- After doing numerous unconventional Super Mario 64 challenge videos, time to do probably the most conventional one possible as I take on Super Mario 64 and try to beat it exactly as Nintendo intended.

(haha get it? Nintendo + Intended = Nintended! Now THAT'S comedy)

Haha Tetra that's funny, you should be on Ellen
Boop
You already failed a minute in, Nintendo don't intend emulation >:O
:O How could he
omg ur right
Nintendo: oh you're using an emulator? YOU READY TO DIE?
Well...
they intended you to play it on actual hardware with no emulation so...
CORRECTION: Nintendo Did intend it. See: 3D All-stars, which emulates SM64
I'm glad to see this one done! Pretty funny how so many of the stars are way harder the intended way
Hi!
Love your challenge videos
hey it's nathaniel bandy awesome
oh hi nathaniel bandy
Be harder if he did them in actual order like Nintendo intended. But Tetra wanted to be slightly lazy.
Fun fact: The toads in SMB1 were originally called "Mushroom Retainers" for some odd reason. It's possible the person who wrote the guide was somehow unaware of the updated name, although that would be pretty unlikely given that the name Toad had been in use since at least SMB2.
It could have been related to how they were trapped in the blocks in SMB1?
I guess that was actually a translation error, but that's just a theory, a book theo-
“Retainer” is also used at least once in the Mario cartoons, for what it’s worth.
At one point he shows a page with a "Toad's Tips" section. So the guide's writers were seemingly aware. Maybe they just wanted to be corny again.
@@robertanderson9447 You know, now that I think about it, the guide does refer to them as "Peach's loyal mushroom retainers", so maybe the writers used it as a title for higher-ranking Toads? Still a confusing decision nonetheless.
Beating sm64 as intended should be a speed run category
Agreed

You can only create a speedrun category if the rules are absolutely obvious
You know someone's a pro gamer when they consider beating a game the "proper" way a challenge

That was so jarring...lol
It might have said that in the guide and he is just saying it to see if we get mad lol

Yeah it was probably to see if we were annoyed
@Joshua A So close, yet so far.
Since the last boo was never mentioned, that star was ment to be impossible.
Miyamoto's vision was shattered when testers continued to demand that the star be made possible. Tragic.

_wait a minute_
That’s honestly the funniest thing about the video
It plays better with a proper controller.
@@GabePuratekuta
You
You mean like
The switch controllers?
Or was that a jab at the N64 controller, because lemme tell ya, most people who say this have definitely never played Super Mario 64 on the original console.
@@AniMariBro I have played it on the original hardware and the controller is terrible.
Something's wrong, I can feel it.
"I've never seen or heard of anyone doing this, but you actually jump on the penguin's head and ride him."
That's the only way I've ever known how to cross that bridge. Ever since I was a tiny child. And I didn't have a strategy guide or the internet or friends that played it as well. Yet if you asked me how I figured it out, I really don't remember. Especially when getting on the penguin's head can be a struggle sometimes. Maybe my brother did it or told me.
That's just how the economy works
That's the only way I've ever done it and it's always confused me when I see people try to walk next to the penguin.
I've also only ever done it this way
I'm with Tetra on this one, I thought the intended way was running behind the penguin as he tries to juke you. This blew my mind!
The perfect way to play Mario 64
No because he didnt do the stars in order. He tried to make a loophole so he could still speedrun
We are afraid that the nintended way of playing Super Mario 64 may be replicating the experience 0 Star is known for

The writer of the SM64 guide is an absolute wordsmith!
The 90s and the early 2000s where weird, they really didn't know how to translate correctly XD
So what did we learn today?
That you should play games the way it's intended to enjoy it as much as possible, as well as learn things that we never knew about.
Wait a minute... Did no one else jump on the penguin??? I'm just too smart for society I guess
I know, I did that on my very first time playing on my N64 over 10 years later.
I knew
I always jumped on the Penguin thinking I was cheating. But I guess it was the intended way

I love how he's so unfathomably frustrated that he has to play a game the way it was supposed to be played

Nintendo: are you playing this on a legit n64
Tetra bit: yep
Nintendo: understandable have a great day
As Nintended.
I was the 64th like 😎
I did a WHOLE double take at hearing Tetra say “Mazy Haze Cave”.
I have the guide also. It always made me feel like I was in school when the teacher said "Make sure you read the ALL the directions first". Not how a guide should be, lol. The Majoras Mask guide was the same way. Those books are worth it just for the nostalgia and art, honestly.
14:44 my jaw is on the floor right now. I NEVER knew this was possible.
This should have been the April Fools special...
Okay, I never EVER expected to see a reference to AC/DC in a Nintendo publication.
They actually use a lot of puns and references in the guides.
Mad props to whoevz did that, they one truly cultured individual.
Yussss, happy to see other Nintendo titles get the same Nintendo Approved treatment 👏😍

20:12 remember when he was trying to beat the the game as intended? Me nether
I’m 31 years old… I’ve been playing this game since it’s release in 1996 and only TODAY, watching your video, I discovered that you can go through the snowman’s wind by RIDING the penguin 🤯 my mind is officially BLOWN
imagine doing something as intended
U mean nintended
haha
@SM64 Ultimate I saw you say this lol
No
That's cringe
14:25 Wait wait... I thought I Imagined that! I had a memory of either me or my brother doing that but I have literally Never seen anyone else do it so I just straight up thought I made it up! Oh my God!
Me: searches enemy’s in Super Mario
Google: This is a chain chomp

Wow, that's one impressive shot.
12:05 new lore, Mario is part lumberjack.
20:35 bowser definitely complaining about shitboxes for that throw
Crazy part of strategy guides was that they rarely directly told you how to beat the game. Mostly they would give you riddles on how to win. They "guide" you in the right direction but you still have to figure out how to get through everything. Yah fun lol
What the players guide really teaches you is that it's important to expand your vocabulary.
Heard the runescape login theme playing quietly and I thought it somehow opened itself on my computer in the background.
We talking old school RuneScape, because mood... The grind never stops 😅
14:04 *The manual for “Super Mario Bros.” on the NES refers to the Toads as mushroom retainers.*
10:38
ah yes, my favorite level,
MAZEY HAZE CAVE
mfw I pound the ground move
I grew up with the Nintendo manual for this game so some of these, especially the penguin one, made me just go "Wait...you didn't know that?"
I mean I'm sure he's probably using a faster method, but that he didn't even know it existed just baffles me.
Same, it always confused me when I would see Tetra walk next to the penguin.
I didn't have the guide, but I managed to figure out how to get the blast to the lonley mushroom star intended when I was like 6 and didn't know English, so I always get pretty pissed when Nathaniel over-hypes the difficulty of figuring it out and doing the cannon shot
9:51 No! We've already beaten that dead horse and we're not going to do it again. Now let's rewind.
14:06 Did you not know they used to be called that?
Why are we evolving, but backwards?! *HECKIN’ SPEED BOI*
Thats just how the economy works
i very much appreciate this guide having a school of rock reference
(15:50)
Tall, Tall Mountain also has an upward gust thing behind the start area that will blow you a good distance up the mountain
Using Hydrocity Zone Act 1 for JRB, that's one of my favorite S3&K tracks after Sandopolis.

Wow I can’t believe they used the mushroom retainer in the guide. They usually call them Toad or Toads.
Yeah, it’s crazy. I always though I “lured the eel out” but rather, apparently he just leaves and the hole being available is supposed to entice the player in.
That's just how the economy works
14:45 this shocked me, I had no idea this was the intended way, or even possible.
It's unsettling seeing this game look so good
Is there a "guide assisted" category on the speed run website? If so, I'm totally doing it.
I'm just now realizing that Torkdrift was supposed to be a boss version of spindrift.
That's funny. When I was a kid, I thought you were supposed to ride on the penguins head across the ice bride to avoid the wind. I had no idea you could use him as a wind shield. Lol
I always just stood on his head as well.
1:09 You Failed, You used the PC Port
lol
I really don't like the "graphics upgraded" mod
I do tbh.
I don’t either- and it’s not a mod, the game is being emulated on a pc
lmao that school of rock ref at 15:49
A retainer is a follower or a servant usually to royalty. Retainer is a good word to describe the Toads in this game
That mendella effect might be a video idea😏

1:50 the ball that bites
This was really fun to watch but seeing it done as intended is so weird xD
Also I wasn't expecting 4:50 and nearly shit my pants when the Eel loaded in. That model is horrifying.
If anyone else has the ad with the guy with the red beanie talking about poop. I think he hates his life and his ads cringy
I'm too early so imma just say chicken nugget
I did something similar recently when replaying Super Mario Galaxy. I only performed actions that were expressly taught to me by the game. Not even a long jump or wall kick was allowed until I found the relevant instructional sign.
It was pretty neat. I had to restrain myself from using the crazy maneuvers I usually do.
I love these kind of videos
This made me laugh a lot
I had my Super Mario 64 guide confiscated after bringing it to my state standardized test as it could be "used in another student's essay". I was livid.
@BAXTER MADORE Because we were told to bring something to do if we were finished testing so books were okay during the math and science portion but unaware 6th grade me thought it would be okay during the ELA portion. I was just getting into retro collecting and got the strategy guide a couple days before.
i always thought that you were meant to just do a sideflip up to get the star, i didnt even realise that a canon as there
well thats what i get for playing multiplayer with someone way better than me
Fun fact, in the earlier games, the toads were called Mushroom retainers.
I'm stuck at the penguin + snowman bit. All these years, I did not know I was to jump on top. Always assumed I was to hide behind it.
That's just how the economy works
14:36 Bull! I ride the Big Penguin's head all the time!
4:59 A lot of tries, hours of confusion, and finally noticing that the eel leaves the boat!
i love your editing it made me laugh :D
Glad you enjoyed it!
Inb4 "intended%" becomes a real speedrun cathegory separated from "glitchless%"
It would be a neat idea, admittedly, though rather limiting by its very nature.
@@HighPriestFuneral it's up to who completes the "intended" strats faster -- but you're allowed to use glitches to do the intended strats.
Can you beat super Mario 64 in Minecraft?
Bro, I thought hopping on the penguin was an unintended strat I discovered...
I’ve always done it that way. Maybe my older brother told me or something but I don’t remember that, I’ve just always done it that way
4:28 - I have NEVER seen that bird... :O
I've been waiting for someone to make this
I wanted this video for so long
It’s so cool the writer made an AC/DC reference. It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll is a song off their album voltage. A cool reference too a great band. Brilliant content as ever man, really fun to watch
Great song!
And thanks, appreciate it!
3:54 I’ve never done this Star with the cannon ever lmao
I think you should do a challenge where you try to time yourself to see how fast you can complete individual stages in Mario 64. The time ends when you get the last star of the stage. Then try it again to beat your personal best on that stage
!
I never knew you could jump on the Penguin in Snowman's Land. We learn something new every day
