    Thanks Eric! I did this job this morning on my 2003 Yukon XL. Was planning on removing the steering gear box but gave your method a try. It worked out just fine and saved me a lot of time. An air tool and a pitman arm puller are definately a must.

      Heck yeah! I'm glad the video I made was of help to you! It's really not a hard job at all. Your arms may get tired holding them up. Idk what it is about being under a vehicle with arm in the air that make them so tired so quick but it does lol best wishes and thanks for your comment.

    I just got my new pitman arm, idler arm, and idler arm bracket delivered this afternoon. I assembled the idler arm and bracket outside the vehicle. Removed the old stuff and got the new parts installed in half an hour. Because I believed it was necessary to disconnect the intermediate shaft, disconnect the power steering lines, and remove the steering box, I decided to wait until tomorrow. If I saw this video first I would have finished today.

    Just to add to the conversation, some gear boxes have 3 main splines instead of 4. If my research is right, either the heavy duty 3/4 ton...or 4wd's have the three spline. I just replaced my gear box and pitman arm last weekend.

  • @luisuriostegui1390

    If the gear box is leaking minor drops of power steering fluid through the pitman arm. Is that a symptom of a bad pitman arm or is that the gear box needing replacement?

    • @cyoutellme
      @cyoutellme  5 років тому +3

      That's a "gearbox seal" that's seeping fluid past it... if it was mine I'd keep an eye on gearbox fluid level regularly to get an idea of just how much fluid is being lost and how fast it's being lost... if it's a very minor issue (not needing topped off with fluid but once every other month or so then I wouldn't worry about it myself) but if it's leaking out and needing fluid topped off weekly or daily in bad cases then you will want to have the seals in the gearbox replaced or actually just replace the gearbox altogether would be the best thing.

    • @luisuriostegui1390
      @luisuriostegui1390 5 років тому +1

      Eric Skaggs yea it’s very minor. I noticed that it only drips a few drops when the engine is on and the wheel is being turned.

    Every video I've watched shows they took off the gear box. I will decide once I get it off the ground so I can get under there and look. My puller will be here tomorrow so I guess I will get started in the morning

  • @ArmenArmenjs

    On my 2004 2W avalanche, I gather you don't need to separate the gear box from steering linkage, just take off the three bolts will allow more room to pass the sway bar and frame?

    • @cyoutellme
      @cyoutellme  2 роки тому +1

      Yes just loosen them most the way and this allows for the room needed.

    Awesome video man. I'm about to tackle this same project this weekend. I'm also replacing the idler arm and bracket as well. I was also wondering if you were able to tell a significant difference after you replaced the pitman arm.

    • @cyoutellme
      @cyoutellme  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for your comment McDizzle! Yes after replacing I noticed better steering response! The steering wheel felt tighter as well! I didn't have any clunking before or after replacing but sometimes you will hear a clunking sound if the pitmen arm ball joint is badly worn. For me it was loose steering and lack of steering response. Be sure to check tire pressure as low tires will also cause delays in steering response as well. Not saying that's your problem just throwing that out there. Best wishes on doing the repair yourself. It's really not to hard with the right tools. 👍

    I’ve got to replace mine on my 06z71. I have about 2” play in the steering wheel and that’s the only movement I see so I’m going to start there. By the way, how tight was it again that it needs to go back on?

    • @cyoutellme
      @cyoutellme  2 роки тому

      Tighter then ,. Well ya know lol 😆 also being that yours is a 06 there's chance the gear splines in the power steering gear box could be worn out some as well causing play in the steering wheel. Definitely replace the bad part first then see what's left. Best wishes.

    • @cyoutellme
      @cyoutellme  Рік тому

      I’ve never heard of doing that for this specific repair. I’ve personally never tied off the steering wheel replacing a pitman arm ever. I’m state certified and have 23 years experience. This video was shot in my driveway working on a family vehicle. on a scale of 1 to 10 being one is east and ten very difficult id say for someone who doesn’t work on cars everyday this would be a level 5 difficulty at most. With the right tools and video guidance this job really isn’t a big deal. Best of luck. Oh and if it makes you feel better go ahead one time off the steering wheel. It shouldn’t have any affect on what you’ll be doing under the vehicle.
