6:21 The reason for this is because of the smoke particles. They only come from the Bob-Omb object itself, so it has to actually be in front of Mario in order to work.
Imagine being a speedrunner and also watching pannen's videos and then watching this to check if he got things right. That's me right now, might edit this after I'm done watching if I have to complain about things. (Edit: 3 minutes in and I have to complain about him getting the history of Any% wrong. Rip 31 Star run. [was Any% before using Mips to clip through the 30 Star door was known, that category died in 2004 I think so I guess just a minor thing]) (Second edit: kinda stupid for me to complain about it but the error with calling the 30 Star door the 50 Star door is just triggering me) (Third edit: as a 1 Star runner I am super triggered by calling Lobby BLJ (LBLJ) this weird thing mentioned at 13:37 . Ew.)
Not too difficult to understand. The game is programmed so that Mario can only go at a certain speed at least in the positive direction (in other words forward) and the walls will stop Mario because they are set to stop him up to a certain speed. So basically the way they programmed the game for example was if mario's maximum speed forward were 10 the wall was set to stop mario up to a speed 15 or -15 (negative meaning Mario traveling backwards). So if the speed mario can travel is capped at ten there is no way he could walk through a wall because it will hold him back anywhere between -15 and 15. However what happened in the programming was they failed to put a negative limit so if mario can travel backwards faster then -15 via the BLJ the wall won't stop him and he will clip right through as a glitch in the game code. A similar thing happens on the infinite stairs. The way they work is every step you go up the game adds one at the top, but when you get 70 stars this no longer happens. But since there is no negative speed cap if you go faster than the stairs can add in you will reach the top of the stairs. Sometimes you can add cheat codes to BLJ super fast and this will cause all kinds of weird stuff to happen in the game...Mario will be able to go where he was never intended.
Man IF ONLY UA-cam REALIZED HOW GREAT THE CONTENT COULD BE RATHER THAN FORCING CREATORS TO BE CONSTANTLY CREATING LOW QUALITY CONTENT POSTING 3 VIDEOS A DAY! 🙃

16:20 Basically the parralel universes exist as a result of how collision detection works in the game. Instead of having the objects themselves detect the collision, each object exists on a coordinate grid which the game uses to detect collision instead. With enough speed you can shoot over the borders of the gameworld, but instead of going out into the infinite, the coordinate grid instead puts you on the opposite side of the map, coordinate wise. Which means that while you are far away from the actual map without any textures, since the games coordinate based collision detection still works , you can still interact with each object on the map as if it were there.

Its funny to think about all these glitches as a programmer. Like a lot of the time we will just try to get the code to "work" so we can start playing with it before putting in all the safety mechanisms to prevent user error. Sometimes you will think of all of them and sometimes you will miss some. The concept is called edge cases. In this case they found out from the speedrunners and then made those fixes in the future games, which unfortunately make them less fun for speedrunning
@@katalysator3431 I remember getting there at ~20K subs, noticing the sub count & quality of video, looking for what else TC had made and finding... nothing. Yeah, this is a very unusual case.
I don't know if I can really articulate the weird feeling I felt watching this intro, but as a tiny little child playing super Mario 64 in my living room I never would have thought that 15 years later in the future with technology far more powerful than we ever could have thought back then, that there not only would be a popular speed running community for the game even still, but that I would be watching a video of a smart guy explaining the math and mechanics and code of why the game works the way it does. If you really want to know how this game works, watch Pannenkoek2012
Tbh I think its too bad that this dude didn't explain how the collision detection works like pannen did.
@@Dhalucario I mean, can you blame him? Pannenkoek2012 is an expert on this game with far more knowledge than Tech Rules.
The way I see it, this video is a good surface level introduction, while Pannenkoek2012 is the next step.
Therapist: Low poly Mario is not real, he cant hurt you.

Dayumn son! A sponsor on your 4th video? Congrats man!
(From a TASer) Nice video, and thank you for the shoutouts to Ukikipedia! There were some things you may have glossed over (50 star and 31 star come to mind), but overall the video was great! Facts were good!
TerminalMontage: Allow me to introduce myself...
I like how dire dire docks single handedly adds a full minute onto the speedrun
It's been waaaaaay too long since you posted! anyways, this vid is gonna be epic
I just speedrun your channel
I actually clapped when you explained the 1-key route.
So beautiful and awesome. Loved it!
I hope the algorithm finds you. We need more quality content like this!
The algorithm already found him. He literally got 100k subs with 1 video.
@@katalysator3431 I remember getting there at ~20K subs, noticing the sub count & quality of video, looking for what else TC had made and finding... nothing.
Yeah, this is a very unusual case.
The Algorithm makes some fascinating synth metal. Highly recommended artist.
The “you know which one” TAS run is the greatest thing i have ever seen.
"Today's sponsor is raid shadow legends" so how much was your soul worth?
Not seven thousand dollars
5:50 this reminds me so much of the fallingsand entity in minecraft
I think the BLJ would be harder if the game ran at 60fps…
I don't know if I can really articulate the weird feeling I felt watching this intro, but as a tiny little child playing super Mario 64 in my living room I never would have thought that 15 years later in the future with technology far more powerful than we ever could have thought back then, that there not only would be a popular speed running community for the game even still, but that I would be watching a video of a smart guy explaining the math and mechanics and code of why the game works the way it does. It was a weird glimpse back to my roots, a link to the past if you will.
Parallel Worlds or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Half A Button Press
i think i speak for everyone when i say that your explanation of the parallel universes was amazing and everyone loved it
16:15
But to answer that, first we have to talk about parallel universes
Dude! That explanation of the Parallel Universes was amazing, I understand it completely! A round of applause to you!
"Consistently holds the most active players over everything that's not a new release"
Team Fortress 2: Am I a joke to you?
Pannenkoek makes great stuff. Eveyone loves the rolling rocks vid but i love his explanations of each levels coin limit, theyre just fun watches
Now do OOT
Can't wait for GIM, wrong warp, and RBA explanations :)
Imagine every time he asks a question in this video, Bismuth busts in and is like
"T o a n s w e r t h a t, w e n e e d t o t a l k a b o u t p a r r a l e l l u n i v e r s e s"
will we be talking about parallel universes in this video?
XD terminal montage reference
Only if we do it with 0.5x A presses
@@GameFrostYT the terminal montage reference you are talking about is actually a reference of pannenkoeck.
@@GameFrostYT Skellux also
maybe if he talked about tas runs
I just know this dude is gonna become a legend
To answer this
We need to talk about paralel universes
