I watched a video from Reel Deal outdoors about shark attacks, and the host thought that modern people have lost their fear of sharks, because for the past 30 years, scientists have kind of made GW's outta be these gentle giants who aren't interested in eating you. And if they do, it's because of mistaken identity. He theorized that sharks are probably not just mindless eating machines, they have at least some intelligence and know the difference between a surf board as a seal. They are simply put: predators. They can and will eat you. Plus nowadays so many people have this entitlement where they think nothing bad can ever happen to THEM

They’re about as predictable as dogs, for example; especially certain types of bull terriers - they’re fine and placid, great around kids and very affectionate - until they suddenly bite and maul out of the blue for *no* apparent or discernible reason, (to us humans) and often with life-changing consequences.
Anything that has the potential to harm, whether it be a shark, bear, tarantula, dog or spouse, should be treated with the utmost respect - but even that doesn’t guarantee anything. They’re as predictable as the lottery. There is *no safe way* to interact with *any* predatory life form - there’s things you can do to make things ‘safer’ for yourself or others, but even those come with no guarantees. If you don’t want to get bitten, then avoid deliberately entering the personal space of anything that bites. 👍🇬🇧

I'm so glad you mentioned the Jack Smedley attack in Malta my father witnessed it he was in the royal marines and stationed in Malta , This was a well documented attack with many people witnessing it , My father said the fish was huge 20ft + and you could clearly see it in the crystal clear waters of the bay , He helped along with other people the guy out of the water who was in shock , In 1972 my father took us to Malta to visit friends and we went to St Thomas bay and my father related the story again.
It was no surprise that while we were there they caught and displayed a Great White that was 19ft that was patrolling around the Blue Grotto a big tourist attraction and no warning signs were on any of the beaches but all the locals knew that huge Great Whites were quite common around Malta.

I am not a resident of a coastal area , I am from Central Europe and therefore have always only been by the sea on holidays . When I was younger I always thought the Mediterranean Sea is " safe " . But after researching and looking to some vids on this channel my opinion now is that maybe it is " safer " than other areas in the world but still anything could happen . I just returned from the Mediterranean in Southern France last weak . I swam and occasionally did snorkeling . And although I didn' t went out that far compared to when I was younger I still had a sense of slight unease or atleast caution / respect when I was in the water . Maybe as far as the Med is concerned it is a bit exaggerated , I don ' t know , but anyways , now as an adult I have much more respect for the sea than when I was a kid .
Like I mentionend I don ' t live in a coastal area and if some more people from Europe , especially from countries on the Mediterranean Sea who live there had encounters or can tell a story of shark attacks or encounters in their area I would really like to read about it . Have a nice and safe day .

18:45 I’ve posted before about a friend who was sleeping on a paddle board and knocked 10 feet in the air when a bull hit his board from underneath. It never attacked when returned to his board. In the same bay, I was the last of five kayaks leaving a mangrove cove. A bull swirled beneath my kayak about five times but never bumped it. The swirling water was so loud that everyone ahead of me turned back to see what was going on. The water was churning and powerful. The girl guiding us said “Oh, that was a manatee.” The guys at the marina said it was a shark and that fishermen complained about a territorial bull in that cove. Terrifying! I’m definitely scared of sharks.

I had a situation that sounds similar regarding the bump. When I was about 10. A bunch of us were swimming in a place called Illawong Bay (a wide and very deep creek off Cowan Creek, Sydney). I was on a boogie board and swam out about 15m further than everyone else. All I remember is being thrown into the air, screaming like crazy and jumping back on the board and paddling in. I spent years wondering if it might have been something else (dolphin, some other big fish), but with it's partly freshwater location, the more I think back on it, the more I think it was probably a bull shark. Have been terrified of sharks ever since, but still get out for a kayak every now and then (head always looking around, lol).

I gave up surfing because of an encounter with a very large GW. Brushed against me and pushed me in the water whilst I was sitting on my surfboard waiting for a wave. It was then circling me. Windy evening just before dusk. Apparently beach had been closed because of shark hanging around a few beaches. I went down a side track and didn't see any signs. I was the only person in the water. I managed to get to shore and was suffering from shock. Some people saw the shark going for me from the rocks near the point. Some people put some towels and blanket around me as I couldn't stop shaking. The people that saw it said the shark was estimated at 18-20 ft.
All I could say is that it's head was much wider than my surfboard and I had a rash on my leg where it pushed against me. It took me days to stop shaking. It wanted to eat me and was just sizing me up to be sure I was an easy enough meal. People from on the point said the shark went straight towards me.
The beach was Avoca Beach, Central Coast, NSW, Australia. Many years ago. Sadly I only surfed once more after that, but hey, I'm still alive, but some friends of friends and a friend of my cousin isn't, thanks to being eaten or partially eaten by sharks. I got a warning. I was extremely lucky and won't be surfing again in the ocean anytime soon. The most terrifying experience.

Had a big GW off coast of California go under my feet and was rolled off the board by its dorsal fin, swam back beside me and by plain old good luck I guess, kept going straight best I could tell, riding back in on next wave was more terrifying than I could ever type out. In June swimmer Steve Bruemmer was bitten from his stomack to below his knee in what appears to have been an investigative bite by a 14-15 shark. On August 10th a guy and his dog were on a paddle board when attacked and knocked into the water. No injuries to the guy or dog reported. I live in TN and for as long as I can remember, when me and my friends would go fishing we would always kiss the first fish we caught for good luck, just a quick peck. The first time I fished on the beach at Hilton Head, I accidentally caught a little 2 foot hammerhead, got it unhooked, carried it out a bit, gave it a peck on the head, and set it free. A few hours later my lips swelled up so damn bad that it looked like elephantiasis of the mouth. I had to spend the rest of the trip putting Hemroid cream on my lips lol, I would've rather got bit. I was unaware of the bacteria that can live on their scales. Learned my lesson tho and haven't kissed another shark since.

True! It seems, more and more people believe that sharks, great whites in particular, are not looking to kill and eat you, that they're just curious. The scary thing is that all predators are curious by nature, and once they smell your fear (land animals), and blood or splashing about (marine life), the game is on. All predators are dangerous and should not be toyed with, nor caution taken lightly. They are all territorial by nature and see humans as threats to their food supply.

Did you see the underwater shot of the shark hitting the plexi box? It's not in the UA-cam clip. It's partway through the 1hr show..it's more terrifying than the above water shot. It does hit the whole box pretty hard and fast. I don't know if it's full breach hard but the box disintegrates upon contact. The largest remaining piece of the floor shields the guy and pushed him just out of the way of the jaws as the shark passes through. That shark was going to swallow him whole. And his aim was dead on. Then you see the shark cutting away w the rope but also a big chunk of plexi in its mouth it's trying to get out. That's when the dude swims for the boat. Who knows if the shark circled back or not but that dude is lucky to be alive. Stupid to be in that flimsy ass box. I recommend watching the full show at least enough to catch the below shot of the impact.

I have commented before on this channel and have told people this for decades....sharks are an apex predator in nature and well therefore do whatever it wants....It may ignore you, it may bite you, it may eat you, but whatever it does, it's because it wants to. I constantly get people (especially surfers) tell me that they don't want to eat people and that we are not on their menu and I laugh at them. You're not on a grizzly's menu either, but if it's hungry, and you're there and available or it's annoyed that you're in it's vicinity, you're now all of a sudden on it's menu. I don't see why sharks would be any different. I also would never believe that a shark mistook you for a seal. It amazes me how people delude themselves.

Hiya fella! I am very interested in the theory behind kayak attacks. I posted a little while back, about the attack that happened to me in Spain many years ago, when I was 13. It may have been angry at me being there in my kayak, I think you are right. It was certainly annoyed at my presence, and wanted me out of there. Maybe if I had swum away from my kayak, it may have left me alone? But, I was too afraid.
Then again, it was a large animal, and I was in it's spot. I would not really assume that it thought with logic, as it's not a person. You said at the time that it seemed to be "interested" in me. Maybe it was only focused on the kayak? The kayak was the only thing I knew could help me to float, pretty much, and I was frightened that I would sink if I swam away from it and got too tired.
I do wonder, can sharks see colors? My kayak was red and yellow. As it kept coming back, and hanging around, I was very surprised it did not just kill me. It would have been easy enough for it to do. I really do not think it was trying to eat me. I have no idea if it cruising past and around me was it sizing me up and deciding what to do, or some kind of territorial display. Do sharks display like other animals do?
It bothers me that it hung about. I considered over the years that maybe the local tourist trade boats were chumming the water, to get the tourists in. That this is what made it decide to hang around the area. I also worry that someone may have been less lucky than I was. But just was never found. How can an attack be reported, if the body is eaten, and they were out their alone?

    • @annabizaro-doo-dah
      @annabizaro-doo-dah 2 роки тому +9

Hi there is something shark researchers call 'yum yum yellow' and so yellow definitely attracts sharks. Yes sharks do display. They gape open their mouths at each other whilst "parallel swimming" and the smaller shark peels off away because size matters with sharks. Perhaps your kayak wasnt displaying the proper subordinate behaviour, that's what I think happens with kayaks. Hal does an early episode when two kayakers go missing with shark teeth marks in the kayak. What shark was yours??

    • @lotharsoran3604
      @lotharsoran3604 2 роки тому +20

@@annabizaro-doo-dah I am not honestly sure. People on here have guessed Great White. Others have gone for Tiger Shark. It was very large. "Yum yum yellow", that sounds like some kind of kid's treat. But, it may make what happened more understandable.
I've posted the full story on one of Hal's vids already, so I'll keep it brief.
13, out off the coast of Majorca, trying out a professional sea canoe someone gave me, an adult one. Got taken out of the bay by some currents. I couldn't get turned around, was trying to do so with the paddle.
I thought I felt a bump or something beneath me. Then, I was thrown out of the kayak, and got some air. It then disappeared into the depths. It kept coming back: I kept poking and hitting at it with the paddle. It was at least twice the size of my kayak.
I hit it in the eye at one point. Then, it kept more distance, just kind of circling and cruising by. I kept ducking my head under to find it. It was usually below or trying to get behind me. I used the kayak for floating, and kicked back to shore.
The paddle was screwed, even the metal middle bit had marks. The kayak took damage too. I was fine overall: some abrasions, (their skin is very rough), and being scared out of my f'ing mind. I took more damage from scrambling up rocks and stepping on sea urchins getting out of the water, than I did from the shark.
I went into shock though, later. Someone suggested it could have been a bull shark. I have no clue. I was concentrating on not dying, obviously. Hal said it was a good job I had that paddle. I think it would have killed me if I hadn't fought back. It was terrifying, having to kick back to shore... Every time I started to feel very strongly that I needed to locate it, I stopped and did so.
And every time, it had gotten behind me, or was cruising about, eyeing me up. It kind of herded me back towards the dock. Once the water got shallow enough to stand in, the shark lost interest, and swam off. The whole idea to be honest still scares the crap out of me.

@@listrahtes I have no clue. Mind you, people have been canoe fishing for millennia, probably. I wouldn't really consider it safe, personally. My situation was a tad different.
The adult who gave me their professional sea kayak, admitted that they should not have done so. I had no clue about the differences between that boat and the one I had been using previously: a more standard tourist canoe, smaller, for kids specifically. I was grabbed by a tidal pull that I was not aware was there. I think they are called "rip tides".
I found myself being pulled out to sea rapidly: away from the dock that I was basically playing at. I was just paddling around in a kiddy canoe before that. Getting used to using a kayak in the sea, I'd only really been on a river, before.
One minute, I was fine, still by the dock walls, which I had kept close to, for safety's sake. The next, I was being pulled out, and couldn't turn around. Apparently the sea kayak was a lot lighter, for going greater distances. I had thought I was doing well at the time, not over turning it. It was a lot more "twitchy", if you know what I mean. More responsive.
But that same streamline and more professional design, meant I slid along much faster than expected. As it was bigger, too, I found it harder to turn, or control. By the time I realised what was going on, the dock was far behind me, and the sea wall was also gone.
It was after I had started to panic, and kept struggling to turn around, and get back into shore, that the attack happened. I presume it was my thrashing around that did it. Maybe the shark was just attracted by the splashing, and got annoyed at me.

I’ve had numerous surgeries from racing motocross, the doctors have went from over prescribing to now not treating pain at all really, they are all afraid of getting in trouble which is really costing the people that have legitimate pain. Idk how many times doctors accused me of just trying to get pain meds. It’s sad cause a lot of people are suffering because of it and then they are forced to go buy them from the street or a friend. People have even ended their lives because they couldn’t take the daily pain anymore. Just figured I’d explain it.
Best of luck to you , your back and your family!

I wonder how many have gotten a fentanyl overdose because they bought a painkiller on the street because a doctor was afraid to prescribe.

I’ve lived what you just described for 20 years after I broke my neck and jaw in the Army. It used to be fairly easy to get some painkillers, and now they treat you like a criminal when you’re in legitimate pain. I’ve been taken off my meds because “Junkies party with X drug on the streets.” But I’ve never partied with drugs! I never even touched MJ until the plague hit us, and my neurologist decided that was a great time to just stop my prescriptions. The government and medical system wants the disabled to kill themselves so that they don’t have to pay for them. Suicide is up over 25% since the fake War On Opioids was implemented. It’s simply the War On Chronic Pain Patients.

I agree. It's gone from crazy over prescription to nothing. I get sciatica (although haven't had it for couple years) I get bed ridden. All I need is one pill and bedrest for 24 hours, which relaxes the nerve to allow the irritation to stop. They'll never give it anymore which is crazy because you cannot get addicted from one tablet every couple of years🤣

Totally agree. It appears the medical community doesn't realize that a drug addict is going to find a way to get their drug of choice. Aging is not "kind" and people will self medicate! I'm pretty sure alcohol kills a LOT more people!

Ever since I saw Jaws Hal I have only been in the ocean a few times . Once I had to swim out to retrieve a ball and it was in 60ft of water that a mate got taken in by a great white. I must have had an angel on me the day I swam over 100 yards from shore to get that ball . Even as I write this I still feel lucky

I severed my radial artery in my right hand, blood was shooting out 10-12 feet away from me with every heart beat, my girlfriend went into shock , I had to get her out of shock so she could get me a towel (she was looking for a clean towel as if that mattered lol) managed to tourniquet my own arm and get the blood stopped, made it to the hospital, they tried to stitch me up as my artery had collapsed so they didn't think it was aortal bleeding, untill i started bleeding again, then I started to panic a bit, but they gave me morphine to slow my heart down, my anesthesiologist was dope. He asked if I was in pain, I said no, he gave me some drugs, he asked how my anxiety was, I said "like now or in general? He laughed and said I was cool as hell, then he said now how's your anxiety? I looked at him and said "what the fuck is anxiety " then he said hey this last one is gonna put you to sleep, but I promise you'll wake up soon, your gonna make it kid. Then I woke up a few hours later. That guy was the shit.

@@gregsscubavids5128 yeah me too. Really only was pretty sure I was gonna die when I was in a room with a pretty clearly panicking RNA who was stitching me up. Remember thinking they where just trying to make me comfy as I died with the morphine but they just needed my heart to slow down. So before that I started to panic about how close to death I was. I mean everyone involved saved my life obviously but that anesthesiologist really has a special place in my heart. I suppose it was the meds he gave me that did the trick but I really thought I wasn't waking up again up untill the way he was talking to me. I mean he was 100% sure I was gonna make it, he was probably not 100% sure, no one was at that point but I feel like it gave me the strength to not give up. I got to talk to them all like a month or so later it was pretty fucking cool.

The UK had an actual shark attack/bite last week, in the sea, not in a pub on land! 30th July, Cornwall in South of England. I don't know the bite victim's name and age. Shark probably not big enough to make the channel, it was a blue shark? They were snorkelling in chummed water for the purpose of swimming with blue sharks, apparently it's a regular thing and nobody has been bitten before. The lady's leg was injured, she's okay and acknowledges it wasn't the shark's fault.
