Last summer I watched all Hal’s videos. In April hubby and I went to the Eastern Caribbean on our first kid free vacation in 10 years. We had a great time, including a catamaran tour and snorkelling with turtles in the US Virgin Islands. It was amazing. But, I told hubby, no shiny jewellery, no spear fishing, no peeing in the water. Hubby didn’t know it, but I kept him between me and the deep water the whole time 😂 thanks Hal.

You jogged a memory of mine in one of your episodes about a book I had read when I was much younger. I remembered that the author had gone shark fishing and subsequently disappeared. I couldn’t piece it together until this episode. I went through a phase when I was younger where I read everything I could on sharks and this was one of the books. Thank you for bringing that up…

Great ending to this episode 🙂. Love this series!! I Started to learn about surf fishing on the Atlantic ocean in Ocean City MD from my Dad when I was 8 years old in 1967. We caught smooth dogfish, Sandbar and baby Mako sharks along with Blowfish, Kingfish, Bluefish and Flounder... My Dad passed on in Feb. 2022 at 99 years and 4 months old. He would have LOVED Sharks Happen!!! Keep up the great work!!

Fishing at a small lake in the UK. I was fishing for small fish with 4lb line on a soft rod. I caught a biggish fish that just ignored me. Other anglers had gone to the fishing lodge because a huge rain storm was coming. The swines stood in the lodge laughing at me as the heavens opened whilst the 12lb fish just wandered around the lake. I was soaked but landed the fish!

There was a guy who was actually rescued after spending 3 days inside of a sunken ship. He survived inside of an air pocket, and he had to hear the sharks eating his drowned ship mates inside the ship in the hallways and other areas of the vessel. When the rescue divers came, they had to scare off the sharks.

What happened with Mick Fanning wasn't an attack. The shark didn't try and bite him, it got tangled in his surf leash. There are 4 species of reef sharks. Caribbean reef sharks, black tip reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, and grey reef sharks. What that lady did to that shark wasn't necessary. It wasn't bothering anybody. That poor shark.

I jumped to the most recent just to comment. I love your unbiased analysis of each situation. Glad you started a database because some early videos you didnt categorize. Predation vs attempt to predate... is a great distinction. I also like that you speak on how sharks behave when they "mistake" "test" "attack", and not your word but "hunt"..... i, myself, have also noted that sharks "deliberately" hunting people have distinct different approach to those they are investigating or mistook them for something else.... its actually VERY clear. And the scientific community ignores this for the sake of conservation and deniability... sharks are way smarter than they pretend to give credit, and an investigatory bite can easily be fatal for us....

so wild. i literally just saw a video this morning of a tiger shark that was circling a drowned wild boar that got swept out to sea from heavy rains/flooding. it circled this thing so many times, countless times. it was just so interesting to see. the shark was so calculated and so cautious with legitimately every single move it made. when it finally went in for the first bite, it took the boar’s entire head off, and then it still continued circling so many times. i very highly doubt the shark had ever seen a land animal like that before and might never again, so it was just really cool to see the reaction and predation.

Tiger Sharks are designed so that they can cruise around, like a low-rider, and feast on crustaceans that lay buried in the sand! If you're familiar with boats, and know the difference between V-Hull, and flat-bottom-skiff, you can build an analogy: You have skiff sharks, like Mr.. Tiger, and V-Hulls, like the GWS. The V-hulls require more depth to operate in, and the skiffs can swim right up into you're knees, and remove a leg! Good job Hal! Love/respect.

I would just get a wet suit, and layer Kevlar on the suit till it was an inch thick, and resembled a military-grade, bullet-resistant-vest, If I HAD to surf. The forearms would be covered in spikes, and a gun (one that works underwater) would be welded to a handcuff, and the cuff would be fastened snugly around a wrist. The board would be Aluminium on the exterior, and plexi on the inside. BTW: Aramid fibers are buoyant, and would require a stronger shark to take you under!

By the way, as an Aussie, who doesn't live too far from Anglesea, I can tell you it's pronounced "Angle-sea" 😉

Back in the '90's and early 2K's I surfed Waddell Creek quite a lot. Beautiful place to surf. Never had an encounter. It is right next to Año Nuevo beach which is a seal rookery. Gorgeous coastline.

    Hal,
Long term watcher.Your videos are entertaining and informative. JUST to let you know youtube is not letting me access any of your latest videos.May,6 2024 was the easiest I could get.I watched your video about how youtube is screwing you on your click rate and money. There greedy and corrupt. And I thought they were better then some media outlets.
Anyway I feel for you and hope that you continue to make new videos on UA-cam.Because that's the only way right now i can watch you.
Hang tough my friend and give me he'll.
All my best, Jim D from Wabasha MN

Lake Pontchartrain is a full salt water lake. Alot mire salty than fresh, and they do catch baby bull sharks frequently. I caught a door mat sized flounder when i lived in Slidell Louisiana in an apartment right on the lake. Great fishing, lots of red fish too!!
