Death can come at any time and some of us reason that you may as well have as much fun as possible. Anyway personality variations are normal in social animals like us, and the theory goes that they are there as an evolutionary beneficial mechanism for dealing with changing climates. So if there's lots of food around the more sedentary individuals can make the most efficient use of available resources but if those same resources become scarce due to drought then those those restless individuals who felt the need to wander off to roam would have qa higher chance of finding a place which happens to have more abundant resources elsewhere. Anyway my point is that rationality doesn't really come into play when risk taking so being all self congratulatory is somewhat pointless, you were simply made that way and have little control about it. Not everyone can be a hunter, some also have to gather.

Good investigation, but I think we're tempting into blaming currents or drowning whenever sharks attack. These things can see in the water as well as we can on land; they know exactly when a body hits the water. It's like passing a breakfast buffet and letting the wind blow away the bacon instead of grabbing a plate.
@@nickmitsialis McCallister bled to death.. this is anything but a swift exit. Also a very low probablity that Stoddard simply drowned on the spot. This was a predatory attack through & through. At about 1015 hrs, a resident of Paradise Cove observed “a heavy boiling and thrashing in the water out past the kelp beds.” The water commotion was west and south of the USCG buoy. They reported; “a lot of splashing water and a churning of the ocean, like a whirlpool, maybe 15 to 20 feet [5 to 6 m] across. It lasted about 5 to 10 minutes, then stopped, with all going quiet in the water.” Ventura County Coroner Warren Lovell, with the assistance of investigators Jim Wingate and Mitch Breese, determined the following: “Tamara McAllister died from exsanguination, the result of massive tissue loss to the upper left thigh and a traumatic wound to the upper right thigh that severed the femoral artery and vein".
@@Otech3stvo OK; I was under the impression a severed femoral artery was pretty quick. Also, my impression from reading Collier's report, the couple arrived at that buoy AFTER the resident saw the disturbance in the water---an amped up white shark for sure but was it territorial or feeding? Guess we'll never know.
@@THEBEARDEDTOOLGUY Unfortunately sharks don't seem to be intimidated by size. They feed on whales. They've been know to attack boats. August 1993 Channel Island National Park, California, A great white estimated to be 22 feet circled and rammed a 65 foot boat several times.
Good lord!! I like looking at the ocean from a building on solid land, on a nice day and that is it! Born in San Diego, went to the beach a few times. Got as far as my ankles an freaked out at the sensation of the ground moving out from under my feet. Went again as an adult...nope! Admire the beauty, strength and mystery...respect the life it holds. Am amazed at the people brave enough to enter it - especially those that go out deep for fun or work...but not me!@@SHAWNEESKYWALKER
@@SHAWNEESKYWALKERIncorrect. Sharks do bump & ram vessels to get them out of an area, which is territorial just like they bump & ram each other to establish dominance. But they 100% base actions off of size & perceived threat or danger so being in a larger craft or boat is much much safer.
There are these giant 'eye' stickers you can now buy to put on your boards, kayaks, etc which are believed to have some (emphasis on 'some') effectiveness in terms of sharks feeling like something with big eyes is looking at/aware of them. If I was to kayak in the ocean (which there's almost no chance I would), I'd for sure grab some of these decals and put them all the hell over everything 😅
I wonder if any kayakers use them. Heard of using them on boards but the sharks not under and will not see them in most cases while most Great Whites hit kayaks from underneath. If it will work it will be the kayaks protected and not surfers.
Everything lovely, breakfast on the beach, and then... can only imagine how terrifying those events leading to their deaths were. Hope everyone's having a great weekend! 😄
Someone asked me what horror movie had the most impression on me as a kid....I said JAWS without hesitation....I've been freaked out about the ocean since. Sharks will be sharks.
Undoubtedly!!! I don't know who thought it was a good idea, but I saw Jaws when I was 9🥺🥺. It caused a lifelong fear of swimming in lakes and swimming at night even in our own pool!! I really don't even know why I'm at this channel😂😂 But Hal is so likeable🤗 You would actually have to point a gun at me to get me in or on the ocean🤣
I saw a doc on the effect of mimicking sea snake b&w stripes on wet suits. It seemed to be a deterrent. Maybe if the bottom of boards & kayaks were striped... 🤔
These two were friends of my older brother. I vaguely remembered Roy but not his girlfriend but he said that they used to come to the house for cook outs with all his other friends. He and all his buddies were students or recent grads at Pepperdine back then. I remember him being very upset one day, when I asked him what was up he told me about his two friends who had been killed while kayaking. What he and his buddy Tim told me while they were going through a case of Shaefer (a cheap corn beer popular with the students back then) as a mini wake for their friend was that Roy and his girlfriend liked to tie up to the kelp beds and have s3x in the water. Their circle of friends were pretty sure that's what happened. Can't say for sure but that was the buzz.
Now that makes more sense. They were both outside of their kayaks, the shark ate all of Roy, and just bit Tamara probably because it was already full after consuming him. And kelp beds are where sharks go to stealthily hunt.
I believe your story on the activity by kelp. Never limit humans on the range of odd, goofy, dangerous, senseless, risk taking and thousands of other acts most people don't think up.
My full name is Tamara.. this cat don't like the ocean no more 🤣🥺like really😏see you next time Mr.Hall🏌️😁 totally addicted to true shark stories though
I remember that night, walking thru the living room and hearing the news reporting this. I was horrified...I believe both were students at Pepperdine Univ. in malibu....
I had a dream last night where I was thinking about how Hal always says, "you are more afraid of those sharks than they are of you." I was thinking, he's right. What we need is something that makes the sharks afraid of us. So I made some kind of device, I think it put out a sound, that scared all sharks away. Whatever it was, it worked and no one who was wearing it was ever attacked by a shark again.
@@nedmerrill6228 Does that stuff work pretty well? I've heard of it, but I don't know much about it. I've also seen the bracelet things but I've heard they don't work.
Hey Hal, have you covered the Monterey Bay (?) kayak attack that was caught on film by a guy in his house/hotel. A boat rescued the kayaker. It seemed to take forever, it was so hard to watch.
Not sure. The creepiest i have seen was a shark 30 yards from the kayaker with the kayak maybe tangled up on it then the shark goes right back to the kayaker. Crazy.
Nah………..I’m a chicken! Give me a swinging pool, any day. I love sit sit and watch the sea, but swimming……nope!Just nope! These fish are giants!! 90% of us simply have nothing to compare this to. Now imagine a fish this huge with its mouth open and LOTS of teeth!!
Love all the comments. At the beginning very constructive criticisms to improve the show to what it is now. The whole community participation makes this better than any Shark World Investigators or reporters as there are thousands of people watching, thinking, then giving input on these attacks. In the case of science Transparency and large pools of participation is better than how it is usually done. Ill take HDavid Baldridge over any in shark attack research
Don't inflatable kayaks have a warning on them not to take them inito the ocean? I would never take an inflatable kayak in anything movinig faster or deeper than a lake.
Wow. That poor couple. Getting in the water on kayak, ship, board...whatever, is a toss of the dice. This couple should have been ok but, they got in the water. The dice didn't favor them that day. RIP
I recall hearing John McCosker describe this attack years ago in a documentary. Unbelievable. I also remember him stating swimmers and surfers attacked by sharks are often saved by friends, or other people nearby. Scuba divers, abalone divers, etc. on the other hand are predated. His explanation being there is often no one nearby to save them.
I paddle a surfski sometimes a bit too further offshore than it's comfortable, but yeah all it takes is a little bump from a shark and you're in the water.
To this day there is still no death record on Roy Stoddard. Tamara McCallister is listed of course. I'd think that he'd have a death certificate almost 40 years later.
Or they tied their kayak together when they saw the great white shark. I’ve seen lots of kayak fishermen tie up to each other when they see a large shark around. I doubt they tied up to each other because of the waves, that would make paddling your kayak much tougher. No doubt they saw the shark and tied up to each other to appear bigger but this time it didn’t work.
Just one more reason I don't mind living in the desert! Don't get me wrong, I've been swimming since I was 6 months old and LOVE the water I grew up in west Michigan. However, the more I watch these (and I've always been interested in the ocean) the more I may never dive or snorkel again! LOL Yikes! I'll just stick with the salt water tank and call it good!
Roy was our tenant and friend. They left from our beach in our kayaks. A strong santa Anna offshore wind came up and they may have been blown out to sea. The shark did not bite Tammy’s kayak, sharks ram bouys from underneath to try to knock seals off of them, and the crack in the kayak was from it buckling from the impact.
Another great multiple victim Show Hal. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈 You're correct in saying that a shark knocking somebody off a board or a kayak and then biting them is so rare, it's almost unheard of. Sharks don't hunt humans so this is very odd. And, like you said we don't know if all six bites to Tamara were from the same shark because she floated out in the water for a day. We also don't know that the shark that bit Tamara is the shark that took Roy.
I was attending UCSB at that time and remember that attack. Horrible. I always understood that at the time a great white attack so far south was very rare.
Hmm, so shark attacks are rare. Plus, getting bit by a shark after it attacks a kayak is rare, apparently. Terrible incident. People swimming in the ocean is extremely inefficient, compared to what's hunting them. A kayak is far more efficient but still not enough.
Was fishing about 2 months ago in my 12 foot kayak and looked down to see a 12 foot tiger gliding right under me. Made me feel real small. The girth was insane.
This one gets my attention, I fish out he yak and most of the time got feet legs overboard? Bottom fishing like to sit sideways so i can soak my legs - I do carry a couple tourniquets just in case -

Might work on some bears until it doesn't.

@davida.4933 I should be terrified and you too, fear is a survival mechanism. I still have some control in my car, out there in the ocean what control do you have?

@SofaKingShit

@tiel_ Perhaps you have some control but what about the drunk driver that suddenly veers into your lane?
This attack could have easily fit right in with any Jaws movie. Two young lovers go kayaking and all that is found are the kayaks tied together with evidence of a shark ramming it from underneath and the poor girl's bitten corpse. And Roy never seen again.
People also tie kayaks together when they are being stalked by a shark to appear bigger and hopefully prevent an attack. Doesn't always work.
I would just not kayak in the ocean. Problem solved lol
Your theory is correct. I kayak and there is no way you tie up to another kayak because of waves.
They do the same in rivers that have large Crocodiles in them. Pull the Kayaks together. That also doesn't work all the time.
Call that shark one eyed Jack after that, see if he likes kayaks after that. .
@@HeyImDateMike nobody goes into the water expecting to get attacked, people don't jump out planes skydiving n expecting there parachute to malfunction n hit the deck. Just people doing what they like to do, just because you wouldn't go into the ocean as if that makes you smarter than them, it really dont
This story is the creepiest to me. God can only imagine the nightmare they both went through the last 10 minutes of their lives.
It was probably quick! McCallister's Kayak was struck from below and she struck her head as she was thrown from it--according to Ralph Collier, there was blood and hair on the hull, The shark was was quite large and moving quite fast; Stoddard probably drowned.
And per Collier, the disturbance was seen by a resident of Pacific Palisades (a VERY Ritzy neighborhood that overlooks the Ocean ) who was watching it: it was a large Coast Guard Buoy that sea lions liked to haul out on; and the seal lions were both very perturbed and the was water was very 'swirly'; the Kayaks arrived sometime after that. Looks like what happened was that McCallister and Stoddard arrived in the area where a large white shark was attempting to either feed or hunt, and it probably viewed their arrival as a rival attempting to 'poach' it's meal or horn in on it's chosen hunting spot. It objected vigorously.
@@daniellee5147 Either took a bite out of her, and he drowned and got washed away by the currents or he got taken after she got bitten.
Gess I couldn't imagine being in a 10 ft kayak and a 14/16 footer showing up 😳

Unfortunately sharks don't seem to be intimidated by size.
Sorry I'm late. I'm doing laundry. So far number of shark attacks in the laundry room = zero
lol glad to hear the laundry room is safe!
You must have forgot the kayak.
Just when you think it’s safe
🤣♥️
I hear they are attracted to fabric softener!
Thank you, Hal from South Africa 🇿🇦
Hey Hal thank you for the show! Love your shirt! Please keep the shows coming as I look forward to each one. Great show Hal
Hey thank you for these shorter videos. I don't have a lot of time to watch the longer ones. Thanks again I really appreciate it.
A kayak will flip over in a heartbeat. Being in one in sharky waters is beyond crazy.
Shark wanted muffins and coffee also.
If only he had just asked first!
this is by far the scariest one out of all the stories you tell
Shiet, I usually get creeped out by his stories. Hyped and anxious for this one now haha
Great show, Hal. One way trip in little boats.
A 13 inch bite is enormous. I measured it and it would encompass my knee all the way up to my hip.😫
That's my entire third leg! 😂

I've heard this story many times but Hal has given the most probable theory. ❤

Hey there, Hal! Very sad video. I can't imagine paddling a kayak and facing a GW! The fear....the fear...
The Horror~
Still as creepy as the first time i watch it, every time
I saw a doc on the effect of mimicking sea snake b&w stripes on wet suits. It seemed to be a deterrent. Maybe if the bottom of boards & kayaks were striped... 🤔
What a great start to my morning...another Sharks Happen video!
Thank you Hal.
Always glad to see another upload on one of my favorite channels. :-) period
Another great show hal all best from UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
WHAT COLOR WERE THE KAYAKS 🤔 I WOULDN'T BE IN A YELLOW ONE ?
Another fascinating show. Thank you, Hal!
When you're in a kayak paddling around in the ocean but basically a topwater lure what the hack is on people's minds😮
As you say, Hal, it was a very mysterious event.
Shark attacks are very rare. But then most people don't go in the water.
Sounds like the shark was very hungry and looking for a meal; shark ate all of Roy and afterwards was just too full to eat Tamara?
Maybe he just drowned and got eaten by happenstance , she was maybe the territorial hit and ..who knows . .?
This was my guess as well.
He probably got attacked because the shark saw him as a threat to its dinner.
Wow . That sucks .
This is as close to the real story as it gets.
I believe your story on the activity by kelp. Never limit humans on the range of odd, goofy, dangerous, senseless, risk taking and thousands of other acts most people don't think up.
@@toscadonnaPerhaps the shark was simply morally outraged.
Eating muffins on the beach? What the hell kind of beach was this? 😂
I have this crazy idea that they packed a breakfast at home and headed to the beach. Wild.
It's Malibu, probably why he drowned when out of his boat too long , some rich dummy. .

Guy above you says they tied up to get it on in the kelp beds . .

I like when said “never leave your life in the hands of a fish.”
Makes sense!
You'll have to go on "Shark Tank" and get your device marketed.
Lol
Aerosol shark repellent.

Another great episode Hal, and another reminder for me not to get into a kayak again (haven't been in one for 30+ years haha)
Luckily not too many sharks in Cullercoats in North East UK
Hey Hal, have you covered the Monterey Bay (?) kayak attack that was caught on film by a guy in his house/hotel. A boat rescued the kayaker. It seemed to take forever, it was so hard to watch.
Not sure. The creepiest i have seen was a shark 30 yards from the kayaker with the kayak maybe tangled up on it then the shark goes right back to the kayaker. Crazy.
Yep! That’s the one. Soooo creepy! Please cover it:). Thanks Hal! You’re the best!
We saw bruce in the gulf on a charter
That was my last time out there
Good morning Hal!
They had breakfast then went out to feed the fish 🐟
You forgot to say where in what country or coast this attack took place lol
California, Pacific Palisades, beautiful area.

Comment.
I’ve heard of do many kayaks actaked that you’d have to be nuts to put yourself in that situation
Frightening
1989. I wondered why this wasn't on the news recently.
Don't inflatable kayaks have a warning on them not to take them inito the ocean? I would never take an inflatable kayak in anything movinig faster or deeper than a lake.
Good Morning, Nice Day to go Fishing..
Don't do that anymore, we don't want to hear about you from Hal🙏🙏...
This is the guy they'd call in if life were a horror movie and there was a giant shark eating people. He'd probably also get eaten.
What?
Another great video Hal, have a great day 👍💥
This one has always interested me. Thanks for covering it on your channel.
To this day there is still no death record on Roy Stoddard. Tamara McCallister is listed of course. I'd think that he'd have a death certificate almost 40 years later.
Sad story.
Another great show Hal, thanks!!
Sharks do not like kayaks. RIP Roy and Tamara. Thank you Hal💠
Horrifyin. That shark had to huge.
They wuz maybe screwing a brother of a pal said. .
Yes, did most of my swimming in the summers in Lake Cecila in Baldwin
Roy was our tenant and friend. They left from our beach in our kayaks. A strong santa Anna offshore wind came up and they may have been blown out to sea. The shark did not bite Tammy’s kayak, sharks ram bouys from underneath to try to knock seals off of them, and the crack in the kayak was from it buckling from the impact.
Never heard of the bouys but makes sense
Love your videos, Hal, thank you ❤
Right before you said it, I was thinking the most logical explanation is him having jumped in to try and save his girlfriend. Sad situation.
Damn It!! Just when I had convinced myself that it was safe to go out in the kayak again... Thanks a lot Man!!!
Another great multiple victim Show Hal. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
You're correct in saying that a shark knocking somebody off a board or a kayak and then biting them is so rare, it's almost unheard of. Sharks don't hunt humans so this is very odd. And, like you said we don't know if all six bites to Tamara were from the same shark because she floated out in the water for a day. We also don't know that the shark that bit Tamara is the shark that took Roy.
Yep. A bunch of unknowns. I am most interested in how the 2 ended up in the water.
These stories are horrifying, but fascinating.
No survivors, but we had witnesses to the muffins.
Thank you, Hal!
Was fishing about 2 months ago in my 12 foot kayak and looked down to see a 12 foot tiger gliding right under me. Made me feel real small. The girth was insane.
