This video filled me with so much inspiration. I was so motivated that I quit my job and picked up speed running full-time on Twitch. Thank you, Squeex.
Dude honestly one of the best tutorials ive watched, makes me a little more confident to get my times better. Plus you were very kind about how its ok to make mistakes
I only recently got into actually attempting to run 16-star so I've watched a lot of these videos from a number of creators. This one has been by far the most helpful and also fun to watch. Thanks for taking the time to put this together and encouraging everyone to make those attempts on the harder tricks to save time, much appreciated :)
Since Simply is hosting a 16 star sm64 tournament ppl start speed running. I'm one of them and very thankful for your video! I like the motivation you try to transmit! Thanks a lot!
Great tutorial! Loved that you explained some of the finer details of this run, like the movement in between levels - other tutorials mostly explain only how to get the stars. 16-star is so fun to learn, having a blast.
Heyo! Might be a little late but I found another tip for canonless. After trying it hundreds of times and only getting it once, I looked at my controller inputs since I'm on EMU and realized the analogue stick range was set to only 63%. Once I set it to 100% (and checked the 'Real N64 Range' box, although I'm not sure what that is exactly) I was able to get Canonless pretty much 98% of the time and super consistently. Hope this helps other first time runners!
Downloaded an N64 emulator yesterday, mapped my Xbox controller to it, and I’m gonna use this video as a guide! Already got cannonless 4 times in a row so I think I’m kinda a pro :’) Just got my first Lakitu skip pog
This was an incredible tutorial. After having watched and practiced everything from your video I have done a few runs and recently have gotten a 21:34! Thanks, Squeex!
The fact that this is narrated real time with some extra demos, really well explained all the tricks, and still a time that is only double the CURRENT WR is amazing a truly great video and makes trying to run the GOD category of any speedrun really attainable, AMZING work my friend.
This is amazing! Thanks for breaking this run down, I had no trouble learning individual tricks, but I had issues putting them all together into an efficient run.
His professional voice is so different from his streamer voice. You would not expect this guy to be talking about showing his hog and raving about how the GOP is pog💀
Just started trying to speedrun for the first time yesterday and I wanted to do this one. The intro skip is still kinda 50/50 for me. I got the bomb clip down yesterday, I can pull it off 60% of the time, and now thanks to your video, I got cannonless down too. That one is definitely easier than the intro or the bomb clip. I'm gonna make sure to keep coming back to this video to get the rest down as well! Edit: It's been a couple days, and I've finally worked my way through each star getting down the strats. I do want to add that you should explain blj better because I was clueless on how to do those and had to search for another video. Also the Bowser 3 part that divides the men from the boys. Using the kick as a buffer to save your jumps is cool, but as I'm trying it, I keep diving instead of kicking in the air. As a beginner, I wish you explained these things in the video because it's a very well done video. I've been stuck for 20 minutes trying to kick in the air while moving forward, but I keep diving. I tried holding the stick in the opposite direction when I press the kick button, and that seemed to work, but it wasn't consistent enough. Also tried not touching other buttons and only kick and that didn't work either. How? How tf do you kick while moving without diving?
I know it's been a few weeks, but if you're still curious, mario will only kick instead of diving if his speed moving forward is slower than a normal run. There are a few exceptions to this, but for a normal jump into a kick or dive, this is the case! Hope this helps :)
As a squeex viewer I didn't struggle at all (this was extremely humbling) and I didn't get distracted by the attractive man on the side at all (I'm a compulsive liar) and this tutorial was very helpful (not a lie)
Hey man I caught you during a live stream and checked out the channel. I like the video, it's really solid and easy to understand with a little bit of your brand of humor. I'll be given this speed run a try myself at some point. Just for fun. Nice Hyrulean Shield coffee mug :)
Hey I watched this tutorial throughout and my pb right now is a 25:21, not great but I'm happy since I started speedrunning the game a week ago. Working on getting my movement nailed down.
Great tutorial straight to the point and named all glitches so i can easily look up other more indepth line ups thank you i shall now take on the challenge of learning this route and completing it gl me
Just to set the record straight for anyone new: Squeex is 48 (almost 49) Squeex is a big fan of the hit show The Big Bang Theory (Bazinga) Squeex is a big fan of the hit anime Full Metal Alchemist (Don’t ask him about it) Tune in tomorrow for another 3 facts about our handsome and spry friend Squeex
ik im late but ty so much for this video man. for years ive wanted to learn mario 64 speedrunning but ive always thought that it would be too hard. this tutorial has really been helping me learn a lot ot these tricks. thanks man
ive seen toast use this for his run in a vod. started myself 2 weeks ago, getting a good help of watching speedruns for some time, and id say there are good amnt of mechanical skills. some things ive noticed in this vid, if i compared to all ive seen so far. this is a good tutorial, dont take it wrong pls. firstly the cannonless star. im sure you know all the options how you can approach this. but what i want to point out is the last part, where climb down the plank, up again, while moving the cam. the order in what you presented her is not relevant to my knowledge. you can do the cam even beforehand. there is no strict rule. secondly there are stars like in SSL birdy, where there are different ways to get over the sandy dunes. the second star can be done easily with a triple jump from the start, you dont have to walk away from the grey platform at all. ive watched runners comparisons, and what came to my eye was how everybody has his own preferences. so personally i would show different cam options, not say to turn the cam right here, or straight. cause sometimes the complete opposite is more ideal to see the proper/ distance position in a side view e.g. in the snow lvl, i believe its ccm, you dont have to manipulate any camera at all. if you hold down slight left, double jump, at a certain point hold towards the wall, you will automatically land on the lowest platform using a kick at the end. you can use the cam, but it is not neccessary. the rest of the video is fine, and i hope this essay is okay to post :)
hey thanks so much for the input, appreciate the time you put into this. The reason I was so particular about the instructions is because the methods in the video are some of the faster ways of doing the stars. Instilling these habits early on help when you are trying to get a sub-20 or even better. Totally understand the preferences in terms of camera and things like that. Happy Running!
"Markiplier Let's Play route" was the most brutal thing I've ever heard anyone call a section of a level in this game, and it makes me want to reset every time I choke into it having to safemode it. Thanks?
I think this kind of video is really helpful. I'm a little confused as to how this tutorial is faster than your actual speed run but maybe this is spliced, like your 70 stars
Thanks for the tutorial! I heard people meming that this one isn't as great, but so far I think it's really well explained (aside from some mix ups with names like sideflip/backflip). I have watched so much mario speedrunning stuff, and it's interesting to watch, but i haven't played mario 64 since when I was a kid. I'm gonna boot up Mario today and try to follow this tutorial :)
I recently started speedrunning and I have to say your tutorial has helped the most. While most runners try to demonstrate the correct way of doing things, by simply doing the opposite of everything that I see you do I've been able to advance extremely quickly. Keep up the great work sport!
I’ve never seen squeex be serious for more than 2 seconds
It's so weird it feels like a bit
I came to this vid for sm64 16 star strats and I left this vid believing in myself
This video filled me with so much inspiration. I was so motivated that I quit my job and picked up speed running full-time on Twitch.
Thank you, Squeex.
Unironically the best simple 16 star tutorial out there. Love your sense of humor and the explanations for tricks are actually really solid.
so glad i found this video. im about to start my speedrunning adventure and this video easily breaks it down. thank you
1 year later what is your pb
3 years later. What's your pb
bro i watched this like more than a year ago not even knowing he would become one of my top streamers lol
i did the same. didn't even realize it was a squeex video until recently
Can't believe he made it out of Whomp's in this one.
Dude honestly one of the best tutorials ive watched, makes me a little more confident to get my times better. Plus you were very kind about how its ok to make mistakes

Finally someone who explains tech instead of linking you to another video

You created a resource so powerful, so succinct yet thorough, you basically forced me into running this category,
Hey man just wanted to say ever since I started taking this advice my life has become progressively worse. Thanks for the tutorial, big thumbs up!
Great tutorial! Loved that you explained some of the finer details of this run, like the movement in between levels - other tutorials mostly explain only how to get the stars. 16-star is so fun to learn, having a blast.

Best tutorial I've found, thank you so much :)
Thank you so much for this. I've become wildly obsessed with attempting this as of two days ago and your guide is my favorite.
you're welcome! best of luck on your runs
i did my first ever 16 star run from this
Heyo! Might be a little late but I found another tip for canonless. This video is a must watch for new runners. So thankful for your detailed analysis and sense of humor to ease the pain when it gets challenging.
This video helped me complete cannonless on my first day of ever speedrunning today, appreciate the tutorial :)
This is so cool. I wonder if this guy has achieved the world record in 16 and 70 star runs.
I might actually use this but I don’t wanna spend the next 5 years of my life stuck in whomps
Just finish every run, best way to get over having red splits
what a delightful young man, wonder what he's gonna get up to on January 6th 2021?
is it real?
did he participate?
And to think he got off on a plea deal too. So much for "fighting" for what he believes in. Was quick to turn his back on his so called morality.
Cannonless is like Spongebob teaching Squidward how to blow a bubble

It's weird to think i watched this two years ago to learn 16 star and now i found him on twitch role playing as Mr. bean playing hitman
This was an incredible tutorial. After having watched and practiced everything from your video I have done a few runs and recently have gotten a 21:34! Thanks, Squeex!
np :) next stop sub 20!
The fact that this is narrated real time with some extra demos, really well explained all the tricks, and still a time that is only double the CURRENT WR is amazing a truly great video and makes trying to run the GOD category of any speedrun really attainable, AMZING work my friend.

Practicing a sub 25 sm64 and a kickflip is how I let the world know im having a crisis at 27
This is amazing! Thanks for breaking this run down, I had no trouble learning individual tricks, but I had issues putting them all together into an efficient run.

Thanks so much man! I tried these tricks and got a 17:38 FIRST TRY

I came for a 16-star tutorial and got a motivational speaker instead.
the beard makes him look less bald
Consider becoming a teacher unironically, left this vid feeling so good about myself
Oh, Hey Squeex. I just Finished my first 16 star. Took me 50 minutes.
not bad
My first super mario 64 speedrun was 37 minutes, years ago. It's on my other UA-cam account same name as this account
Bro I'm actually dogging on myself for getting a 29, I just improved by 7 minuets today so I'm at a 22 almost sub 22

Great explanation of the route, but just to confirm we stop the timer when we grab the final star after 3rd bowser?

and id say there are good amnt of mechanical

compared to all ive seen so far. this is a good

firstly the cannonless star. im sure you know
all the options how you can approach this.
but what i want to point out is the last part, where
climb down the plank, up again, while moving the
cam. the order in what you presented her is not
relevant to my knowledge. you can do the cam
even beforehand. there is no strict rule.
secondly there are stars like in SSL birdy, where
there are different ways to get over the sandy dunes.
the second star can be done easily with a triple
jump from the start, you dont have to walk away
from the grey platform at all. ive watched runners
comparisons, and what came to my eye was how
everybody has his own preferences. so personally
i would show different cam options, not say to turn
the cam right here, or straight. cause sometimes the
complete opposite is more ideal to see the proper/
distance position in a side view e.g. in the snow lvl,
i believe its ccm, you dont have to manipulate any
camera at all. if you hold down slight left, double
jump, at a certain point hold towards the wall, you
will automatically land on the lowest platform using
a kick at the end. you can use the cam, but it is not
neccessary.
the rest of the video is fine, and i hope this essay
is okay to post :)
