I’ve heard about the bearing but didn’t touch on it as the shaft alone fixed my noise. I’ll put a link for it in the description as well being it is a good idea to swap it out for a 100% fix.
Because of the popularity of this year model and similarity between models Silverado,Avalanche,Tahoe,Suburban, etc.) this kind of video will forever help someone working their Chevy/GMC. Thanks!
That clunking and swaying when breaking has been plaguing me for like 2 years. I was just about to take it in somewhere. Saved me with this one thank you!
Of all the videos I have watched, this is the only one that described the noise. Especially the fact that it only happens while turning and over bumps at low speed which is exactly what my 07 Silverado does. Thank you.
Couple of things; in some cases the intermediate steering shaft can fix the clunk. Many times it's the steering column bushing/bearing (the white bushing you can see when you are pulling the intermediate shaft from the steering column). Second, instead of wrapping your nut and socket in tape to keep the nut on, put a piece of paper towel around the nut, put it in the socket, and tear off the excess. Nut will stay without falling out of the socket. That's a life saver in the tight footwell of those GMT800s.
I actually did the trick with the paper towel to get that top pedal nut back in! So far with the shaft alone everything is quiet, but I won’t be surprised if I need to throw a bearing in it.
Got an 04 Yukon Denali, Watched your videos and fixed my steering clunk for free and tightened my steering box for free thanks to your videos. Thanks for your videos! Keep it up!
This has been the fix for many years. The first thing you do is disconnect one end... Then fully extend and compress the shaft to redistribute the grease. That usually fixes it. If the clink comes back then you replace the shaft.
As a tahoe owner of this generation I can totally relate to a lot of the problems you fix. I have my garage and tools and I'm doing the same things you are doing to yours. While rebuilding my trans I also did the transfer case and found some near catastrophic failure stuff in there maybe a couple thousand miles and it would have quit on me. But the truck has made several trips into central mexico to Oregon US. Not once did it fail.
Just bought a 04 avalanche it's clunking this video makes way more sense now thanks man. I've greased evening no links are loose I thought it felt like it was in the colum
Hey lsxmatt I was doing doughnuts in my 2004 Chevy Tahoe and when I finished swinging it my steering wheel got hard to turn does anyone know what it is I can’t steer anymore
I remember saying a few cuss words about the power adjustable pedal also when I replace the one in my 06. I replaced mine in '10 with the new then updated GM shaft. 11 years and 70,000 miles later no clunking still.
I'm impressed by your diagnostic skills. Keep the Tahoe videos coming. I like to see the upgrades and repairs you're making. Your Camaro brought me to your channel/ The content keeps me coming back, anxious to see more, o matter if it's the Camaro, Firebird or Tahoe.
I thought my pump wz goin bad but with the new symptoms tht have started im almost 100% positive this is the problem. Ive got a 99 blazer nd i dnt trust takin it into a shop therefore i need to borrow someones garage asap n get fixin it my damn self. Thnx 4 the video helped in huge amounts
Good work. My 01 Sierra had sloppy steering, but my mechanic loves these trucks and replaced a part that made it much better. I just bought a 05 4 door sierra z71 that I've already started picking through. Nice to know you're showing how to fix the common issues.
Been enjoying the hell out of your Tahoe videos. I have a 2009 and your videos has helped a ton. Also wanted to add that I'm ok with fixing my Tahoe. But the way you explain everything that you do makes it easier to understand what is wrong and how it can be fixed.
Had the same issue with my 00 monte SS. There is an updated column. But I remembered as a big truck tech. Those shafts on big trucks are greaseable.. A drill and a tap and one zerk later. No bloodshed.. I just put a pump ish in there 2x a year. No problems.
Great video, I watched it 3 times then did the repair today. No problems, took me less than an hour from start to finish. That was a very helpful tip to use electric tape to secure the 10mm nut for the gas peddle. I used my flexible socket holder and the tape, would have struggled otherwise!
I was able to solve that clunking by using a zip tie to pull the play out of the steering shaft bearings. The bearings are in the plastic part (I believe it's the white plastic part in this video) around the steering shaft above the brake pedal. On my truck the plastic part has a hole on the edge pointed up. I just inserted a long zip tie through the hole and wrapped it around a part above it so I could tighten the zip tie and pull the bearing part tight so it doesn't move. 3 years later it's still working great.
I'm definitely a subaru guy and always will be, not a fan of gm stuff if i am honest but i enjoy watching your videos! I really like these ones (tahiti) since they give you random real world info you can use someday if a friend has an issue or something. Keep doing cool stuff, Matt!
We have a 2004 Cadillac Escalade in the family with 128,000 miles currently. these videos will definitely be a big help in the future as for these GM suvs all seem to have the same common issues.
Great job looks like an easy fix and the knock of over 5 yeARS HAS GOT THE BEST OF ME, well honestly my wife drove it yesterday and said whats wrong with your truck. What!!!!! did you break something I guess I'll look at it and fix it......of course thank you you tube Good stright forward advise for my 2003 2500 Chevy
Thank you for this video. I just changed the upper thinking that’s all you need. And the clunking came back. Now I know I should do the lower. Thanks again
just replaced the shaft and plastic collar. Removed the acclratr pedal ans bracket and engine side boot, made it a breeze. still clunks, but wow! responsive, tight, and sensitive steering. More like new with every new whatever I put in it. Thanks!
Thanks my 2005 needs this , maybe that bearing plastic thingy also. I just had the shop change the power steering pump , and steering gear box . They said they were leaking and bad . My steering did feel strange and hard to turn before . It is smooth now!! But yes it has that little clunky sound when you hit bumps. Trying to work the courage to do myself 👍
Dude, thank you for this video! I recently replaced my upper and lower control arms, front brakes, shocks and coil overs as well as inner and outer tie rods on my 08 sierra. It was in need for sure! 230K on the stock stuff. Of course other than the 2014 shocks and struts I bought for way cheap from a new take off that got lifted. Also, some new wheels and tires from a 2020 AT4. Its pretty nice. Rides like new! Then boom....About a week after my replacement I was driving on the freeway and hit a bump and heard a pop. All kinds of wonky noises now. Seems to be low speed turning, braking or just low speed in parking lots that are rough. On the highway nice and tight! Again, thanks for the video as I couldn't seem to figure it out and for 60 bucks for the OE part.... I'm down for sure! Sounds like this is my problem. I got a years worth of alignment when I did the control arms, then again after the tie rod ends last weekend. They were super floppy!
Love the Tahoe videos. Keep them up. I have a gold 1998 Tahoe with 126k miles that I bought 6 years ago. Love it. It is a beast and we beat the piss out of it. I’m on the hunt for an 03 to 06 Suburban or Yukon XL as my family gets bigger. 3 kids, a dog and a lot of gear is too hard to slam in the back of a Tahoe now with all of our camping gear and desert shooting trips.
Green steering bearing....holy shit what a pain in the ass.....just rebuilt my avalanche 2005 suspension from your other Tahoe video and love these videos so do more Matt. Oh, when I did the suspension I did EVERYTHING except idler & pitman arms, new centerlink and everthing all the way out to even the roters (same calipers) and got in my truck and steering was all over the place. I'm guessing I might have needed to seatbelt down the steering wheel but didn't think i needed to. Trying to figure out if all i need to do is tighten the steering nut at the gear box. Anyway, keep up the videos Matt Love them Dave
Just replaced this exact shaft on my 01 Suburban with 325K miles since i was hearing a light clunk sound with my steering. Have had several of these generation LS trucks and I have had to do it several times with those trucks also. The one I got on ebay was $30 shipped
Great video... will be doing this on my 2003 and 2006 Silverado. I’ve been thinking it was just wear and tear and nothing could be done to fix it. Glad I came across your video.
I redone the entire front end from the hub bearings to to the idler and pitman arms and shafts. I have the slow turning clunk sound. I thought it was my new parts. This video shed some light on the fact. Im going to change the upper and lower and that lil bearing. See how that goes it should work.
FYI : There is a hole in the bottom center of your steering column that you can insert a (3/16" D X 6" L) anti-rotation pin into to lock the wheel in place.
I was a glorified lube tech for a few years at a GM dealership (I did a bit more than just oil changes). I did a lot of GM steering shafts, but never on the trucks. The actual ASE master tech did those. He made me do the cars, which are an absolute PITA.
I have noticed the clunking on my 2002 Chevy Express Van for the last year and took it into the repair shop. We spent $4000 worth of repairs but it was still clunking. I found this video and told them I figured it out and shared this video, but they just told me the intermediate steering shaft is fine and that my van is just old and sounds like that. Is it bad to drive around with it clunking?
Loved the video! Thanks man. Ive got an 03 and 05 that both need this done. My pops has an 06 and I just sent him the link to this video so he too can do this repair.
Thank you, that noise has been getting on my nerves to no end. I thought after I had the entire front end replaced, ball joints, etc etc, it would stop but it didn't. even my mechanic didn't know why. I just ordered the parts including the plastic bushing. I can't wait to get it put on. I bought my 2002 Tahoe to travel with my 3 dogs, take them to the open land, fields, parks and such. I could not stand driving that truck with that hideous sound.
Really appreciate the Tahoe content, I have done a lot of the things u have done by watching your videos. I have an 05 Suburban same color, z71 etc, but I have the 4x4...regardless your videos have me me tremendously in maintenance and repairs
I have an 04 suburban. Only when I turn left I feel a vibration and what sounds like a metal door creaking noise coming from my steering wheel. I’ve tried looked thru tons of videos on UA-cam but I haven’t ran into any video with a solution to my problem or even diagnose my problem. A friend of mine said I may need to grease my steering wheel shaft but I’ve yet to get help on it. I’m getting ready to take my suburban to a shop because the noise bugs the crap out of me.
TIP: Use a Heavy Bodied grease in the splines. I used 'Mercruiser' spline grease in my 03 Suburban at 125k and it was still quiet at 225K. Sure was annoying until fixed.
@@Cream_CurdlR Removal of the steering shaft in the engine compartment. I thought about drilling it and putting a grease zert in it for future greasing but the grease I used was too thick for a grease gun.
I have an 08 Silverado and I've had this clunking sound just like you mentioned. I didn't really notice it until after I lifted it so I thought it had something to do with the driver's side strut. I'm definitely gonna be checking it out this weekend. Thanks for making this video.
@@robertoobregon3750 no, honestly I got busy fixing other things and I forgot all about this. I got another vehicle, so I don't drive my truck that often. But i still need to fix it.
Never noticed those symptoms on my '01 Tahoe. Nice to know it's a simple fix. Only thing I've noticed is that the auto-rotation of the steering wheel upon turn recovery isn't "auto". It needs a little help to initiate. Is that common for these? Appreciate every Tahoe video you release... a LOT.
Great videos! I will be changing mine for sure. I looked all over the the clunking! I have an 03 yukon... Not sure if you can do a video about the rear climate control. But mine is malfunctioning. I'm trying to diagnose it
Think I've been hearing this, too. I'm about to do a super customize overhaul on my 03 Suburban. Thanks for this. Just had an alignment but it's still a touch out. Maybe I have the same issue you have at end of video
Little late but I'm going to do this to my tahoe not sure if I have the clunking but I'm at almost 300k miles and I'm pretty sure this will tighten up my steering some
I'm going to replace both the upper steering shaft and the lower steering column bearing housing. The factory bearing housing is made of plastic and will usually start to get loose around 80,000 miles. Wolff Engineering (yes, 2 Fs is correct) makes a metal bearing housing that should last for the life of the truck. It costs around 3 times the price of the plastic housing but you only have to change it once.
Thank you. I just went to their site and ordered the bearing. My 2009 Express Van had 300,000 miles on it and I will likely keep it until the frame rots out from under it. The clunk is driving me nuts. I will start there. Then work my way down as far as I have to go to address this.
Hey man love what you do. We have pretty similar tastes. I have an 83 Z28 I was putting off replacing the carpet till I saw the last video with the Firebird. I also have an 02 Yukon Denali which is obviously pretty much the same as the Tahoe. I had a Tahoe till someone T-boned me and I loved it so much I got the upgraded version. Keep up the good content!
Surprised that you did not replace the Steering Column Bearing at the same time. It's the less expensive part and the easiest to wear out. AND, you were right there!
Need to replace the green bearing on my 05 2500hd 6.0 with 284xxx on the dash did the idler arm and bracket, pitman arm and new steering box and upper shaft was stupid and didn't do the plastic bearing steering feels amazing just got the annoying clunk.
People check that u joint on the lower shaft because on mine it's about came off like the cat and the bearings were shot and a buddy of mine had the same thing happen and his literally broke while he was going down the road and ended up rolling it down through the ditch so I would definitely check that even if you don't have a steering problem
I messed up I didn’t have my steering wheel stable now my steering buttons and airbag light are on .. how do I go upon fixing this . U mention some about it having a clock spring ? Nd wires
I bet you it was that lower shaft. I’ve changed the upper shaft, the bearing, and put the 2” exhaust clamp on where the bearing is and still have the clunk lol I’ve got the lower shaft sitting in the shop so I’m going to put it on there and hopefully that fixes it
160K miles on my 02' Tahoe and I've heard about this issue a lot......... but never once heard it from my truck. Still has light piston slap when cold, so yea......
@LsxMatt while you have that upper shaft off could you replace the steering angle sensor as well it looks like it might come off. Just not sure if you knew thanks
There are two T25 torx heads that come loose at the tilt joint. Take plastic cover off upper steering column where flasher button is. Start truck and turn wheel until you see them on top. Might were almost ready to fall out. I found them after doing everything else first.😖
there is also a revised green steering column plastic bearing that is updated. you can see it at the 6:23 mark. white one is the discontinued part
I’ve heard about the bearing but didn’t touch on it as the shaft alone fixed my noise. I’ll put a link for it in the description as well being it is a good idea to swap it out for a 100% fix.

I like the ointment suggestion. Hahaha. I have an 05 siverado "silvia", your tahitti vids are helpful for me. You give me good upgrade ideas. Thanks
I have an 08 Silverado and I've had this clunking sound just like you mentioned. I didn't really notice it until after I lifted it so I thought it had something to do with the driver's side strut. I'm definitely gonna be checking it out this weekend. Thanks for making this video.
Did you find the issue with the 08 Silverado.
Appreciate every Tahoe video you release... a LOT.
i have the same problem on my 02 still trying to find a fix
I changed the plastic bearing before the shaft. Fixed the problem. Kicked my ass tho. Bloody scene.
I wanna give you the like, but I want more Trans Am vids because that's what I'm wrenching on. Good Job, Matt.
I have a 2002 yukon and I'm looking at installing a steering wheel with buttons. Do I need any special fuses or wiring harnesses?
Just replace my intermediate shaft on my 05 escalade. I can't believe how silent it is when going around turns!
Exactly what I was looking for having the same problem this was very helpful thanks
Dude you are amazing thx I took my ext to three shops and dealer and no one had a clue what the problem was thx you so much
Surprised that you did not replace the Steering Column Bearing at the same time.
Cheapest I've found that part in Cali is $105. Bearings $22 a piece for upper & lower..but still better then hearing that clunk clunk....
Thanks for this vidio, l have an 06 Yukon XL, no clunky play or noise, Yet !
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻.
✌🏻🤘🌦 🇨🇦 😎.
Thanks for instructions, how to replace the shaft. I have the same problem, on my escalade esv.
From Russia with love
Great video! Working through some work on my 03 Tahoe Z71
Thanks!! Worked for my Chevy avalanche to.
People check that u joint on the lower shaft because on mine it's about came off like the cat and the bearings were shot and a buddy of mine had the same thing happen and his literally broke while he was going down the road and ended up rolling it down through the ditch so I would definitely check that even if you don't have a steering problem
Always a pleasure to watch your work...can’t wait for the T/A turbo....sssss videos!
I messed up I didn’t have my steering wheel stable now my steering buttons and airbag light are on .. how do I go upon fixing this . U mention some about it having a clock spring ? Nd wires
Ya gotta love the electrical tape bandaid! Great vid.
I bet you it was that lower shaft. I’ve changed the upper shaft, the bearing, and put the 2” exhaust clamp on where the bearing is and still have the clunk lol I’ve got the lower shaft sitting in the shop so I’m going to put it on there and hopefully that fixes it
where exactly do you put the 2 " clamp? around the metal part that has the white plastic piece inserted?
Great video! Love the camera work. I needed to figure this out so I can work on my vehicle! Thanks 👍👍
160K miles on my 02' Tahoe and I've heard about this issue a lot......... but never once heard it from my truck.
Still has light piston slap when cold, so yea......
Your Amazon links work still and please keep making Tahoe videos please!
I got my 2005 brand new and it clunked in the first year. Crazy part is I’m at 77,000 miles now and it’s the same sound
@LsxMatt while you have that upper shaft off could you replace the steering angle sensor as well it looks like it might come off. Just not sure if you knew thanks
THANK YOU THIS LOOKS LIKE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM I HAVE ON THE POS 2005 EQUINOX
I have a 02 Silverado you think I can put a 06 trailblazer steering wheel only?
There are two T25 torx heads that come loose at the tilt joint. Take plastic cover off upper steering column where flasher button is. Start truck and turn wheel until you see them on top. Might were almost ready to fall out. I found them after doing everything else first.😖
how do you take off the plastic cover off the upper steering column where flasher button is?
05 Silverado LS 5.3. In the description it says it fits but not when I type in my my vehicle on Amazon. I was assuming it was the same. Any info?
Another thing I will be replacing on my Tahoe, thanks.
Nice, going to be doing the same to my avy soon. Drives me nuts to hear and feel it on the wheel
