    Yup, this movie is the _Sonic The Hedgehog 2006_ of the _Star Wars_-franchise alright.

      @Geralt of Trivia -- May I inquire why? Functionally both atomize themselves on contact and new problems are being discovered constantly. The only difference is that Sonic Team split their development staff multiple times for the Xbox, Playstation and Wii versions whereas Rian only ever intended to split the audience.

    • @LieutenantSilver
      @LieutenantSilver 5 років тому +43

      @Geralt of Trivia -- I agree. And _Sonic '06_ is objectively... a game. Whether you want to say perceived problems were objectively verifiable or subjective impressions has nothing to do with accuracy, my comparison still stands. I mean, who are you to say that redundant asset loading were _objectively_ bad?
      There are plenty of fans who've convinced themselves it were a great game, another similarity. Nothing wrong with a guilty pleasure. Fans can like _STH06_ or _TLJ_ all they want. Critics can dislike them for whatever reasons.
      Sadly, the discourse between these camps then constantly breaks down over, as I see, fanboyism. Fallacies, whataboutery and dishonesty are offered to dismiss frank criticisms and this of course frustrates the "hater" crowd because _from their point of view_ it serves to allow hacks to practice their craft and ruin artistic standards.
      I'll be charitable and assume a misunderstanding about divisiveness. I wasn't criticizing it, offered that aspect as a humorous difference where my comparison indeed breaks down and have no problem with the concept. But what about it? Competence! I know creators who can make divisive content that rips crowds' opinions in two right between seat edges. But their crowds don't have to argue over the meaning of a piece because it was comprehensive. If it didn't, were that an objective flaw? Cue the "fanboys" dragging sophistry into the discussion about what "objective" is, what "discussion" is, even what "is" is. And the incompetent can hide once more behind artistic pretentiousness. Now that is a type of divisiveness I can loathe.

    • @LieutenantSilver
      @LieutenantSilver 5 років тому +22

      @Geralt of Trivia -- _Sonic '06's_ (objectively bad?) asset loading causes its excessively long load times. The game throws all the texture assets, level geometry, music files etc. out of the RAM in order to redundantly reload everything all over again plus 3 KB worth of textbox, leading to very frustrating downtime and slow game flow.
      People make up their minds very quickly and often without reason about different stimuli and then devote the majority of their conscious cognition trying to understand why they could have logically reached the conclusions their brain just rather efficiently jumped to. For reference I offer Girl Writes What's video on "Nice Guys" (ua-cam.com/video/a9XDb0nxSO4/v-deo.html, 28:59). I respect this behavior and hence I find it pointless to pester people about their different outlook on certain media over "muh objective criteria." But yes, if a fan simply enjoyed _Sonic '06_ in spite of its flaws but then felt personally offended that other fans are not willing to overlook said flaws, he may delude himself into "objectively" justifying them, denying them or generally twist himself into pretzels to contest the "haters'" criticism. Still pointless to argue because people don't need to justify their irrational jumps and the ad-hoc apologia is also unrelated to their tastes anyway. However it will annoy the heck out of the ""haters"" who find 30-second load times for textboxes unacceptable, how dare they, and the result will stretch on for dozens of pages down in the forums.
      Thank you for clarifying you meant the review scores, you are indeed correct. Upon release professional critics tarred and feathered the blue hedgehog but not the blue milk. Every analogy breaks down eventually but I cannot complain since I would have been no less pedantic.
      Now I don't know who MauLer, Rags, Dishonoured Wolf et al. have _attacked and silenced_ but if that happened I condemn that. Obviously. _It'sa movie, getta hold a yerselves, peeple!_ If only fanboys, too, could stop helplessly over-hyping criticism as "hate" and "harassment" just because of their delicate feelings about their objects of devotion.
      To not leave you confused about divisiveness, as I should have been clearer, I would offer Rainald Grebe as a positive counter-example. The Cologne-born songwriter prides himself on dividing audiences between joy and sadness. His favorite moment was a tearful wife slapping her laughing husband after a performance of his song Family Gold. The different interpretations were a matter of how listeners relate to the song's topic, not disagreements on what the lyrics said that lingered on for months. As Grebe conveys his stories competently you simply don't see fans arguing endlessly about plotholes or contradictions. The wife was taken aback by the tragedy whereas her husband found it comedic, so the difference lay in their diverging attitudes rather than understanding. And hopefully this illustrates the fear the """haters""" share is that talented people like Rainald Grebe may be conflated with directors like Rian Johnson. Which they perceive, albeit subjectively, as unfair.

    • @LieutenantSilver
      @LieutenantSilver 5 років тому +18

      @Geralt of Trivia -- No problem, my writing varies uncontrollably between dense and metaphorical. You keep taking my jokes literal but if I fear if I leave them out I'll just sound unpleasantly combative. _Who am I? The whole rest of UA-cam?_
      I agree there is wide variation on how serious people take plotholes and that it is indeed subjective how much it impacts one's enjoyment. MauLer and his whole panel agrees. There simply appears to be a continuous spectrum of how observant people are. I for one can tolerate everyone on this spectrum. What would be the point of complaining about people's unchosen, innate, immutable qualities?
      I suspect part of the misunderstanding in the argument over _TLJ_ is due to ego which is why commenters keep talking past each other. Some people who don't observe movies too carefully and are easily subject to Narrative Transport, an anthropological theory that describes them as being swept from reality quickly with a high willingness to suspend disbelief, must be taking all this talk of "bad" movies they personally liked quite to heart, even though they shouldn't. Patrick Willems in particular seems to have interpreted this obsession with plotholes and inconsistencies he didn't mind and perhaps didn't even catch as a personal indictment against him as an inobservant, gullible fool. Sadly for him, he pretty much threw a childish temper tantrum that confirmed all those suspicions.
      Outside the criticism and specifically pertaining to the reactions and the types of people involved in the argument, to me there are at least four separate fronts:
      _In the Blue Corner there is an ideologically charged and innovation-averse greedy movie industry that keeps degrading film art by hiring yes-men and yes-womxn._
      _In the Red-Pilled Corner are movie buffs who lament this development and simply criticize its symptoms._
      _In the Corner with the People who should be Taking Their Pills are offended fools who don't understand that the industry is being criticized, not their personal gullibility!_
      _And in the Green Corner is 4chan, trying to aggravate everyone for fun because people love their fandoms and the lolcow-readings in this sector are off the charts, Captain!_
      This is why people keep misunderstanding each other. I can't blame them. _Whomst_ could be demanded to keep up with all this nonsense? I only enjoy analysis from the Red Corner and all the other Corners with their threats and butthurt and outrage can go take a hike to _Big Bill Hell's Auto!_

      @Geralt of Trivia Force sensitivity was never the problem, it's the fact that Rey somehow can be so good with it so quickly. The galaxy forgot about the Force and the Jedi in the 30 years between Episode 6 and Episode 7, yet we have this precious Sue who, once she learns she has it, can suddenly not only imitate Force powers she's seen once, but also do it better than the person showing her despite no training.
      There is no struggle, no failure. She wants to do it, she does it.
      At least Anakin had to train and learn, despite being "Midochlorian Jesus." He made mistakes, he had doubts. And, as whiny as he was, at least he wasn't a block of wood.
      I wanted Rey to be better. When I saw her for the first time in TFA, I smiled at the potential for a female Force wielder, but didn't realize that's all we'd be getting. No character development, no struggle, no earned growth.
      I don't know how many times it has to be said to whiteknights of the token representation politics shoved in movies; we don't care if your character is black, female, Hispanic, whatever. Just give us a character instead of a chunk of wood! Show them struggling and learning instead of being instantly good at everything! It's not that hard.

      As much as I don't want to "well ackshually," the B-17's Flying Fortress moniker is a reference to its large number of guns, IIRC the only actual armor is a single steel plate protecting the pilot from the front, bullet-proof glass in the cockpit, and the bulkhead separating the cockpit from the rest of the aircraft, the only reason the bombers could take so much damage is the fact that the rounds fired by other aircraft are so small compared to the plane and so much of the surface area contains no vital components.

  • @Modification102
    @Modification102 5 років тому +378

    So I figured this out when you were discussing Finn, Rose and the Nazi BB8.
    Shouldn't the first order by all accounts, STILL be looking for the missing piece of the map to luke skywalker?
    By extension shouldn't they STILL be looking for the BB unit that was the last known possessor of the piece of the map?
    That plot thread was unresolved in TFA. Yet in TLJ we have a scene where the first order have a BB unit matching the description of the BB unit they were looking for in their grasp. However, despite this BB unit being an exact match to the unit they were searching for (as it is the last known possessor of the piece of the map to luke skywalker) they ignore the unit.
    The FO capturing Finn, Rose and BB8 predates luke showing up on crait by a reasonable degree, so even when they had no reason to suspect luke would ever come out of hiding, they ignore the droid that as far as they are concerned, holds the last piece of the map to luke skywalker.
    I feel like that means that The Last Jedi, as a sequel, entirely ignores the main plot of The Force Awakens. How can you reasonably call yourself a sequel if you are irrelevant of the movie you are a sequel to. You carry across character and names and that is all apparently.

As for giving up on the map, it's never mentioned again but we don't know what their plans were once they destroyed the Resistance. They had motivation enough to forget about the map for the time being since Starkiller Base was destroyed like 5 minutes before or something? For all we know, their plans could have been to salvage the wreckage for the map or shoot over to the restaurant at the end of the universe for a job well done. "Who cares who Snokes was?"
    Literally, everybody except you. Since he was hyped and shown as extremely, disgustingly powerful, capable of organizing the new "Empire's" forces and now, for the sake of having a scene where he dies as an idiot (even though he's shown having his guard up and the powers to toy with both Kylo and Rey, who's been shown to be more powerful than Kylo, like they're nothing), everybody's been left without any payoff.
    Like somebody else's said: most of this movie doesn't make any sense because plot and universe rules have been (not bended) twisted for the sake of having certain scenes and certain visuals (ex: Holdo's suicide attack that invalidates how conflicts have been fought in the SW universe up till now).

      You know it reminds me of another series that people going and using every trick in the book to stop and deflect feedback from, Rwby.
      Where i have heard people state you can't judge a trailer before. Even with is not the point of a trailer be like free sample? To give you a taste of it and hopefully get you hook on it enough to buy the real thing or full product in the case of movies.
      Where a season is not yet over, going you can't judge a book by it's cover. Claiming you won't get answers right away and lore dumping is bad writing. Which i can only guess they were talking about silver eyes. Which took 6 seasons to explain and was used as a plot device twice, to basically one shot the villains when the writers wrote theirselves into a corner. Powerful ability, no asks about it not even the villains. Good guys don't try to abuse it, bad guys don't try to find a way of counting it. Even with it being deadly to the main villain's biggest source of minions, creatures called grimm. Which then got explained as being fueled by the power of friendship recently. Ruby having to learn to care about folk and the value of life but she already care about that stuff. So all she simply needed to do was learn how to focus and that it. She could of been putting this ability to good use but nope. Basically then when onto claim rwby is a anime where you need to pay attention for the answers and you should watch other anime if you can't handle a anime that needs you to think. Oh yeah and you need to learn to wait for answers. Basically it was vague as fuck and going on to tell you, shut the fuck up you can't judge something that is not finish. Along with calling people haters of course.
      I can judge the fellowship of the ring movie and it would be a good movie on it's own. Even if the other two movies after it, didn't exist. For it still sets up a plot, stakes, bad guys that can be a threat/challenge to the heroes and character growth. Even before i understand the rest of the story, i can still tell that what happen in this movie is good.
      Which the funny thing is if you pay attention to rwby is how you notice the problems they were trying to tell people to shut the fuck up about. Cinder being a moron. Gets one punched by silver eyes twice. Had a chance to kill Ruby, the user of the silver eyes. Avoids her to kill snow white. So far has not one come up with the idea of studying or looking into silver eyes to see if there is a way of countering these powers or lessening their effects. Dio from jojo, when he learn of hamon. Yeah he figure out a way to counter it quickly and hamon is far less deadly to him then silver eyes are to Cinder. Given Dio has been shown to be hit by enchanted hamon flowers and not die in one shot. Being able to kill and injure hamon users with his new ability he came up with to counter hamon. Also to thrown in samurai jack. Aki can only be harmed by the blade Jack carries and Aki tries to get rid of that blade or find people who can beat the samurai. While Jack tries to use the blade to the best of his abilities to end Aki, whenever he is given a chance. Basically logic being used in Samurai Jack's case and Jojo's Case. Rwby's case, no logic to be found there.
      Oh yeah and there is a plot in rwby where they want to get this town all scare and rile up, making the fearful and angry to lure in lots of grimm to the local area. When the main villain salem or whatever her name is. Already has the power to control Grimm. Making there be no point in trying to make everyone fearful and angry to lure in grimm, when she could of done it herself.
      Oh right and if i recall correctly aura their magic system is passive currently unless they retcon it again. Leading to characters getting stabbed in the back and their aura that is meant to be passive and always on, not protecting the user. Aura stops existing the minute the plot demands a character to die.
      One of the legends in this world is someone who has killed a bird grimm. Who the minute things turned against them used their silver eyes to turn it into stone. When in the past one of the main characters one shot this very same grimm without the need for silver eyes. Students training to be huntsmen were able to fend off a grimm invasion. Somehow this grim reaper character is meant to be a legend for killing a single grimm and then after the grimm fight getting their eyes claw out by a monster girl who rushes at them head on. Yes people have done way more impressive feats by a large degree and somehow this grim reaper is a legend in this world. Oh yeah and one of the characters Crow looks up to this legendary figure they just pull out of their ass. No serious they did. He never talks about this legend or brings her up, until this old lady reveals she was this so called legendary figure.
      Yeah the thing with rwby is, if you pay attention you notice the problems with it. Yet somehow they want you to wait until the show finishes airing it's last season until you can judge it and pay attention to it at the same time. While totally forgetting you can tell people the lore slowly over time here and there, without it being a info dump or have a character lack knowledge about something and have them be the one to bring it up. Allowing the explaining of lore to make sense, given a character is asking a reasonable question. Allowing it to make sense with the context of the story. Kinda, more German fighters were shot down by strat bombers than any other plane class. The issue was they were for less manuverable so they were easy targets without screening. However WITH screening as a part of a formation German pilots found the heavily armed highly armored planes difficult to attack. The resistance bombers are slow, not just lacking agility but also speed, lacked armor, one shot brought them down when most b17s and other craft came back after being riddled with bullet holes. And lacked a 360° fire arc. If these ships were literally space b17's the empire would have hemoraged strike craft, and most of the bombers/fighters would have survived.

      Nodar Heart well, with video games at least you can be invested through gameplay if not through the story.
      I’ll take a video game with average/poor/dated gameplay and/or graphics, but good story, over a video game with excellent graphics and control but pisspoor story anytime, but still, a video game is a triad, not a duo, so you can compensate a weak story with more than pretty pictures.

      Because to many a film is more than just its writing, it's not the only aspect to consider. It's entirely possible that for some, pretty visuals and some explosive action is more valuable to them than the plot details, or the score could be a big factor for instance. Of course, pretty visuals are not a defense for writing flaws, but many simply do not care enough to understand let alone notice the writing in the media they consume. Just recognise that they are not necessarily judging a film by YOUR standards, but their own. Neither is wrong for valuing what they do, as long as both are clear about what their standards and values in consuming art are so a discussion can happen.

    • @nathanjora7627
      @nathanjora7627 4 роки тому +6

      PaperPatriot A film *is* more than just its writing, but writing is one of its most important aspect as 1) movies are a media for storytelling (and of course, stories can be media for explosions and pretty visuals, etc, but this doesn’t change the first purpose of a film, telling a story), and 2) humans are hardwired to detect logical inconsistencies.
      It doesn’t mean they are good at it necessarily, in fact it’s quite easy to trick us, but it still is one of the most important aspect of our psyche.
      Which means that nearly all humans will have their enjoyment of a story spoiled (to varied degrees) by inconsistencies, contradictions (in other words : poor writing).
      Furthermore, stories are immensely important vehicles for emotions, which explosions, pretty visuals, etc, bring to the people watching films for these elements.
      Meaning that even people watching movies for the visuals still need a story, for most of them, they couldn’t just watch clips or diaporama.
      Meaning that literally almost everyone benefit from good stories, and literally no one has it’s enjoyment reduced by good stories.
      I’m not sure if I’m very clear, so for a TL;DR : you’re wrong, even people watching films for visuals benefit from good stories, which makes it definitely important for everyone, not just those who primarily want a good story.

    In the lore light sabers are established as being dangerous in the hands of those untrained to use one, and even implying that some degree of force sensitivity is needed to full master the use of one. I also still hate the defense that Rey used a Staff therefore she can use a Lightsaber. Even assuming it works like a Sword (some sources suggest that because the blade is energy based it borders on weightless), you can't wield those weapons in remotely the same fashion. A sword has much less flexibility in the grip, you have to hold it at the hilt and the amount of reach you have with it is fixed, so your own positioning in the fight is much more subject to change to deal with the enemy's. Meanwhile a staff can be held along most of its length, which has different balance in swinging it, changes your reach, and can affect your leverage defensively.
      I can buy Rey being self-taught to scrap with a staff, but that doesn't translate to wielding a lightsaber on anything but the most basic level of gauging your reach while swinging. She certainly wouldn't have been at the level of fighting someone who clearly has trained with the weapons and would have a sense of muscle memory even if his active skill was dulled by injury. I think the Prequel Trilogy EU even suggested they had training sabers that only put out enough power to stun a target with a connected blow, why couldn't she have been wielding something like that? Or hell, give her something like Grievous's Electro Staff and save her Lightsaber fighting until after some proper training... like Luke had.

      @____uncompetative 5 років тому +2

      Ender Stratos It is no good to say what might have been, you have to critique what we got. We didn't see Y-Wings as Paige Tico needed to be seen to fall down into the bomb bay in order to convey that the bombers had artificial gravity. Disney didn't need to add that description to their visual dictionary to firm up the lore behind all this and make it more credible, as it was already credible and all those bombs falling like Paige had just fallen made perfect sense. Momentum would carry them forward to collide with the Dreadnought. They don't all land at the same point so have a vector which is both perpendicular and parallel to the ship due to the bomber's relative motion. They are not seen to accelerate when in space. Gravity isn't operating on them after they leave the bomber.
      We don't get a clue as to there being a Force Field that they can pass through, but which keeps the atmosphere inside the bomber for Paige to breathe, but then X-Wings can leave the Raddus without everyone in the hangar asphyxiating, so I guess that is one of the details that you might get addressed in a science fiction film, but won't here because _Star Wars_ is a space opera.
      The only time it makes sense to say what might have been is when you are attempting to provide constructive criticism after you have providing "destructive" criticism about genuine faults. The bombs leaving those ships isn't one of them. There genuinely isn't anything wrong with it. Everything else about the entire battle is ridiculous and it made no strategic sense for Leia to send out bombers when she should have focused on evacuating, and Hux should have taken advantage of his surprise attack and blown up their means of escape before sending Stormtroopers down to the Resistance Base to capture VIPs and collect Intel on the Resisitance's allies that were scattered in the Outer Rim. The probable reason this doesn't happen and Hux doesn't fire on Poe when he could is to contrive the scene, transmute Poe into a hot-head so you can have him more credibly stage a mutiny later in the film and lead to a failure of Holdo's plan which enables the fourth act of the film to take place, and to avoid picking up where _The Force Awakens_ left everyone on that cliffhanger, only to piss off most of the audience with something they knew would be jarringly controversial. So, Rian Johnson puts a flashy action sequence at the beginning of the film, much like _James Bond_ movies have an incredibly impressive almost out-of-context opening action sequence and then start the story proper.

      I would have had Rey approach Luke who was wearing his formal Jedi robes as if he had been awaiting her arrival for some important ceremony, and have him give her his green lightsaber and walk off saying: "Lessons. Tomorrow. At dawn". It would then be reversed, with Rey not wanting to become a Jedi but to bring him back to Leia as she had been instructed so she could then return to Jakku and wait for her family to return for her. Rey would resolve to talk to him the next morning and would go to sleep in one of the stone huts. The next morning, well before dawn, Rey would start to climb up the crag as she wouldn't want to be late for the legendary Jedi Master. Along the way she would encounter that tree, which is actually a Force Sensitive Uneti tree that Luke intended her to enter in order to face her innermost fear once she had had months of training. Unfortunately, Rey enters its dark hollow interior completely unprepared. She experiences a vision where it is daylight and she experiences the rain for the first time, it is then that things start to become more ominous as she investigates the sounds of children's screams coming from the kelp lined hole by the sea shore, she falls in and almost drowns in the waters beneath, she has never swum before, skeletons of giant sea creatures share her prison, eventually she breaks through to the surface though not before she saw figures refracted through its surface that were killing each other with blood red lightsabers. She clambers out of the waters and they are not there. She is in an underground cave beneath the island she finds a wall of ice that reflects her face and a shadowy figure approaches from the other side and resolves into the face of a woman with red hair (played by Keri Russell), Rey doesn't recognise her (it will be revealed in _Episode IX_ that this is her mother, Mara Jade who was married to Luke and left him when she became pregnant without him ever learning he was a father, through the mechanism of an extended flashback to their time together during the final battle with the Empire, during which Luke used the Force to pull two Star Destroyers out of orbit to crash into the dunes of Jakku, this will make _Episode IX_ structurally similar to _The Godfather: Part II_ insofar as both cover a family across a span of generations, Rey is a Skywalker, the source of her inherited powers are explained).

      A few reasons pop up that I could think of. Namely, why they couldn't simply turn sideways and fire as soon as we see them, is that they'd be facing the prow of the Dreadnought, rather than over top. They'd be hitting the narrowest target with the hardest armor. More likely to miss, less likely to damage.
      Also, while ''rail guns'' would imply some measure of speed to the projectiles, clearly nothing about these bombers is fast. Launching the bombs prematurely means the Dreadnought could do one of several things. First, move out of the way. Second, either open fire with a turbo laser or have a TIE fighter shoot them, causing the whole mass of bombs to explode. Three, and my personal recommendation, use the Tractor Beam to throw the bombs back. The only way to use these bombs ''effectively'' is to get close enough to the target, with line of sight between bomb doors and the bits you actually want to hit, and pray to the Force that your suicide bombing nets you 72 space virgins.

      Rey hears a voice speak behind her and turns to see Ren. Rey is angry at him for killing his father and calls him a monster. He says "How are you doing this? The effort would kill you". Rey vents some more and Ren says "Can you see my surroundings? I can't see yours" clearly more intellectually engaged with the logistics of their Force Skyping. Ren says "I know who your parents were" (past tense) which stops Rey long enough to question whether he could be possibly telling the truth, she instinctively closes her eyes as she reaches out with her mind into his. "Know me, I have nothing to hide" he says. Upon which we get an extended flashback that shows Ben as a child manifesting telekenetic ability for the first time and Han and Leia unable to deal with him and Luke persuading them to let him take Ben to his Jedi Academy on Yavin IV to give him stability through training, to give him peace and purpose. We see Ben begin to question Luke about his grandfather and be told (according to Leia's wishes that Ben knew nothing about) that he was killed by an evil Sith Lord by the name of Darth Vader. We see a teenage Ben has become adept with a lightsaber and is practicing with others his own age. We see him study the ancient Jedi texts and sit beneath Yavin IV's own giant Uneti tree. We see Ben tell a neighbourhood boy to stop climbing the tree, that it is disrespectful and it is sacred to the Jedi. The boy climbs down and apologises and Ben leaves, only for the boy to climb up again now that he has gone. This boy is Poe. We see Ren frustrated with the teachings of Luke, asking questions about why it is that if the Force is in all things in nature then why can they only use one aspect of it, surely if the Dark was used for good and balanced with the Light there would be no risks to whoever used it. Luke reprimands him for the thought and makes an example of him before every other student, making him stand facing the trunk of the tree with his hands clasped behind his back sworn to not speak to anyone until the next sunrise. Ben is there as the sun starts to set and is already leaning into the tree in preparation for the long night ahead of him where he will have to stay awake. Luke is being especially hard with his lesson to dissuade Anakin's grandson from falling to the Dark Side like him, and he does so publicly, humiliating him so that all apprentices learn and Luke doesn't need to reprimand others in the same way. Use Ben as a deterrent to further questioning of the Jedi way. It is starting to get dark and Ben hears a noise from the tree and looks up to see Poe climbing down from it. They look at each other, neither exchanging words, but clearly Ben is enraged and feels frustrated at his impotence. We then see Ben a few years later with longer hair discovering an ancient book on the philosophy of Kreia, who lived over four thousand years before and found a way to balance the Dark with the Light to become an incredbly powerful Grey Jedi. Ben is then seen in rituals with his teenage peers exploring their passions and breaking their vow of celibacy in pairs as the others sit around them in a circle in order to pull them back from the abyss should they succumb to the temptations of the Dark Side and lose all connection to the light. This is like sober sitters at an acid trip, although it is all psychic. Ben is making it up as he goes along to feel out the Dark Side yet not become a Sith. He has no Master to guide him, only an old, barely understood, book. His demeanour changes and Luke becomes progressively worried about him, but Ben says everything is fine. Luke feels it is time that he knew the truth about his grandfather, but remembering his promise to Leia he needs her permission to tell him first. Luke prepares to travel to see Leia on Hosnian Prime. Ben is doing increasingly freakier things with his acolytes in their secret cave. Luke leaves and that night one of the youngest apprentices discovers the cave aand witnesses Ben and his acolytes breaking thier sacred Jedi vow and seemingly engaged in a Sith ritual. This leads to a confrontation between the younger apprentices and the teenage ones. Ben attempts to explain that they are Grey Jedi, but the others won't listen thinking they are Sith about to use Force Persuasion on them, the young apprentices ignite their lightsabers as they were trained to exterminate all Sith without hesitation, Ben warns his acolytes to disarm them, but it is too late and heightened passions leads some into a loss of control which leads into them engaging their attackers, not using the Force to disarm them as Ben is trying to do, and defending themselves against multiple aggressors, as the teenagers are outnumbered. This all happens at night and gets out of hand and becomes a full on fight to the death with Ben forced to choose to defend his friends even if it means killing these child apprentices none of whom are more than fifteen, whilst he is eighteen going on nineteen. Ben and his acolytes are all that remains. We then see dawn break behind the temple as it backlights the low cloud that covers the surrounding jungle. A black mark appears, silhouetted against the sun as a vessel jumps in from hyperspace and descends. It is the ship we later saw Ren arrive at Jakku in, the one with upswept wings like a bat. It lands and a mysterious woman strides out of it wearing a helmet with a mask. She pulls from behind her bare hip a long tube, from which she ignites a blood red saberstaff. She nonchalantly steps over the dead and impales the dying, clearing up their mess, all the while keeping a level gaze on Ben who is right to not ignite his lightsaber at her arrival as that would make him seem like a threat before she has done anything to threaten them, and makes a gesture with his hand to hold back so that his acolytes do the same. She removes her helmet and shakes her head red hair flows out. This is the same mysterious woman Rey saw in the wall of ice, she can't make sense of it yet, but Mara Jade was Snoke's first apprentice before he asked her to bring Ben before him and she anticipated that her days as Mistress of the Knights of Jade were numbered and she had to flee Starkiller Base. Ben follows her inside her ship along with the rest of his acolytes, we see her train them, and then used to assist the conquest of civilisations in the Unknown Regions as they seek to claim territory and kidnap another generation of chidren as part of the spoils of war. We see Ben go before Supreme Leader Snoke for the first time and be told only part of the story as to how Luke wouldn't tell him the truth about his grandfather for fear he would find the same power that he had, that Luke had deliberately held him back, that his grandfather had seen the advantages that lay in the Dark Side after training as a Jedi and he had become a great Sith Lord, not been killed by one. Snoke made Ben search his feelings to know that this was untrue, and he then addresses his guard and tells them to stand down and offer no retribution as he wants Ben to strike him down if he senses this to be untrue, Ben closes his eyes and after a while says one word, "Vader", then Snoke says that he will never lie to him, that he wants him to be his new apprentice as he has sensed his potential is greater even than Vader, that he wants him to stop living the lie that his family hid his ancestry from him and accept a new name, to stop clinging to the past and commit to the pursuit of power, where only he is his Master....then this leads to Rey and Ren together in a hut with her seemingly having understood more of his origins, she knows he killed Han, but from her perspective he was brainwashed by Snoke. Ren views the potential of Rey as his way to kill the Master who manipulated him into killing his father and help him find a way half-way back to the Light having learned from Snoke many abilities of the Dark Side. Rey would need to be corrupted somewhat, and he would need to use her to be redeemed to a point where they would both become Grey. Rey senses that there is still some good in Ren. It is then that Rey wakes up and realises it was all a dream, or was it? This mystical experience opens her mind to her own untapped potential and makes it clear to her that the Force is involved in her destiny and she should not simply return to Jakku, her life has meaning now and Luke is prepared to help her make sense of her abilities, and to refine them. Hence she trains there for months before returning to find Ren has had Leia's base on Crait under siege for months. Luke shows up but the difference this time is the Resistance witness what he does for them and are inspired by it. It also helps that they didn't already see Leia do something more impressive as Ren did not attack the bridge in this alternative version of the film.
      Anyone can write some half-baked fan fic about HOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN and demonstrate that Rian Johnson had a poor imagination, but it is hard to make VIII good as VII made Rey a Mary Sue and Han a double-dealing smuggler only to kill him off before the climax of IX where it would make better sense to have all of the lightsaber battles involving a now fully trained Rey, have her try to redeem Ren, only to have to kill him at the end when she thinks he killed Finn. Starkiller Base should then get destroyed at the end of IX not at the end of VII (what is the rush JJ? you knew you were making three movies, George Lucas didn't know he would ever get to make more than one).

    I thought this was going to be one of the better videos defending TLJ -- expected him to point out positive aspects without trying to pretend that it isn't deeply flawed. Boy was I wrong! So many absolutely feeble arguments here -- from the entirely disingenuous "Poe's just some lowly rando pilot" to the absurd "who cares who Snoke is (even though the entire plot hinges on his popping up out of nowhere and putting every last plot point in motion)."
    Shame. I think there's a place for videos like this, pointing out the little points of light even in broken films. But it was an unforced error to try to grapple with the strongest criticisms against TLJ.

    Own a sword for manor defence, since that's what the Magna Carta intended. Four heathens break into my cottage. "What in the Lord's name?" As I grab my aventail bascinet and windlass arbalest. Punch a bolt through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Throw a pot of naft at the second man and miss entirely since it's a hand thrown grenade in the dark and burns down the neighbour's harvest causing them to starve in the winter. I have to resort to the pot of boiling oil at the top of the hay loft "Deus Lo Vult!" The boiling oil completely drenches two men and cause them to scream in agony and writhe on the ground, racked with incomprehensible pain. The screams of pain frightens horses in nearby stables. Draw sword and charge the last terrified infidel. He bleeds out with no one to assist him since this is Feudal Europe and nobody gives a shit. Just as the Magna Carta intended.

    Talking about the Throne Room fight, I never had a problem with the reverse grip pretorian guard kill (except that the coreography is horrible), but man did Rags convince me otherwise. Although the movies dont explain this at all, reverse grip is a very uncommon fighting style among force users, and even then, a lot of experimentation is used, because of how much reverse grip shortens your blade-arm. For example, Ahsoka Tano utilised Form IV moves - an agressive and acrobatic fighting style when dueling a single opponent, which fit her perfectly, and Starkiller used Form V - Form VII moves, which is a defensive-aggressive stance where you create your own opportunities.
    On the other hand, Rey has nothing, and it makes me very angry that she even had the idea of using reverse grip technique. Fuck me I thought I found every single problem after watching this dumpster fire 4x times and discussing EVERYTHING with a friend in a 12 hour convo, but holy shit. This is actually depressing.

    Just to add something interesting on magnetic bombs; there are examples of torpedoes using magnetic pistols (the exploder for the torpedoes' warhead) such as the British Duplex system. Though the magnet as far as I could tell did not act as a rudimentary guidance system for the torpedo, furthermore the duplex system and Mark 14 torpedoes were flawed, for example the accidental bombing attack on HMS Sheffield by British torpedo bombers wherein some of the torpedoes detonated when they hit the water and others failed to detonate at all. Just thought I'd leave something interesting. Even the Attempt at Sinking the Bismark, with all the cock-ups that happened, was a more successful campaign than whatever Leia were thinking.

    • @CruelestChris
      @CruelestChris 5 років тому +5

      There are torpedoes that _track_ the electromagnetic distortion a ship creates, not so many that use a magnet to attract them to the target like a cartoon. Problem is that distortion is a product of the ship disrupting the _Earth's_ magnetic field, so it wouldn't really be viable for a spacedyship.
      Also the attempt to sink the Bismarck? Come on, the only power that entered WW2 with torpedoes that worked consistently was Japan. Doenitz loved to bitch about how many allied ships he'd have sunk in Norway if his torps fucking worked and there were dozens of cases of Japanese merchant ships laid up in drydock while they pulled unexploded American torpedoes out of their hulls.

    4 meanings with the cave scene; 1st is Luke's decision to face the cave head on without much prompting and with fair warnings from Yoda, remember that this is because Luke can feel the force calling to him. This matches perfectly with his decisions later on in the film and helps define the stakes by making it perfectly clear that not only is Luke hilariously unprepared but that he is still falling to his emotions.
    The other 3 have been covered extensively and so I won't explain them here, it just amazes me that people always point out the incredible depth for that scene due to the layers of meaning of the vision itself but always fail to acknowledge that it is also perfectly positioned within the structure of the film and Luke's arc.
    This is why the cave scene is forever remembered, it's a pivotal scene in the overarching story for Empire, the individual storyline for Luke in Empire, the individual storyline for Luke in Jedi but also the overarching story of the entire trilogy!
    So much credit is given to this scene and yet it's genius still hasn't been fully realised.
    It not only questions our idea of the force, builds upon our characters development, informs his decision making but is also able to foreshadow future events and throw in a completely unexpected battle, while still being able to be coherent and... All with minimal dialogue.

    Mauler, re: what's going on in the trench run sequence in A New Hope, that's not quite it.
    The scene's actually based on the movie _Dambusters_ , with the exhaust port being a replacement for the dam wall. The idea is that the X-Wings have to release their torpedo at a set range from the exhaust port and it then dives automatically: this is explained in the novel as being because of extensive ECM in the trench that means they can't lock onto it, which is shown in the film as the images of the X-Wings bouncing all over the place in the TIE Fighter targeting scopes even though that's not what the X-Wings are actually doing (since it's also jamming their equipment).
    The "targeting computer" is actually just a coincidence rangefinder that works backwards: rather than moving optics until the images align and reading off the range, the range is pre-set. When the two reference lines overlap on the target, you are at the release range.
    The only thing Luke uses the Force to do is judge the range to the target, per the exercise he was doing with Obi-Wan on the Falcon with the little laser-ball. Otherwise the Rebel plan would be a bit stupid since the structure of the shaft requires the torpedoes to make that turn in order to enter it.
