    Hi Hal
    There is an actual picture of the great white that landed on Alex Mamacos, as they were winching it off the boat at the dock. It's in the book Shark Attack In Southern African Waters And Treatment Of Victims by Doctor Tim Wallet. A great book if you can track it down. Published 1978. I have a 1983 reprint. Definitely a great white. Hard to tell the length but at least 10ft or 11ft.
    The boat was a 6 metre ski boat. Mamacos had a "crushed pelvic girdle".
    Cheers 👍

      Hi. I've seen second hand copies online yes. Look around. You should find it. I just looked. I saw some although they had blue covers. Mine is a red cover. Looks the same everywhere else though.
      There is a whole chapter on sharks attacking boats. Also some gruesome attack pictures. Recently, Hal covered the attack on the black guy who had to swim outside the whites only safety net section. Petrus Sithole was his name. Both his legs were bitten off. There is a picture of this. Yikes!!

      Yeah, and the shark still has its mouth clamped onto the side of the boat in the picture as its about to be winched off, even though it's dead. It's lying crossways inside the boat, across the stern near the double outboard motors.
      Cheers.

      The odds of it happening to you aren't great at all. You can see drone footage of sharks checking out swimmers and surfers. Most of the time they don't bother you. But if they're hungry or starving or they're just having a bad day, look out. Sometimes sharks attack for what seems like no reason at all. They even do this with seals and sea lions occasionally where they bite them in half and swim away without ever even eating. They've done this with people as well.

    My wife and I just bought our second boat. We bought a nice little boat for our first boat. It was an 18' aluminum fishing and sport boat. It had a nice set up but the engine needed some work. We got caught in a fast moving thunderstorm in the middle of the lake with a stalling engine. Even with two bilge pumps running it was raining so hard the boat began to swamp. There's over 17,000 alligators in this 12 sq mile lake. You go down and you're swimming with the gators. My wife is awesome she stayed calm with full trust in me to get us back to safety. Personally I was having a near heart attack, panic attack and already planning on our next boat😂. I sold that boat and bought a 19' CC with a self bailing deck and I added a 3rd bilge pump. If you boat in Florida there's more than just obstacles to worry about and what's in the water is only half the worries. Fast moving daily thunderstorms down here can really get nast fast. That day it went from 92 degrees to 72 degrees in 10 minutes and wind gusts close to 45 mph with like 6" of rain an hour and lightning strikes everywhere around the lake. It lasted roughly an hour. Storms like this have reaped havoc on the bigger lakes and capsized 5 or 6 boats in one storm. The same thing happens on the ocean but in a much larger scale. One thing is for sure in Florida if you go boating and something goes wrong and you end up in the water. Your either swimming with sharks or gators and sometimes both. In my opinion every life vest should have a standard issued 38 revolver attached to it in Florida like the world war one pilots😂

    • @SharksHappen
      @SharksHappen  2 місяці тому +1

      It appears to have been a Porbeagle. It was sailors on a ship from the British Navy that tied Dynamite crates together and threw the rope over the shark. Said sailors reported that it had a "menacing/dangerous look." Indeed, it does resemble a Great White, but exhibits completely different behavior. However, I'm not sure where the 20' length came from?

When it surfaced for the other part, they shot it dead, cut it open and got their buddy's remains back to bury lol. You can read about it on Wikipedia if you type in "fatal shark attacks in the US."

    Those were certainly a couple of peculiar stories, Hal: The man in Fiji and Leslie Nye with his friend off the coast of Cornwall. I read the article on the latter and I'm wondering if it was a porbeagle shark? However, I don't believe that they are considered a dangerous species? It appeared that sailors in the British Navy threw a rope with dynamite crates near the shark which became caught on its tail; then it swam under Mr. Nye's boat and exploded.

    Man , this has me thinking twice . As rare as it is . I went fishing on a lancha . Its a narrow boat with 3 bench seats about 12 feet long with a 40hp motor. Was in tatanga colombia , they told me there was no sharks but we were 5 miles out to sea fishing yellowfin tuna . One side of island we fished was pretty calm other side had about 8 foot waves in the afternoon . I puked overboard once but didnt stop fishing . I just know there are tiger and bull sharks off the east coast of colombia in the carribean ocean . That would suck if a shark followed up one of the yellowfin i caught and jumped off boat or worse bit my head off when i heaved overboard . But they all say there isnt sharks off coast of colombia but i saw a video of a big tiger swimming the shorwline in cartagena 50 miles north and that italian swimmer that got leg bit off and died off san andres ( a colombian island ) so i know theres some sharks . Its the ocean

    Hi, Hal! You are so right! People, DO NOT be hanging over the side of the boat to get a better view or pic of these creatures! They CAN pluck you off, or out, of a boat before you can finish a single blink. 99% of the time, they are checking you out as a source of food; they ARE sizing YOU up & the boat, "...hmmm, I'm hungry, and that boat is NOT much of a deterrent..."!
