easier?
@@funcle_kevin from watching your video, dropping the steering box would be easier. Your video is evidence that it was a pita for you, and is not the "easy way". Maybe just change the title to "my way".
