I watched this video when I was in eighth grade and I did my first 16 star run and got a 22:20. I’m now a recent high school graduate and my family has now disowned me. Thanks for getting me into this amazing hobby!
Nah cause if you got a 22:20 your first attempt you'd be a legend. That's not a real first time.
@@Chizypuff not “first attempt” but first finished run
Dude my first was a 51:30, and after a week a 28:07
22:20 is insane. My pb atm sits at 27:15 and I'm struggling hard to improve, gg on this massive achievement
22:20 first finished run 16 star, I call BS or you're one of the most naturally gifted players to ever play the game. Most players put 100s of hours into the game before getting times that good. And how come you aren't known in the community?
This is the best beginner tutorial I've ever found. Clear and concise.
Literally my only major problem with the video is the title, as getting a sub 20 with these strats is unrealistic. But other than that this is really really good.
@@quillllly Damn clickbait 😂😂
Right you'd have to do LBLJ, cannonless, shyguyless, and bomb clip into the top of the pyramid I believe but I think it will help me get to sub 30 min tho cuz I take a few tries at a lot of the quick strats
Bit old now new strats are quicker
Hi...its been 7 years i hooe u are doing great in ur life... pls respond
It will be quicker for me to get 70 stars rather than trying to catch that stupid rabbit.
Jordan Davies I've never agreed with someone more
I got him in a few minutes, but about 50 hours and 48 stars lol
Jordan Davies lmao i catched the rabbit in like 20 sec
No joke
Caught*
ATTENTION: Do not collect the star from Toad as your 15th, because the rabbit won't spawn then. You have to go into a load zone first then, to make him appear. Just wanted to say it ;-)
Ooooooooooooooh.... crap xD
Thanks mate, I thought I ran into a glitch...
what's a load zone
A zone where stuff loads
Foxx Blip Blip wow thanks bro everything is clear now
+Sehon13Ultd Can't you guess? it's something like some doors, paintings or whatever else, that makes the game load a different game area in memory. For instance, entering the castle doors makes the game unload the area outside the castle and load in the art, geometry, etc. for inside the castle.
Me: (Has never played Super Mario 64 before)

"clippy clip" "skippy skip"

that was really good for a channel with only 49 subs!
Underrated
Wat u mean he has WAY more than that now

This is a great guide! I am pleasantly surprised by the quality. I used to run sm64, but I decided to look up a few guides as a refresher because it has been a long time. This is very quality.
WHAT. KICKSLIDE? I've been playing this game for over 20 years, i've done countless runs of it, i know all sorts of glitches and exploits and shortcuts and movement tricks and so on, and this is the first time i've ever seen mario do a kickslide. I had absolutely no idea that was in the game somehow. I've never pressed those two buttons together but i've done an uncountable number of long jumps, the other button being less than a centimetre away...
HOW?!!?
i immediately went to test it and it was right there the whole time and i've literally never done one until now this is ridiculous i'm in disbelief.
a game that i thought i'd learned the vast majority of the movement tricks, and then along comes a basic move that isn't even a trick that i've been completely unaware of the entire time.
this is such a weird feeling
BoxHatKey I had learned said trick when I was eight...
WN Games Who cares?
you are bad at life huh
you can breakdance, if you do this while not using analog stick btw
It's the movie Mario's dash attack in Smash Bros is based off of
I speed run mega man 2 and X and I literally just got an N64 and immediately ordered Mario 64. Thanks for the video I look forward to practicing the tricks you’ve taught us.
me: can't even do the bomb clip
n0hbuddy Sadlife
i once did it but I FORGOT TO JUMP AND USE UP AND I LOST THAT I WAS SO PISSED!
I managed to pick up the bomb when it was bloated. But to use it to move towards the gate and clip through it? Not in a million years...
Juan Pablo Fernández Morales Me too,i was panic dan frightened that time
I can do sblj lol
So... Many.... A Presses...

Definitly.
Real nice and concise video! Love the fact that there isn't any pointless filler material before the actual video starts. After watching this I booted the game up and finished my very first run in about 35-40 minutes. Honestly I swear controlling that owl in Whomp's Fortress is harder than most of the actual speedrunning tech in this run.
Late reply, but there are two ways to skip the owl gameplay:
1) Long jump from the top of the tower from the second star
2) Do a precise triple jump into a wall kick at the platform closest to the cage (usually used when getting the red coins)
I did my first speedrun of this game, i got 43 minuets.
do you use a emulator and if so, what controller you use? Just curious bcuz i might get to this speedrun
Oliver Lundström nope, played on a real n64.
Oliver Lundström Idk a whole lot about the best emulator for speedrunning, but you would want something that has no slowdowns, very little lag, a very accurate emulation, and i assume that controller would come down to your own preference. You will have to do a bit of tweaking to any emulator to get the ideal performance. Two of your main choices are Mupen64plus and Project 64. Project 64 is compatible with more games, but has bad sound quality, and it is more user friendly. I believe mupen64+ is more customizable. You will have to do a bit of research though, because i don't know a great deal about which emulator is best for speedrunning.
BlazeItGaming "idk a whole lot" :D you did and thanks man!
Oliver Lundström np
Thanks for the tutorial! I've benefited a ton. My first runs of these categories would be upwards of 50 minutes, now they're almost sub-20 minutes. Thanks again
Thank you for finally explaining why you're supposed to ground pound right as you grab a star. I've always thought it a pretty strange rule that everyone just seemed to accept, it's nice to finally know exactly why it is!
I'm going to sub in the hopes that you make more interesting videos like this. Any game is fine, I just like these informative videos.
"To get this easy star" took me 10 minutes
How did you do that easy star. It’s the only one I still can’t do lol
Not gonna lie he’s right it’s easy I did it first try.
@@chipotleiscoolchipotle5408 same, I don't get why some people find it hard
Ole I agree it’s just an angled side flip and a wall jump.btw I lowered my pb to 27:57.
@@chipotleiscoolchipotle5408 Nice, I'm still stuck at 30:36 lol
I started off with this tutorial, now have a 17:02. Every beginner should watch this tutorial
Mario 64 creators in 1994-95: "Look at all these great levels we designed! This will give gamers HOURS UPON HOURS OF FUN GAMEPLAY!"
Speedrunners: "Here's how we can skip 50 levels and finish the game in under 20 minutes."
This guide is so helpful, I’ll be going from 2 hours on the 30 star route to so much shorter, great tips!
0:09 Write that down
7:00 - Akira's triple jump over the wall blew my mind when I saw that run recently. I didn't think there could be another level to grabbing that particular star
Wow, somehow I never realized that you could speed up while bomb clipping by holding forward in the air, thanks!
I would never try a speedrun because I think my anxiety would make me smash the screen haha. However I enjoy watching these so much. This is a great tutorial
Great tutorial! I can tell this was made in 2015 based on how many times he says, "swag."
I got my first sub 40 mins because of this tutorial THANK YOU SO MUCH
what a fantastic guide, been looking of getting a sub 30 16 star run, to get my feet wet but most beginner tutorials don't explain the simple stuff. love the video
I can't wait to use some of these techniques
I got about 35 minutes in an unplanned 16 star run a couple years ago, but I knew absolutely none of the non-MIPS-related glitches well enough to try them, and I wasn't very well practiced.
It's probably my proudest achievement in the game, or it will be, until I absolutely smash that record with these new techniques
Thanks for the guide! After a few runs my PB is 24:45
FINALLY I HAVE ASCENDED! never thought I would beat a 16 star run in under an hour! thanks so much you have earned a sub from me!
This was a great guide, thanks for the time you spent doing this. Also, the bunny clip was MUCH easier than the SBLJ to 0 star, thanks to that trick I can finally speedrun this game in 16 stars. Thanks a ton!
7:22 "press B to torture him"
advocating Toad violence, unbelievable
Sad that this channel is inactive and have such a low subscriber count! The content is great! Its better than most popular channels :)
Such a great tutorial. Thank you!
Wow, thanks for the vid! I have spedrun this game before, but today I had trouble with my BLJs. I had no idea that you had to hold Z for the BLJ, and it's improved my running alot!
This was a great first step for me and i’m convinced it would take me months to get the 21:15 PB i have now had i only been able to use other resources
I am so proud of Doug
To save a couple seconds, when you're clipped inside the door in the basement with mipps picked up, face the room opposite of the 30 star door and you can clip thru the door to the 30 star door room without having to enter the door and pick mipps back up. It only saves about 3 seconds, but it's so much easier to do it this way. But if you face towards the 30 star door when you attempt to do this, you'll clip into the room you were just in. Believe me, it's a lot simpler than it sounds.
Down to 21:58 right now. Getting better and better with each run. I don't take this route entirely anymore. I go for shyguy in ssl. I also go for left side tjwk in bits.
You started my speedrun career. Thank you my man.
9:07 It is also possible to do a double jump and hit the very edge of the wooden ceiling and you'll warp to the upper room where the pole leads
pole glitch lol
Bro, thanks to you I am able to complete sm64 in less than an hour. Thank you so much.
But we can collect Watch for Rolling Rocks in 0.5 A Presses by becoming QPU-aligned after doing some scuttlebug transportation after you humbly reject a scuttlebug jamboree, before TJ Henry Yoshi builds up speed for 12 hours.
around 9:50, no it's not the only way, you can go into dire dire docks and exit the level, or you could reset or get a game over, so it is not the only way, just the fastest
great tutorial, great game!
It is thanks to this video that I started speedrunning and getting 19:38 16 Stars and I will be forever grateful for this.
Thank you ♥
Bro, thank u. Today I did a 16 star speedrun in exactly 35 min. And I'ts all thanks to u. :)
Ah yes, I love stuff recommended to me 4 years later.
Idk why
This video is incredibly informative. Amazing!
Why doesn't mine look like that?
Woo 50 minutes! Thanks man!
This is quite an impressive guide! Suprised I didn't find it sooner.
In cool cool mountain the first trick is easier if you:
Face the camera so the ledge is to the top right
Double jump off and hold up-left
Once Mario starts yelling, double tap c-left (KEEP HOLDING UP-LEFT)
you can now time your kick more accurately
The way you play this is like art
Shoutout to you in any of my future videos and streams related to speedrunning!
Got 32 minutes, not disappointed but also not very comfortable with it. Great vid!
Thank you for this video! I just started speed running this on stream and this helped me out alot!!
I DID IT! I DID MY FIRST SPEEDRUN!! please don’t make fun of my time I’ve never beaten this game before and the jumps and glitches were hard.. my time was 3 hours flat
Nice
MoreJam: The current record sits at 15 minutes and 29 seconds
Kanno, SliperyNip, WeeGee, Green Suigi: Hold my beer
When I was clipping MIPS into the door, I accidentally clipped him through the wrong door and then I had to reset, god I’m an idiot
I DID THE SAME THING
I forgot I commented this lmao but I’m a lot better now. I have like a 24 minute time now
@@wuteverfloats lmao I figured you got a lot better since then, but I did the same thing too
@@wuteverfloats I'm running on a Europe version and I can't get my time any better then 28 mins :(
@@insanabillity If you can get your hands on a Japanese version, or American version, your time should lower by a lot since the European version is MUCH slower. So if you need to I would recommend try running on an emulator to be able to access American, or Japanese whichever you prefer. Emulator is still allowed to be submitted to speedrun.com so don’t worry.
I've did my frist try yestarday... 2 hours + omg, that's quite hard
28:19.43 Not bad for first run :D But i trained the trinks before and I am also used to this game.
Okay, I had my doubts when I saw this title and while it started out okay there are still some things in here that bug me.
Firstly, when you press R to enter the castle, don't hold anything on the stick, this way the camera will turn all the way meaning you only have to hold up to LJ. What's shown in this video is you holding the stick in some way and making it so the camera doesn't turn.
Secondly, as of October last year cannonless has a setup and is consistent. This star replaces the slide star in CCM resulting in a time save of ~13-15 seconds depending on movement and such...and yes the setup is easy.
Thirdly, although small, is that the common way to do basement is SSL->LLL->HMC. While I don't know the times comparing SSL first and LLL first, I'd say it's fair to assume that SSL first is fastest as that is what people did originally (I assume it was timed, although again I'm not sure)
Another problem I have is that the bully star in LLL is not what beginner's should do as the talon star in SSL is easy to learn and is 4 seconds faster I believe.
For Mips, putting it down when you turn around at the first door is pointlessly slow. If you face towards the camera (away from the 30 star door) and then jump and hold down, you will jump backwards with Mips still in your hands through the door...and for the 30 star door you should also hold Z to clip through and hold Z to jump through to avoid the text.
As for BLJs, they're not just be aligned + spam A as fast as you can at all. There's more to it than that, can take some time to get and will not be consistent at all.
That's pretty much the main issues I had (other than some poor movement options shown throughout the video, however I would advise new players to watch videos of the single stars to copy the movement done in them for that anyway so that's not so much of an issue as movement wasn't the main idea of the video). Other than these things, the video was okay.
GothicLogic yeh thats what i thought too! This guy clearly doesnt know anything about the game. Probably just used save states and when he got the tricks simply moved to the next ones. There was so many tricks that were executed poorly. I guess he couldnt even beat the game under 30 minutes
feel free do your own!
GothicLogic this was just meant to be a simple run to get you a time that you are happy with
Zerex89 These techniques he mentioned aren't that hard to do by beginners
Gothic with the 4+ year knowledge :O
if you are doing this is an emulator on mac, download open-emu because that has a feature to enable "Debug mode" and enter other cheat codes. In debug mode, you can see debug features like the speed, when doing a BLJ, you can see how much negative speed you have build. I think the speed is more than -1000 so it is gonna be really hard...
Just started learning and this is really helpful. Thanks a lot!!!
Hey, not sure if you monitor this page anymore as you haven’t uploaded any videos since this but if you do I’m very glad you did make this. I have watched this video many times now and I want to thank you as it has helped me a lot as a new player starting out
Very helpful. After a month, I brought my time down to 28 minutes!
You don't need to use the owl to get into the cage. triple jump from the floating island right beside it and wall kick off the cage and hold backwards until u land into the cage.
Owlless is pretty hard, harder than any of the other skips in this beginners guide. No shame in using the owl until you practice enough
cough, beginner, cough
Logan Cunningham exactly, that is who this guide is for
Trevor which is incredibly hard and saves 5 seconds so no
Owless wasn't a thing back in the day. It was discovered in 2016 and this video was in 2015
Thanks dude, did my first run. 36 minutes for now :)
This was really helpful! It gives me a good start to development my first speedrun. Thank you. : )
Ayo I got a 48:48 after 2 days of trying. Haven't played this game since I was 12. Thank you
Decent Guide, I made the backwards jump work after 2-3 min. after watching this.
Thanks for the help! With my first speedrun i got 32:34 seconds and second 26:40 (with ofcourse resets between)
Sweet video man, I've been grinding runs for my first time & my PB so far is 26:58.28!
JakesBRjust my PB is 34 minutes I've been practicing and trying to find a route faster.
Facehunter2003 there is no point in finding a faster route with a time like that. keep practicing until you get under 20 minutes, then I recommend switching to a new route
I just got 31 minutes!!! Trying for sub 30 minutes, thank you for this
I'm having trouble with the part at 8:18 where you glitch the rabbit through the door. I can successfully get myself halfway within the door, but when I turn around, I can't pick up the rabbit again. I'm using the Project64 emulator.
Flexico Crux That happens quite often. It happens when you pressed Z too close to the wall so Mips is behind the wall. This can also happen randomly sometimes. Either hold up and jump to clip out of the door and try again or jump around a bit until you grab Mips.
Thanks! Lots of help! Loved this video and subscribed!
Thanks for the amazing video! I hope to start speed running one day. Do you have a tutorial on how to set up recording speed runs with the times, so it will be official? Thanks!

Cards my first day and I got all of em down XD.... but.... my video... poor video.... one didn’t stop recording... so I had to end the task... 😭😭😭😭
You did dory in hmc and boil the bully in LLL where I struggled to do cannonless and shyguyless in SSL reliably.. I'll try your way. My pb is 30:25, just trying to get sub 30m and then I'm gonna keep trying to get SBLJ down
"Congratulations you're out of whomps fortress!" *cough* for the first and the last time since you wont be getting out of here again *cough*
you should make more of these for other popular speedrun games
We miss you dude where are you!? 😭
can anyone explain me how to do the hazy mazy cave walljump (second star in hazy mazy cave)
HUGELY helpful video, thanks homie!
Really nice tutorial you put together there I subscribed!
Thanks so much! I used this tutorial and I beat the game in one sitting.
Thanx dude i subbed to you. You are so concise and helpful. But I can't do the longjump with stairs thing, the bomb clip and the stairs kick A and B
1st run: 53 minutes
2nd run: 30:17
3rd run: 25:47
Wow, I improved really well!
everything about this video is great.
7:50 how do you suddenly go from 13 stars to 15? I at the same point but I'm missing 1 star for the bunny
you have 11 stars. then you get 3 stars in hazy maze cave and one from toad. toad appears in that room when you have 12 stars. after that you should have 15. make sure to get the toad star at 12 or 13 stars, not 14. Mips only appears when you have 15 stars and reloaded the area. When you get the 15th star in hazy maze cave the area will be reloaded after you got 15 stars and mips will be there.
You don't need Mips to access the second Bowser fight as you can backwards long jump on the stairs to clip through the star door and, if you're fast enough, bypass the hit detection box for Dire Dire Docks. If you don't bypass that then you just have to get the one star. With this information, you can beat the game with zero or one star(s) in a much shorter period of time if your execution is good.
this is a guide for a 16 star run
that trick is incredibly hard and this is a turoial for 16 star
So I have taken this guide as an inspiration to try speedrunning and I got from my first 42-ish minutes down to 33:06. I am wondering however, is there perhaps a faster way to get the caged-island star in Whomp's Fortress or is using the owl the definitive fastest way to get it?
I do two things differently. I go for the bird star instead of the bully. I also go for a triple jump wall kick in the final level to skip the arrow section
Using the Japanese version of the game gives you an advantage as peach does not read out the text at the start. Most speedrunners use this.
The final bowser fight took me 14 and a half hours to complete and I blame it on you
Thanks for the tips!:)
