      The guy did three things: A) He played Luke Skywalker because he was told that three more movies with this caracter in it would soon be made, with or without him, the original actor, reprising his role and with Disney being fine with the concept of bringing another actor to portray the "updated version", M.H decided to do his job and tried to channel, to be the real Luke Skywalker, as best he could. B) He acted his best and to his credit, he was formidable despite the obvious and genuine fact that he found this version of Luke Sky. repulsive. He did as much as he could whilst tied, gagged and bound to say, do and behave like he was told, both when acting on screen and during interviews, meaning that if nothing else, M.H did his best with what could be done, despite his protest and reticence. C) Finally, he warned and informed the public about what he refuted openly first, before being forced to "STFU" by Disney and he did so because he didn't want to fuel the fire created by fan outrage after facing the idea that Luke would canonically become this sorry old hermit that even Gollum would find pitiful beyond compare. We KNOW M.H didn't agree at all with the way Luke Skywalker, as a caracter, was utterly destroyed. Luke, as an example and as a form of inspiration, was revered, all over the world, as an embodiment of hope and heroism. M.H, of course, was happy to represent those traits through his caracter, but with the new trilogy it was either him, doing what he didn't want to do, or someone else, a willing "yes man", a person that wouldn't even try to act like the real Luke Skywalker was back in the original trilogy. Since Lea, Han, Chewbacca and pretty much everyone else but Lando came back as beloved caracters, portrayed by the same folks, M.H did the same for Luke, rather than be left out of Star Wars and become the live version of what they say Luke has: A grumpy old bitter husk sniveling and mumbling in the shadows. He just didn't know what they would do with the caracter and once he was under contract, well...

      I rewrite almost everything five times on the character sheets and the plot before writing the actual story because I know these things are awful the first time around. Gotta make the characters consistent, the in-universe rules make sense and never bend, and then make the story enjoyable.

    • @Adorni
      @Adorni 6 років тому +144

      Politics, when they're written well in stories, can be very entertaining. Look at "A Song of Ice and Fire." Those books are almost entirely about the politics between different factions vying for the Iron Throne. Final Fantasy Tactics is widely considered one of the best games to bear the title "Final Fantasy," and it's got a huge political backdrop behind it. "Politics" are intrinsic to the way a world is built, because you have to understand how different opposing forces will interact with each other on a basic level.
      Where this fails is when you try shoehorning in social politics in hamfisted and unwanted fashions, breaking your world's lore in the process. When the only conceivable reason, for example, that Rey is so bloody powerful as a Jedi seems to be because she's a woman (because I have tried to figure out why else this would be) you are basically breaking the pre-established lore in half like a twix bar; Jedi were people born with the ability to feel and manipulate the Force, but had to learn how to do it by other Jedi. They had to learn how to fight with a Lightsaber, how to resist the pull of the Dark Side. And they grew stronger or weaker by using their power regularly, and that each individual Jedi had their own respective strength caps.
      The reason, for example, Obi Wan was able to apparently effortlessly alter two Stormtrooper's cognitive perceptions by making a gesture and saying "These aren't the droids you're looking for," isn't because it's an easy thing to do, it's because he's had years and years of practice doing this, especially given that the Empire was actively hunting him down for that period of time, and using the Mind Trick was probably one of his most effective tools. Practice makes perfect, as the old saying goes. So to have Rey perform the trick on a Storm Trooper, when she's never been shown on-screen of Force Users being able to do this, makes no sense whatsoever. Why is this? Well I guess it's because she's a woman? Yaaaay, girl power XP

      This is why I think of Legends as the accurate depiction of Luke after Return Of The Jedi. Because even though he faces all sorts of trials and tribulations throughout the post-Endor period, from getting tossed out of his own body by a Sith ghost, to losing his nephew to the Dark Side, to even falling to the Dark Side himself for a brief time, Luke still remains the hero we all knew and love from the Original Trilogy. He saves coutless lives through his selfless actions, always does what's best for his family, even at great personal risk, and works tirelessly to recreate the Jedi Order. He is, in effect, the man Anakin Skywalker should've become, and the opposite of the man Darth Vader became. That is f*cking brilliant storytelling.

      Still waiting to hear something about The Last Jedi, the movie this review is about. I personally think The Force Awakes was a decent movie with lots of potential. The problem is that the next movie was a travesty of plot holes, making up things that are already well established, having pointless characters do stupid and useless things, wasted potential,
      and making stupid jokes that were not funny. It was visually well executed and that is it. Everything else was a mess at best and an unmitigated disaster at worst. The space chase was beyond ridiculous, there were no light saber fights with actual sabers clashing, and Rey is such an unbelievable Mary Sue that you feel no connection to her whatsoever. And the assassination of Luke (and Chewie) was just sickening. Great that you liked it. I certainly did not. Now, have anything from THIS movie to add?

Star Wars came out when I was just getting to that rebellious point of life and influenced so many of my life choices in a positive way. I can't find any inspirational aspects to these new films, quite the opposite in fact. But as Mark Hamill himself said, "it's just a movie". Too bad the truth is, it's just a poorly made movie. The scene between Luke and R2 D2 was the only redeeming moment of the entire film.

      And that was over the canon reboot that happened before our eyes in this film.
      And then I set that aside.
      And realized I was angry over the craptastic trope universe where you are always wrong regardless of what choice you make or what action you take.
      Choose A? WRONG!
      Choose the Opposite of A? STILL WRONG!

    • @markheavens36
      @markheavens36 6 років тому +27

      Evolved Turtle, for me there were two problems with how Luke was handled. The first is that where we left Luke at the end of RTJ and where we find him at the start of the TLJ are two very different places. Now thirty years have passed so it is entirely possible for the character to have changed, but without seeing that change it's so very, very jarring. Add to that the only explanation for that change is a couple of throwaway lines and a dodgy flashback. It reeks of a writer saying 'just accept this and don't think about it' to the audience when it comes to his character.
      The second problem for me, is that even if you accept that Luke has become disillusioned with the Jedi, he still willfully buggers off to die alone leaving two Dark Jedi and a handful of his former students to run around creating chaos in the galaxy. It's a total dick move and as a result a lot of people suffer for it.

However, I know Luke Skywalker is a goddamned hero who is loved by millions of people the world over. It's an absolute disgrace to see the character reduced to that. I feel bad for the fans and especially bad for Mark Hamill to see a legend that he was instrumental in creating be reduced to a pathetic loser.
      There's a nasty undertone of hostility towards the fans throughout this entire movie, fans of one gender in particular. I pretty sure that's the point of the milking scene people talk about so much. "Look at Luke Skywalker! He's such a pathetic baby-man that he drinks milk from his bottle like a little baby! That's the quality of the goddamn script. Rian Johnson wrote draft 1 of his script before The Force Awakens had finished filming. He went so far as to ask JJ Abrams to change Luke's scene at the end, from him meditating with rocks floating around him to standing and staring wistfully at the horizon instead. JJ Abrams then provided Rian Johnson with a rough draft of potential episodes 8 and 9. Rian Johnson threw those in the trash, finalized his script (changing almost nothing from the first draft) and immediately went about insulting those that disagreed with him and antagonizing the fans before filming of episode 8 even began.
      It reads like fan fiction, went through precisely as many redrafts, and has the same surrounding level of professionalism. Or at least, I _would_ say that if I haven't read fan fictions that are Hugo Award-level quality and effort. And I mean that sincerely, I have a list of fan stories from Witcher, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and a half dozen other fandoms that are better written than half the shit coming out today.

      Well, think for a moment what it must be like for him. Think you're an actor and your very first "real" role, because before Luke he only played some sort of extras on TV series, is such a huge thing that you're typecast for life. Everyone knew him and everyone associated him with Luke. Look up his movie history, aside of Star Wars, all he did was TV stuff and some voice acting.
      He had two choices. Break apart under the fact that he'll never be anything but Luke Skywalker or embrace it. And he did embrace it. I mean, there's worse things you could be typecast as than the hero that saves the galaxy, beloved by every fan in the world.
      It really felt like he "became" that character. It may sound weird, but I honestly have the feeling that he made that character a part of himself.
      How would you feel if something that you are gets rewritten into something that you think is just utterly and completely wrong?

    First off, I’ll just say thank you for the incredibly in-depth review of this movie and the other movies from a series that were a huge part of my childhood.
    I was born in 1975 and don’t have any memories that don’t include seeing the world through a lens of (original trilogy) Star Wars-induced wonder, optimism, and creativity. It very much shaped my ideas of right and wrong, personal responsibility, bravery in the face of overwhelming odds, and self sacrifice in service to those you love and others in general. Obviously I’m not a hero who helped save the world, or you would have heard of me, but the way you view heroism in general can affect the way you approach smaller conflicts in life.
    What these later movies have done to damage that incredibly inspiring and beautiful story is shameful, and the screenwriters and movie executives should be embarrassed. I really appreciate the time, effort, research, focus, humor, and writing that you have put into not just this video, but all of the related videos in your analysis series. The quality speaks to your talent and dedication, and in my honest opinion, they stand head and shoulders above the other critiques I’ve seen. And there are some other very good reviews out there, so that is no small praise.
    One final compliment, since I’ll only leave this one comment as a blanket over the whole video series- I love that you use Battlefront II gameplay footage as the background. I own a single video game, and a single game console, and it’s a Sony PlayStation 2 with Star Wars: Battlefront II that my stepsons got me a couple of years ago for Father’s Day. They knew that it was the only video game that I ever really enjoyed, and played countless hours of in the years between 2005 and 2010. I had several spinal surgeries starting in 2002 until 2006, so I was confined to a recliner or bed for many months throughout recovery, and I played that game so much that I eventually beat it. I then didn’t pick it up again until their incredibly thoughtful gift. It was very cool to me that you mentioned it as “Battlefront II- the good one”- and it sparked me leaving this comment, as I’m rewatching this entire video series for the 3rd or 4th time.
    So- sorry for such a book-length comment, and thanks again for such a great set of videos.

I have a plan, and it's on a need to know basis. Follow my orders, and you'll know when you need to know." and of course... don't say "I like him" to Leia after you had budded heads with him the whole time, and he mutinied.
      That would make sense. And the same story arc with pow not trusting her would be the same... but she wouldn't seem unreasonable... and the "twist" that it was Poe who's on the wrong would be stronger.
      But besides making the whole Poe is arrogant and wrong. Why did they make that? I get it if you want to reach some place... to show that your protagonist gets things wrong. It can be a teachable moment. But in TLJ, Poe literally mutinied, and after the fact people were like "Poe is great, isn't?" WHAT?

      Awesomezeke769 HD not necessarily. She’s used as a poorly thought out plot device to drive up tension, and in turn, be used as a scapegoat for the hyperjump shit she pulled off. It was poor director choice to use her as an antagonistic character in the first half to be “oh she’s doing great” when Leia wakes up. Because the chase scene is boring. There’s little to no antagonistic presence to drive tension and make the stakes feel real, so they try hamfisting in someone that can fill that antagonistic role for that boring segment of the movie. Could her character design be pandering? Sure? But that’s not her primary purpose of existing. Just a shitty move from Ryan.

    The Year is 2050. Go to movies, it's the weekly MCU movie. Disney logo on screen. It's phase 12 of the story. Movie starts, Tobey Maguire is in a wheelchair. A burglar comes into his house, steals his Funko Pops. Tobey says "it's peterin time" (this is a reference to the hit 2022 film morbius). Also says "that sounded better in my head." He puts on his mask, the crowd screams until my ears ring. He swings at the man as he's running away. A portal opens and captain Europe steps into the scene. Tobey accidentally swings into him He says "it's all good I have healthcare". Crowd cheers, captain Europe had his own TV show in 2048 and this is a reference to his prostate exam episode in season 6 where he makes the same joke. Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield come through the portal and point at each other, making the funny Spider-Man meme again. They all start jerking each other off as the camera zooms out, revealing the Death Star and the Star Wars theme briefly plays. Crowd cheers again before the screen cuts to black and Darth Vader's laugh plays. Post credit scene shows Thanos reappear, and he says, "I'm coming for you Redditors." Crowd cheers one last time, before news sources are saying this is one of the best movies of all time. Thank you Disney for saving the film industry.

    The first proper sequel we got to the OT was Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire book trilogy, set about 5 years after ROTJ. And imo one of the best things about it was how it showed both what the New Republic would be like then and what the Empire remnants would be doing to try to get back in power. We hear about systems/planets that support either side, and we see both sides working to get more planets to their side. Things like that don't seem to have been a priority at any part of the process in making these new films.

Although I guess, despite sitting through 2 hours of TLJ, they didn't bother to even sit through one full video of this, so I can't blame them for getting the entire content wrong.

That way they get a bunch of dumb progressives (and I say that as a progressive myself) who will tenaciously defend it no matter how stupid and bad it is. Obscenely privileged film executives from a massive corporation have figured out a way to get supposed progressives on their side. It's ridiculous.

TLJ was Rian johnson saying "the star wars you knew and loved is dead, i dont just not care about it, i laugh at it and think its stupid. now feel emotions about my new 'strong' characters!". Rian johnson was THAT kid on the playground that would argue that you didnt kill him while playing star wars, because he had a magical armor set and force powers that gave him multiple lives.

      This is an argument for another timeline, another possibility.
      We only found out about the train-wreck that is the Disney Lucasfilm Story Group being so badly managed that they didn't get consulted for Episodes 7 or 8, or 9 before production began or get final script approval to ensure any continuity in the story.
      The upside is, JJ can bring Luke back, destroy the Falcon, murder chewbacca, whatever. he can make Carrie Fisher a posthumous rapist, it's all moot.

    • @juanita-dark
      @juanita-dark 6 років тому +16

      +Michael Guy So are you saying 9 doesn't have to be continuous with 8? I personally hope Abrams says 8 is a Force nightmare Finn had in a coma but I honestly don't believe he would have the backbone to do that despite that being pretty much what RiJo did to 7 with 8.

    • @Toliman.
      @Toliman. 6 років тому +12

      I think the "wake up from nightmare" is a great opening to 9, because of the time-skip that has to happen to explain Leia's death, and to expand the evil empire and 'let the resistance die', and from the ashes, turn into victory nonsense that Rian set up. or whatever that was to fizzle out and die.
      You then get to tell the story of Rey again properly, and you can bring back whomever you want to get the parts from 8 and 9 that JJ's mystery box had left over. The best part about speculating for 9 is that EVERYONE DIES is the best outcome for fans. or EVERYONE LIVES, it's all a shit sandwich of options each worse than the last.
      The larger problem for 9, is the idea that the skywalkers are the main thread. There's almost no palatable redemption arc for Kylo at this point. Ruining Luke as a Pedophile Priest is the bridge you can't un-cross, because nearly all of the characters are destroyed in the process. You can't even really tell the same story from the point that Luke is dead, Snoke is dead and the First Order is a mercenary group of ideologues. You almost have to SHOCK HORROR, tell a fucking story again. The advantage of being able to murder everyone from the original trilogy, is that you can now fuck the fans and destroy everything in one Pyrrhic "fuck everyone" suicidal moment to kill off all of the characters to "subvert expectations." I probably would pay money to see Ridley's corpse on fire in the ruinous husk of the Shattered and lifeless Millennium Falcon at this point, the Porgs chewing on Chewbacca's dismembered corpse. SUBVERT EXPECTATIONS. or the Rey/Chewbacca babies ... whatever.
      The movies are dead weight at this point.
      Or, and this is most likely what will happen, is that JJ replays all the story beats from Return of the Jedi, Snoke is alive and has built another starkiller base planet again. Luke is alive, and helping Rey with her NOT_A_JEDI Academy of students, and Rose, is now a secret princess, who is captured and frozen in carbonite for reasons by the first order, yada yada yada.

      Michael Guy while i ironically agree that it would be cool to see JJ straight up ignore ep 8 and so his own thing, i belive that would be unwise because it would fracture the whole saga further.
      With proper writing, episode 9 can smartly retcon or explain away the issues with ep 8 while still telling an intriguing and original story, with better character development from the scraps left behind by ep 8.
      Let luke stay dead, otherwise it would undermine the stakes of the story.
      Bring some flaws and vulnerability to rey. Give her a proper back story that explains why she is so powerful in the force. Give the audience a reason to understand why rey might be struggling with the dark side.
      Remove some of the slapstick antics from fin's character. This is a guy that was a highly trained storm trooper. Lets see that stormtrooper training and insight in action. He can still have a sense of humor, but a trained killer like fin should have a sense of quiet intesnity about him. Not to mention his struggles with the war crimes of his past.
      Poe could also show some vulnerability. Id be interested in a more fleshed out back story for him. Fin and poe's bromance was a fan favorite. Expand on the friendship in the next film.
      Right now kylo ren has been depicted as a whiny brat, not fit to be emperor. Give him some wisdom and show that he js developing as a formiddable dark side weilder. And please, let him beat rey for once to show that all hus training is not worthless.
      Rose's relationship with fin felt forced. If this is to continue, she needs to be empathetic with the audience in her actions, not just her back story.

      An important difference to keep in mind for Yoda’s exile versus Luke’s is when and why Yoda made the decision. Yoda didn’t go into exile when the Jedi Order failed to stop Sidious. He went into exile after failing to kill Sidious.
      Yoda wasn’t sulking and waiting to die. He failed to stop the villain, realized he was out of his depth, and retreated so as to safeguard the knowledge and wisdom of the Order that he embodied. Plus, while in exile, he clearly achieved the clarity and insight needed to help revitalize the Order through anyone he might train. Him rejecting Luke was simply him recognizing that the student he was sent was not mentally mature enough to avoid making things worse. Besides, he had Leia as a backup. It was risky to reject one twin without really knowing the second was a better option, but it isn’t a contradiction within the context of the Originals (though I agree that him promising to train Luke and Leia when they were infants is a plot hole within the context of the Prequels).
      Luke, by contrast, was just waiting to die. There was nothing gained by him sitting around for years, and he never intended for anything to be gained. He wasn’t even hiding from a threat in the hopes of training new Jedi. He was just sulking.
      This doesn’t make the Prequel-introduced plot hole any less silly. However, we can’t use Yoda’s actions in the previous trilogies as evidence to support Luke’s in the Sequels. The situations and motivations are simply not the same.

      Lyndon- If you made it ten minutes into the video and didn't notice a discussion of anything beyond the opening crawl, then you must have zoned out for at least nine minutes. This video does not represent the most clear and well supported argument I've ever heard, but it is one of the most clear and well supported arguments I've ever heard on the internet.
      You're welcome to dismiss it if you like, particularly if you loved The Last Jedi and you can't stand to hear something you loved maligned, but it's beyond silly to say that he doesn't discuss anything of substance. Nearly everything he says has weight with people who care about great storytelling.
      While I'm certain that I'm better than any number or people that share the planet with us (for example, I definitely believe I am superior to serial killers and child rapists), I won't believe I'm better than you until I have some evidence of that. For all I know you have forgone the pleasures of life, live in a hovel, and work seven days a week to free and rehabilitate child soldiers in Africa. That would probably make you a better person than me, but being smarter than I am would not. Brains only take you so far in life, and some of the worst people were very, very smart.
      I'm smart, but no genius, so I'm cursed with a desire to see well written stories. Lots of people can "turn off their brains" and enjoy a film, but I work a dull job so I spend most of my life "turning off my brain". When I go to see a movie, I'd like it to be more intellectually stimulating than a fireworks show. I need the writers to pay attention to world building, character development, and suspension of disbelief or I'm bored off my gourd. I don't need it to be perfect, but The Last Jedi didn't really even try to provide what I'm looking for.
      Maybe these things don't matter to you, but they matter to lots of people who used to care about the Star Wars franchise. These are the reasons that I, and many other people, are no longer interested in seeing where Disney takes the story. If you don't mind the issues that we have with the film, that's fine. I am not offended by that. You have your reasons.
      Maybe you perform rocket surgery all day and really enjoy watching flashing colors on a screen in your off time. Good for you, it just makes you the target audience for the new direction Star Wars is taking. Enjoy it. I got to enjoy Star Wars for thirty years or so before Disney got a hold of it. I don't mind if you take your turn, but I'd appreciate it if you don't dismiss this guy's arguments without even listening to what he has to say, which is pretty obviously what you have done if you honestly believe your previous statement. You'd have to be monumentally stupid if you actually listened to him and still honestly believed what you said.
      Remember, people who are actually smart are nearly indistinguishable from people who are trying to sound smart if you either don't listen or you can't understand the points they are trying to make. I don't see any evidence here that you either listened to or understood what he was saying. You are entitled to your opinion, and I wholeheartedly support your right to spout it on the internet and shout it to the hills, but you can't sway me if you don't properly support your argument.

  • @25meip
    @25meip 3 роки тому +29

    Great job, as always Mauler.
    I've never seen a movie more at odds with it's story. Everything it wants you to believe it's directly contradicted by what happens in the story.
    Art uses our logical, human connection to the world to make us feel things. Great art is something that can be looked at in a way that teaches us about ourselves and the way the world works around us. If you're hell-bent on forcing a narrative into your art, instead of developing the story logically, your story will mean nothing. Ideas in isolation are worthless in life and worthless in art.
